Ah, hello there, [DATA LOST]? Hmm? Your name on the database seems to have been lost… ah well, we'll take care of that later. For now, let's [DATA LOST] get the [ERROR: FILE NOT FOUND]
Ah, thank you, thank you! Now, you do possess the right passcodes and preliminary memetics analysis has stated that you are indeed [DATA CORRUPTED]- well, we also detected some- [ERROR: FILE NOT FOUND]
[ERROR: FILE NOT FOUND] name, please?
ID:
[ ] Department of ????, Researcher: [INSERT NAME HERE/Write-In]
[ ] Member of Mobile Task Force-???: [INSERT NAME HERE/Write-In]
[ ] D-????: [INSERT NAME HERE/Write-In]
Ah yes, and I suppose I should say [DATA CORRUPTED] before you enter-
Welcome to [DATA CORRUPTED] Site-13.
Notes: Seems like I forgot to copy and paste this part, so I'll edit this in now- feel free to fill in the respective 'departments' and 'MTF' numbers with whatever squads/departments you'd like. Similarily, go wild with the D-Class stuff- pick from famous D-Classes or make up your own (in which case, I will roll their stats). Go ahead and vote- I'm interested in seeing what you guys pick.
Welcome to yet another SCP quest, where you're a member of the Foundation-
Except, whoa, you suddenly have all this conflicting knowledge! A world where every apocalypse is trying to make their end come true? A planet where humanity has ascended beyond the stars? What did all this information suddenly come from? Huh? Pataphysical entities? What's that?
That's right, ladies and gentlemen- you're a bunch of pataphysical entities stuck in some poor sap's head- therefore, you can use OOC knowledge freely! Dig into the SCP website, cheat as hard as you can, use as much OOC knowledge as you'd like- why, just to showcase how much of a generous QM I am, I'll even allow you to ask three OOC questions (which I will always answer) every turn!
Just don't be surprised if, y'know, it just turns out that a lot of that knowledge is just straight-up wrong depending on the whims of the world (in other words, because of the SCP canon being such a hot mess, me being forced to cherrypick what I determine is true or not) or someone else (the dice gods during the background rolls for a few characters here and there) choosing to fuck with you guys. Also, does anyone know where that guy you were possessing went? Ah well, I'm sure you'll figure out how to play Manual Samuel just fine!
Oh, and of course, there's a few background things going on that I totally promise won't screw you guys over at some point- and the highest rank you are allowed to ever attain in theory with your character(s) is MTF Squad Leader and maybe Emergency Site Director if literally everyone else is dead at the time or else the background mechanics will literally start rolling to have you killed off in some fashion.
Have fun!
Current OOC Questions Limit/Turn: 3
Requirements for Questioning:
Questioning cycle will work according to who posts the fastest.
Duplicate questions will be counted as different questions.
But to make up for it, each poster is only allowed to ask one question per two turns- there's a list and everything that will get typed up each turn on the background sheet.
Limitations on any questions deemed too 'gamebreaking'- in other words, if the answer given is deemed to be too much, the answer will be made as unhelpful or as annoying as theoretically possible to decrypt while still remaining true. This can range from answering with a 'yes/no' or literally typing in a different language for every word. Maybe I'll even use some old codes from WW2 and start doing anagrams if I get really bored…
Not all answers will remain true at all times- they will be true at the time, however, that is no guarantee for truthfulness at all times because of fluctuations in the background.
You are Matthew Robinson, a twenty-something year old male who was recently recruited into the Foundation and then recruited into Nu-7 following a series of incidents that you just can't quite remember.
Well, that's inaccurate, actually- what is accurate is that you took over the mind, body and soul of Matthew Robinson and replaced him with 'yourself'- a collection of pataphysical entities from the higher realms to influence the narrative.
Now it's up to you to figure out exactly why you did that. And what, precisely, is going on in this particular reality and the history of the one you're possessing.
Currently Known Skills:
Athletics (trait): +10%
Strength (trait): +10%
Combat (trait): +10%
"Forgetfulness" (trait): -5%
Charisma: +5% Traits: Pataphysical Possession: You are being puppeted by pataphysical entities. The current effects this may have on you are unknown, but you'll probably be executed by the Foundation should they find out about the truth behind your existence. Trained By Mobile-Task-Force Nu-7: Prior to your current possession, you were trained to the barest minimum acceptable physical standard for a Trainee Operative of Mobile-Task-Force Nu-7. Provides bonuses to all rolls that require physical capabilities. Fragmented Memories: Unsurprisingly, due to the fact that you've lost almost all your host's former memories and are now trying your best to imitate him in spite of that, you've gained a reputation for being forgetful- although really, you've just replaced him with your myriad minds. Silver Tongue: Your host, was, according to everyone else- someone who no one really disliked in spite of the Foundation's collection of disparate personalities. You have somehow one-upped your former host and managed to convince your superior to not execute you on the spot for showing up in your pajamas and forgetting your ID card (turning your extraordinarily fragmented hive mind into an advantage) and have thusly gained Charisma! Always Split, Never One: The minds within are forever howling their own ideas- and unity is a rare thing. As a result, your own body twitches randomly at times- signs of rebellions vanishing and appearing as swiftly as the wind.
Congratulations! Due to an amazingly shit roll (1) in the background, you've gained the trait Always Split, Never One and received a new mechanic to account for when it comes to rolls because of said trait!
Unity
The ability for you to function- this directly affects your dice rolls. When voting, when the most popular vote wins, a calculation will be ran to see how much of the vote it accounted for in percentages- and that percentage will always be multiplied by the roll result after modifiers are applied and be put into practice.
Just one box- it's character selection and 'which department/MTF Squad/D-Class' you want to be specifically. You can theoretically choose anything- you can even pick people like D-14134 (check SCP-1983) if you want to- just be aware that there'll be some changes going on in the background to make them conform to the canon I'm using alongside the background I've made up.
Helpful Links to the SCP Website (Always In-Progress)
I've realized that, since I figure most people don't want to dig through the pages for the answers (because I also hate doing that for some of the quests and works I'm reading) I'll eventually write for the OOC questions, this post in particular will function as a general answer repository. I'll try and keep this updated and somewhat tidy whenever questions get asked, but my memory is legendary in how forgetful it is.
Unknown. The database fluctuates heavily depending on what everyone else does- whether it's from stealing from the Foundation, liberating from the Foundation, submitting themselves into the Foundation- the list goes on. The number of SCPs fluctuates heavily with entire parts of the database having to be rewritten at times due to the sheer amount of anomalies entering in and out of Foundation custody.
Just to make things worse, there's routine hacking attempts by outsiders and overwriting by higher-ups to ensure further confusion/encryption of the database- meaning that the only people who've got a picture of what's going are respectively Maria Jones (director of RAISA) and the O5 Council. And the only person who's got control over it is the Administrator. though no one's seen them or Maria Jones in the flesh since 1994 now. The only reason people know they're still alive is because RAISA still receives routine marching orders from Maria Jones in encrypted texts and the O5 Council's found traces of the Administrator in Site-13.
Me: *Decides to give voting a full day to pass before I start writing*
Quest: Tied votes.
Me: ...
Anyways, does anyone- either lurking in the thread or otherwise having already voted- feel like throwing their vote in the ring or otherwise changing their votes to one of the top two contenders? I'll give it another day to pass- and if nothing happens, I'll just flip a coin to see which character you guys start out with.
Sealed off. As completely and absolutely as the Compendium could seal anything off the instance they spotted this particular world for a variety of reasons. If they could've destroyed this world then thrown the timeline it's linked to out of existence while giving everyone in existence memetics to forget about this world's existence, they would've without hesitation- but they couldn't, so they just had to seal it off as much as they could.
For most people observing Matthew Robinson, they'd struggle to define him as anything more than 'perfectly average'.
And not even average in the sense that 'he's so average it's anomalous'- just… average. He smiles, laughs and makes friends just like most people. There's not a single unique thing about him- barring, perhaps, his sudden recruitment into Nu-7.
Let's have a look inside his head, shall we?
Noise.
That was all there was in there.
Screaming, laughing, demanding- hundreds, no, thousands of voices speaking all at once.
You don't know what to think anymore- so many truths, so many lies. Voices rejecting each other, explaining each other- the End of Death, SCP-001, the Berryman-Langford Kill Agent- a thousand, thousand lies and truths simultaneously.
What's true at this point? You don't know. You don't even have a self- Matthew Robinson has long since vanished- what remains is nothing but a vague collective of screaming voices, incapable of even moving beyond twitching here and there when a collection of voices vaguely agrees on something for the time being before splitting again.
Screams. Screams. Screams.
You don't know why you're here. No one knows. All they do is spit truths and lies- demands and begging. There's no consistency. Your identity isn't consistent as well- a million and one proposals are made simultaneously.
Alto Clef. Kain Pathos Crow. Troy Lament. Dimitri Strelkinov. Jack Bright. Charles Gears. So many famous names- so many forgotten ones. Proposals, proposals, proposals, proposals.
…but, well, you can't remain like this forever. The remaining memories you still possess of the person who once was make you think that the Foundation in its current state will almost certainly execute you if they find you like this- and you certainly want to avoid that for now.
We must-
We must do-
There's no point, this-
Y'know, it could be fun to-
This-
That-
There's a voice whispering which ultimately takes precedence over all else. A thirteenfold memetic image revealed with one that leaves ten that separates from five and usurps the serpent and shatters the gate and-
Taking in a deep breath- perhaps the first even vaguely human gesture 'Matthew Robinson' has made in the past hour or so, the voices finally arrive at a conclusion of what precisely to do after that image gets threatened again.
Merging together, a hundred voices commit themselves to control over a singular finger- and soon after, many others follow suit. Another hundred move to another finger- and soon, thousands of processes are occurring. The hands begin to move. Sloppily. Uncoordinated. Random twitches here and there as nerves misfire. A foot. A leg. Coordination is not achieved immediately- the entities within struggle to coordinate.
It takes an eternity or a second. No one knows. Time is extraordinarily hard to calculate in the mental space within- there's dreams. There's chaos.
There's order, asserted by the voices at long last. No hierarchy- more akin to a grand council. Everyone is responsible. Nothing can happen without consensus.
And consensus is, at long last, reached, as the human known as Matthew Robinson breathes normally, instead of the previously erratic breathing as before. He sits up, his eyes unblinking as he observes his surroundings- a bunk bed. A dark room. They don't know where they are right now.
Directing a thousand processes to move the eyes to blink alongside the neck and head, the hive mind slowly observes the reality and struggles through the clinging memories within. Mobile-Task-Force Nu-7 ("Hammer Down"). Recruited recently into the Foundation before being thrown into a containment breach that you just can't remember the details of. Then recruited into Nu-7 after a few orders above.
Nu-7. Hammer Down. A Mobile-Task-Force of battalion-level strength. Often deployed when the situation is barely on the edge of full containment breach or when the on-site nuke cannot be detonated. Considered the Foundation's most militaristic task force- consisting of a full tank platoon, helicopter squadron and far more. And you- or at least the person whose body you're possessing- have just been recruited into Nu-7 for some reason or the other which absolutely no one has bothered elaborating on.
…and initiation in five minutes. Shit.
Roll = 93
Super lucky here- no need to play Manual Samuel- you've got your shit together and can walk and talk proficiently. Now you just need to figure out everything else and not get executed by Nu-7. Stat sheet is up, and uh, while you rolled really well here- you seemed to have burnt all your luck on this roll in particular.
