A story told in snippets exploring the potential consequences of blindly following the Path to Victory. Fairly OP power for an OC. He doesn't get too much screentime but then again neither does anyone else. Story complete.

As pointed out to me, it wasn't much of a summary. So changed it up a little bit. Expanded on the title a little as well.. was just 'Portals to Revenge'

The Path to Victory is not perfect, nor does it explain the consequences of its steps or tasks.

A roughly 10k word completish (more proofing required) story told in snippets about various groups.

Author's Note
After a not so brief hiatus the muse has returned, possibly helped by a very relaxing holiday where I didn't think about work for more that half an hour total. Put pen to paper, or rather finger to phone and pumped out close to 10k words in this series of snippets that tells the story and could almost be posted as a one shot. But no. I'm breaking it into six parts each with between 1.1k to 2.1k words over three to six snippets and will be posting it over the next six or so days.

Already, proofread the whole thing a couple of times but still picking up errors each time I glance at it so part one follows which has had the most proofreading and hopefully the third and fourth proofreads have cleared most of the rest of the errors (and I'll be sure to fix any more as they pointed out to me). Others to be posted in quick succession once the proofreading starts becoming too painful for me to bear.

I would still like to continue my incomplete stories here and elsewhere and I certainly don't want to start posting any of my other incomplete stories till at least one of those already released are finished. This is only getting posted as its pretty much complete.

"Next item. Round up of surprises and any items that just don't feel right. Reminder; if you have decided two or more times that it is not important or worth mentioning then it probably is."

Contessa spoke up, "Whilst retrieving an item for a path a trigger occurred in the vicinity."

There was a pause but it was soon clear she had said as much as she had meant to.

"What happened then?" a mildly frustrated Eidolon asked.

"Nothing of import. I completed the path by making sure a lawyer in Syracuse got his life saving medicine."

"What about from where you took it from. Do we need to deal with the new trigger and or any witnesses?"

"Steps needed to deal with any problems for Cauldron caused by my actions… none needed. Steps needed to cover up my actions… none needed." she answered without inflection or any tells, fake or otherwise.

"What was the item?"

"An EpiPen brand medical auto injector."

"Did anything change on any of the major paths?", Alexandria injected into the two and fro between Eidolon and Contessa.

"No."

"What's the importance of the lawyer?" Eidolon quickly interjected.

"He'll be contacting us requesting a vial in the next future."

Alexandra shared a glance with Eidolon then shrugged, "Okay. Anything else for this item?"

The guard let out a bored yawn as he gazed out the window at the large decorative fountain, it was expensive, required a lot of maintenance and was extremely ugly. Sadly, for the guard it really was about the only thing he could see from his guard post.

Six months in and he was still struggling with the monotony of the work. In between multiple layers of security his position was one of the least important. Sentries and roaming guards protected the gates and storage buildings. Further in closer to the main residence were the senior guards and then the bodyguards. He looked forward to the day when he could move to any other location.

But for all the boredom and lack of responsibility at least he was rewarded well. Pay and other benefits for loyal workers of the boss were very generous. Being able to be generous was also a status symbol and thankfully one, unlike the fountain, that benefited him. Something he reminded himself of frequently of during his long boring shifts.

He flexed his shoulders and adjusted his grip on his rifle just as a muffled gunshot rang out. He instantly took two steps away from the window and went down to one knee raising his rifle up to point at the doorway. His trainer would have been impressed with his response if he had seen that. Unfortunately for said trainer he was currently slumping over due to a large calibre round that has destroyed a window, his good looks, and the paint job of the wall behind him some fifty yards away.

Two more shots rang out. The direction was difficult to determine from within his hallway but the guard was pretty sure they were from two different directions. That said coordinated assault to him. He reached for his radio as he caught a flicker of light only a short distance away from him in the direction of the exterior door. Then he knew no more as a round hit him above his left eye. Death was instantaneous.

The bullet and a significant amount of his head ended up in a large indoor fernery. The bullet itself would come to rest a third of the way through the largest fern's trunk leaving a clear indicator of the direction it was travelling. An investigator would later determine from the ballistic investigation that someone had fired through the open doorway before the guard could react.

The guard crumpled to the floor. The door remained closed.

1.3

The young man ensued his rifle was safe before he returned it to its high quality carry bag. His friend handed him the now neatly folded paper target with the three dozen neat holes scattered amongst the three target areas and he tucked it away in one of the exterior pockets. It had been a good session. If he kept at it, he was sure he had a chance to place next week' s club tournament.

He glanced once more down the range at the other targets that other shooters were taking shots at. His thoughts were on the competition and how the other shooters. He didn't spare a thought of the destination of the rounds he had fired. Why would he? If he had been asked, he would have confidently stated that every round fired had ended up in the layers of material at the far end. He would have been very surprised that over a thousand miles away in a number of weeks his and other rounds from his range would be in the hands of investigators trying to solve the mystery of who had raided and wiped out one of the biggest drug cartels in one afternoon. The investigators didn't come close to the truth.

1.4

In a deep undergrowth cave, I looked at the piles of guns, money, food, and other supplies that I had looted from the cartel and wondered what the hell I was supposed to do with them all.

Scouting out the cartel via portals had well and truly put paid to any feeling of guilt for what I had done and looting them to the ground as well as destroying as many of the drugs and facilities that I didn't want or violent lot just made sense. If anything, what I had witnessed has made me feel guilty for how I had acted in the past. I had nothing on the actions of the men I spied on but I could see some similarities in attitudes and I didn't like it one bit.

It had felt good, and maybe that wasn't such a good sign, to be solely responsible for preventing that behaviour in future. But now I was wondering what to do with hundreds of guns, literally millions if not tens of millions of cash and probably more than that worth of other items. The three luxury cars had to be expensive, I'd have to look up prices for those later. It wasn't like I could fence more than a few items or needed anything that the money could buy.

After a few more minutes of just walking around the stacked boxes checking their contents with the use of my power more to satisfy my curiosity than anything else I finally sighed and my next step had me back into my kitchen where I proceeded to make myself a sandwich.

Then I retreated to my bedroom. Connected my monitor, keyboard, and mouse to a PC on the other side of the planet and started looking at prices of luxury cars. I'd use a more local computer to check the price of driving lessons. Hopefully I could find one that would accept cash and wouldn't ask too many questions.

Richard Theodore Kertianit the Third looked over his recent purchases. A mixed lot with a slight leaning towards the Asian. Not uncommon from the region.

Lucas brought over a summary as put together by the doctor. "All in good condition, Sir. A few bruises on the rowdier ones but nothing that will be visible in a few week. Two unspoilt. Both mid-teens."

Richard nodded and didn't look at the summary. He was beyond such things. That's why he had people like Lucas to deal with the degenerates they used to collect the merchandise and the doctors they used to check it over and all the other various people that needed to be paid off.

"Good, good. Pay them and load the product."

He went to turn away when he heard the first gunshot.

"Damn. Oliver Gurseva, get me out of here."

Oliver appeared beside him a moment later appearing as always when he heard his name called by one of his employers. He wrapped his arms around Richard and preparing to jump back.

He was still waiting for the prearranged return call when a portal appeared with a small glint unnoticed by both Richard and Oliver. Even if it had been noticed the moment of warning wouldn't have been enough.

The round that came through it took Oliver in the back of the head. Richard had only a moment to see the front of Oliver's head explode above him before the portal repositioned and a second round entered his skull just beside his left ear.

In just under a minute everyone except the tied up girls was dead. Only two had required more than a single bullet, one because of a misfired round and the other because of an unseen obstruction.

Then it was just a matter of pushing buttons on a phone using a stick poked through a portal to call 911 on a few phones until, finally a police car turned up to investigate.

"What's so important that I had to be dragged down here? I'm dealing with the biggest shit show of all time and you are playing secret hush hush games." Piggot snarled.

She trusted Rennick enough to head across to the Morgue when he first called but the three calls she fielded during the ride over had soured her mood and had her start second guessing the whole trip. There was so much more she could be doing from her office.

Any doubts on the importance of the trip vanished when the pathologist lifted the sheets off two of the covered figures briefly.

Rennick nodded in understanding at her sudden lack of movement or words, "Yeah, it's bad. Some might say good but you know what this means…. The other four are nothing special. Two common grunts and two are… were midlevel which would have been significant any other time. All were known to us but effectively untouchable."

What we know is that all six arrived in two vehicles, a large commercial van, and an SUV, at the Blarken Street site. Police were already onsite and you know how it would have gone down. However, they heard gunshots just as the two vehicles pulled to a halt at the barriers.

The officers took cover and prepared to return fire but nothing more happened. Took them awhile to check everything but prelim suggests snippers on at least two of the nearby roofs. One of those roofs had police overwatch stationed on it. No one saw anything or anyone beside the vehicles stopping."

"Who knows?" Piggot's eyes hadn't left the sheet now back covering over the face of the first body.

"Us four", he included the pathologist and her assistant in a small wave. "Captain Lee, Captain Nicoles, three of his site team. They all know to keep it quiet. They know how big this is." He frowned, wondering if he had made a bad pun.

He continued after a short pause when his boss made no comment, "Some people are going to know something is up. The loading of the bodies wasn't standard and of course this is the first instance where we have.. 'victims' hit inside a car and in a fairly public location. Mind you it would have been bad for Nicoles and his men otherwise."

"Right. Clear the room, I have a call to make. You two as well." Piggot's voice was deathly calm.

A moment later the call went through.

"Yes?" The voice at the other end snapped.

"I need support and before you reject it again take a look." Piggot switched the camera view and lifted the sheets off first Lung and then Oni Lee.

Kaiser frowned, "Why has it taken this long?"

"The PRT enacted master stranger protocols as the stories didn't match up. Our man would have raised flags if he had pushed for details with that still in place." Krieg responded calmly.

"Fine, so what do you have?"

"Victor and I pretty much agree with what the PRT and the police investigators have come up with in this case.

Four of our members plus two prospectives were running an initiation, they had selected a middle aged half African seamstress and her quarter blood son. Our four had roughed them up a bit and the two prospectives were ready to be fully blooded when our six were shot dead in quick succession.

This happened within at maximum five seconds and possibly as short as two. Shots from at least three different directions. Each a lethal headshot. That's the sum total of the confirmed facts."

He paused a moment, "What we believe is that there was a team of at least three but probably six trained military or ex-military that had set up the ambush. The area has been prepped both for the kill and retrieval and covering up of evidence. This could have been done with significant skill and planning or a power. The three possible ambush locations were absolutely clean."

Krieg frown deepened before he continued, "The only events that share any similarity is the recent spate of unexplained cartels killings in Mexico and Colombia. Two of those killings happened prior to the initiation killing and two more have occurred since."

"That hardly tells me who is responsible."

Krieg nodded, "I know and headquarters also have no more information." He ignored the way Kaiser winced whenever he used the word headquarters, Kaiser didn't like to be reminded he was only a small part of a bigger organisation.

"The killings in Colombia are already impacting fundraising significantly. This is likely to get worse until new supply chains are put in place. No effort is being spared in tracking the culprits down. They are not happy but all our thinkers are drawing a blank on who is behind this so they have started reaching out to third parties."

Kaiser gritted his teeth, "No leads at all?"

Krieg shook his head, "Not yet. Only thing of note is that as far as we can tell no parahumans or cartels employing parahumans onsite have been targeted so far."

"Keep looking and tell Victor to come and see me. If we can't find the perpetrator than we need a patsy to satisfy the brothers. They need an outlet for their anger."

Krieg nodded, "Yes, Sir."

2.4

"Tom, you okay there?"

I blinked and turned my focus to the teacher. Had I drifted off? I looked down at the worksheet that I was halfway through. A quick glance using my power to create microscopic portals around the room showed that I was just as far through as most of the class.

"Sir?"

Mr Trull gave me a tight smile, "Good progress there Tom but please stay back a moment after class."

I nodded; my confusion probably apparent. Once I was alone again, I couldn't help but frown. Whilst I hasn't been paying all that much attention in class, I was sure I was no less attentive than most of the class. That meant it was the other matter.

I completed the work sheet. Mostly my own work but rather than struggle through the two extended problems I cribbed them from two students that were at my level making sure only that I wasn't copying some obvious and possibly unique mistake. Overkill probably for Winslow.

As the bell rang for lunch, I headed up to the teacher's desk as the rest of the class streamed past. One very minor shoulder check that I ignored.

Mr Trull until the room was empty bar the two us before speaking, "I heard you quit the team."

I nodded, it hadn't been a very popular decision and I expected I'd be getting flak about that for a long time. Shoulder checks were par for the course and I didn't care. I could give as good as I got.

There was a long pause as Mr Trull searched for the right words. I didn't feel the need to help, I was pretty sure I knew what was coming and I'd been there enough times before. Seemed there was little communication between the teachers here. Not surprising at all.

"So, I don't know if you are aware but we have a counselling service. Medhall provide funding for.. people in need. It's.."

Mr Trull trailed off as I raised my hand, "I've seeing someone thanks. Parents, I mean dad works for Medhall. Mum did. It's fine but thanks Mr Trull. Can I go now?"

"Oh. Okay. Yeah. Go ahead Tom." Mr Trull was obviously grateful that the conversation was over.

"Boy, get me a beer!"

I sighed and pulled myself up out of bed. It was late and I was tired but I knew better than to dawdle.

"Okay dad."

I quickly made my way to the fridge knowing in advance that there was no beer. I constantly scanned ahead of myself constantly with micro portals from walking to sleeping. From my discussions and post appointment spying on my Medhall provided therapist that was likely some sort of coping mechanism based on distractions.

Why the therapist was reporting the supposedly confidential discussions direct to Medhall's upper management I was still unsure of. My best guess was they were wondering if I was a parahuman but they didn't right out say it one way or the other. I would continue to spy until I had an answer to that.

Still the fridge needed to be opened as dad, while he might be stinking drunk, certainly wasn't deaf. I had learned that lesson the hard way.

I moved a few things around in the fridge then called out, "There's none in here. Just cola."

I was careful not to say anything about why that was. I had learnt that new lesson the same the way two days ago. Bruises had almost faded which was surprising. I was currently working out a way to confirm if I had scored a minor regeneration power as well. It was certainly very minor as it didn't deaden pain which would make it more challenging to test.

"Go down to George's and get me a six pack." He immediately closed back.

I glanced at the clock in my room though a portal then hesitantly called out, "Ah. Its ten o'clock dad."

"So? He's open twenty four."

I sighed and tried another tact. "I don't have any money?"

"Just tell him who it's for. He knows I'm good for it. Stop fucking around and git going."

I sighed. "Okay dad." And so, I headed out at ten at night through a rather rough neighbourhood to buy alcohol for my drunk dad.

Unsurprisingly I had no issue even though Tony knew I was underage. He even arranged for a couple of the local boys wearing the colors to walk me home.

A month ago, I would have been chuffed at the attention. A month ago, my mum was still alive. A month ago, I hadn't seen a cape openly steal the medicine she desperately needed right in front of me. A month ago, I hadn't used my powers to find and spy on some the Empire gatherings planning to join them and ask for they help in getting revenge on the cape that killed my mum. A month ago, I hadn't discovered the depravities of the so called master race that my drunken abusive dad so loved. A month ago, I hadn't decided to get my revenge alone.

good kid in a really shitty situation can't say i wouldn't do the same as him . thanks for the chapter and for writing

"Explain." Alexandra demanded.

"They are invisible to the path. I can't even work around it. Paths seem fine but when I go to enact, people are not where they are supposed to be. Usually because they are dead. Only when I personally visit the morgue and look upon the bodies does the path adjust but mostly it's still wrong. I can't rely on any Paths on Earth Bet that have had any Woe involvement."

"We have to put an end to this. We are losing all control." Eidolon stated with cold fury.

"How? Do you have any power that will let us find them? Half of our plans are in tatters. We have already lost over forty capes. Most of them had useful powers."

"Forty! I hadn't heard that number."

"The Seven, Heartbreaker and his entourage, Nilbog, Lung and Oni Lee are all dead but being kept quiet. You would have heard of most of the others."

"Crawler and Siberian? How did they kill them?"

"We were able to get some footage of Crawler's end. Some sort of grid trap that he ran into. Sliced him into small pieces. Most of which just vanished. The rest of the Seven were taken out by a massive explosion of superhot plasma, nothing left but a few charred pieces of internal reinforcements Bonesaw added and fragments of Spheres' body. They used the same plasma attack on Nilbog's creations and land."

"To kill the dead man pathogens?"

"That's the most likely theory. Not thinking confirmed as most thinkers are having problems with Woe."

"Do we have any leads?"

"Brockton Bay has had a larger that average number of incidents and is statistically significant when you map the known incidents. Also it was the site of the first high level parahuman death and the first city to have the illegal sex trade stomped on."

"I'm sick of that city. Does Coil have any leads?"

Contessa shook her head, "No, but he is planning to start using his power to investigate. Trying to set a trap of sorts to see how it all goes down."

"Fine. Well let's put together a plan to keep a close eye on him."

"Do you think he'll be able to find something out?"

"More likely he'll end up like the others but maybe we can learn something from how that happens."

3.2

"Is this legitimate and how did it happen?"

Victor nodded, "I am confident that he believes it and it does explain a few unusual things we hadn't been able to work out. Looks like Lung and Oni Lee turned up at the Blarken Whorehouse but didn't make it out before Woe got to them. Cops and PRT covered it up pretty well but our supporter at the morgue got curious about all the secrecy and managed to sneak access to the security cameras at just the right time."

"Well done. Reward him handsomely. So, this Woe, no actions against us since that first interrupted initiation. Maybe a supporter or with he right leanings but with a connection to that particular woman, the boy or race. Have we confirmed that neither the mother nor the son triggered?"

Victor nodded, "That's confirmed. Both are relatively stable in the hospital and under watch. Both have been in and out of consciousness and the times don't match up."

"See if Othala can swing by and give them a boost, couldn't hurt in case it was just a poorly chosen target by some our faithful and they have already paid for that mistake. She won't have a problem with that will she?"

"No, it won't be a problem."

"Well then, time to expand. Get the maps and let's start making plans." Kaiser turned to Fenja, "Call Krieg and Hookwolf, tell them to start readying the faithful and then to come here."

3.3

"Tarvy! We have another group. Go.." Captain Lee paused and looked closely at the short stocky man, "have you slept at all?"

Lieutenant Tarvydas nodded, "Yeah. Got a nap in after the Blarken House pick up."

"So, like half an hour max then. Not good enough, get some proper rest. I'll find someone else."

Tarvy shook his head, "You know I'm the best and a lack of sleep is nothing compared to the hell that these girls have been though. I'll get some shuteye and also make sure Esse gets some as well after this lot. She's also running on fumes."

Lee nodded; he would have liked to argue but Tarvy was the best. Unthreatening, calm and well spoken. He also worked well with Esse and the other nurses. That and he really didn't have anyone available. He would have to pull someone off a site and that would cause all sorts of issues even if everyone would nod in understand as they ripped into him.

He glanced back down at the preliminary report, six ladies of varying ages. The only good thing was that no effing teens in this lot. The previous group had been heartbreaking. He kept reading, twenty three dead, a third had been near the girls the rest had been preparing drugs, relaxing or sleeping. Seemed that Woe, and damn, even he was starting to use that name in his head, hadn't cared about that and shoot them whilst they slept. Personally, he had no problem with that which meant he had to be careful what he and his men said on top of everything else.

The PRT were still making noises about taking over but weren't pushing as hard since he has asked what they planned to do with all the victims. More recently they had had 'offered' assistance as part of a joint effort. Well, they had certainly assisted with the creation of additional paperwork and oversight, assistance in actually processing the scenes or dealing with the victims was yet to eventuate, and by victims he wasn't including those that were dead. Good riddance to them.

As he started writing up a requisitions to house the newest arrivals, he felt conflicted. If there were any more in similar situation, he certainly didn't want them to be left in it for a second longer. However, he had no idea how he or his team could handle another scene tonight… this morning. No. He didn't want to think down those lines.

He looked up, "whoever is saving those girls, keep at it, you are the best thing this city has had in years."

There was no answer and he doubted anyone had heard him.

3.4

I sat twiddling my thumbs in history as our teacher once again went off track when another student asked another question about the biggest story in the news for two weeks straight now. Woe, or as it was first coined by a talk show host, the 'War On Evil!' The presenter had been lambasted for many of his comments and theories but the name had stuck. I was rather proud of it and it had in fact led me to look at other crimes outside of drug use. That had been very unpleasant but I felt the few, well actually - the many, sleepiness nights since then had been well worth it.

I had, perhaps foolishly, started looking too close to home but as each day my first portals had to be in line of sight it was close to home where I first saw the need for action. Only the need to actually find an active gun range prevented me from acting immediately and that had certainly been the cause of a horrible ten minutes. I had since made alternate plans in case a quicker response was needed in future.

I had the location of twenty different gun ranges memorised and it usually didn't take long to leapfrog portals to one or more of them. Quicker when I wasn't freaking out and trying to rush. That still satisfied most of my planned crime elimination sessions.

I knew I had started being a little less cautious, however every session was saving people. Each day I personally saved a dozen or more and possibly many more indirectly. If I stopped that meant someone wasn't being saved. Some criminal was getting away with murder or worse. No one else could…. No that wasn't true. There was someone else that had similar power but they didn't target criminals.

I wasn't how they picked their targets but I would ensure they would pay when I found them and finding them was a problem I was already working on.

I find myself gritting my teeth and slowly, very slowly, managed to relax my jaw.

The teacher was still rambling on about how Woe's actions had similarities to Roman law. What a moron, didn't he realise that he wasted a quarter of each lesson answering inane questions only asked so the students could laugh at him after class?

I let my mind's eye roam over the nearby streets and sadly found yet another crime in progress only a block away. Very brazen though I guess I hadn't targeted individuals before. Maybe it was too close to school but I'd just make sure to target a few other individuals in other cities, I didn't expect any issues finding crime given how prevalent it had turned out to be.

What I didn't expect was for one of my classmates to jerk in surprise when I linked the local portal to the one set up to receive a bullet across the country.

I might have guessed it was a coincidence if she hasn't then turned to face the direction where they would be rapist was now slumping to the ground.

I closed the link and noticed, though one of the micro portals I kept nearby to monitor my surroundings, a slight frown appearing at that action as well.

I opened and closed a series of micro portals facing her and then did the same in the alleyway but she didn't react to those. I then tested creating a new portal near the school and linked it to a portal I had earlier formed in Australia. I kept them both microscopic, the only use linking those had so far been so I could listen to international radio stations and to improve my TV's reception but I wanted to know if it was the size or the linking that had caught her attention.

She reacted again. Not so obvious and she didn't turn her head. But I still caught that same small flinch.

I left the portal open and used my ability to view and sense what was near any of my portals to see if I could sense anything about her power when I noticed an unusual collection of insects gathering near both portals.

Now fairly sure I knew what her power was I conducted a new test by switching the portals with ones six inches wide and immediately relinking those. They would be visible but there was nothing bar the insects near either end. I then waited until she had a number of insects travel through the portal in both directions noting that she favoured brings insects from Australia to Brockton Bay. She even had a few suicide against the, what were beyond sharp, edges of the portals.

I admired how quickly she had reacted to and explored my portals so I left them open a full minute before I closed the link and replaced both portals with microscopic versions so I could continue to watch the locations.

The insects on the school side continued to investigate the area for a minute, flying back and forth across the area, before dispersing all at once in three distinct directions whilst those on the other side scattered randomly as soon as the link was broken with some actually attacking each other.

I wasn't great with science but even I could make a pretty solid hypothesis based on that test.

Taylor Hebert, the underdog of the school, was a cape with the power to control insects at least a block and a half away from her and even further if I linked portals in her range. I wasn't afraid of insects as such but I had seen enough horror movies to know just how scary that power could be.

I looked over at Emma Barnes who was once again glaring at Taylor. How we weren't already facing a Carrie situation I had no idea.

Coil stood behind the three men monitoring the camera feeds. He had been assured that every angle, every window and every roof top was covered. He has his man, his mining pigeon, standing ready outside the door of the apartment. He checked both the monitors showing the exterior and interior once more.

He split the timeline.

In his first timeline he shook his head slightly as sat down. He pulled up the first on the PRT reports he had on his to-read list.

In his second timeline he nodded and gave a quick hand signal to his communications office. Then he leaned forward on the small barrier he had installed for just that purpose and started scanning the array of monitors.

He spared barely a glance at the bloody work of his man, his focus on the views showing rooftops and windows. His man was midway through the torture and slaughter of the small family when he gave another signal.

There was a pause whilst the call was made, then his man all but screamed into the microphone, "Someone is being killed or tortured or something next door. There's so much screaming please you have to send someone. I'm scared. I don't want to die. It's coming for apartment two Regent Court, Northville. Is that my door? I think they are coming for me now…"

His comms office cut the connection and took a sip of water before calmly returning to monitoring the various police and other emergency bands.

A moment later he turned to Coil, "Police are five minutes out."

Coil triggered a countdown on one screen and then waited.

In his first timeline he continued to try and read the PRT reports for a few minutes before frowning and closing them, too distracted to take anything in.

In the second timeline he watched as the first patrol car arrived. He let them enter the apartment doing no more than have his man onsite warned, the man did surprisingly well against them. He would need to remember that.

The second patrol car he had taken care of by one of his sniper teams.

He waited and watched the fallout for another ten minutes before, frustrated, he closed that timeline.

Standing up he coldly ordered, "Call them all back."

Without a glance back he left the room splitting the timeline as he turned in two different directions. In the first he headed to his office to try and read those reports. In the other he headed further into his base to burn off some anger.

"Here's that list you wanted. Couldn't find a cape that fit the bill but a few are kinda close. If you squint. Did find a dozen or so unexplained occurrences that could be related, also found a few unlikely accidents that happened to people who investigated these deeply so be careful. This all a little stranger than your normal asks. Care to fill me in a bit more, want to make sure I'm covered."

Cranial nodded, "Take a look under that tarp." He waited for the gasp then grinned, "Now imagine sitting at your desk when notepad opens up and a message starts being typed in front of you. Requesting to buy some investigative services from Toybox. Well, I wasn't exactly happy someone had hacked my computer but after I had calmed down and stopped yelling, I asked the question how we would be paid. Then there was a loud thud and when I turned around that was there."

"Right where it is now?"

"Well yeah, not like I can fit a pallet jack or forklift through my door to move it."

"How much cash is there?"

"Somewhere between twenty and eighty million. It's mixed denominations and mixed currencies, so not exactly sure."

"Fuck."

"Yeah."

"And it was dropped behind you, here, which is supposedly unreachable."

"Yeah"

"Fuck"

"Yeah"

They both shared a short dry laugh.

"What Dodge think?"

"He has no idea, didn't think it was possible either and I'm sure he truly believed that. He tried making a new pocket that was even more impenetrable. After running it up he found a trading card he has been searching for waiting there for him with a small ribbon around it. He is still alternating between freaking out and celebrating."

"Well at least whoever it is has a sense of humour." eyes wandered back to the pile. "Well.."

"Take as much as you want or can carry, they said that was just the down payment."

"Fuck"

"Yeah"

Armsmaster refrained from the temptation to rerun the test protocol, it was unnecessary and inefficient to run it more than three times but just standing and waiting also reeked of wasted time.

He had his playlist, his protocols, his tools and weapons prepared to inflict maximum damage in the minimum amount of time. Time was always precious but when facing a foe who could use it against you ever millisecond saved was worth more than gold.

The five minute warning sounded and Eidolon strode forward and turned to face the oncoming Endbringer. Most everyone shifted and some raised arms or weapons. Armsmaster refrained from moving or changing his position, the most efficient time was already programmed in one his many timers.

Armsmaster secondary targeting optics locked onto the tiny dot in the distance. He was disappointed that it wasn't picking up enough details to pick up a range. He flexed his muscles and took three deep breaths.

At the fifty five second mark he readied himself.

Then he waited in the front row of a hundred plus parahumans ready to do battle to save Canberra, capital city of Australia, from the Simurgh.

And waited.

An internal alarm triggered at thirty two seconds to attack range but the dot looked too far and after two more seconds passed the promised general alert didn't go out.

He looked towards Eidolon but he was busy talking on a radio. Armsmaster froze, he had no idea he has missed Eidolon pulling out that. He glanced up again but the dot still looked no closer.

He checked his range finder but it still wasn't active. He checked his timers but the estimated time contact time had now passed and they were all sitting on zero waiting to be reset.

He looked towards the dot again just in time to see a bright flash and then there was nothing but clear sky. He alongside many others started frantically scanning the sky looking for that dot.

Two flyers took off and headed to investigate. One returned when ordered to by a hero in a metallic costume but the other, a known villain, continued on.

A commotion nearby caught his attention, Eidolon was amongst one of the small clusters of parahumans that had formed demanding a replay of something.

Armsmaster quickly pushed his way through the crowd mindless of the complaints and bruises that his powered armour was causing. He wouldn't remember till later that he had turned down the feedback sensors in preparation of fighting the Simurgh.

He was in time to watch the Australian Tinker Longshot project a replay of his footage on what looked like a conjured wall of marble.

The quality was very impressive though there was some visual aberration around the outside that should have been easy enough to correct during playback.

The Simurgh looked static in the picture but a range counter on the display indicated that she was still rapidly approaching. The display also showed it was playing at a tenth of real-time.

The footage played for a few seconds and then without any warning the Simurgh simply fell apart. Wings, feathers, and the majority of her body including her shoulders, head, legs and arms broke into relatively small uneven pieces. Armsmaster quickly calculated using its known size that most would have been no more than six inches across.

The only exception to that was a large platinum-white ball that only had minor scarring. Armsmaster quickly calculated was about two and a half foot in diameter. It would have only barely fit in the Simurgh's oversized torso and really wouldn't have left much room for anything around it. A rather inefficient design if it had been for a living body with living organs, arteries, and veins around it.

Armsmaster noted that the range counter had stopped though the time clock kept moving as the pieces apart from the sphere started falling.

A few seconds passed before a wave of visible distortion seemed to roll over and around the sphere like a thick liquid poured in from the side. He noted some similarities to heat distortion but heard someone mutter that it looked like light distortion as seen around black holes which he recognized as a far more accurate descriptor.

The distortion around the sphere became more pronounced and then vanished leaving just the sphere with noticeably more scars than before.

A few more seconds passed and then the distortions returned again as suddenly as they had disappeared. He presumed they were resuming their attack, seeking a way of damaging what was most likely the remaining core of the creature.

There was an aborted noise from someone behind him as the distortions vanished once more revealing new scars present but still no deeper than before.

They all watched this reoccur four times over the period of a minute with a number of the crowd starting to egg the unknown assailant on.

Then on the seventh attack using the distortion the spherical core of the Simugh suddenly distorted crazily, expanding in some directions up to five times its previous diameter. There was a bright flash that turned the entire image white and when it cleared there was just a picture of clear sky.

Legend spoke up at that point facing Eidolon but loud enough that everyone could hear, "Watchdog has just confirmed with independent thinkers that there are no more markers regarding Simurgh's future actions in play. It's gone."

There was only a split second of quiet before the first cheer and a much longer time before the cheering ended.

The carryon was rather inefficient and unfortunately so loud that Armsmaster couldn't make out Eidolon's reply to Legend or make out why he alone looked rather upset and angry.

"Fuck yeah. Bout time someone downed that bitch. I'm going out boy to celebrate. Don't touch my beer."

Like I would. I sank into my comfortable bed nursing my head. The pain was already fading and I was still smiling broadly. I had proved myself against one of the toughest opponents there was. I was ready. As soon as I found who was responsible for my mum's death, I would make them pay.

"Stupid girl. This time I'll give you an injury you won't be able to walk off." Hookwolf smirked as he waved two foot long and razor sharp claws in front of her face.

Vista desperately but futilely tried to free herself from the vice like grip that his left hand had around her neck but even frantically swinging and kicking with her legs wasn't helping. Nothing she tried and she could do nothing but watch as his right hand lifted up and then swung around down towards her dangling legs.

Then the snarling face of Hookwolf vanished and was for a brief moment replaced by a view of clear sky. Clear blue sky that certainly didn't match the fact that previously Hookwolf's visage had been blocking the majority of a shopping centre under an overcast sky.

She also noted a series of events in that single second. A time frame that would later be confirmed though analysis of camera footage from Armsmaster and Kidwin.

One was that window like view of the clear blue sky only covered the top two thirds of Hookwolf and excluded his left forearm and hand. She could still see that arm seemingly severed but still holding her up by her neck. She expected the grip to loosen and to fall but the grip remained firm and the hand and arm stationary stayed suspended in midair. Further below it and partially obscured she could also see his metal covered feet standing in asphalt.

Next, she saw everything bar the arm suddenly washed out by a blindingly bright light that seemed to be originating from behind the window into the sky. She couldn't turn her head with Hookwolfs fingers and thumb cruelly locking her head facing forward but she could just see to the side Armsmaster, who had been - she hoped - charging to her rescue, flinch back with his armour reflecting the painfully bright light.

The third thing she noticed was her power telling her that the area in front of her was untouchable because of the Hookwolf's presence and that the exact same area was totally void of life and could be flexed though her power as much as she liked. She instinctively reached with her power and twisted and pushed the space away and then her mind was suddenly on fire. The pain was so much worse than what Hookwolf had done so far and so deep in her head that her head felt like it must have grown to the size of a planet to fit the pain in.

Then that the pain was gone, the second was over. Hookwolf's grip faltered and as she finally started to fall, she finally noted that the blue sky had been replaced by a strangely melted metal statue silhouetted in front of a shopping centre and an overcast sky.

Then everything went black as her mind decided it had had enough for the day and she barely noticed the heat coming off the metal statue.

"A massive five way brawl the like we haven't seen since Butcher and the Teeth departed Brockton Bay. What looks to have started as a territory grab by the Empire into ABB territory turned into first a three then expanded quickly into a four way fight when local police trying to assist local residences were caught between the Empire and ABB goons and newly arrived Merchants goons backed by Skidmark and Squealer who arrived in a number of her monstrous vehicles."

A moment was given to show both shaky footage and a few stills of the Villains and Squealer's vehicles.

"Empire parahumans, who had up to now consisted of Hookwolf and Crusader were shortly reinforced by Rune who brought Victor and Krieg with her on a flying platform."

The presenter turned to the side to focus on the footage playing behind him, showing the three flying overhead, presumably caught whilst they were on the way to the battle.

He turned back to the camera, "The protectorate arrived in force moments later. Armsmaster leading Assault and Velocity into battle against Hookwolf, Krieg and Skidmark whilst Miss Militia, Battery and their newest member Sandstone attempted to force Crusader, Victor and Squealer to back down."

"Vista, Kidwin and Aegis made a valiant attempt to rescue the beleaguered police and civilians caught in the middle when an unfortunate deflection of one of Miss Militia's concussion grenades sent Hookwolf flying into the middle of the wards.

What we believe then happened is that a quick thinking Vista twisted space around the base of the nearby street pole causing it to smash into Hookwolf. Sadly, this mostly just angered him and for a moment it looked like we were about to lose our cutest and smallest Ward with Hookwolf taking her by the neck and about to undoubtedly cut her into ribbons which we all know he was more than willing and capable of."

There was a pause as a split screen put a media released image of a smiling a waving Vista from a recent meet and greet beside a familiar shot of a snarling Hookwolf recovered from police footage after a well know police homicide months earlier.

"Then Woe befell the legions of evil!" The announce all but cheered. "Hookwolf was melted in a way remarkably similar to the reports of what befell Elisburg whilst every other Empire, ABB or Merchant was dispatched with a round to the head. No mercy to evil seems to be the message from Woe today."

The image froze catching the presenter with his mouth open to continue. Everyone in the room turned their attention back to Piggot.

"This has escalated beyond belief. It would have been a nightmare with just the six officer and fifteen civilian casualties. But now I am fielding as many requests to put a Kill Order on Woe as I am for people stating he or she should be rewarded with the Medal of Honour and a Presidential pardon."

She shook her head, "Appendix two of the report is Vista's report. It's been annotated, expanded, and confirmed with assistance from her therapist and a series of thinkers. Please read over it but essentially it boils down to Woe shielded her by opening up a portal facing another location whilst using superheated plasma to melt Hookwolf. The shielding wasn't perfect and only protected her from the initial blast. She required healing from burns from both reflected heat as well as ambient heat from Hookwolf's corpse whilst both Armsmaster and Kidwin required healing for their exposure to the plasma as well. Thanks to Panacea and New Wave for the assistance there." She nodded to each named individual as they were named barring the one exception.

She went on to explain the missing Ward, "Vista is currently taking a break out of state but by initial reports is already doing well. This stays in the room but does need to be said and kept in mind when next speaking with her. The initial fallout did cause some existing family tension to boil over and a few facts came to light. As a direct result Vista is currently a voluntary ward of the state. There will be a separate discussion regarding that later with the relevant people. Any questions on anything apart from Vista's current status?"

"Is a kill order likely?" Miss Militia asked.

Piggot shook her head, "It hasn't hit the public yet but a news source has already linked the death of the Seven to Woe. They are holding back the announcement till this afternoon due to a promise of exclusivity on some information. But after that it would be career, politically and possibly literal suicide to call for that. If it is also confirmed that they were responsible for the Simurgh's defeat then they could probably run for President and the president himself would probably lead the voting him or her in."

"I thought Woe's involvement had been disproved?" Carol Dallon interjected up.

Piggot shook her head, "It's not likely to remain secret for much longer to anyone but that was pure misinformation and a holding tactic. The initial attack against the Simurgh used is near identical to the attack used against Crawler. The plasma attacks against the rest and now Hookwolf link them altogether. Thinkers are still arguing if it's one immensely powerful individual or a well-coordinated team but either way they will be pretty much untouchable if they ever come forward."

"Scion level."

Piggot nodded to Assault, "You're not wrong." unsaid went the 'this time' part.

I just looked blankly at the officer until they spoke again, "Is there anyone we can call for you?"

I nodded, pulled up my aunt's number on my phone and handed it to the officer. He wrote down the name and number on pad and then handed that to his colleague who moved a few steps away to call her. The officer then returned my phone to me.

"Can I get you anything?"

I shrugged, "A coke?"

I resisted the urge to smile when I thought about what the officer would find in the fridge. Tony had been around earlier and dumped off a few slabs of beer for dad and a dozen cokes for me. So, the fridge was eighty percent beer, ten percent coke and ten percent discount microwave meals.

"Hello, this is officer Sullivan. I'm with your nephew Tom Weber… no he's fine.. Unfortunately his father… No that's not it… ohh.. Well that won't be an issue now. Mr Weber was involved in a parahuman altercation yesterday… yes.. we'll I can't comment on that but I understand your feelings. Yes, that was why I was calling. Yes, at his home. Yes. We will wait. You're welcome."

The officers shared a look and then turned to me.

I shrugged, "Tony at the local bottle shop probably be the only one that'll miss him."

I sipped on my coke and waited for Aunt Eleanor to come around.

Later I slowly picked up the M16 assault rifle. I'd been in a rush to save Vista and hadn't managed to get a portal to an active gun range in time so the backup plan had to be used. Seemed I had accidentally solved a lot of my problems with it.

I looked around my underground lair, well-lit by two small portals letting sunlight steam in from the other side of the world and filled with loot from hundreds of criminals worldwide. Criminals that were no longer active thanks to me.

I wiped the dust from the weapon. I had been careless in dropping it amongst spent casings and dust after gunning down dozens of Empire, ABB and Merchant gang members and parahumans and my dad.

I'd need to get a proper weapon mount to set it in a position of pride but for now on top of a pallet of gold bars would do.

Tattletale looked at the bank knowing this was a bad idea. Still, it was better than the other options that were either in the very bad, extremely bad or suicidally bad realm.

She wondered how long it had been since one of her choices had been a good idea. She couldn't actually remember.

"Let's go. In five minutes, the shift will be changing and I need to be at the desk at that time to ensure the alarm is under our control."

Grue cracked his fingers whilst Regent rolled his eyes and then his shoulders and did a little pose to annoy Grue. Bitch pushed her dogs from oversized to monstrous as she led them out of the van.

The robbery started smoothly. Occasional updates came though the hidden earpiece from Coil's new communications officer. A significant change that initial surprised and then confused her until she realised just how afraid of Woe Coil was. That fact actually explained just about all his recent actions except why he wanted this bank robbed today. It probably led back to Woe but she couldn't work out how.

PRT busy, police response minimal, only three Wards enroute. Bank security neutralised, patrons under control, and that was Amy Dallon also known as Panacea with a phone that had recently been used to send a text. Well damn.

"Grue, we need to pick up the pace. Panacea is in the bank which means there is a very good chance that Glory Girl is on her way."

She tapped on her ear to indicate to the comms operator that she wanted an update. She wanted to see what Coil had for her after that update.

"Delay her. Bonus of" the command was cut off by the first of a series of gunshots muffled strangely through the noise cancellation built into the comms officer's headset. Her power told her that the shots were from a single assault fired at full auto and that each shot was hitting a different target in the room at the other end of her radio and that no shots were missing. Her power unhelpful also told her that they were almost certainly all head shots and that there would need no more help or direction coming from Coil or his mercenaries.

She was free. If she could only get out of the current situation.

"We need to leave now, drop everything. Woe got to our boss." She didn't wait for an answer but instead sprinted for the door only to see it smash open in front of her.

She skidded to a halt, looked back at her teammates, back to Glory Girl, then past her to the four wards getting ready to change in. She threw her hands into the air, "I surrender."

That felt like a good idea.

Dinah smiled for what felt like the first time in days as all the numbers changed.

She run back inside and hugged her mum.

"Headache better?"

"Yep!"

Weaver patrolled the streets looking for trouble. Her focus wasn't on the block she was walking on but rather the insects she had out scouting the blocks in front of her and to the side.

She carried a solid extendable baton, multiple cans of pepper spray and a very good supply of EpiPens. She didn't carry any fear. She was a hero and she had support.

This was nothing like her first patrol two weeks ago. That felt like a long time ago; she had bit off more than she could chew with trying to face off against some druggies attempting to break into a shop.

She has been slowly gaining ground against them in hand to hand. Perfect situational awareness using insects was a good advantage in a fight but she had also was still just a novice. She was taking martial arts lessons now to improve that. Thankfully they hadn't been skilled fighters.

Then one had pulled a gun. She freaked and then a shot rang out. But there was no pain and the only one to fall over was the one holding the gun. It had been fired but the bullet had hit him and not her. Whilst her first guess was that it must have been some sort of Vista like twisting of space to fold it back, she now was positive a portal in front of the gun had caught the bullet and sent it out another portal facing back towards the gunner.

The rest of the gang had surrendered shortly after and soon after she was getting the 'Join the wards' spiel. Like that would ever happen after what she discovered when she was trying to locate the source of the weird portals around Winslow.

When she got home later that night, she found a box waiting on her doorstep filled with several useful items. A much better baton, canisters of special forces strength pepper spray, packets of zip ties, two burner phones, a Kevlar vest, cash, and a note that stated, 'keep up the good work'.

So, she was.

Her awareness suddenly expanded an extra block south so she turned that way and reached out through the new insects in her range. Some men were acting rather suspiciously near some motorcycles.

Time to go be a hero.

Deep below the surface a creature stirred restlessly as it waited for the next time it would be forced into action.

It shifted slightly when it noticed a strange flickering nearby, some unusual overlapping of space and then a localised ripple of space and time that darted in and out of the nearby dimensions before moving on. Very unusual but nothing that it had been ordered to act on so it didn't. It hoped it might mean a change in the status quo though its expectations weren't great. It has been stuck in the same cycle for over a millennia.

The ripple travelled to-and-fro flittering between even more dimensions and locations. Two intellects watched it, one understood and was satisfied, the other was confused and concerned and sent a report up. The report was ignored.

Eidolon was fighting against a small time villain outside an unimportant country town. Part of his mandated PR activity. He was corralling the kinetic controller with blasts of ice towards a containment foam grenade he had set up earlier when he lost his third power slot.

He paused shocked which meant he was only barely able to dodge a rock hurled his way by the villain.

He sent an overpowered beam of cold at the villain and screamed "Stop that!" with such venom that the villain actually did pause for a moment though he still blocking the beam with the large boulder he was using for defence.

Then his second slot disappeared.

The villain lifted another large rock.

Eidolon switched his last power and in a fraction of a second disintegrated all the cameras and the villain.

"Door." he called and then stepped through the portal as his last slot disappeared.

Behind him a slight ripple in space seemed to stare for a very long time at where the portal had appeared.

Then it moved forward and followed it.

"Hey Tom, I heard you were looking to join the track team?"

"Yeah, things got a bit complicated there with life but things have settled down now and I like being active. I've always enjoyed running and pushing myself." I answered with a grin.

"Well, we'd be glad to have you. After losing Sophie when she transferred, we need some new talent and we've all seen your performance on the field. There is no question on if you have the talent or not. You're not planning to return to football then?"

"Naah, I've lost my taste for the game. Too many people to keep track of when playing. I want to narrow my focus."

"Well in that case. Welcome to the team!"

"In breaking news, it has been confirmed that worldwide that there has been no sighting of Scion, Alexandria, Eidolon or Legend for eight days. Also missing from the side of good is Protectorate Chief Director Rebecca Costa-Brown. Latest wins against the forces of Evil include Saint and Michael Three of the Dragon-Slayers and Bastard Son of the Elite. These three are all attributed to Woe and it is unclear if this is in retaliation or in any way related to our missing heroes. The full story at seven."

The End.

A nice , heart-warming story without the usual grimdark of Worm. It was great seeing Taylor being a hero without having to go through the shit she suffered as Skitter. Great stuff!

Thanks for the story! Good to see a happy ending, unlike your last story. Sparky never got to play with his band ever again.

I'm a bit surprised he decided to ice Scion too, but I guess once he discovered the Cauldron base, he found out what was going on.

Thanks. Sparky is never far from my thoughts. I just need a longer break to get myself in the mood before I return to his story. The music dose deserve some more screen-time.

Tom investigated Behemoth which led him to Scion as well as Eidolon. Both were obvious threats at that point. He's fairly direct when it comes to dealing with threats...

Thanks to all those that liked, commented or just read through the entire thing.

"Door"

Contessa stepped through into the storage room twelve as the door appeared. Her right foot passed the boundary only milliseconds after it appeared.

Without hesitation she choose an unlabeled box stored amongst many identical on the heavy industrial shelving that filled the large room.

Placing it on the floor she opened it to reveal an untidy pile of random electronics parts.

With smooth efficient movements she spent the next few minutes extracting a large selection of parts and placing them in a rubbish bag before she closed and returned the box.

A rough knot closed the bag before she she turned to face the open area and pulled from the path she was following a picture of the alley she needed, "Door"

She stepped forward and then stumbled as she aborted the movement when the door failed to materialize. For a moment there was a flash of emotion across her face as she pictured her foot being cut off by the door. But after catching her balance with a quick application of a short path there was still no door and her foot was still in one piece.

The path had remained unchanged so she reattempted the visualization and call, "Door"

This time she waited.

No door materialized.

"Fastest path to Doormarker and Clairvoyent." she said aloud. The beginning of a panic causing her to choice the slowed option.

She grimaced and snarled, "Fastest path to Doormarker and Clairvoyent without using their powers."

She turned to face the physical door of storage room twelve, a door that she had never actually used, a door that she would never get to use as the first of a new clip of 5.56mm caliber rounds took her in the side of the head. The following rounds followed her down as she fell to the floor. Not a single one missing though she was already dead by the second round.

--

In another room two figures lay in their beds with blood soaking into their pillows.

Alexandria would discover them like that an hour later.

Legend would find Contessa's body two days later.

Eidolon didn't help with any of the searches.

Finally got to reading it all, I enjoyed your take on quiet revenge with a unique power that resolved so quickly. Thanks for sharing your story!
