Your eyes snapped open as the sound of wood breaking rang through the house. You were rather groggy but you quickly awoke due to the loud screams reverberating throughout the room. Before you could even get out of bed, your door slammed opened, revealing your sister, Ishako. She was in tears, her night clothes were in tatters, her hair clinging to her forehead due to how bad she was sweating.
"Kai! We gotta go!" Ishako screamed, rushing forwards and grabbing your wrist. You couldn't understand what was going on as Ishako dragged you out of your room and down the stairs. A wall of heat and smoke assaulted your senses as you reached the living room, a raging fire quickly consuming the walls of your house. Ishako gasped as she froze in place. Your eyes followed her line of sight and you saw the corpses of your parents lying on top of each other. Bloodied and mangled, their limbs twisted in disfiguring ways, bones ripping through their skin, and absolute terror etched on their faces. Standing above them was someone mostly blocked by smoke so you couldn't see them in full. A small break in the smoke revealed a mouth full of sharp teeth, filed into triangular points.
Ishako shrieked in fear, pulling you away from the sight. The last thing you saw of your parents was them being engulfed by the fire. The cold night air almost stung your skin after being in the burning house. The house was surrounded by dozens of people, each of them wearing the forehead protector that showed their alliance to the Kirigakure, the Mist Village.
A cacophony of noise filled your ears and the last thing you saw before blacking out was Ishako's tear stained face...
---
You awoke, growling as you clutched your head. It was the same dream you had every night. But you pushed it aside, like you had done for so many years. You got out of bed and quickly got dressed, a mere black tanktop and dark colored pants. You walked out of your room and into the bathroom across the hall where you stopped in front of the bathroom mirror.
The reflection revealed a kid, no more than fourteen years of age with light brown hair that covered his icy blue eyes, which were deeply sunken into his skull. His skin was pale, his face etched into permanent scowl. This kid was you, Kaitaikojo Shigisei. Though it was usually shortened into 'Kai'. You quickly used the bathroom and walked out, the smell of a fresh breakfast had hit your nose. Walking down the hall, you made a turn and saw Ishako facing a stove.
"Oh, good morning, Kai!" Ishako cheerily said, turning around. She was about two years older than you with light brown hair that was tied into a topknot, but was still long enough to cascade down her shoulders along with two hair clips that removed the hair from her face. She wore a light blue blouse that flowed into a matching skirt with white leggings underneath.
You didn't answer, only sitting down at the table. Ishako giggled and turned back to cook as you waited in absolute silence. After a few minutes Ishako set down a rather large plate of bacon and eggs. You wolfed it down in record time, before Ishako could even sit down for her own meal! But she didn't mind and sat across from you.
"So Kai, are you excited? We're going to see if we graduated the academy!" Ishako excitedly said before she began to eat. After chewing and swallowing, she continued, "This year we will both graduate, I promise!"
A deep sense of apathy emerged as you thought of the academy. It held no interest for you, you had no care for knowledge and you had barely any skill in ninjutsu and genjutsu. All you had was your strength and your sword. Ishako could have graduated years ago, but she refused to do so until you also graduated.
"So eat up! I think I managed to help you on the written exam," Ishako said, "So today will be the physical exams. Ninjutsu and genjutsu aren't your strong point, but we trained super hard! You'll totally get it this time!"
You shrugged in response. However, Ishako seemed to not notice, or ignored it, as she picked up the plates and put them in the sink. You stood up and walked into the living room, staring blankly until Ishako came back. After making sure everything was ready, Ishako led you outside. The cold fog of the Kirigakure made you remember that horrific night for a brief moment, but you ignored the flashes of memory as you walked behind Ishako. You and Ishako are living in the slums of the Mist Village, broken down buildings, homeless people, and trash littered the area. All of this was due to the event known as the Bloody Mist, where your life changed. You didn't know any more than that, but you didn't really care.
Eventually you two made it to the academy, where you saw kids hanging around in various places. Your scowl intensified as dark feelings of hatred and annoyance filled up your chest. You despised people, the only person you could tolerate was Ishako. There was an intense urge to submit to rage and physically show your displeasure, but then you looked at Ishako.
If you did that, then she would no doubt suffer. With that hanging in your mind, you suppressed your urges.
---
You were now standing next to Ishako, standing in a line. Students ahead of you were doing the exams in squared off areas of the physical education field. Eventually you made it to the front of the line where you saw an instructor wearing the Mist forehead protector. The chunin looked at you before asking, "Name?"
"He is Kaitaikojo Shigisei," Ishako answered for you. The instructor gave you a weird look but accepted it anyway. He told you to go to the corner of the field, and so you did. Ishako tried to follow, but was told to stay back. As you walked, Ishako shouted, "Do your best! And keep calm!"
You didn't say anything, only following the instructor until you were a fair distance away from everyone else.
"Alright, the test will be in three parts. We will test your ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu. If you succeed, you will become a genin of the Mist," the instructor said. To the side, you saw three other people, but one stood out to you, he was a tall man with a scary, intimidating look on his face, accentuated by his long black hair.
"Okay, now we will test your ninjutsu. Please preform either the Clone, Substitution, or Body Flicker techniques. If you have a unique ninjutsu, you may also use that if you're feeling confident."
Well, what will you do?
[] Refuse to do this test. You can barely use ninjutsu anyway.
[] You suppose you could try to pass the test. For Ishako.
[] You did learn how to summon your sword from a scroll, maybe that would count.
[] You're way more interested in that intimidating man rather than some test.
Databooks:
These will contain the information about a character, including their stats and available techniques.
Stats:
The stat system is merely the canon stat system, except doubled. So a 5 in Kishimoto's system would be a 10 in mine. Rather skilled people can earn a 10+, showing great skill or natural talent in a stat. More rarely, someone can earn the highest stat possible, a 10++. This means a person excels in the stat or is an extreme prodigy. The eight stats are as follows:
-Ninjutsu: How skilled, strong, and knowledgeable you are in using Ninjutsu techniques. -Taijutsu: How skilled and knowledgeable you are in hand to hand and weaponry skills. -Genjutsu: How skilled, strong, and knowledgeable you are in using and recognizing Genjutsu techniques. -Intelligence: A more passive stat, this is how smart, cunning, and aware you are in all situations. -Strength: How physically strong you are. It also doubles as your durability stat. -Speed: How physically fast you are. Also includes general agility an dexterity. -Stamina: This is how much energy, both physical and chakra wise, you have. -Hand Seals: How quick you can fire out jutsu. It also doubles as your chakra control stat.
Chakra Costs:
Most jutsu need a certain amount of chakra to utilize. From lowest to highest, the costs are as follows: None, Minimal, Low, Medium, High, Massive, Monstrous, Fatal.
There's no main correlation to these costs and the stamina stat. I'll generally just eyeball them and scope out how a character is doing stamina wise by feel. But in general, a man with 10 stamina could probably spam more high cost jutsu than a man with 5 stamina.
Game Overs:
Should the event arises where you guys get killed, do not worry! For each arc, you will be afforded 3 lives. You spend one life and restart from the place you died at. However, should you continue to die after the 3 lives are up, then you'll restart from where you died, but now with permanent consequences. Too many deaths could put you in a truly unwinnable situation in the plot and shunt you towards a bad ending! However, your lives refresh at the start of every new arc.
Also, should you be fighting with an ally and they get killed, I will give you the chance to use one of your lives to make sure they survive. Any fatal or reasonably dangerous moment will be met with a Critical Moment! tag.
Alignments:
DnD standard fare will be here with the good/evil and law/chaos axes. But now the square is made into a cube with a third axis added showing the honor of a character. Honorable, Quasihonorable, and Dishonorable are the three elements of this alignment axis, and they simply mean if character is generally trustworthy, a wild card, or untrustworthy respectively.
Relationships:
Relationships go from -10 to 10, with 0 meaning neutral. Easy enough to understand! While it differs between characters, generally you need a 6 or 7 to initiate a romance, and getting below a -7 means archenemy territory.
The Quest's Relation to Canon Naruto:
I utilize Pyro's modification of the canon setting, known amongst others as the Pyroverse. It's far more fleshed out as a setting with many additional characters. He has developed it over time as the manga progressed, generally following it until he started disagreeing with many things past the Fourth World War arc, either because he disliked them or they irreconcilably contradicted setting elements he had already made.
Ninjutsu:
Summoning: Hakai:
Kaitaikojo summons his massive sword Hakai from a scroll.
Chakra Use: Minimal.
Taijutsu:
Black Tornado:
Using both hands Kaitaikojo grips the hilt of Hakai and spins around rapidly, destroying everything that he touches. Kaitaikojo can also release his grip to turn Hakai into a dangerous ranged weapon.
Chakra Use: None.
Destruction:
Kaitaikojo uses his full strength and swings Hakai at a foe using a two handed grip, crushing most defenses and killing within a single blow.
Chakra Use: None.
Earth Splitter:
Kaitaikojo preforms a downward swing with Hakai to crush an opponent. Kaitaikojo's strength lets him split the earth he has struck.
Chakra Use: None.
For Ishako. That is why you'll attempt to do this test. You closed your eyes and tried your best to remember the hand seals for the clone jutsu. After a few awkward hand seals, you attempted to make an intangible clone. But nothing happened. You tried and tried again, but no clone came out. You grit your teeth and tried once more.
"It's alright, if you pass the other two tests you'll graduate-" the instructor began, but you glared at him murderously, making him freeze. You couldn't fail this test! You had to do it for Ishako! You could only think of her as you focused and did the jutsu once more. There was a small puff of smoke and next to you was a clone...of Ishako. It was a perfect copy of her, down to the last detail.
"Hm...well, it isn't a clone of yourself, but its still well done. You pass the ninjutsu test," the instructor said shakily, recovering from your glare. "Now, we'll do the taijutsu test. This'll be easy, you will spar against ten water clones, one at a time. Just hand to hand for the first five, then weaponry for the last five. Understand?"
You didn't respond, but the instructor continued on, making a hand seal before making ten clones of himself. The first one squared off in front of you before rushing forward! You easily caught the clone's punch and squeezed as hard as you could, easily turning the clone's arm into water. You rushed forward and slammed your fist into the clone, sending it flying before turning into water. The second clone jumped at you and struck you in the face, but you didn't flinch an inch! You grabbed the arm of the clone and threw it far away from you before it splashed against a nearby tree. The other three clones attempted to dog pile you, but you grabbed one out of the air and used the clone as a club to destroy the other clones before slamming the last one down into the ground.
"Okay, you did very well! Now, here is a kunai," the instructor said, handing you the weapon. You looked at it before throwing it to the ground and pulling out a small scroll from your pocket. You clumsily flicked it open and made a hand seal, just as Ishako taught you. There was a puff of smoke as a massive blade appeared from the smoke. You caught it by the handle with a single hand and hefted the sword over your shoulder.
"W-What the...!" the instructor cried out. Your sword was at least seven feet long and as wide as normal person. The blade had knicks and chips on the edges, but it was still a very sturdy slab of metal. Before the instructor told you to begin, you rushed forward and swung the sword that you affectionately named Hakai at the clones. You easily cut through every single last clone at once and you swung Hakai once more to rid it of the excess water before putting it over your shoulder once again.
"Um...uh. You pass." the instructor meekly said. You turned toward the intimidating man and there was a gleam in his eye, as if he found something he was looking for. You almost felt relaxed now that you had Hakai in your hands. You felt so empty without its familiar weight. After regaining his bearings, the instructor told you that it was time for the genjutsu test.
"You can put down your sword now," the instructor wearily said, but you ignored him. You weren't ready to put Hakai away right now.
"Continue with the test," the intimidating man said, his voice was smooth and deep.
"Oh...okay. So, this will be the genjutsu test. I'll put you under a genjutsu and you will try to break out of it. This will be the hardest test, so don't worry if you fail. Alright, just look into my eyes..."
You did so as he made hand seals. Suddenly everything became foggy and you couldn't see a foot in front of you. You swung at the fog with Hakai, but nothing happened. You tried to remember what Ishako taught you about genjutsu...
What will you do?
[] Do nothing. You're sure you already passed anyway.
[] Ishako said something about pain...maybe hurting yourself might work?
[] Swing Hakai around and create enough air to blow the fog away.
Oh yeah. Ishako told you that genjutsu could be disrupted with some pain. You planted Hakai into the ground and looked at your left hand. You grabbed your pinky finger with your other hand and quickly snapped your finger. Hot pain flared through your hand and the fog instantly cleared, revealing the instructor who had a horrified look on his face. You grunted, looking at your broken pinky, which was now bent to the right, bulging bone pushing just underneath the skin.
"Oh my god!" the instructor said before calling over a medical ninja. The medic quickly reset your pinky and then soothed the pain with some sort of jutsu. After they were done, you clenched your fist several times, your pinky was still sore but it was fine now. After calming down, the instructor wiped some sweat off his forehead and said, "U-Um. Yes, pain can be used to break out of genjutsu, but most would resort to biting their lip hard enough. But, you did pass. Um...good job."
You just stared at the instructor as he walked over and handed you a forehead protector that had the symbol of the Kirigakure on it. The instructor congratulated you once more and sent you on your way. You ignored him and looked at the intimidating man once more, you could feel something about him. Something...calling to you. However Ishako rapidly came up to you with her own forehead protector.
"Kai...! You passed! I knew you could do it, we trained so hard!" Ishako ecstatically said, hugging you tightly. You didn't say anything, but you were kinda glad that Ishako was happy. You did do it for her, after all. Soon she let go and continued, "Okay, now we will wait for tomorrow, and we will see what team we're on!"
You gave a slight nod. Ishako then tied her forehead protector over her forehead, giving you a beaming smile. "How do I look, Kai?"
You didn't respond except for a slight tilt of your head, but Ishako giggled and replied, "Thanks! Oh, here, let me put yours on..."
Ishako grabbed your forehead protector and tried tying it around your head, but you instantly snatched it away from her. You didn't really care to wear such an annoying accessory. Ishako shrugged and said, "Okay, it didn't look too great on you anyway. C'mon, let's go home."
You nodded once again as Ishako walked over to Hakai. After asking for your scroll, she sealed the sword inside and rolled the scroll up. You pocketed the scroll and began to follow Ishako home. It was noon by now and despite your large breakfast, you were hungry. Ishako chatted away about her test and how difficult the taijutsu portion was. It was around then that you two reached the slums of the Mist and you heard rapid footsteps.
Suddenly, three men stood in front of you and Ishako, each of them wearing a different animal mask. One was a toad, another was a slug, and finally the last one was wearing a snake mask. The one with the slug mask brandished a kitchen knife and pointed it at you and Ishako.
"Alright you brats, give us everything you have unless you wanna die!" Slug man threatened.
"Hey, one of the kids has a forehead protector, they might be above our pay grade..." Snake man pointed out.
"Nah, nah! They're just newbies, I saw a buncha little shits get outta the academy remember?" Toad man added. Snake man nodded, apparently that soothed his worries.
"Hurry up, give us everything!" Slug man repeated, taking a step towards Ishako. You instantly took a step in front of your sister. "Aw, you think you gonna stop us?!"
"Kai, do what you need too," Ishako whispered into your ear. Your suppressed hatred for the public was now unleashed. You took a step forward, fury building in your body! However, there was also a joy. A joy that you would mangle these idiots who would dare threaten your precious Ishako! Your scowl broke out into a twisted grin, which clearly freaked out the muggers.
What will you do?
[] Unleash your pent up hatred and fury and direct it at the muggers!
[] Start with the Slug man. Make him regret pointing that knife at Ishako.
[] There's a rock by your feet. Perhaps you can throw it at them.
[] Show them what a real weapon is. Summon Hakai!
[] Ask Ishako who you should start with.

[X] Start with the Slug man. Make him regret pointing that knife at Ishako.
You turned to the Slug man. He seemed to be the leader, and he pointed that knife at Ishako. You couldn't let that stand. Slowly walking forward to him, Slug man grunted and tried stabbing you with the knife! However you raised your hand and grabbed the blade of the knife before he could stab you, the metal cutting into your palm and drawing blood.
"What the fuck...?!" Slug man cried out, trying to pull the knife away, but you kept your grip tight, causing more blood to pour down. You grit your teeth and squeezed as hard as you could, shattering the knife in your hand with a small spray of blood! "What the fuck?! You're a monster...!"
You looked at your bloody hand, watching as hot blood trickled down your arm. Then you leaped forward and tackled Slug man to the ground, raising your blood soaked hand into the air! Slug man tried to thrash his away out from under you, but you suddenly grasped his throat with your injured hand and began to squeeze. With your other hand, you ripped off the mask and glared into the man's eyes. They were wild with terror, his face slowly turning blue. He desperately tried clawing at your wrist, but it was for naught.
"Oh...my god! Fuck this!" Snake man said, running away from the sight. Toad man decided to follow his friend, but you didn't care. They didn't threaten Ishako directly like Slug man did. Slug man began to go limp, but Ishako lightly touched your shoulder.
"Kai, that's enough," Ishako whispered into your ear. You instantly let go of the Slug man's throat, causing him to take deep, jagged breaths of air before he began coughing violently. A bloody hand print was still wrapped firmly around his throat as he tried to scuttle away from you.
"Take that as a lesson, sir," Ishako politely said, bowing. "Next time, I don't know if I can control my dear brother so well..."
Slug man said nothing, but ran away as fast as he could. Ishako giggled as she gently took your injured hand and looked at it closely. "It's bloody, but the cut is shallow. Nothing a good cleaning and bandaging couldn't fix!"
You didn't respond, but Ishako grabbed your bloody hand and walked you home, looking as cheery as ever as she did so.
---
When you got home, Ishako was quick to clean your wound and bandage it up. For the rest of the night, you simply assisted her with various chores around the house. Right after a delicious dinner made by Ishako, you heard a knock on the door! The two of you headed over to it, and you opened the door.
"Hello! Is this the Shigisei residence?" a woman asked. She had bright, messy blonde hair that tied into two pigtails that jutted off her head. She wore glasses and a white coat with the Kirigakure symbol stitched above her chest. She was carrying a clipboard that had some papers on it as well.
"Yes, it is. How can we help you?" Ishako politely asked.
"I am Haruri Yamabe, I am actually going to be your sensei!" the woman excitedly exclaimed, adjusting her glasses. "I wanted to meet my team personally!"
"Oh! That's so nice of you! So...Kai and I are on the same team?" Ishako cautiously replied.
"Of course! Your other teammate will be Rinchi Nikama, but you will see him tomorrow," Haruri said. "As I said, I just wanted to meet my team personally, with private one on one sessions. Is that okay?"
"I don't see why it would be a problem, right Kai?" Ishako mused, looking at you. You didn't care, so Ishako took your silence as a yes. Ishako invited Haruri in and she took a seat in your living room. "Would you like some tea?"
"Oh, no thank you, I don't think I'll be here for that long," Haruri said. "However, I do want to talk to Kaitaikojo first, if that's alright."
"Go ahead! I'll be in my room then, just have Kai come get me when you're done! Be good, Kai!" Ishako cheerily said, going into the hallway that held her room.
"Please, have a seat Kaitaikojo. Is it okay if I call you Kai as well?" Haruri asked, grabbing a pen that was tucked in her ear. You didn't respond, merely standing still and staring at Haruri. After a long moment, Haruri nervously shuffled in her seat and lightly coughed. "Okay, whatever is more comfortable for you."
Haruri flipped through some of the papers on her clipboard and began to write something. "So, Kai. I'm just going to ask you a few questions. Is that okay?"
You just stared silently at Haruri once more, your body rigid. She scratched her head and wrote another thing down on the clipboard. "Okay, you don't like to speak. Then how about this, I'll only ask yes or no questions. Just tap your foot on the ground once for yes, two for no. Okay? So, here is my first question, do you enjoy living here with Ishako?"
You instantly stomped your foot on the ground, making the floorboards creak and groan. Of course you enjoy living with Ishako! A burning anger was flaring up in your chest. Haruri was taken aback how angry you were at the question and quickly wrote something down before saying, "Okay, okay! I wasn't doubting that you loved your sister! Please, calm down!"
You walked forward, clenching your fists tightly How dare she imply you didn't like Ishako! How dare she ask such a idiotic question! Haruri sighed and quickly made hand seals before rushing over to you and lightly touching your forehead with a single finger. Suddenly the rage within you vanished, replaced by a soothing calm. You stepped back, both confused and angry...but your body was too calm to do anything about it.
"I'm sorry, Kaitaikojo, I just used a genjutsu to pacify you. But it's okay, we'll work through this, alright?" Haruri gently said. You glared at Haruri but you couldn't do much of anything right now, but soon the genjutsu faded away. You wanted to attack Haruri, but then Ishako's words flashed in your head. Be good. You curled up your fist in a ball multiple times but eventually managed to relax somewhat.
"Okay, I'll ask the next question now. Tap once for yes, twice for no. Have you ever had reoccurring dreams? It can be anything, as long as it showed up multiple times." Haruri asked, chewing on the end of her pen. You thought about the dreams you had about seeing your dead parents and the gleam of triangular teeth.
Well, how will you answer?
[] Tap once.
[] Tap twice.
[] Just stare at Haruri.
[] Screw this, you're done interacting with Haruri.
You stomped on the ground once more, which caused Haruri to raise an eyebrow. She quickly wrote something down and hummed to herself. "Alright Kaitaikojo, I know you're agitated so that'll be the end of our session, okay? Once again, I'm sorry if I upset you. Would you mind getting Ishako for me?"
You blinked but did as Haruri asked, thankful to get away from the annoying woman. You knocked on Ishako's door and she instantly opened it. "Kai, are you okay? I heard some stomping..."
You said nothing, but Ishako seemed to instantly understand. She nodded and said, "Aw, you did so good Kai! So it's my turn now, right? Alright, I'll be back! No spying please!"
Ishako gave you a pat on the head and walked into the living room. Bored, you casually walked into Ishako's room. It wasn't anything you haven't seen before, a rather plain room that was very neat and tidy. There was a desk in the corner of the room where Ishako practiced her arts and crafts. In the other corner, below a window, was Ishako's clean bed with a book on it, titled "Ishako's Diary".
You heard laughter from the living room, which made you slightly curious, but Ishako did ask you not to spy on her.
What will you do?
[] Investigate the desk.
[] Read Ishako's diary.
[] Go into the living room.
[] Go into your room.

You walked over to Ishako's bed, where her diary lay. You picked it up and examined it, turning it over in your hands. The book was white and had nothing else interesting other than Ishako titling it her diary. A small metal clasp with an even smaller keyhole kept the book shut, but you pinched the clasp and with your natural strength, managed to snap it off as easily as a dry twig. You opened the diary but to your mild annoyance, you could barely read whatever she had wrote inside.
Reading was never your strong suit and your dear sister wrote in a very curvy and flowery way, making the already hard to understand words look like complete gibberish. You squinted and shoved the book closer to your face, but it was still nigh impossible to read, barring some words such as your name, love, and brother. Frustrated, you roughly flipped through the pages to see if anything stood out, but the only thing you saw was a few pages that Ishako used to draw your face in great detail.
You closed the diary, but took it with you as you walked out of Ishako's room. It just felt right for you to have it for now. You went to your room and sat on your bed, staring at the closed book intensely. From the sounds in the living room, Ishako and Haruri were having a wonderful time talking.
Well, what will you do?
[] Try to read the diary again.
[] Perhaps you should write something in the diary...
[] Stare at the diary.
[] Draw something in the diary.
[] Return the diary to Ishako's room.

Since Ishako had drawn you, you decided to draw something in her diary. Of course you didn't know how to draw, but that wouldn't stop you. You didn't have anything to draw with in your room, so you clearly did the next best thing and put the tip of your finger against your teeth and bit down as hard as you could, removing a chunk of flesh. Blood dripped down your finger, but you opened the diary to an empty page and began to draw.
The blood splashed against the page and quickly seeped through the paper. Annoyed, you opened to a new page where the pages weren't stained and began to draw again. This happened a few more times until you had accidentally stained every fresh page with your blood. However, the inside of the hard cover seemed sturdy enough!
Now that you had a proper place to draw, what will you draw?
[] Yourself. Ishako likes drawing you, so draw yourself as well.
[] Ishako. Return the favor and draw her.
[] Hakai. Your sword was your second greatest treasure, it means a lot to you.
[] Your parents. Maybe she'll like it.
[] The sharp toothed figure from your dreams. You can see him so vividly...
