Poor Stranded Aces - OOC

If everyone else is going to go to the Great Market, Mattias will go as well. He might as well see if that scrounger pick lets him find anything useful in repairing the ship...

That makes three willing to go immediately to the market and thus the next event. One my "aye" to this and I'll give ~24+ hours to make counter arguments before closing and initiating that event.

You may talk about how you want to handle the market if you like, and the relevant stuff will be incorporated when I do the write-up.

Right, I think Claire's going to get in on this too.

Assuming we're going to be there for a few days, Claire's gonna spend the first one walking around, taking in the sights, rolling the encounter table, and checking out what wares are all available.

I'm really tempted to make something on the second day to try and sell, or impress people with. Maybe run it by Hye, and then have her introduce/sell the thing.

Of course, I should probably also look into an automated Crystal growth thing, since we can essentially just charge up a bunch of those things to use as a giant capacitor bank to provide energy so we can teleport our ship out of the moon. No rush on that, though.

Given the amount of energy we're talking about here, it'd probably take several months to store up enough power, even assuming we don't have to deal with diminishing returns.

Excellent. I'm sleepy from the Language Science Christmas Lunch (which was really dinner) and I've finally got Persona 3, so you guys have until tomorrow at the least to argue. Otherwise, the Great Market it is!

As for those crystals... yep, it's fairly likely you can use them as capacitors, but also yep, you're gonna need to do a study, and probably rig some kind of automated setup to handle it. Based purely on excess energy estimates from the reactor, you'll likely need a month. Shutting stuff on the ship down could reduce it further, but that's not really advisable, since the important things are doing stuff like preventing the ship from crumbling under its own weight, and maintaining standard gravity. Assuming a lossy energy transference, somewhere between two and six months to get the ship out into orbit, most likely.

Unless there's some sort of efficiency cap, of course. That would be bad.

Sweet. FES or normal edition?

In some ways, P4 is better (Tiredness is not a thing, more than one dungeon, control over other party members), but P3 is still pretty interesting.

But yeah, more than likely we'll hit a certain point with the crystals where it'll cost more and more to store in them, and if they outgrow out production facilities, it won't end well.

From that point, it turns into a question of how well they can store high levels of energy over time.

Of course, we're probably going to need to construct facilities planet-side in order to do this. And we're going to want to keep it discreet, since if they realize we're producing giant crystals of the same type they use for trade... Well. That probably won't end well.

Portable. Sweet, sweet disturbingly cheery naginata-wielding FMC for me! Earning thousands upon thousands of yen in that lonely very long hour, and spending it all on hookers and blow the arcade, because apparently Quiz Games are the superior means of improving your Academics. Who said video games aren't good for you?! :p

For the crystal... yeah. Stuff. The project will happily await the timeskip. :p

I'm gonna post the Great Market intro later today, but for the moment, have Hye's short guide to not fucking up while you're there.

Decent Behaviour during the Great Market
On the whole, since there are so many people, offence at most cultural faux pas is suspended, so doing a rude greeting or whatever is minor. A number of basic courtesy rules are in effect though.
1. Don't use telepathy until you've got someone's attention and they seem willing to talk to you.
2. Don't broadcast telepathy unless you're in a very special situation.
3. Ask before touching wares.
4. Violence is generally prohibited.
5. Don't be drunk on the streets.
6. Don't play around with fire.

Additionally, given that things are nominally run by the nomads, doing stuff to their birds is a big no-no. You can ride them, you can eat them, but they'll get really pissed if you treat them badly. Also, there are groups of nomads bearing blue and white flags on their back. Those are effectively police. You do what they say, or you end up in deep shit. Impersonate them and you end up in deeper shit. Assuming you get caught, of course.

Small-time peddling and the odd shell game or what have you are ignored by the authorities. Nobody cares to regulate those. The bigger arrangements and the caravans require guild protection and permits. Hye is just a bit above small-time, and she's affiliated with a guild, so she's supposed to check in, and she derives advantage anyhow since if she checks in she can put up her guild banner by her stall, or bargain with protection from her guild if she sells to another merchant. Of course that makes it harder to vanish, and sketchy deals get riskier since the guild might get involved, but for normal dealings its great.

That's pretty much the basics for you guys too. Stay small and nobody cares, start getting impressive and people will react. You should in particular be cautious about your magic. People with big reserves are odd but not amazing. Those happen reasonably regularly. But your usage is ridiculous, and it gets obvious.

What about feeding, petting, and playing with them?

IT LIVES.

New thread on RPOL has gone up. We begin the sequence on the Great Market!

Hopefully things will move a bit faster than, urk, three months. Well. Such things happen. Moving on!

Since GMing is hard work and university is graded whereas in GMing plagiarism is accepted, I am crowd sourcing my random event table from you guys.

Please all PM me (on RPOL on SB as you prefer) some number of amusing things that might happen at the market. Keep in mind that if you don't add negative stuff, I'll start reinterpreting. :3

I'd really like two things from each of you, a good and a bad, but MOAR is better, and really, just throw ideas at me. Less work, more stuff.

Now, other stuff.

Character Arcs!
I need these to get started. I know you're still getting used to your characters, but I'm having a bit of trouble giving you hooks, so please, PM me somewhere you'd like your characters to go, or just PM me to talk about it. We'll start fleshing stuff out, and then things can take off!

Also, don't worry about plausibility. I have a great plot device. It's hilarious. And I can do so many things with it. So just throw out things you'd like to see, or do! We'll figure something out.

IRC and IM
Uni and work and STUFF means I am pretty busy, so while I lurk #PoorStrandedAces pretty much constantly while home, this is no longer something I actually do that much, being out of the house for over half the day at times. So if you need to talk, either evenings, European time, weekends, or PMs. PMs are great.

New Mechanics!
I'll be making shit up. Suggestions are accepted. Might take me a bit of time (busy!), but there should be something soonish.

Incessant Overly Detailed Linguistic Details
Yes.

First New Mechanic
We're going to test this out. Basically, you get to define a virtue/vice-style thing for your character. Something virtuous that they aspire to. Whenever you act in accordance with this despite difficulties and real risk to yourself, you earn a plus point! Plus points can be redeemed for awesome prizes, such as "this time, instead of fickle dice gods, I declare I get a crit", which, gods know, you badly need. Opposite, you have your vice, which needs to be a bad thing. Whenever you act in accordance to the vice despite this being detrimental to you or those you care about, you get a minus point. Minus points can be used to do horrible things to people you don't like.

Oh, and both plus and minus points will be counted towards some sort of "character advancement" track, which may or may not turn into fabulous skill improvements or simply not matter depending on how this new and exciting bit of the game evolves.

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo~~!!

I'll talk to you about all the arcs, plot hooks, random encounters and the like tomorrow, though. I'm fairly tired and it's late, and methinks I'll need a clear head and a belly full of Pepsi before I delve into that kind of stuff.

You know, I can't help but think that this is actually directed specifically against me, considering my luck so far. :(

Mattias is probably going to want to wander around and listen to people talk first off. Start trying to get a handle on the local languages.

Language learning really isn't going to see much benefit until the timeskip. I mean, you can do this, sure, but a few hours just listening to people who are so linguistically distinct they might not actually have the same root language? You'd basically have to get a telepathic conversation going to get anywhere. You can even meaningfully segment the sound streams yet. I mean, yeah, if you had 1x[Linguistics], you could get something done, even if building up comprehension without even a shared language would be a royal pain, but without it, you're pretty much unable to do anything without more time and a dedicated partner.

Namlos has inserted his telepathic foot into his telepathic mouth!

Perhaps the first incident in a running theme, or gag?

Almost certainly related to whatever I declare his vice as being, at any rate.

(Usa says he's rolled for Hye's reaction, then said that the result was "interesting," but he's left me in suspense. Uwa, what's going to happen to poor, socially inept Namlos? Stay tuned to find out~~)

I figure that I may as well start now in the great market when I can listen to everyone, and I did choose to be a Polygot back here if you remember.

If nothing else, knowing how someone says 'kill them' in all the local languages is always a nice thing to know if you're at risk of someone saying it while pointing a finger at you.

I'll note publicly and very seriously that this will end up getting you into deep shit.

So yeah, keep digging that hole. :V

Hye Disapproves: -50 Points

The issue is that knowing lots of language and having the linguistic competence of constructing a grammar from nothing are very far apart. You have no context for distinguishing speech acts. You cannot, literally, learn anything about any language without an informant who will do the telepathy-language exchange trick. This is flatly impossible.

Worse still, it is really hard to pick out segments of a speech act in a language you don't know even if you know a word or phrase. Even more so due to dialectal variations, various phonetic phenomena, and the fairly rapid pace of speech, not to mention the significant variation in expressions possible, even for something like 'kill them'.

Seriously, just listening will gain you effectively nothing. It is probably the least efficient language learning method under the circumstances short of simply not interacting with any of the natives.

Transparent content in OOC posts may or may not reflect specific outcomes IC.

I can, however, with perfect confidence, state that Namlos mouth will get him in deep shit. Time of occurrence not specified. :V

Drat. Hum. Now I need to think up a new plan.

Yeah, sorry, I'll handwave lots of things, but when I'm actually a linguistics student, language gets an awful lot of realism. :p

You can learn language stuff though. Being a polyglot you'll even do it fairly fast. You could probably attain basic competence in one language if you spent half a day having a conversation with someone willing to do some teaching. Most of the others would need at least a full day. It just requires interaction with someone. Still, the market is a good place for that!

So some more information on Virtue/Vice.

The core principle is that both are things you do. Behaviours. Actions. Violently attacking people who dress in purple is - technically - a valid vice. I would veto it for other reasons, but it fulfils the basic criteria. Seething in hatred whenever you see people dressed in purple however would not fulfil the criteria however. It's too passive.

The other thing to keep in mind is that there should ideally be an element of risk to the action, something that puts something important into danger. Finally, both Vice and Virtue are inherently things your characters want to do. The Vice might be guilty, but if so it is a guilty pleasure, or perhaps a self-destructive urge. The Virtue is what you aspire to, your better self made manifest.

Neither are necessarily tied to actual conventional morality.

... The longer this game lasts, the more it becomes clear that we're apparently on the road to Dis-Function Junction.

EDIT

Right, Virtue and Vice.

Claire's Vice is Combat Aversion. She thinks that all disputes can be settled peacefully, or at least with resorting to violence. In actual combat, she may panic and end up missing, or freezing up at inopportune times. Outside of combat, she'll try to defuse situations that look like they're leading up to a physical conflict. She is willing to fight in defense of her own life and those of others though.

Her Virtue though, that's harder to define. I kind of want to do something with making people's lives better via her inventions and innovations. What do you guys think?

Having gotten a look at many of the characters in the game before it even started, I have to say that it was always pretty obvious to me. All the characters I saw had some pretty major issues of some sort, or at least the potential to easily fly off into loonie land.

Namlos is just the worst of the lot. :D

Speaking of which...

I ... imagine in great detail just what I'm going to do to Namlos and Mattias. It would involve glue, glitter, popcorn, tinsel, a levitation spell, a yule log, a high level binding array, and a short list of holiday favorites.
Wow, kinky. So I take it that's a yes? :p
