~20 hours until update.

Rena is still active. Feel free to submit omakes, present Truths, and theorize in the mean time.

I will attempt to answer Truths and perhaps award Omakes over the course of the day tomorrow.

Homura has attracted other people to her, whose feelings she did not reciprocate.

...there were a hell of a lot of them.
Ouch, I am pretty sure that there were some people who wanted to try and help her, not knowing what the problem was.(not a blue truth, but very likely to have happened.)

Meh. There's another omake I was thinking of writing, but I'm going to be gone most the rest of the day. Will just have to see how badly things derail in the update.

I feel bad. I have two* omake concepts sitting in my head, have for months** ... and I'm not writing them. I don't know if it's because I'm lazy right now, or what, but ... I just can't make myself sit down and write them. :(

*: Technically three, but I'm currently using one of them, which means that either I cut out half the omake and cliffhanger it, or I spoil things for anyone who reads my quest. I also had a fourth, I think, but I forgot what it was about.
**: Seriously, the two I'm sitting here not writing have been kicking around my head since ... November or December. I am a terrible human being.

You should write them then, it will entertain us, and lift the guilt off your shoulders.

It just happens sometimes, and it's not that bad as it could possibly be. I mean, it's about 20 months since i was able to actually type and finish the latest chapter of my fanfic, and while the concept, ideas and overall planning have come a looong way since, the stuff actually written is about 800 words, lol. Getting ideas is not that hard, making them presentable is a way more difficult, unless you're really THAT good or use more "lenient" standarts.

Considering that your quest has a LOT of ties with PMMM-verse which is a sure way to mess with writing via different mood and atmosphere, i'll say that any self-blame is a bit too subjective (keh) here.

Red Lobster | Let's Get Down to Business
[x] Tone: Polite
[x] Objective 1: Explain things to Nanoha while maintaining goodwill
[x] Objective 2: Bring Mami into current context while not tripping any "bad end" flags
[x] Phase 1: Ordering
-[x] Goal: Reinforce the "humanness" of the interactions, to get Nanoha and Mami seeing everyone more as "people" than "problems" or "enemies".
-[x] Greet and include Nanoha at the table.
--[x] If she's stubborn: "We're not doing any serious talking until the food gets here."
-[x] Apologize for overreaction last night.
-[x] Introduce Nanoha to Mami.
--[x] Note Mami as the most skilled magus we are aware of.
-[x] Shift conversation to ordering dinner for the time being.
--[x] "Order anything you like; I'm paying."
--[x] "Kyouko, a cheesecake is not a proper meal."
--[x] Order extra biscuits. Make sure Kyouko can't steal them.

There's no way to explain everything in present company, although your blood sings a different song...which you ignore. Now is not the time or place.

You smile politely, not overdoing it, but trying to avoid a deadpan expression, "Glad you made it for lunch. How have you been since yesterday? Enjoying Mitakihara?"

She has the decency to blush, and you relax in return, extending a hand towards a seat, "Have a seat...we're not doing any serious talking until the food gets here...for one thing, Kyouko won't be fully present until her stomach is momentarily sated."

Mami actually giggles quietly at that, nodding in affirmation. Kyouko, half way through another set of biscuits, doesn't seem to hear you.

Nanoha takes a moment to watch your red-haired friend in horror, or perhaps awe, before silently taking her seat, "...are you sure she's human?"

You choke back a hollow chuckle before hesitantly nodding, "...as far as I know, although it's possible her magic somehow affects her metabolism. You have any clue, Tomoe-San?" You here Sayaka mutter something under her breath about "cheating" and "magic," but you can't quite make out what. It's probably for the best.

Mami shakes her head in response to your question, smiling very faintly, "...no, I'm afraid not. Kyouko-chan's always been like that."

You push down a pang of ridiculous jealousy...scolding yourself internally. You normally reserve that for Madoka, but you keep thinking of the other Kyouko...for a moment, remembered petals of gold fill your mind's eye, before vanishing.

Nanoha, Sayaka, and Mami are staring at you...and now Kyouko too, "...you okay Ribbons? Yer blushing...pretty sure that's not normal. Fever or something?"

You switch quickly to your normal deadpan expression, embarassed, "...no. I'm fine." She opens her mouth to answer, and you snatch a biscuit from a passing waiter, tossing it towards her. She instinctively catches it in her mouth, muting herself momentarily.

You use that moment well, changing the topic with a small smile towards Nanoha, "...ah, yes, Nanoha, this is Mami. Mitakihara is her territory...and she guards it well. She's one of the most skilled Puella Magi I've heard of."

Mami's gaze flicks to yours at that, but she doesn't say anything for the moment, so you continue, looking at Mami now, "...and, Mami...this is Nanoha, as far as I can tell." You pause, feeling a headache coming on, shrugging, "...we'll sort that out later. For now, please go ahead and order whatever suits you. I'm paying today."

You send Kyouko, who appears to be salivating, a cold stare, "Before you even suggest it, Kyouko...Cheesecake is not a meal."

She chuckles, "Hey, I'm eating my shrimp first...I'll grab desert once they run out of the seafood."

Wealthy or not, you feel a little ill at the thought of the the check you'll be paying, but remind yourself that money really isn't an issue for you...even if you somehow blew your family fortune, you can easily get more funds...winning the lottery, for example, would not be hard with mild abuse of Time Stop, nor would Poker...not to mention the potential profits from reselling Yakuza loot.

Mami, however, is not so forgiving, as she points a finger at Kyouko, glowering lightly, "...Kyouko, what are the rules when someone's treating you?"

Kyouko grimaces, "...ah, let's see...no more than 6000 yen?"

Mami raises an eyebrow, and Kyouko seems to shrink, "...4000 yen?"

You doubt Mami will stop there, so you gently touch her shoulder...and her head whips around in a flurry of golden drills, her hand forming a vicegrip on your wrist.

You just raise any eyebrow of your own, and she lets go, "...ah, sorry. Did you need something, Akemi-san?"

You shake your head, "No, I just thought I'd let you know that I don't mind her indulging...although keeping under 10000 would be good."

You hear a choking noise from behind you, and find Nanoha patting Sayaka's head, "There there...some people are just lucky. It's not their fault they throw money around without thinking..."

Sayaka heaves a heavy sigh, "...it's like Madoka all over again. Next thing I know, Homura will be buying me chairs. It took me forever to get Madoka to stop..."

...and there's that jealously. You didn't realize that Madoka had bought chairs for Sayaka too...

With a shake of the head, you drop it as you remember how nice the last few days have been. You won't be jealous of this Sayaka, at least. You'll just blame the other ones, without regard for something as trivial as logic.

Snatching the next basket of biscuits as it arrives, you quietly indulge, letting the others talk while you figure out how to proceed from here....

To be continued...

[x] Phase 2: Dinner
-[x] Goal: Bring Nanoha up to speed on Puella Magi, while keeping everyone 'on par' in relative status.
-[x] Goal: Confirm our story with Kyouko's, to help Mami's perception that we're telling the truth
-[x] Introduce the different groups of magical girl types.
...and decide that, for the moment, you just want to eat.

The waitress stops by soon enough, and you go ahead and order the endless shrimp, because this could be a long meal. You sit back and relax, guarding you biscuits from Kyouko and talking about the kinds of things a normal person would...well, you thought so, at least, but you're not sure your companions agree.

Perhaps you shouldn't have told them Yakuza hunting stories...or maybe it was the anime? No, you're pretty sure girls your age are supposed to like anime. Maybe you should have picked something other than N.G.E.?

Recalling Sachiel, you get the feeling that might be it...you're pretty sure no one here has any issue with a little Yakuza hunt now and then.

Once the food arrives, you let Kyouko stuff herself with her first order, savoring your own, and then finally move on to more serious matters, catching Nanoha's eye.

Understanding, she nods back, "So, time for business, huh?"

"I'm afraid so. You wanted answers...I'm going to give you the dinner length version. If you want the documentary, we'll need to meet somewhere more comfortable...I think they would ask us to leave before I was done, if I tried to do that here."

Kyouko raises and eyebrow, "...you've gotta be dramatic about everything, don't you, Ribbons?"

You smile at her, "Well, I suppose we could talk about such things if you'd like...at length...over clocks. Maybe I'll even buy you some icecream, eh Kyouko-chan?"

The redhead freezes like a deer in headlights, clearly caught between simply freaking out and outright hiding.

The others stare, their gazes drifting slowly from Kyouko to yourself...and then the girl in question stands up, "...hehe, uh...I'll be right back. Y'know...gotta go hurry the cooks up."

With that, she walks away far too quickly, vanishing from sight...

...and you finally let a snicker loose. Your blood may have some interesting effects on you, but it's not like they're beyond you to imitate.

Mami just shakes her head, "...do I even want to know."

You shrug, "Long story...she'll probably realize in 3...2...1..."

"Wait."

...and that would be Kyouko behind you, staring at you in suspicion, "...you let me walk away. That's not right...yer faking it, aren't you, Ribbons."

You simply raise an eyebrow, and she sits back down in a huff, "Fine, you got me. Where'd that sense of humor come from, anyway?"

"Necessity. Now, back on topic. I suppose the best place to start is with us...Magical Girls, if you will."

You take a moment to gather your thoughts before proceeding, "Alright, let's start with the Puella Magi...girls like myself, Kyouko, and Mami. We are individuals contracted by a being known as Kyubey to fight Witches."

Nanoha nods slowly, "Witches...like that thing from yesterday?"

You start to nod, before pausing and slowly shaking your head, "I believe that was a Witch, yes...but it's not representative of Witches in general. It was too...coherent. To normal, if you will. Also...it was missing something...a certain spirituality, you might say. Witches aren't just giant monsters...they're horrors, curses. Their Barriers aren't big shiny cities...they're incomprehensible swirls of color, symbolism, and non-euclidean geometry. Even finding a Witch is usually difficult, with all of its Labryinth protecting it. What we fought yesterday was strong, but...not anything like a Witch should be."

Mami's alert now, "...what exactly happened yesterday? Kyouko mentioned a Witch, but..."

You frown, "...you remember the anime I was talking about? Neon Genesis Evangelion?"

Confusion is prominent in her expression as she answers, "...um, yes? What does that have to do with?"

"It was a giant monster out of that anime. In that anime's setting. With no Labryinth except for the city itself."

She blinks slowly, "...ah, that's...no, please, go on."

You do so, looking back towards Nanoha, "...like I was saying, we're contracted to hunt Witches. It's a simple deal. One Wish for a lifetime of battle...some of us are happy to do so, the Wish outweighing the price. Others don't realize what they're signing up for, and yet others are just not ready...casualties are far from low, although a good mentor can help avert disaster early on."

Nanoha chuckles, looking from you...to Mami...to Kyouko's unusually grim expression, and then her own smile fades away, "...you're serious. You...you just sign away your lives, and then...get used up? How long has this been...going on...?"

Kyouko frowns at that, "Hmm...uh, I'm not really sure. I mean, Kyubey's been around since Joan of Arc, I know that...little guy told me about her would make me wanna' sign up, I think. He was right, of course...to be like La Pucelle...heh. How could anyone resist?"

Mami stares, "...that long? I thought...I don't know, there weren't Magical Girl stories back then, were there? Shouldn't there be?"

You consider saying nothing. It would be easier to leave them in the dark...to let them think humanity got here on its own, and that Puella Magi are just a footnote in history...but should you keep it from them? It's not really important, in the present, but maybe it would help them understand...

Nanoha's curiosity is going to make keeping everything in order difficult, but Homura's going to try.

For now, good night everyone.

Hopefully Homu can make sure she doesn't spill the beans on how the Incubators exactly plan on overcoming it.

The first begs the second, I suppose.

[X] Don't share. They don't need to know, for the moment, and you might never even need to tell them this loop.

You know ... if we're going to share information on the Incubators, we might as well just summon Kyubey. Mami, at least, is almost certainly going to check with him afterwards whether we say anything or not, but we might be able to have Kyouko keep an eye on her in case she starts having bad ideas. So if we decide to say anything regarding the Incubators' history with humans and their goals, he should be the one to say it - not least because any incredulity in the statements can be dealt with by him. That said, I'm rather in favor of saying it's not really relevant to the right-now issue, because this is the dinner-length version, not the documentary. Nanoha might be a little irritated, but eh. Unless she has an idea to summon TSAB in full force, there's not really anything she can do except try to help the people around her, and knowing that Incubators have been doing this for a lot longer than she's thinking isn't going to change things.

Might as well have the reveals in a controlled manner than to leave it to QB

The thing is, not telling the full truth about Kyubey allows him to reveal the more unpleasant parts of it at the time of his choosing, which may or may not be a time where we can keep everyone calm and rational about it. The more we reveal, the less power Kyubey has to screw us over.

In a restaurant with Mami, Kyouko, and Sayaka? Do we really want them reacting to that kind of reveal in public? I don't think it's something we should talk about right now, because doing so has a good chance of leading to badwrongfun.

In Japanese culture, public displays of emotion are mildly frowned upon. We can leverage that to prevent a scene in the restaurant.

Really, though, I doubt that anyone will have a severe reaction to the Incubators' true nature, so long as it doesn't include lichbomb or witchbomb.

Do you really want to count on cultural norms to keep on-edge Magical Girls from freaking out when they find out that aliens have been systematically manipulating humans for centuries-to-millennia? Or, worse, driving the emotions down in public, then freaking out later (which Mami has done, in The Different Story). It's something I'd be a bit worried about - and if we tell them later, in a more comfortable and private location, they can have the reaction that will let them relieve some stress instead of having to bottle it up.

Really, though, I doubt that anyone will have a severe reaction to the Incubators' true nature, so long as it doesn't include lichbomb or witchbomb.
Most of my rationale is based on what is going to be discussed and potential derails, rather than the relatively simple matter of how long Incubators have been interacting with humans. If Kyouko lets something slip, or we say something that puts us on the spot as knowing an awful lot of dark secrets that are arguably 'need-to-know,' then this meeting is in trouble. Mostly because of Mami - because she hasn't been Witch-bombed, or even Lich-bombed, she's liable to still trust Kyubey, and might contact him to cross-check our story. Which is part of why I suggested bringing him in if we were going to say anything about it anyway; we haven't told her not to trust him, and haven't really given her a good reason not to, so why shouldn't she? She isn't likely to keep any contact like that secret, but if she does, we can't really vet anything she learns.

Particularly with the plan as presented:
-[ ] Provide the "official" version of propaganda for Puella Magi.
--[ ] Be sure to phrase it more as "this is what people say", rather than "this is the truth".
If Mami or Nanoha notice the phrasing, they might be smart enough to ask what we think about it. This information isn't really part of the 'official propaganda' - you have to look for it, ask Kyubey about it.

-[ ] Detail the basic consequences of living as a Puella Magi: The duty and need to hunt witches, grief seeds, and similar matters.
No one here is stupid. They're probably going to pick up on the oddity of Incubators having manipulated people from the shadow for millennia instead of allowing the knowledge to become more widespread; Nanoha especially is going to question this, given that she's had contact with the Bureau by now. Why children? Where are the 'adult' Magi? She's going to pick up on Homura, Kyouko, and Mami being the only ones in the area, that Homura's a newcomer, and that this is Mami's territory; combined with what we just told her:
"...like I was saying, we're contracted to hunt Witches. It's a simple deal. One Wish for a lifetime of battle...some of us are happy to do so, the Wish outweighing the price. Others don't realize what they're signing up for, and yet others are just not ready...casualties are far from low, although a good mentor can help avert disaster early on."
and the knowledge that Incubators have been doing this, pretty much systematically, for the time they have, is going to lead her to ask about the oversight. She's far enough along in the Nanoha timeline to have experience with the military and bureaucracy; she isn't going to be like Kyubey's targets, most of whom simply accept what he says and don't really think about it (see: Mami). Going into the Incubators' history with humans is, I think, a bad idea. And right now, at least, it's definitely not necessary.
