Renascence: A Homura Quest

Honorifics or Western-style Titles? I've used both before, which is bothersomely inconsistent

I would've preffered a write-in that does not include direct lines that we are forcing Homura to say and leave that to wordsmithing and QM with us only setting general direction but... It's better that nothing.

@Higure I think you're missing a threadmark: Renascence: A Homura Quest | Page 282

I'm not completely on board with using the Madness with only 235 San, but this is kind of important. In terms of bonuses, though, we also have that one that eases the trauma when we make disturbing revelations, so at least we have that going for us.

[x] "Mami Tomoe, there are truths in this world that are hard to bear. That make life difficult. I have seen girls like you driven to suicide by them, and I have seen girls like you driven to murder their own friends for the sake of 'mercy' or 'justice.'"
[x] Akemi Madness
[x] "Tell me, Mami Tomoe, do you value the life of your friend? Do you value your own life? Do you place them above the lives of strangers, of people you have never met and will never meet? If not, then it will be easier for you to progress through life without ever knowing the whole truth."
-[x] If she says no to any of them, but insists on knowing the truth, tell her about soul gems and how Kyubey gathers energy when they are formed and when they break.
-[x] If she says yes, tell her about soul gems, entropy, energy collection, and witches.
--[x] Be ready to stop time and restrain her if she shows signs of a breakdown.

You sit, frozen in horror...no, not like this. You...you finally...Sayaka finally...

No. The loop can't end here. You can't keep silent, not with Kyouko here...but you can't...you know you can't pull her through this. Not as you are...but perhaps the legacy of the Akemi might change that. You take a deep breath, reaching into yourself and calling upon your dormant nature, your family's insanity burning through your more strongly than ever before.

Kyouko tenses beside you, but you only have eyes for Mami, staring into her...you can see it. Fear, loneliness, a life-sustaining facade to protect her pride...and a depth of love for her friends that can easily drive her to kill them in the name of mercy.

"Tomoe Mami, there are truths in this world that are hard to bear, that make life difficult. I have seen girls like you drive to suicide by them, and I have seen girls like you driven to murder their own friends for the sake of 'mercy' or 'justice.' I have seen the noblest of Magi lose themselves in despair, and the most monstrous consumed by horror. Some, of a certain nature, can face those truths with relative ease...you do not possess that nature."

Anger tries to form in her eyes, but shatters under your stare as she look away in shame and fear...you don't let her hide. Your hand snaps out with serpentine grace, grasping her chin and gently drawing her gaze back to you. You lean forward...your face scant inches from her own, and you can practically feel her pride draining away under you attentions. This is not Tomoe Mami, the expert magical girl and ruler of Mitakihara...this is Tomoe Mami, the girl who hides behind those roles. She will listen to you.

"Tell me, Tomoe Mami...do you value the life of your friend? Do you value your own life? Do you place them above the lives of strangers, of people you have never met, and will never meet? If not, then it will be easier for you to progress through life without ever knowing the whole truth...now, answer me."

Mami's eyes are wide with terror...not of you, not exactly...rather, it's herself she wants to flee from. You've broken through her costume...and now you've forced her to look in a mirror.

You're not sure you can ever make up for that...but you also know that it's the only way to prepare her.

You almost expect Kyouko to interrupt...but you can feel her, unmoving behind you. Still...too still, paralyzed by animal instinct, unable to make herself draw the attention of the predator before her.

You would smirk, if there weren't more important things at hand.

A keening sound slips from Mami's throat, her eyes staring at something other in the distance. Distress seems to pour from her being, and only your boiling blood allows you to resist releasing her.

It feels like hours, but your internal clock tells you she's only been like this for thirty seconds when her eyes regain their focus. Tears form, and she tries to force a smile...it's a broken, tortured thing, but it's something. After another moment, she closes those eyes, grimacing, and then looks back at you, "...yes. I...I...yes, I'd kill the world for them...I'd do anything not to lose them, and even more to take care of them. Is...IS THAT WHAT YOU FUCKING WANTED TO HEAR?!" Her expression is twisted with a rage and shame that you've rarely seen on her face before...but, at least, she hasn't lost herself in despair.

You flinch back, letting your blood cool, and fall against the side of the stall, next to Kyouko.

The redhead pulls away from you slightly, slowly looking back and forth between you and Mami, "...are you...are you..."

You breath a heavy sigh, ignoring the tears rolling down your cheeks, "Yes. I'm...back to normal, I suppose." You take another deep breath, before nodding resolutely and looking back at Mami, "No...but it's what I needed to hear."

You bow as best as you can, in your current position "I am deeply sorry for inflicting that upon you..." Straightening and looking at her again, you continue, "...but nothing else would have been sufficient. Even if you possessed that willingness before, you needed to recognize it...to be ready. I guess...I guess it's time for me to explain."

To Be Continued...

I have to admit I expected that approach to backfire hard. Pleasantly surprised.

I'm pretty sure Mami breaking down in tears and shouting at us is not all that positive an outcome.

IMO going Akemi Madness there was WAY too heavy handed and was the social equivalent of using a sledgehammer to do a soldering iron's job. Now, whether we continue or not (and because there's no option select, it looks like we are), we've already made Mami upset BEFORE she even gets the reveal.

The vote we went for would have been better without Akemi Madness-indeed, I would have preferred putting much of the explanation for another time when we don't already have half the party sobbing in the bathroom. But unfortunately, we'll have to live with our choices now.

We may end up encountering the individual known as Doctor McNinja at some point in our journey. We may also be able to grab him if he's on fire if we use timestop.

Its mostly because of the countless blue truths of "We may encounter [Character/series/thing] from this thing I like]
True, but there's also stuff like my question about if the reason Kyubey didn't modify the memories of Kyouko's dad was because not modifying them made her more likely to become a witch sooner.

Maybe; on the other hand, this is directly related to a formative even in Murderface's life, so it's totally in character for Homura to panic and break Mami rather than try to take the cautions route and run the risk of her flipping out and killing people.
