Tehme stood at the banks for a day considering this and his mission, before he announced, "Blood ochre stains the banks of the lesser river. We carry on up this path. The flooding did not stop entirely, so perhaps only the spirits of this river were angered."
In which direction flowed the tributary Tehme chose, roughly speaking? For that matter, had the river continued more or less consistently southward* prior to this fork, or was there a notable change in overall direction?

*"south" here meaning "to the right when facing the rising sun" if that's necessary to clarify
PS: Tehmingi basically means "Followers of Tehme" here.
Out of curiosity, is there a root language you're using to inspire this culture's naming conventions (like Welsh for the Ymaryn)?

This is my favorite option, it's what brought them here. The memory of the journey and the people met along the way.

I'm not terribly concerned with aiming for a specific civ here, but for those who are I would point out that exploration means we are less likely to get trapped in our own lands and become isolationist. For better or worse, we'll meet new people, see new things, and learn from others.

I think that matters a lot for a new civilization.

They went roughly south the entire time, and the minor branch is to the east.

It's a new world where we are, we'll need to defend ourselves

Minor branch to the east is probably the Blue Nile analogue. So we actually got to not!Uganda? That's a hell of a trek.

EDIT:

We went from downriver of Aswan to somewhere near Kampala. That's half way across Africa.

So, any real-world analogues that make sense here for our location? Figure that our end destination is probably at either a large lake or a mountain range, and if we were headed south the whole time there aren't that many possibilities that match. Maybe if you put the poles in different places there could be a few more? That or we're not on an Earth-analogue at all the way we were for PoC/PoI.

I like the idea of a nomadic people

I'm down for any of these. Hello, world.

Edit: I'm very undecided tbh, I'd love to get started on a more developped material culture too

[X] Legacy of Trade

I want to push for this! Firstly, I've been wanting a trade primary focus in this for a while and well here it is I figure.

At some basic level, the exchange of ideas which happens as people interact and trade with each other has been a major driver of this society since we decided to expand the hunters. I'm interested in that exchange of ideas. The shinies collected from that are also interesting and the people we'd receive them from even more so.

A further point as well is that trading is a major focus of what will occur here in this new land where the Tehmingi are taken in. The trade of seed and cattle, and the blending of peoples and binding of kinship which I think forms a major component of trade.
