Right-o. A ton of people seem to be moving their old timelines from the board to here, so I thought I'd do that to some extent. This was my first TL on the board at that, so it still has a special place in my heart. Maybe I can keep this going if people like it here.

A bored ASB decides that it would be a good idea to shake up the playing field on earth. It decides that it will ISOT countries back in time depending on population.
Rules: For every 2 million people, it is set back one year. Americans from 1855, and Germans from 1976 etc. are put into the same world. Only the current territory of the country goes. Countries between 40 and 75 million are sent back per 1.5 million people. Countries under 40 million people have their amount set down to 1 year per 1 million just so they don't get too much of an advantage. Countries with less than 1 million residents and disputed areas are left untouched, i.e. Crimea, Fiji, Kosovo, Djibouti.

Shitty map of the situation of the ISOT.

Skippy the ASB was bored with his new planet sim one day and decided to check up on his favorite project of all, Earth. It'd been, what, 135 earth years? Boy did their year cycle go by quick. It was the year 2017 apparently. Ah, a European war, a world war, a depression, another world war, a state of tensions, a state of peace…and no major wars in the past 70 years! Things had gotten boring, the world was for the most part united! This cold war sequel wasn't as promising as the first anyways...Well he could always do an ISOT. He hadn't done THAT in a while. But what could he do? He thought about it for a second before getting an idea.

ISOT's involving the entire planet were quite rare. And if he remembered correctly would probably a bit of work. But it would sure be something quite interesting to work out. He pulled up his database on country statistics and looked at populations. Ignoring the fact that there was a quintupled population, he noticed the most populous countries also were one of the most powerful, naturally. How would an ISOT change things in this world?

Looking over the world populations, he thought about how to divvy things by population. Best of all in this scenario, Belgium and Israel, his pet countries, will not be drastically changed! The scale would be graduated of course, don't give the smaller and medium sized countries too much of an advantage so quickly... 2 years back for countries over 75 million people. 1.5 for those between 35-75 million. And he would move 1 year per million for the rest.

He looked it over. "Hmmm, pre-civil war America, I hated that country anyways, too much of a wank...better throw it some bone of a sort...And now we have a divided Germany, an independent Poland, a cruel Russian dictator, and a 1970s Great Britain! In one world too!" This was going to take some time... He started his ISOT'ing with the former Ottoman territory of Djibouti. Well that was a weird name. An earth day and 150 something countries later he finally finished his work. He pulled back his seat and watched the show that unfolded.

***
Vatican City had had a lot of tourists, this is a surprise to none. Because of this, even though it had a reported population of 800, about 15,000 people came along with Vatican City for the ride that was the ISOT. The strange flashing lights were seen as signs of the end-times. The lights made it impossible to really see much beyond the clouds that suddenly gathered around the sky, and made the Italian border surrounding them impossible to see. They were unable to leave, but this was seen shrugged off as God making sure his children won't miss the Second Coming. The air of the place was oddly calm, except for a few who believed they were going to hell soon. Well, what else could this be other than the end of the world? There was an uneasy atmosphere about the micronation. Many people just looked at the sky, waiting for the savior to come, when the lights stopped dramatically. Many confused tourists just kept on staring at the sky, wondering what all that was about. They had been trapped in the Vatican for an entire day and most of the people there were starving. A massive crowd started dispersing from the historic site. Some grumbled about missing their flight and were thankful that now they were able to leave. The tourists would soon get other troubles on their hands. That came when the first across the border noticed something… Italy looked different.

Rome, 1970's.

Different was an understatement. Once the trouble of, probably never seeing their friends again…or having a home to go back to been done with, the first thought in the minds of many of the people in the Vatican was "What year is it?" Word spread relatively quickly throughout the tiny country. 1977, this was agreed upon by locals who were just as confused. That explained the "no internet" part. Luckily the Vatican had cell towers. Most saw their calls were never answered. The fact it was 1977 made some Italians in the Vatican shudder at the thought. They knew what was going on right now.

Communist protesters in Italy

The Years of Lead were in swing throughout Italy. But for now not much technology was changed at least so far in the course of history. Except possibly the news of the future. Aldo Moro would be found dead in a car trunk in Rome next year. That news would change the events of Italy for sure. Except you can't blame people for a crime they haven't committed yet. No one was thinking about that yet. The first priority was to figure out what was going on worldwide. The most obvious idea to the people in Rome was that just Vatican City was brought back in time to a 1970's Europe. Communications with other countries had been stalled too during the ISOT, so that proved that the weirdness affected the whole of Europe. The situation in other countries like Britain were unclear or not made public, and attempts to reach out to the United States didn't work either. Global communications were for the moment at a standstill. News quickly spread from border regions, France looked about the same time period as Italy, and if it had moved at all, probably only moved a few years. Word from the Swiss and Slovenians were that they were from similar times than those in the Vatican.

Pope Francis made an unexpected statement to his children, stating the current situation fairly quickly. Everyone heard to see the news. First, the force behind this was unknown, but was likely an act of God, the most likely situation right now. Yes the Italy they knew was gone and replaced with one from 1977. France was not from the same year, but was close. It was from 1973, itself. Spain was from the year 1986. Global communication had been disrupted by "The Jump." Any contact made with countries would have to be done by actually going there for the next few days. He announced that contact with the UK had finally been reached, and the year was 1974. He affirmed as of now there seemed to be no rhyme or reason for why these countries were sent back in time to where they were. Maybe it was by simple population of countries, but if then, what was the scale? Apparently Germany was from 1976, which didn't make sense seeing it had a bit more people than Italy. And in the 70s that there were Two Germanys. The Eastern Bloc couldn't be reached for now either. Not for lack of trying, but because in response to the event, the Eastern Bloc seemed to have cut off contact to the world, the reasons were unclear. But they were affected by the event for sure.

Technology from the Uptimers really had little on their hands really able to be replicated. Though pickpockets had a field day swiping these strange devices from people and selling them on the black market. But smart phones, while a futuristic concept, couldn't really be mass produced. Reverse engineering a charger for a phone was easier then the phone itself...As if Smart Phones would be made again any time soon. They wouldn't know that Apple probably wasn't in the position to release a new iPhone any time soon.

"Oh well. This won't do at all. There are so many of these tiny island countries! They're all Pacific Islands anyways, they won't notice if I change things." -Skippy

Oceania, excluding Australia, Papua New Guinea, and New Zealand had all been sent back in time as if they were one country, back in time by 5 years. This included the U.S. state of Hawaii, the country of Fiji, the Solomon Islands, Vanatu, New Caledonia, both Samoa's, etc.

Regions of Oceania

The ASB had little in the way of knowledge of Oceania, and sent both Australia and New Zealand together to the year 1989. From now the time of consolidation began. Niue, previously in free association with New Zealand, petitioned to join Tonga, which was granted. The island nation had been suffering from a steady loss of people from the island to New Zealand, which stopped after recent events. The ISOT was a time of mourning for the majority of people that lost a relative or friend to the ISOT. While New Zealand was still around, they were in no position to help the people of their nation. The Cook Islands were in a similar position to Niue as well, and was annexed into the nation of Porinetia, formerly French Polynesia. Tokelau, formerly a New Zealand territory, joined the nation of Samoa. Palau, dependent on the US, and Nauru, dependent on Australia, joined Micronesia. Tuvalu remained independent. One crisis in Nauru which received international backlash was that of what to do with the internment camp on Nauruan soil, which were filled with illegal immigrant caught in Australia. The short answer was they were all sent in a cramped plane back to Australia, with the camp shut down.

Easter Island stayed with Chile despite the time difference of the ISOT. About 300 people tourists were in the island for the ISOT, most of whom, like the other 6,000 tourists in the Pacific islands at the time, relocated to Hawai'i.

The territory of New Caledonia and the collectivity Wallis and Funtana declared independence from France to create an independent New Caledonia. The Marshall Islands, the American territories of Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands joined Hawaii, which at this point declared itself an independent nation along with Alaska and Puerto Rico. American Samoa had rejoined Samoa.

The Federated States of Micronesia (with its new holdings of Nauru and Palau), entered a state of Free Association with the state of Hawaii, refusing annexation. The American owned Jarvis, Baker and Howard islands had been left unclaimed by the country of Hawaii, and was snatched up by Kiribati. The tiny Piticairn Islands stayed with the UK, because it's small population and isolation meant it couldn't handle all its internal matters, and loyalty to the UK was still strong.

...Back in the U.S. the First Fiji Expedition was chartered to take course the next month in the United States, a show of military force for Fiji to protect American interests. The ISOT made the United States cancel its plans, and in official announcement by Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama, he threatened President Pierce, stating any attempt by down timers to interfere in Fiji would be repulsed militarily. The gall of the president to threaten one of the largest countries on earth from his position as a leader of a tiny island nation showed the confidence the Fijians had in their ability to protect themselves from the U.S. The down timers were humiliated by the entire event, and some (mostly ignored) radicals even called for invasion. Whether or not Fiji could stand up to US, even one sent back from 150 years ago, is unknown, and moot anyways, the creation of the Up-timer Countries Defense Force came a few weeks later, with the goal of protecting uptime countries from interference from larger nations.

Both Hawaii and Fiji would be considered the leaders of Oceania, and in the immediate aftermath of the ISOT leading to when it joined the Uptime States in the American annexation, Hawaii became top dog among the islands.

Post ISOT Oceania.

Skippy knew that ordinarily ISOT's of this scale would lead to total economic collapse. Many ISOT's where even a regional power was taken away had led to global recessions, as his simulations showed time and time again. An ISOT where the entire world was reeling from a collapse that put the panics/depressions of previous eras to shame weren't at all interesting. Although interesting to map out, that would be an unintended side effect. The humans did not panic about the economic side effects the ISOT to bring, stock markets somehow stayed stable, etc. It worked somehow, and the world was set to recover economically from this in a couple years at this point after the countries of the world establish trade with each other and recover from the loss of major trading partners. It wasn't going to prevent trouble but hopefully may just lead to a mere hiccup...

San Marino, the other Italian microstate, was like the Vatican, kept in the year 2017. Like Vatican City, foreigners came along for the ride; 5,000 of them, mostly Italian. As the majority had no homes to come back to, they stayed in the country. Just like the Vatican, its impact on the surrounding country would be knowledge of uptime history to the people from '77.

The first butterflies in the wake of the ISOT began. Support for the Red Brigades were beginning to drop off after the news of what would happen to president Moro. The politician was placed under greater security to prevent a possible kidnapping. Not to mention the Butterflies to the Bologna Massacre and the revelation that the shadowy cabal, P2 existed. Silvio Berlusconi, then an unknown businessman would lose his chances at becoming leader of Italy, or even find success in business once news from the future of both his presidency and his membership in this secret society. Italy would not have to deal with his the torture of his presidency. Michele Sindona was found dead from what was (officially) a suicide after word filtered of his Mafia connections. A crackdown of the new Neo-fascist group, Nuclei Armati Rivoluzionari, behind the future attack in Bologna, left it castrated and no longer much of force. Other political figures that died OTL from assassinations were placed under tight security to prevent repeat attempts on their lives.

- -
The Bologna Massacre, prevented due to knowledge from uptimers in San Marino.

Giuseppe Calò of the Sicilian Mafia was arrested for crimes, while Roberto Calvi was put under arrest for suspicions that he was as well. Tommaso Buscetta, fearing for his life after news came he'd be an informant in the future, sought protection under the Italian government. With Italian agents on the trail of the leaders of many syndicates so quickly, the weakened gangs of Italy were quickly finding themselves in the death throes. And they made one last ditch effort to stop the bleeding.

The Sanmarinese Guard of the Rock was caught by surprise when the Camorra arrived.

20 made men armed with machine guns and explosives were enough to overwhelm the micronation. As reference, San Marino is a country with only 160 policemen, most of them inactive. The Italian authorities would usually step in for large matters like this, but when the authorities finally came, it was too late. 100 people died in the attack, most of which were native Sammarinese. The Palazzo Pubblico, the town hall and a famous site for tourists, was blown up with 5 kilograms of TNT. Mafia members fired at fleeing Sammarinese, though most were subdued through citizen arrest by the time authorities arrived. In total, 100 had died in the attacks. Entry into San Marino became much more tightened as a result of it. Eventually, crackdowns slowed down as the Italian government had seen the Mafia had been weakened enough to do little damage. The Mafia wouldn't be able to do repeat attacks anyways. With both fascist and communist militias quickly getting themselves losing support, Italy turned for the better as the Years of Lead had grinded to a halt.

The Lesser Antilles and the Windward islands were ISOT'd together back to the year 2012. Many of the independent countries had, at first, not been affected immediately. Aside from the obvious loss of tourism from the U.S., they still a new base of tourists from the Downtime States that wanted to see how life in the modern age was like, and to some extent, a smaller contigent of Americans in the rump United Uptime States. Regulations were surprisingly lax on treatment of downtimers. iPhones and other technology was getting smuggled into the D.S. by the week. There were high rates of downtimers causing public disturbances, largely based on differing social standards. Downtimers looked hungrily at the wealth of the tiny nations to their south, but for now the Caribbean was safe. William Walker was not yet a household name, the Uptime Countries Defense Force was mostly limited to Oceania.

Walker would become famous in the Caribbean for his attempted invasion of the Barbados.
Trinidad and Tobago, one of the wealthiest countries in the Caribbean was not as hard-hit from the ISOT as others. Its economy was mostly influenced by the oil industry, with mostly South American countries filling the void left behind by America. Other countries weren't as lucky, the hole left from losing their main source for tourists had caused economic slumps throughout the Caribbean. Attempts before the event to diversify the economy to prevent being too linked to the American economy began to speed up, but not fast enough. This dependence on America even showed in currency, the Barbadian and Bahamian dollars, among others, were both pegged to the US dollar. Most countries switched over to the East Caribbean Dollar, a common currency among countries in the Antilles that itself stopped pegging to the U.S. dollar. The Turks and Caicos used the USD outright, and continued using it despite the loss of most of the U.S.

Just as in Polynesia, some of the Caribbean holdings declared independence or otherwise split off from their home nations. The Turks and Caicos declared independence from the British crown, as did the Caymans. The British Virgin Islands and Anguilla joined the Uptime States, while Montseratt stayed with the United Kingdom after a referendum.

Guadeloupe and Martinique declared independence same from France. The Caribbean holdings of the Netherlands were not as affected by the less drastic change from the Dutch government and stayed. The Netherlands had still recognized the islands as the Netherlands Antilles, which had caused some problems. A referendum on the subject of the islands' status led to the previous status quo enjoyed by the former Netherlands Antilles to be continued. A similar thing happened in the ABC islands, with Curacao and Aruba staying constituent countries in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Although the U.S. dollar was still being used by the Hawaii and the Uptime States, the islands elected to switch over to the euro. The Venezuelan territories in the Caribbean also stayed with Venezuela, despite the 30 year difference.

Of the countries most dependent on tourism, the British Virgin Islands, Aruba, Anguilla, and the former Netherlands Antilles. Both received economic help from the Uptime States and the Netherlands, respectively. The British Virgin Islands fell back on being a tax haven, while the already volatile Anguillan economy finally tips over into recession despite annexation. Aruba was dependent on the U.S. for both tourism and having it as its main importer. Just like the British Virgin Islands, they expanded their financial sector to compensate somewhat. With more than a third of the island unemployed, it wouldn't be an easy task in any way. Countries like Antigua and Barbuda had to go it alone, but thankfully did not have to deal with Hurricane Irma on top of it.

Irma, 1 day before the ISOT.

Hurricane season was still active ISOT or not, and the weather in 2017 stayed the same going into the ISOT. Sadly this meant Irma reached landfall on the unsuspecting residents of the Turks and Caicos without their knowledge that same day. It killed 7, and damaged many properties. It destroyed the roofs of 80% of the South Caicos, and led to up to 550 million USD in damages. Damages in the Bahamas mostly occurred to the South, where Irma downed power lines and produced tornadoes to the north. In Cuba, estimated totals were in the range of 5 billion dollars. Worse off was Florida. The Floridian population at the time was estimated to be in the range of 90,000 people, of which a recorded 900 died from the storm, 100 of which were in the Florida Keys. Numerous rivers overflowed their banks, sometimes into residential areas, while future cities like the then small towns of Jacksonville and Tampa were crippled. Converted into uptime rates, it was equivalent to 5 billion dollars in damage caused.

Belize

"Oh no I forgot a couple of them....No one will mind if I forgot a few random countries!" -Skippy, making yet another mistake

The disappearance of Belize and of Mauritania, Paraguay, Yemen, and Slovenia can only be considered to be nothing short of baffling for all researchers attempting to figure out what had happened to the world that day. This along with the events in China, India, and the very existence of the Uptime States and a myriad other smaller instances seem to disprove the theory that the populations of the nations were what was behind when they had came from.

The outskirts of what had been Belize City. The country seemed to have come from a world where humans had never arrived.

The discovery of Belize's situation had become immediately apparent once the (to this day) unexplained blue lights had stopped. Border towns had found that where there were towns was suddenly uninhabited. The Belizean embassy lost communications with Belize during The Event, and at its end found that it had not returned when it had for most countries except those mentioned above. Early expeditions into the country along with news from locals in the area in both Mexico and Guatemala confirmed the news. Belize was gone. In the immediate aftermath the Belize question had for a short while been a subject of debate in Mexico and Guatemala. Some advocated giving the former nation to the Diaspora or overseas Belizeans, though most of them were also lost in The Event. Some Belizeans returned to settle the nation, but most Belizeans sought to move Mexico or Guatemala. Both countries made the decision to annex the former Belize. Guatemala, oddly enough, had claimed most of Belize as part of their nation before the disappearance. They staked a claim taking the majority of Belize, overlapping Mexico's claim.

The Overlapping claims of both countries

The Mexican and Guatemalan governments were not willing to go to war over Belize, and negotiations quickly ended with the former country being split along the Belize River. Territory governors were the Belizean ambassadors of the respective country. nations had gone.

IN ANOTHER WORLD

The 2017 anomaly, for those of you who remember, had been quite a puzzling event to people around the world. Lights descended at the borders of all but 5 nations, stopping people from leaving or entering countries for a full 24 hours. And when it ended, not much changed, except of course the sudden disappearance of most nations under a million people with the exception of Caribbean nations, Polynesia, and Belize. Belize later disappeared only 4 months late to the confusion of all of us. Mass chaos erupted in the wake of the event, but no other weird events have happened since...But life has gone on in (many of you never heard of Belize) and the world in general had gone on, though the disappearance of Vatican City has gotten the most news coverage. It still to this day a subject of theological debate throughout the world, with theories going from the Rapture happening early to proof religion is fake.

Impressive! Chaos will definitely come when Stalin hears about the future of the USSR...

Well the complicating factor is that 1944 'Russia' has Stalin but sizeable chunks of its military has been lost as they were in areas such as the Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltics or even further west, depending on exactly when in the year things were lost. The Ukraine has a lot less forces but their more modern and in 1989 - the date from which that comes - it might still have some of the nukes that it inherited from the Soviet Union - although they may be gone by this date.

Furthermore there is a powerful set of Soviet military forces in E Germany, dating from 1976, including nukes but how sustainable will they be and how loyal to Stalin would they be? Also might be other forces in Poland, which is from 1991 pretty much as the Warsaw Pact was disappearing. Facing them are large NATO forces in western Europe, which in bulk dates from the 70's but with smaller states from later. Going to mean a lot of confusion there and could see some people having two or more copies if they happened to be in the 'right' place at different times. Hopefully with the loss of contact with both Moscow and Washington no one does anything stupid and starts a nuclear exchange. True there are a lot less about but still quite a lot in Europe which could do a lot of damage.

One other complication in Britain is that with Britain from 1974 - including a much younger me! - and the Irish republic from 2013 the latter is going to be shocked at the sudden closing of the border. The 'troubles' are at about their bloodiest although hopefully news from later dates will help in hunting down the worst terrorist, from both extremes, and the Irish ones have lost their base of support in the republic.

Not sure how far back many of the Chinese provinces have gone but their economic dominance is going to be seriously affected if not totally destroyed while the differing dates is going to cause further chaos. Hopefully Mao and most of the communists have gone for good but your going to have provinces and warlords all over the place and time. This could prove very attractive to Stalin's Russia and I doubt anyone will be in a position/have the will to prevent it. :( - Although thinking about it 1994 Taiwan might have some say here. Especially if they develop nukes quickly. Korea could also become messy, but hopefully not too hot.

Britain has an empire again, but would expect it would seek to get shot of it ASAP although it might be drawn into trying to restore some order to India for a period. That is likely to become totally Muslim dominated however as apart from Muslin states in India in 1357 its two neighbours are much larger in population in comparison as well as far more advanced.

The US could be in an awkward position. 1970's or later western values are likely to disapprove very strongly of both slavery and its treatment of the native population. Also 1956 Mexico might have a few questions with 1855 US about what the latter was doing a few years before! Furthermore Alaska is an interesting point as in 1855 it was still part of Czarist Russia. Stalin might try and change it or it could end up as Canadian.

What happens to ships at sea? Guessing that they revert to their down-time equivalents, i.e. Britain has its 1974 navy including the original R force subs and US has its 'navy' from 1855? Coupled with accompanying merchant marines. Just had thoughts about if 1988 Argentina might try for another grab at the Falklands but they lost a lot in 82 and are in some turmoil at this time so hopefully note. Will have something of an advantage against 74 Britain but we did have a markedly bigger navy then and hopefully once warned about what happens the garrison will be boosted to play safe.

Vietnam will be messy. The communists are already on top and will probably win especially as the south has lost its support. On the other hand the north has lost supplies from both China and Russia and the US forces in Vietnam are literally stuck with no effective retreat.

Much of the world is likely to descend into chaos as old conflicts will be reopened by new opportunities.

Wonder how the atmosphere and environment are affected. I.e. are CO2 levels at 2017 levels or what as most of what industry is left is in the 1970s and 80's say when coal was still king and a lot of other areas will want to develop. Could be bad if CO2 levels are OTL as that could see them pushed higher.

PS the author is wrong at one point. In 74 both Labour and Tories were fairly rational and responsible. By 84 the latter had been taken over and the former seriously threatened by hard line fanatics and extremists. Hopefully this can be avoided on this world, although some reports about Thatcherism may make it sound too attractive to those Tories who don't look beyond the prolonged political domination.:o

September 7th, when I started the TL on the board.

Quite interesting. As a note, Hainan is still from a time close to Present Day.....the Chinese have nukes on Hainan. :thonk:

The ISOT is for a lack of a better term "messy". There are lot of exceptions to the rules that make no real sense, as I've mentioned in the posts. There's a rump uptime American state in roughly the Pacifica region that'll be important in influencing the U.S...

In 74 both Labour and Tories were fairly rational and responsible.
Just about every Brit I've met said that the 70s sucked for Britain, so that's really all I'm going off of for now.

International waters, the atmosphere, and near earth orbit stay in 2017.

I quite honestly have no clue. I haven't done any research about this, but I'm guessing that
without the Soviets around, the East Germans seize the opportunity and revolt. Without any hope of Soviet backup, (and with the Soviets being in WW2 meaning that anti-German sentiment is quite high), the GDR collapses and Germany reunifies. I'd say North and South Korea also reunify. Both are technologically similar to each other at this point, under dictatorships, and without their foreign backers. This and North Korea is gripping with the Great Famine......

Reddictredcoat

Thanks for the reply. I had forgotten about Hainan island as didn't realise it counted as a separate province. Other areas that might contain Chines nukes because of their relatively low population could be Tibet - although probably unlikely there would be any there OTL I suspect and Xinjiang, which is probably more likely because it is both their test site and also bordering Russia.

If international waters stay the same including vessels in them then a lot of modern warships, including US CVNs and missiles subs of various powers are still going to be present. Which dratically changes the situation for the US, Russia and also possibly China, at least for as long as those facilities can be maintained.

The 70's were a chaotic time for Britain but there was still a large degree of social cohesion and the hope of things getting better and problems being solved. After ~40 years of Thatcherism those two are pretty much out of the window for a hell of a lot of people. However prior to 1979 politics was a lot less divisive than it became in the 1980's.

Not sure about the Russians giving up East Germany and the rest of the Warsaw Pact that easily. At least once Stalin realises how many nukes he has to play with, although 1944 Russia communicating with the subs could be difficult. However the Soviet era forces in E Germany especially are pretty damned large and with the world in turmoil I'm not sure the west would be willing to face up to a Stalin led Russia over the issue of effectively driving him out of eastern Europe.

If the world atmosphere is largely as 2017 it could be a bad period for pushing global warming and the like even faster.:( Although the impact may be hidden somewhat by the amount of sulphur and nitrate pollution which seem to have had cooling effects.
