[x] Tone: Polite
[x] Objective 1: Explain things to Nanoha while maintaining goodwill
[x] Objective 2: Bring Mami into current context while not tripping any "bad end" flags
[x] Phase 1: Ordering
-[x] Goal: Reinforce the "humanness" of the interactions, to get Nanoha and Mami seeing everyone more as "people" than "problems" or "enemies".
-[x] Greet and include Nanoha at the table.
--[x] If she's stubborn: "We're not doing any serious talking until the food gets here."
-[x] Apologize for overreaction last night.
-[x] Introduce Nanoha to Mami.
--[x] Note Mami as the most skilled magus we are aware of.
-[x] Shift conversation to ordering dinner for the time being.
--[x] "Order anything you like; I'm paying."
--[x] "Kyouko, a cheesecake is not a proper meal."
--[x] Order extra biscuits. Make sure Kyouko can't steal them.
There's no way to explain everything in present company, although your blood sings a different song...which you ignore. Now is not the time or place.
You smile politely, not overdoing it, but trying to avoid a deadpan expression, "Glad you made it for lunch. How have you been since yesterday? Enjoying Mitakihara?"
She has the decency to blush, and you relax in return, extending a hand towards a seat, "Have a seat...we're not doing any serious talking until the food gets here...for one thing, Kyouko won't be fully present until her stomach is momentarily sated."
Mami actually giggles quietly at that, nodding in affirmation. Kyouko, half way through another set of biscuits, doesn't seem to hear you.
Nanoha takes a moment to watch your red-haired friend in horror, or perhaps awe, before silently taking her seat, "...are you sure she's human?"
You choke back a hollow chuckle before hesitantly nodding, "...as far as I know, although it's possible her magic somehow affects her metabolism. You have any clue, Tomoe-San?" You here Sayaka mutter something under her breath about "cheating" and "magic," but you can't quite make out what. It's probably for the best.
Mami shakes her head in response to your question, smiling very faintly, "...no, I'm afraid not. Kyouko-chan's always been like that."
You push down a pang of ridiculous jealousy...scolding yourself internally. You normally reserve that for Madoka, but you keep thinking of the other Kyouko...for a moment, remembered petals of gold fill your mind's eye, before vanishing.
Nanoha, Sayaka, and Mami are staring at you...and now Kyouko too, "...you okay Ribbons? Yer blushing...pretty sure that's not normal. Fever or something?"
You switch quickly to your normal deadpan expression, embarassed, "...no. I'm fine." She opens her mouth to answer, and you snatch a biscuit from a passing waiter, tossing it towards her. She instinctively catches it in her mouth, muting herself momentarily.
You use that moment well, changing the topic with a small smile towards Nanoha, "...ah, yes, Nanoha, this is Mami. Mitakihara is her territory...and she guards it well. She's one of the most skilled Puella Magi I've heard of."
Mami's gaze flicks to yours at that, but she doesn't say anything for the moment, so you continue, looking at Mami now, "...and, Mami...this is Nanoha, as far as I can tell." You pause, feeling a headache coming on, shrugging, "...we'll sort that out later. For now, please go ahead and order whatever suits you. I'm paying today."
You send Kyouko, who appears to be salivating, a cold stare, "Before you even suggest it, Kyouko...Cheesecake is not a meal."
She chuckles, "Hey, I'm eating my shrimp first...I'll grab desert once they run out of the seafood."
Wealthy or not, you feel a little ill at the thought of the the check you'll be paying, but remind yourself that money really isn't an issue for you...even if you somehow blew your family fortune, you can easily get more funds...winning the lottery, for example, would not be hard with mild abuse of Time Stop, nor would Poker...not to mention the potential profits from reselling Yakuza loot.
Mami, however, is not so forgiving, as she points a finger at Kyouko, glowering lightly, "...Kyouko, what are the rules when someone's treating you?"
Kyouko grimaces, "...ah, let's see...no more than 6000 yen?"
Mami raises an eyebrow, and Kyouko seems to shrink, "...4000 yen?"
You doubt Mami will stop there, so you gently touch her shoulder...and her head whips around in a flurry of golden drills, her hand forming a vicegrip on your wrist.
You just raise any eyebrow of your own, and she lets go, "...ah, sorry. Did you need something, Akemi-san?"
You shake your head, "No, I just thought I'd let you know that I don't mind her indulging...although keeping under 10000 would be good."
You hear a choking noise from behind you, and find Nanoha patting Sayaka's head, "There there...some people are just lucky. It's not their fault they throw money around without thinking..."
Sayaka heaves a heavy sigh, "...it's like Madoka all over again. Next thing I know, Homura will be buying me chairs. It took me forever to get Madoka to stop..."
...and there's that jealously. You didn't realize that Madoka had bought chairs for Sayaka too...
With a shake of the head, you drop it as you remember how nice the last few days have been. You won't be jealous of this Sayaka, at least. You'll just blame the other ones, without regard for something as trivial as logic.
Snatching the next basket of biscuits as it arrives, you quietly indulge, letting the others talk while you figure out how to proceed from here....
To be continued...
