The duo glanced back at each other before Keira spoke up.
"I think I'd rather take my chances with the house."
Liam nodded to her, gently kicking his legs against his horse and pulling the reins back to have his horse go towards the house. Keira followed suit, and she held her left hand on her revolver grip. The woman had an uneasy feeling.
"Be ready for anything," She said aloud, making sure Liam could hear her.
He glanced at her, seeing her hand on her gun and nodded.
"Sure t'ing. Never know what's in these old abandoned places, now do we?"
Keira nodded.
As the two made their way down to the house, it was almost a wonder as to how they managed to spot it. It was down a twisting path with several trees in the way. The house itself looked to be two stories tall, with some of the wood paneling having fallen off. There were a few battered and busted windows, and possibly a letter on the door of the house which was dead center of the porch.
The two entered the clearing which the house was in, almost like a circle with some overgrown grass. There was a small creek nearby. They pulled on the reins of their horses and dismounted. Keira grabbed her shotgun from the saddle, raising it to her eye level and pulling back on the pump to make sure if it was loaded or not. Satisfied with the results, she put the pump where it need be and put the gun around her shoulder by the strap.
Liam drew his lever-action rifle, and drew the lever down and back, chambering a round. The two glanced at each other.
"I got the front and you get the back?" Liam questioned.
Keira nodded, drawing her revolver in her left hand. Again, she moved the cylinder out, counting the rounds before nodding to herself and chambering the gun and pulling the hammer back. She made sure to leave her finger outside of the trigger so as to not accidentally misfire.
Liam hunched his shoulders, almost crouching and raised his rifle as he moved towards the front door, taking a quick glance at the note on the door.
"This premise has been repossessed by the bank for. . ."
And that was all that he was interested in the matter. He placed his hand on the doorknob, and the knob fell to the ground.
He muttered to himself before he pushed on the door which creaked open. He raised his rifle, looking to the left and the right before noting the room was clear.
There were stairs to the left, which lead to the upstairs. Some of them were broken. There was a door as well, leading into another room. By the stairs on the right was a hallway. And to his immediate right was another door.
"Anybody in this house, you better pipe up now!" Liam yelled out, making sure that if anyone was there they'd know.
There came a sound from the upstairs, and Liam immediately aimed his rifle at the top of the stairs.
"Who t'e fuck was that!?" He yelled out, starting his way up the stairs.
Liam reached the top of the stairs, eyes, and ears peeled for the source of the commotion. The upstairs was a hallway, with a few rooms on either side and the hallways itself lead to a balcony.
Again there came a sound from in a room, and Liam approached the door. He grabbed the handle and opened it.
There came a bark, and to Liam's surprise, it was just a young little golden retriever on the ground.
Liam smiled, before he asked aloud, "Wait, how t'e fuck did ya's get up he-"
Liam was tackled from behind before he could finish his sentence, dropping his rifle to the ground. Liam managed to roll onto his back and raise his arm to stop an incoming punch from his assailant.
The two tangled on the ground for a moment before Liam grabbed onto his attacker's shirt and slammed his head into his attacker's nose, causing an eruption of blood out of his nose and him to stumble back. Liam got onto his feet and charged the man into the wall, slamming him against it and throwing a punch into his face.
Liam raised his arm again, and the man blocked his punch, lifting his knee hard into Liam's groin. Liam's eyes raised in pain as he stumbled back. Liam was then punched in the gut and took a left hook and a right uppercut from the attacker. The man then grabbed onto Liam's shoulders and put one of his feet behind Liam's, causing him to lose his balance and fall onto the table in the room, causing it to collapse under his weight due to the old table's leg being nearly worthless.
The man then put his knee on Liam's chest and punched him across the face once more before pulling out a knife. Liam's eyes widened as the man went to stab him. Liam managed to get his arms up before the knife was driven into his chest and catch the man's arm.
There came the sound of a shotgun's pump sliding along, and the man on top of Liam felt the barrel of the gun placed against the base of his neck.
"I'd advise you to drop that knife."
Slowly the man moved his right arm out and dropped the knife to the ground.
"Up. Turn around."
The man stood up and went to turn around, only to receive the butt of the shotgun to his forehead. He collapsed, unconscious.
Keira put her shotgun over her right shoulder and offered Liam her right hand, as well as giving him a sly smile.
Liam took her hand. After standing, he gave the man a not so gentle kick to the ribs.
"Thanks, if it weren't for you I might have a knife sticking outta me neck," He acknowledged, and then looked at the man, "T'e fucks a Valentine boy doin' out this far?"
"Those two do have a mighty high price on their heads, you know. Could be running, like we always seem to be."
"We aren't runnin' away, we're just tryin' to find better opportunities," Liam corrects her.
He bends over and picks his hat off of the ground, as well as his gun, before continuing, "Now, were there any ot'er fuckers around here I'm sure they'd have stopped ya's from savin' me life. Only thing I know that's alive ot'er than this bastard is that puppy there."
Keira gave him a sideways look, before approaching the dog and kneeling in front of it. She reached into her satchel and pulled out a piece of venison. She held the venison out to the dog, who approached her nervously.
"Shh, it's okay little fella'," She spoke softly and gently, reminding Liam of a mother.
The dog licked the food in her hand, before nibbling on it and taking it from her. The pup didn't mind when Keira started to scratch it behind the ears. Keira smiled, looking back at Liam.
"Think we found the little ones a new friend?"
Liam, for the first time in a while, saw a genuine smile on Keira's face and couldn't help himself but smile too.
"Aye, but we'll have to come up wit' a name for the pup, and decide what to do with this bastard. I think we tie him up and one of us stays here to watch t'e place," He responded.
Keira nodded, now carefully picking the little puppy off of the ground. Now that the dog knew she was a source of food, it began to lick at her face as it wagged its tail.
"Maybe we found you a dog," Liam chuckled.
