Renascence: A Homura Quest

Yeahhhh maybe tone it down a bit.

and use a better color. that tone is just unreadable. Cyan is probably better.

Ah. Editing. I had just been copying the thing some people were saying about using Royal Blue when I followed the link to the last lot of blue truths, but, fair.

Edit: I like how I mistook what Royal Blue was there. Sigh. Fixing to Cyan.

Edit 2: Fixed to Cyan, but I'm going to go back and make this a more reasonable list after my exam today.

A long time ago everyone agreed that Royal Blue is a lot more readable than regular Blue.

Royal Blue is done via
Code:
[color=royalblue]whatever[/color]

I may have mixed up Royal Blue and normal Blue when using the color picker instead of just the code for the color. Whoops. Well, it's Cyan for now, though I guess I may change it to Royal Blue when I go back to edit that list down. But first- Exam! Mwargh.

First of all: I loved this.

Secondly: Semi-Canon. His findings in regard to Magical Circuits and Origins don't line up with Canon, and he may have misunderstood certain things, but the events he went through are Canon.

Homura does not currently recall those events.

This will effect things beyond just your reward.

Rewards (Pick One):
  • Wavering Memories of Magecraft: +5 to Magic Theory. Magecraft will be potentially recognizable IC. Homura will not gain clear memories of the loop, though.
  • Trait: True Magician: Additional +5 to Development rolls involving Parallel Worlds or Time Travel.
  • Revisited: Waver will find his way back to Mitakihara at some point during this loop. He may or may not stay until Walpurgisnacht.

Nice. Thank you... all three of these have some appeal to me. That said...

To the other voters of the quest... can you sell me on which one to pick for Homura?

It's hard to say. Probably either Wavering Memories or Revisited.

Memories is particularly useful if we try to borrow some study materials from Nanoha to see if Puella Magi can learn her style of magic.

To the other voters of the quest... can you sell me on which one to pick for Homura?
Hmm ... just some thoughts:
* Wavering Memories gives +5 to Magic Theory, which is useful for developing and researching magic and abilities, IIRC. It's rather a long-term reward with diminishing returns because it doesn't push MT over the cap. Not sure how useful being able to recognize magecraft IC is going to be; depends a lot on how frequent magecraft is and whether or not Homura can learn to identify it anyway.

* True Magician is probably the best reward due to the ability being able to push Development over the cap. Especially since time travel and parallel worlds can possibly make up for Homura's dwindling amount of loops.

* Revisited is probably the weakest, since it's a one-time effect and only active for this loop; if something happens and Homura has to emergency-loop, or if something happens to him before she can get anything really useful out of him, it's gone. It probably has strong potential, but it's inherently a wild-card in that apart from him appearing again for some period of time there's no explicit reward.

True Magician is probably the best outright considering the possible applications and the larger picture.

But until we get to that branch of study we're not going to use it much.

Just my two cents.

I'd agree with @Entropy Judge 's assessment of the matter, though, yeah, we'd need to resolve to look into the study of timemeistering in earnest sooner than later.

Also, cleaned up my admittedly excessive list of blue truths. Still a bit long, but I've removed a number of the horrible redundancies, and added the one or two things I'd forgotten earlier. Does this work? I'm hesitant to remove much more, just because a number of these are clarifying questions I feel like would come up anyway, depending on the answers we may get.

For the following blue truths, let us define the following:

"Associated with" is defined as "under the control of, controlling, allied with, an enemy of, directly influencing, or directly influenced by".

"Large number of black cats" is defined as "a number of black cats or entities that appear to be black cats that the people Homura overheard in the ice cream shop believe is a statistically anomalous large number for Mitakihara". When used as a noun, it refers to this group of cats as a unit.

"A single entity" is defined as "an entity that maintains a unified consciousness that may be either singular, collective, or hive mind in nature, but does not count itself as multiple individual entities or operate as such".

It's unlikely the update will be completed tonight, considering the time of evening.

I think that they're connected... maybe? These black cats are weird.

Can somebody ask blue truth about it? I'm bad at phrasing.
Nicely done, making that connection.

Hey Higu, I'll match every update you write for Rena~

Looking over the recommendations and suggestions, I will go with...

  • Trait: True Magician: Additional +5 to Development rolls involving Parallel Worlds or Time Travel.

True Magician for Homura.

  • Revisited: Waver, no matter how useful he may be, is still one shot, and we may not even meet him in the Loop before someone has to leave. There is so much we could do with him if we met him, like having Homura learn Magecraft to potentially get around the Soul Gem Magic limits, to studying Homura's friends to have Homura take notes and teach them quickly in future loops, but encountering him would come up to the dice (especially since we're not in Homura's apartment this Loop, leaving him to try to contact Mami or Kyoko to meet us), and, well, Madoka from that loop... keeping in mind that this loop's Madoka is even more powerful. (23 Circuits in the Omake, 38 elsewhere, and who knows how many now?)
  • Wavering Memories of Magecraft: It is more than just a simple boost, allowing the opportunity to recognize Magecraft. Considering the pace of the quest, we're not currently training skills quickly (which might have driven a few voters away), and the side effect of being able to recognize a certain kind of magic helps Homura understand just what she's up against. However, it may be achieved through another omake somewhat easily (there are, in fact, at least two other Nasuverse-related omakes with no rewards currently, one my own).

Meanwhile, True Magician not only sticks around, it is also is tied directly to what I wrote; other Nasuverse omakes are unlikely to be offered a similar reward. Mechanic-wise, it not only pushes Development over the cap in certain fields, it also allows Homura to more effectively use what she's got.

Added to the character sheet.

Yeah, quantum physics is irritating with how it can be so unintuitive. Which part are you looking at specifically, I might be able to help? I'm a couple years out of that class at this point unfortunately.
Eh, just the usual weirdness that comes with Kyubey trying to stop the Heat Death by throwing souls at it. I am definitely not going to go near the actual math, but even trying to come up with an abstract idea of how the hell that works is a pain.

I mean, I'm already adjusting the metaphysics to help, but the problem is that Kyubey's understanding is incomplete. He can't understand the universe's actual workings, or he wouldn't have allowed Homucifer to become a thing, so I need to figure out some (at least) pseudo-scientific means by which he could apparently extend the universe's lifespan without understanding the actual underlying foundations, and...yeah.

They could have just stumbled across an "Emotions in, Energy out" formula at some point. *Shrug*

Yeah, something like that will probably be what I'm forced to use. It's just frustrating, because I want something that's compelling and vaguely believable, but I simply don't have the scientific expertise to cook it up.

I'll figure something out; if I can't make it sound scientifically believable, I can at least make it interesting, from a narrative standpoint.

Hmm? Maybe have it so temporal-based metaphysics are different from emotional based metaphysics.

Kyubey understands entropy and that emotions+their related metaphysics. They don't understand temporal metaphysics outside of a limited amount related to wishes, they don't really GET wishes either but understand them as a local 'rewrite' due to power limits... usually.

Because if they could control TIME they'd have no need for the current system, they'd could just set up some sort of 'box' of closed time to make infinite energy or something. So they've worked out how emotions and souls work... but only along a dimension they can see, they don't know/realize yet that the metaphysical layers go deeper. They've figured out say, atoms exist, but not that atoms are made up of smaller particles perhaps might be a good metaphor.

X in, Y out is basically the bread and butter of energy generation, which is all that Kyuuby is really doing. We know he does a few things with souls: transfers them, plants a Witch Seed in them(?), and harvests some kind of energy from them that exists outside the physical realm (since any energy from within the physical realm or physics as we know them would just contribute to heat death anyway).

So really it may not actually know much about souls themselves actually. Depends on how hard getting the soul to occupy a phylactery/crystal based form actually is I guess (and that could have been accomplished via trial and error). I feel it would use a path of least resistance though considering it's overall goal.

We also don't really know the mechanics of how wishes work either unfortunately. Some kind of tithe for taking the energy it does from the being it contracts? *Shrug* Could have also bee a trail and error thing, though how they direct the energy is up in the air.

Furthermore Kyuuby had never known or experimented with Witches in the timeline where the Law of Cycles existed and Homura... Madoka's Wish was still in effect. She may choose to take the souls of girls into the Law of Cycles as her method of fulfilling the Wish, but just because she can't use that particular method (or in Homura's case it failed) doesn't mean the Wish still wouldn't work. Kyuuby was trying to make a Witch in a Universe that had a fundamental law stating that they could not exist.

At least until Homura ripped that Universe apart at the seams and stitched her own together out of the pieces.

...oh, great. I've already fucked up.

I am NOT a Nanoha expert. So, I'd been thinking that souls were largely unknown to that 'verse, outside of religion and such, seeing as they didn't come up when I searched them on the wiki, and weren't mentioned in the "Magic" article, as far as I saw.

Then I want and looked up how Nanoha familiars are created.

There may be retcons to that last update, or there may not. We'll see. I...might be able to shuffle things around and make this work.

Eh, the problem isn't the energy generation, per say, it's the application of that energy in a way which it will actually delay the Heat Death in a meaningful manner. They can certainly keep a single engine running forever, thus averting the Heat Death (technically), but actually keeping the universe as a whole running means somehow using that energy to fuel large chunks of the universe in their entirety.

Noein is good, isn't it? :)
*adds to the "to watch" list*
