S.P.Q.R. - The Roman Senate and People

"A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in"

So what is the idea? A modified council RP where players take control of their characters who are part of a newly formed senate. You will take control of Rome in its cradle, while its still a single city state. While Rome and its immediate surroundings will stay relatively the same, the rest of the world will be mostly original setting, with players hopefully helping with worldbuilding the details.

I will be the GM and I will also take place of the magistrate. I will control what issue will be discussed in each meeting, report current standing and issues the empire faces before each meeting. I will also call for votes on any issues the senate and players bring up at the end of the meeting. If I do not have free time, I will temporarily let another player take place of magistrate.

Each time an issue is brought up, either a player or NPC who proposed the issue is allowed to debate for its passing and to sway the votes of the players and NPCs. Other players will have a choice to ignore it or step up to debate for or against it. But only two debates can be done at a time and I will allow 2 turns to each side to debate. After the all turns passed and there is no clear winner I will call the debate to a close and we will move on to next issue of the day or move on to voting if it was the last one.

All the decisions that are taken in senate will influence how Rome will develop and what actions it will take. It will determine whether it will live up to its name or disappear in the sands of time.

Since I do not have a lot of free time, I made sure this quest can be ran by players with minimum interference from me, except the end of the turn when I will show you the results of your actions.

If you are interested or want something clarified just respond here or pm me.

To start with, you need to create your character.

This is a basic template for now. In the future when the Rome is hopefully prospering and expanding more options for character creation, like backgrounds and race, will become available.

Name: (For now restricted to latin or greek)
Place of Birth: (For now restricted to Rome)
Age: (From 20-40, the older you are the faster you will have to replace your character. All senators are no longer eligible for senate seat after they reach 60)
Background: (Example: Large landowner, merchant, soldier, etc. Has to fit into current Roman society)

Rome

Current Date: 0 AFR (After Founding of Republic)
Current Treasury: 1,000 Gold Bars
Income: 200 Gold Bars per month
Taxation: Light
Mood: Nervous

Significant Events

Map:

(The large groups around Rome are not unified. If you have a better map, let me know.)

Name: Marcus Balius Pamphilus
Place of Birth: Rome
Age: 42
Background: A large landowner who prides himself both on his vast estates and his vast collection of children. He helped the founding of the Republic to ensure his family would have a permanent place in its government; if not as its leaders, then as the powers behind the throne. He knows that the next few years will be difficult and prone to peril but he is confident his family will rise to the occasion and secure their place in the Senate.

The Rome as a city was actually founded a long time ago. You are currently in Rome that just expelled the last monarchic ruler and set up oligarchic republic.

Edit: Chronologically speaking in our timeline, you are around 509 BC.

Name: Nikos Atellus
Place of Birth: Rome
Age: 35
Background: Nikos is the patriarch of a major merchant family that runs a trade route between Carthage and Etruria, stopping everywhere in between. His family is known for bringing in... new blood, every now and then. As such, they all have a darker skin tone than most Romans. He has a 16 year old named Mathias who handles the Carthage to Naples half of the journey, and a 17 year old named Amata who handles Naples through Etruria.

Name: Titus Regilus
Place of Birth: Rome
Age: 38
Background: Titus is that most roman of things, a solider. His family rose to power with conquered land and captured slaves under the last few generations of Kings and Titus maintained it by knowing when the monarchies time was up and leading his command away from the Latin league at the battle of Lake Regilius and leading them in a defection.

Name: Aelianus Manius
Place of Birth: Rome
Age: 39
Background: The family of Manius's touch can be felt in many quarters, and it lays heavily upon the civil sector. They are a common driver behind the creation of infrastructure, holding to the philosophy that a sturdy foundation is the key to a successful endeavor. The extension of their influence that comes with the selection of one of their own to the Senate has come as a somewhat unexpected development for most, for rarely has the families attention turned outside of Rome, preferring instead to see to the organization of the fire brigade, or upholding standards in construction. And yet, their pater familias stands today a member of the the Senate, and the reputation of his family stands behind him, suggesting that this has not been an ill-considered move.

Name: Darius Helius
Place of Birth: Rome
Age: 27
Background: Darius was an avid worshiper & studier of the Roman faith who fully expected his elder brother Tiberius, a respected Centurion, to obtain a seat on the new Senate of Rome, however, strange Veli movements at the Northern Border has called him away before he could take his seat. Now, Darius finds himself at the first Senate meeting sitting in a seat which aught to be his brothers & he cannot help but pray Mars and Jupiter guide the two rising sons of House Helii.

however, a sudden Gaulish uprising at the Northern Border has called him away before he could take his seat.
What uprising? I'm sorry, I think you misunderstood the dates. This is 509 BC in our timeline, the Rome is a single city-state with a decent amount of territory but that's about it, look at the map above for reference.

Ok, there is another OOC thread in Alternate History here, so we have a lot more players than it seems.

The two games will be one and the same, just on two different site. I made it easy for everyone and included both links into my signature. I will do the same with IC threads as well. This way everyone will be aware of what's going on.

well, it's less an uprising & more a sudden mass of Gaulish fighters heading towards North Rome being a nuiscence, but since Darius-or I-knew the right term for that, we just called it an uprising.

They can't raid/attack Rome without going through Etrurian cities. Besides, Gauls are too busy with other things, there is no attack of any kind planned for a while.

When you are not speaking on podium, you are only affecting other players. To present your case to the senate as a whole (NPCs included) you have to take your case to the podium and present a valid argument for your course of action.

By the way, I will wait for a bit when issue is raised and speaker is done making his case. If no one comes to the podium and chooses to counter the previous argument, than that's the action that will be taken.

This will be a somewhat fast paced game, I expect each senate meeting to take 2 RL days tops. But I will not make any super important decisions without input from players.

...
Alright, found where the talk of annexation/integration started.

Question, and a post incoming based on it. The treasury data indicates one way, discussion another... do we already have a common treasury?
