Slight irregularity with the vote count. Red/Gray was actually the winner for appearance by 1, as McBirdie, UNKNOWN and Carstein also voted for the pic, it just wasn't counted that way by the tally.

The Battles Begin
Reaching out to the PokeBall marked with a leaf symbol, it burst open with a flash of greenish-yellow light, ending up as small, sharp-jawed leaf tortoise in your hands, not to heavy to hold as he looked to be, him sitting there chewing on some grass.

"Ah Turtwig, the Tiny Leaf Pokémon, a dependable enough decision" Rowan nodded.

Cyrus was about to speak up, but Cynthia then brushed past him and said "I've been... cautious how Gible will do against Ice types, those not in short supply in Sinnoh, so I'm feeling the Fire Starter's my best bet", taking the PokeBall which burst open to reveal a sparking Chimchar, who scratched itself behind its ear.

This left Cyrus simply staring down, eyes narrowed, at the last PokeBall on offer, which he took before anything else could happen. This left him with the blue penguin Piplup, who he barely chose to make eye contact with.

"Hey, have you guys ever battled before?" Cynthia turned around to Cyrus and you, raising Chimchar's PokeBall.

You just shook your head, while Cyrus replied "Extensively within Battle Simulators... but admittedly not once in actuality".

Cynthia then grinned "Okay then, how about you and Evelyn mark this occasion with your first real battle?".

"Whatever it is, just keep it outside," Rowan cut in with "I'm not about to have the stature of this place disturbed by inexperienced trainers".

You nodded, not really seeing any issue with this, but Cyrus on the other hand had to take a step back.
"What? But I'm at a direct type disadva- Oh fine then" he snarled, his eyes shifting over to you. "I doubt you would possess any sense for strategy anyway. Piplup, attack".

His Piplup waddled fast as it could over to you, but Turtwig seemed up to the fight. Your Starter though had to tuck itself into his shell as Cyrus' Piplup pounded on top, almost striking said shell like a drum.

"Feh, stop fooling around. Get back before that turtle breaks out of hiding" Cyrus gave the command through gritted teeth. His Piplup did try to turn its way around, but not before your Turtwig could promptly pounce on it and tackle it to the ground.

"What the- Don't just lie there, hit back!" Cyrus sounded like he could've snapped. His Piplup did try to kick your Turtwig out from under, but your tortoise was able to roll back onto his shell, while he got caught on his back for a while as Piplup then tried to ram him, he was able to flop back onto his feet and withdraw into his shell before Piplup could attack again.

Calling out to your Turtwig to tackle, one of the few commands he'd know at this early stage, your Starter leapt towards and rammed into the Piplup on his side. Even though the Piplup didn't quite look about to faint, by this point Cyrus was left clutching his head. "Why isn't it working- bah, return!" he hissed, calling Piplup back into its PokeBall.

Turtwig sure seemed pleased about this, closing his eyes and opening his mouth. Cynthia too was beaming at the whole sight, slowly clapping at your victory.
"Wow, you seem to be a natural at this, Evelyn! Ah, guess that'd make sense, even if that was your first battle, you would've been working with Pokémon a while before this, right?" she asked, spinning a PokeBall of her own on her figure before flicking it up to catch it.

"If your Turtwig's up for it, guess I should join in too," she went on to say "I ought to see what Chimchar can do, and I know Gible's always raring to go. Two against one I know, but you seem to have a decent handle on battling". That seemingly decided, she then sent out her Gible, its teeth already bared.

You shrugged, maybe beginner's luck right would be on your side? Still, unlike Cyrus who barely seemed interested, in this case you may have had to think about how to deal with a Dragon-type this early on:

[ ] Turtwig's a Grass-type, can they climb trees? You might want to get him somewhere he has the advantage, but you don't know if he can climb up fast enough...
[ ] Stay on the defensive, focus on shell withdrawal.
[ ] Just go all-out with attacking to try and get this over with.
[ ] Call back Turtwig and call things off, you'll give Cynthia a proper battle once you have a second Pokemon.
[ ] Write-in.

(Note: I wanted to use a remix of Cyrus' theme for this fight, but couldn't find one that really fit early-game, so went with a Galactic Grunt remix instead. No idea where I'll find an early game version of Cynthia's theme...

Rolled for Turtwig's Nature, and actually got Adamant which is pretty good, seeing how Torterra's mostly Physical. I was thinking of giving the Starters here their Hidden Abilities instead, although Turtwig's Shell Armour, while decent, isn't quite as good as Iron Fist or Defiant, so I was curious if anyone wanted to switch it for Strong Jaw?
Of course, this isn't going to be that mechanics-focused a Quest, although I might add in a dice roll for the next post's outcome.)

[X] Just go all-out with attacking to try and get this over with.

Just compared the stats of gible and turtwig and judging from the moveset, I'd say we'll have to take it out before any accuracy drops or sand tombs happen.

[X] Call back Turtwig and call things off, you'll give Cynthia a proper battle once you have a second Pokemon.

Yeah, this sounds better for Turtwig.

I would never choose anything else in this list.

He's a baby right now in terms of experience/level, so let's keep things simple.

simple commands for our new poke this time. No need to overcomplicate things.

No opinion on the Ability bits.

I don't think we can win two-on-one, against one Fire type, unless we try something daring.

Fire type probably doesn't matter because Chimchar doesn't know a fire move. But two versus one is probably a lost cause unless we've got a lot of withdraw stacks even before we took some damage from Piplup.
On top of that I don't really know if we have a reason to fight.

[X] Call back Turtwig and call things off, you'll give Cynthia a proper battle once you have a second Pokemon.

Training. Even if we lose, which we probably will, we will still gain more experience in battling. I mean all it would cost us is a quick trip to the Pokémon centre which we would probably do anyways. There doesn't have to be a deeper reason for these things. Let's just go in and have some fun.

I'm surprised that there's a vote in another language. No really, this is the first time I've seen a vote made in a different language than english. I wonder how this will affect the tally.

It's okay, from what limited knowledge of Spanish I have I was still able to make out that it was the 'run up into the trees' vote.

And yeah, Turtwig is just called 'Turtwig' in Spanish, unlike say in French where it's Tortipousse.

Regarding abilities, Shell Armour prevents crits in-game, though I'm unsure how will be reflected (the nuclear crits of old, newer much milder 50% boost or narrative guided). This ability is basically an extra turn turtwig can battle safely in-game.
Strong Jaw is basically a STAB for dark (Bite and Crunch being the only moves that use it)
Overgrowth is also a conditional boost, to grass moves though it only works if Turtwig is weakened.

I'd honestly take Overgrowth or Shell Armour over Strong jaw since our turtle team isn't direly weak to ghost or psychic. Also we will probably be using better stab moves further on so it loses more use while Shell Armour will always be useful and Overgrowth will remain relevant as grass is an important type for our team.

If we want to gain an ability as broken as Defiant I'd suggest Guts , though Defiant 2x boost is still insane. It is a 50% attack boost (same boost as Strong Jaw but is useful for more than 2 dark moves) but is only activated if the pokemon is affected by status moves which can be cheesyily exploited, but like shell armour it could create some awesome clutches in story.

Feel free to point out any mistakes I made.

Tldr; I'd rather Overgrowth or Shell Armour over Strong Jaw for Turtwig, if we want a really strong ability like piplup's line, I suggest guts. Also Drednaw has both Strong Jaw naturally but also a signature move.

[X] Stay on the defensive, focus on shell withdrawal.

Planning your Path
You had to shake your head, recalling Turtwig back into his PokeBall.

"Oh er, I see," mutters Cynthia "I get your point, two battles in a row should be a lot for a starting trainer, beginner's luck or not".

"Good, the sooner we wrap this up, the better," Rowan said, dusting his hands "So, I trust it you'll be off, unless you'd insist on wasting yet more time?".

"Just a second, Professor" Cynthia then spoke up "I was just curious, why specifically did you ask to meet us at these Ruins? I get Solaceon's a central location, but why not in town?".

"Hah, hosting our little meeting anywhere more public would've simply attracted prying eyes," Rowan scoffed in return, before turning to gaze up at the Solaceon Ruins "I'll admit, old wrecks like these once held a real sense of awe and mystery," he then sighed "But that was then. True, one could say Sinnoh lost most of its mystique after its Gold Rush, and I simply came in when we were down to the last secrets to uncover. But that Oak insists otherwise, hence your PokeDexes".

Cyrus, hardly in the brightest spirits before, then chuckled at this "Professor, are you simply not considering you may be looking in the wrong field? At what already has been invented, as opposed to what could be?"

"Hah, I'd like to see how your tune there changes once you reach my age, young Cyrus" Rowan just chortled at him.

Cynthia then took you aside for a second "Listen, it looks like there's no getting through to that Professor. But hey Evelyn, don't let his words drag you down, Sinnoh's got plenty going these day, I mean we just got our own Pokémon League! And trust me, being from Celestic, I run into unsolved mysteries every other day" she told you.

Cynthia then looked north, back to you presumed her hometown, before she asked you "Oh, that reminds me, you've got a destination in mind, right? Well okay, it's not unlike some Trainers to just go get their Starter without a plan beyond that, but from what I've seen of you, I presume you aren't that type".

"I'll be off northeast, to Veilstone," Cyrus bluntly interjected, seeming to have heard you talking even though he hadn't exactly been invited in to your talk "Or Jubilife maybe, anywhere with more sophisticated technology and computing than what little Sunyshore has to offer".

Trying to ignore him, Cynthia then kept telling you "My hometown's northwest of here if you're interested, just head west then go north up the mountain stairway. There's another path north then west... but that leads through a seriously foggy ascent, so I wouldn't recommend it. Past Celestic is Mt. Coronet and Eterna City, I'm sure an underground prodigy like you would hardly need an introduction to them.
I was actually planning to head south myself, I've been wanting to check out these Lost and Hallowed Towers I've heard about" Cynthia then swerved.

Sinnoh is my favorite region! This quest looks good!

[X] Head to Hearthome City.

The tower would be the most interesting option, I kind of like the irony that the first thing a girl known for going underground would do is climb a tower.
And there is a chance for a Misdreavus
