Entry #1: Getting Started

So... not totally sure how this is supposed to work. Supposedly, whatever I write in here is visible to an extradimensional hive mind that can give me superpowers and help me survive the coming days. Why would I be in need of aid to survive you might ask? Good question my alien friend(s)? I am in a very inhospitable place known as a desert with only my hoodie, pants, and a backpack full of food and water, two are things I need very badly. This, in case you were not aware is a highly undesirable state of affairs. If I'm unable to get back to civilization before I run out of these things, my body will no longer function, which means I'll be dead.

Apologies in advance if I come off as patronizing, but I've got no idea how much you know about humanity or earth. Hopefully I haven't just sparked a nerve and earned myself death by dehydration/starvation/snakes/maybe whatever you aliens have?

Anyways, the... person? Yeah, lets call them a person. That left me here and gave me this book said you may not be able to respond very often, but that all of your advice should be followed to the letter if I value my life. Which I do, I find my life is the most important thing I've ever owned. Moving on, they also claimed you could grant me incredible abilities that I would need in this world. Not totally sure what those abilities are or what sort of world would require them, but it assured me you would. so let me tell you a bit about myself so you're aware what kind of person is getting this power.

I am a young adult with no actual combat experience beyond a few fistfights, and I've found myself on the losing side of those conflicts quite literally every time. My body is lean, though not exceptionally strong, the thought of being struck is rather scary to me, and I don't think I've got what it takes to kill another human, or any relatively intelligent creature for that matter. Hopefully that last bit won't change too soon, I like not being a psychopath*. You may not find this terribly helpful, but I ask that you keep in mind I've little inkling of what a foreign mind such as your own considers important before doling out powers.

* An excessively violent person

Now, I might be overstepping my bounds with this next bit, but please just hear me out. Whatever ability you can give me is one I'll be grateful for, but I'd appreciate it if you didn't change my physical form too much, I'm pretty fond of not being an outcast from society you know? Also, speed or navigation of some kind could be kinda handy right now, seeing as I'm in a desert without too many supplies, but if that doesn't fit in the super-budget, I won't complain so long as I end up somewhere safe and alive.

Pretty sure that's all the important stuff for the moment, here's to hoping this isn't an incredibly elaborate hallucination brought on by heatstroke. Let me know if you've got any questions about anything or advice on how to get out of a damn desert without dying in the process.

Signed,

A/N

Greetings, and thank you for taking time out of your day to look at the fledgling work of someone without any other stories under their belt.

As you might've guessed, your role here is that of a patron deity for our unfortunate protagonist, a human from an earth much like our own, but without any DC comics. You'll provide them with power and guidance, hopefully leading them to greatness instead of a quick and miserable end. Whether that means carving out a land of your own, joining with heroes at the first opportunity, taking up a noble cause that requires grim deeds, or whatever goal you deign important. Your follower will obey pretty much all commands you deliver, save for those that seem utterly suicidal or pointless, so set out and make a mark on the world!

By the end of this Quest I'm hoping to have grown as a writer, so any critique you could provide in aiding me towards that goal would be much appreciated.

The first? Zerg I think, maybe Nids, but leaning towards Zerg.

Second? Not a bloody clue.

Third? Plasmids and ADAM. Or somekind of Nanomachines.

Come on, you know you want to. And doesn't this seem exactly like something that would happen to the poor girl in some universe?

I'm pretty sure this option is Plasmids, which is good because while the sword is awesome if it can apparently block freaking Superman, it's not very conducive to desert survival. Plasmids, on the other hand, are very versatile and include powers like telekinesis (allowing one to save on energy and thus on sweat) or light fires by snapping their fingers, which is good because I doubt the recipient of our gift knows much wilderness survival, and it gets damn cold in the desert at night. Oh, and ice powers, which equates to water production.

As for advice...

[X] Ration sweat, not water. Stay in the shade and limit your activities to the cooler parts of the night. Sipping water doesn't get it to the brain and vital organs where it's needed; people have died of dehydration with water in their canteens, so take a good drink when you need it. To find water, you have to be observant. Look for areas with a lot of green vegetation, and look out for convergences of birds and animals/animal trails. If you find a dry creek bed, dig around in the outside bend a bit; there might be some water under the surface. Also, you'll want a fire; that may seem odd to want in the desert, but the desert actually can get pretty cold at night, plus it'll keep animals away and you can cook food or purify water. And even if you're tired, it's best not to sit on hot ground, especially if the sun's beating down. If you had a mirror, that would be great for signals, but with your lack of resources your best bet is, again, fire. If you hear a noise, whistle in bursts of three (hope you're not one of those people who can't whistle). It'll both bring searchers to you and scare off animals, and if it's in bursts of three it won't be mistaken for anything else.

Entry #2: Extreme genetic modification has side effects, who knew?
Entry #2: Extreme genetic modification has side effects, who knew?

I don't have flesh on my fingers anymore, that's a thing that happened.

To be quite frank, for the last couple days I considered just tossing this book in the dunes after the... experience, your vial gave me. I'm not sure it's possible to convey that agony, the dozens of torturous sensations and torment I suffered for what felt like hours, though in reality was likely only a few minutes. As such I'm not going to bother with anything in depth, both to avoid horribly botching the description and because I would rather avoid that particular memory for the rest of my life. However, after having spent several days thinking on it I am now willing to acknowledge that pain can be a requirement for survival, though I expect a warning about such things in the future. That's not a request, by the way. Do keep in mind that despite its otherworldly properties, your book is quite flammable.

Shifting tracks to more important things, namely the exact effects of your concoction, those I'm aware of at any rate. As I mentioned previously, the flesh of my right hand's fingers has been roasted off and its fellows on the left simply disintegrated, exposing metallic bones underneath. Oddly enough, only my left hand's bones have been changed while the right appears to be mostly normal, though that's not the only difference. While the remains of my right hand seem to glow with barely constrained heat, my left has simply become black in color. "That's interesting, but back up a bit Anna," You might say, "If you don't have any fingers left, how could you possibly be writing?" I would clap and commend you for noticing this incredibly simple contradiction, and you'd probably get irritated at me for snarking at you, but that's a price I'm all too willing to pay.

There seems to be a sort of barrier just over my body and clothing. Normally it's completely clear like fine glass, but if sufficient force is applied a dim yellow sheen becomes visible. This barrier extends to where my fingers used to be and moves their skeletal remnants about as though they still possessed muscles. As you can imagine, I've found this ability rather handy.

Another ability of interest is that my right hand can manifest and launch blobs of liquid fire that detonate on contact, turning sand into glass while my left seems to form a powerful magnetic field. Both of these powers made me feel somewhat hungry afterwards, so I've refrained from further testing. Even so, I can't help but feel as though there's more to your vial's modifications than what I've discovered. However it's pretty difficult to make progress in figuring out what exactly I ought to be capable of without actually being able to experiment safely, so any information on how to actually use my new hands is welcomed.

Having said all that, let's talk about my current progress through the desert. Your advice was surprisingly helpful for an alien entity, though it'd be rather close-minded of me to assume only earth has harsh deserts. Anyway, truth be told that's most of the reason this book didn't serve as kindling post-vial. While there isn't much in the way of shade, some of the taller dunes and occasional outcroppings of rock cast shadows long enough for me to hide in during the day. I'm thankful for the brief respite they give me from the sun's burning rays, but mustering the will to leave those sanctums and trudge out through the sands again gets harder and harder each time. Regardless, those lethargic instincts are fairly easy to put off once the sun has gone down.

Speaking of my nights, those have gone fairly well. I make much more progress than in the day, and most of the cold is repelled by my right hand in its dormant state and thick hood, the latter of which I've been using as blanket to ward off sunlight during daytime. Unfortunately there's not much for me to burn other than my clothes and backpack while the hand seems to make me hunger whenever it's active, so that fire isn't happening. But even if my teeth start to chatter sometimes and the heat is utterly miserable, I've yet to sustain any significant burns or start turning blue.

While there's plenty of food left in my pack, most of which is labeled, "The remains of Crush and Squirt" water has become something of a problem. Though I started out with plenty, downing the vial left me in a state of disarray and very thirsty indeed. By the time I was thinking clearly again, three of nine canteens had been emptied. I've been careful with those that remain, but at this point there's only two left. I have been taking swigs instead of sips by the way, and while I haven't bothered experimenting to see if you're right about there being a difference my body does not seem truly dehydrated, with partial exception to my throat.

In better news, that bit water may only be a small problem because I'm fairly certain I've found a path to civilization! There's a set of tire tracks I've been following since yesterday and I can see something on the horizon. What that something is I'm not sure, but if someone. Hopefully the people there are friendly, but if they're not I have the barrier and my father did show me how to avoid notice, in cities at least.

Which reminds me, there was something I forgot to include in the last entry. My father taught me how to stay out of sight because he didn't want me to get into fights, but in case I did anyway he also...

*Pick Two
[-] ... made sure I knew how to handle and shoot a gun. There was a range not too far from our neighborhood, and after I showed my grasp of gun safety he'd take me there every few days and demonstrated his quite frankly ridiculous aim before telling me to match it. I never did of course, he's been shooting for two decades while I haven't even been alive that long.

[-] ... encouraged me read mother's medical books so I could patch up myself and others afterwards. Father's work gave me plenty of practical experience on the days he got back back from a job, sometimes with injuries a bit more severe than cuts and bruises. While I'm hardly a miracle worker, so long as the injury isn't incredibly serious I should be able to apply temporary solutions at the very least.

[-] ... made me run every single day so that I'd be able to get away from those who'd want to hurt me. It was difficult at first to even jog ten kilometers, but a week after we'd started I was running the whole way. Dad never let up though, and once he saw I could do that he added a hundred sit-ups, push-ups, and squats to the daily routine. Overall I'd say my fitness level, while hardly olympian, is actually sort of impressive.

Nothing else of note has happened, but I'll start writing in here on a somewhat daily basis going forward instead leaving it empty for days on end.

------------------

What direction will you direct Anna's efforts in developing her abilities?

[-] "Feel the lightning coursing in your veins and hear the sounds of crystals sprouting from barren ground. The power attained here shall be uncontrollable at first, launching killer shocks sometimes and nothing more than the charge of a simple taser at others. With practice however, this obstacle will be overcome."

[-] "Listen to whispers at the fringes of your mind, then twist the spirit within so that it does as you command. She will be weak in the beginning, not strong enough to dominate living creatures and costly to summon, but any machine will kneel to her will. Once you've come to grasp this technique more thoroughly, sapients shall become viable targets of her puppeteering."

[-] "Close your eyes before placing a finger to your pulse and feeling its rhythm. From there, imagine the weight of so many tons of water pressing down on creatures deep below the surface, all the way to the bottom of the ocean. This will let you wield a tendril holding a fraction of that terrifying weight, but learning to do anything more than flail it about is going to take two or three days of dedication."

Note: You can't unlock multiple plasmids in rapid succession because believe it or not, re-writing large portions of someone's genetic makeup in minutes without causing horrendous damage is actually quite difficult.

Anything else you'd tell her? Questions to ask?

[-] We are fairly certain you've been placed in a world full of people with extraordinary abilities. These people are called metahumans, and they are incredibly dangerous. While the most physically powerful one on earth acts relatively benevolent and maintains a group of like-minded metas, these so called, "Heroes" have allowed wars to rage across the middle east despite having the ability to end such conflicts within a week. Oh, and they field child soldiers too, just so you're aware. Combat wise you're not yet strong enough to tangle with most folks with superpowers, so if you see anyone wearing a bizarre garb or demonstrating superhuman abilities, try to be somewhere else.

[-] Every few days some fool who's found themselves in possession of incredible powers attempts to commit mass murder, subvert a government, doom the entire planet, or anything in between. While a few of these schemes succeed, obviously not including the world-threatening ones, the vast majority are stopped by a group that calls themselves, "The Justice League". These heroes also wield incredible abilities, but unlike those in the former category they're are the only reason this earth isn't dominated by metahuman warlords or alien tyrants. Once you've made it back to civilization, try to find some way to contact them, they'll help you out.

*Important Voting Info Inside*
If you didn't notice the asterisk just before your decision regarding what exactly Booker bothered to teach Anna, go back and highlight the space after it. The reason I hid that bit is simply because it felt wrong somehow no matter how I tried to format it. Like it didn't really fit in with with the rest.

Good news! this is the last Entry dealing with major aspects of character creation. Next chapter I'll get the plot proper rolling and you can start thinking about which how you'd like Anna to develop.

Other news that's good or bad depending on you perspective. This universe is going to be slightly AU in some aspects because I want the choice between Hero, Villain or middle ground to be a bit more complex than, "Do you feel like being nice, an utter asshole, or not care either way?" hopefully I can make that a reality, but we'll see. Certain powers might also be changed slightly to give you little surprises, but I don't intend to do that too often.

[X] Write-in; Look, I am honestly sorry about the pain and while we could have given you some other things they, while being less painful, would have only made your death more likely.

The first that we decided against were a small horde of poisonous alien monsters that would be under your control, but as they would have had to be sustained with food and water and would have killed anyone and anything they saw unless you were watching it seemed like a bad idea.

The second we dismissed was a magical sword and a gun that would have solved exactly none of the problems you are currently facing.

The last was to give you 'Biological Magic' or plasmids, a versatible power which should be of use in this enviroment.

Regardless, we do apologize for causing you suffering.

Knew I'd forgotten to mention something.

@PsyFarrow Can she drink the water she creates with Undertow, or is it salt water and thus worse than useless?

....

What the hell happened to her? I really didn't expect this. I thought the formula would cause pain, but not...whatever happened to her.

I feel bad now.
