Onmyodo Monogatari (Japanese Heian-era fantasy)

[X]: With a focus on the help i got; both from the carriage, the people rushing to help, and of course from Fudo Myo-o, whose mantra drove the demon away.

[x]: With a focus on how lucky I was, that the carriage thing worked, and that I remembered the Fudo Myo-o mantra right and so on.

Quest Housekeeping
Okay, so, I'll begin working on the update later today, which means we'll update tonight or tomorrow. But before that, I want to ask you a few things.

First, do you want to spend more time 'in the moment' after this - go see if you can find Tomiko, go pray, whatever - or would you rather we go skip further ahead past more childhood stuff? I ask because i don't want to give you options you dont' really care about if you'd just get more training and skip further ahead to 'fun' parts, and i also don't want to just skip over things if you want to slow down and interact with them, obviously.

Second: If someone feels like it, i think now (or after the next few updates) Is probably a good time to write up a review for the review thread? if you want to, that is.

Third, and really the reason i'm making most of this post, I want to encurage you to ask questions of people when questions are open, but i think i've failed to communicate why and how it's a cool thing. As i mentioned earlier, i originally did this quest as a cyoa on SA, where it's just an accepted part of the culture. It's how i'm used to bringing across large amounts of setting information - through the words of the characters. It's difficult to summerize everything kogitsunemaru would reasonably know from his interactions with the culture - from the usual way relationships work to the rituals of childhood and adulthood, to prevelant philosophies to religion to clothing and on and on and on, and it's even harder to do that in a way that's interesting to read. But if you ask questions, all that becomes much more available and easier for me to write up in managable chunks.

Lastly, i want to thank you for participating in my incredibly niche interest here, and for keeping up with it so far - it's really enjoyable, and the downward spiral in numbers i'd expected hasn't happened, which also is the reason why i keep writing updates even on days i'd really much rather just be playing warframe. Also, lurkers, i love you too!

Be careful asking this question, Xander quest on SV has spent 9(?) years and over that time the characters got to age 8. :p
I'm going to trust your best judgement to find the most interesting things for us to do here. As you've said, this is pretty niche so I think trusting someone who knows more about history is better than making a wild guess on my part.

Stupid votes like "how do you blow out the candles on your birthday cake" are a big part of that as well. As long as that kind of thing doesn't happen, and we get at least some summarizing, it should be okay.

I wouldn't mind a bit of an epilogue to the current arc, but for the most part I'm fine with skipping to whenever you think interesting stuff picks up again.

And thank you for writing these updates. It's good content.

Talking about questions, does our father have any idea what exactly the bird thing that attacked us was?

I'm cool with whatever the writer thinks would make the adventure better if being a teenager would help with that time skip but if there's more fun and crazy during childhood I wouldn't want to miss anything

The world and lore are fascinating, and your writing is great so even if I'm not familiar with the time period and culture, it's still a blast to read.

Childhood is the foundation for personality, but you don't have enough freedom to truly do what you want. So I'd be happier with snippets from now until when he's considered adult rather than week by week roleplay.

Perhaps choose time periods or lessons you think would contribute greatly to his skills and personality and play through those, perhaps with votes for the timeskip.

However, like I said, the world, and your writing is going to keep me here even if you decide to do it all differently than I'd prefer.

I mean, doing snippets is basicly what i'm doing, it's why i chose 'your first love poem' as the first time to slow down, really. (though in retrospect, i should've slowed down for the first demon interaction way back when). I'm not doing week by week roleplay, no way. The question was more if you want this particular snippet to have an update or two more.

An excellent question! I was planning to open up questions after the next update for that sort of thing, but i'll be sure to include that one in it.

Also quick question is it possible to do something nice for the spirits that helped us? Like offering them things or an upgrade for the carriage

While I'm enjoying the childhood sequence I think ideal would be playing through maybe 3 personality and relationship defining events(counting this poetry arc as one) before moving on.
God knows we'd be perfectly happy to just play day by day for the rest of known history and get nothing done.

Personally, I'm fine with taking a slow pace through the protagonist's childhood. I'd like to see a little more of the aftermath like interracting with Tomiko in person before timeskipping. As for timeskipping itself, if you do decide to do it then maybe a short fast forward as a test run, maybe half a year or year at most. There's still plenty of interesting storylines to explore like Tsuzura. There's also the Empress and her ladies that Kogitsunemaru was allowed to meet because of his young age that I found interesting. I like exploring details like that, and I feel like there's a lot of his surroundings that we can still experience or develop before aging him.

The Fifteenth
You tell your father what happened, and take special care to shift the glory to the carriage-sprit and Fudō Myō-ō, both of whom you thank expressly. Your father asks you some further questions - he gets you to describe what you remember of the creature in detail, as well as its actions and movement, and you oblige.

"I'm very proud of you," he tells you. "While is am… less than happy that you gave away the protection I gave you, protecting Tomiko-chan was noble, and keeping your head together enough to perform the Fudō Myō-ō mantra required great bravery."
You blush at the praise and smile - it is a rare thing for you, and very high praise indeed.

"One last question, then," he continues "Do you know where the carriage is?"
Uh.
"What?" you reply.
"It seems it has… run off, after the encounter. It drove Tomiko-chan back to the palace, and then it simply… left. "
You blink once or twice.
"No, I don't know where the carriage is," you reply. "Can't you find it?"
Your father nods.
"Oh, easily, but there's no reason to use magic if I could simply ask," he replies, then straightens himself up a little bit.
"Seiryo," he says, with… emphasis. Behind him, something flickers, and you focus on your second sight. A man fades into being, flying just above the ground. A.. spirit? "Go and track down the demon. If you can, find out where it came from." The spirit nods, and disappears.

"Do you know what the creature was?" you ask him. He furrows his brows. "I am… uncertain. A demon of some sort, clearly; divinations will reveal more. Currently, I fear that it is a shikigami." Shikigami, as you well know, are spirits conjured or bound by onmyoji for specific tasks.

Questions are open with your father.

After your conversation with your father, you have a few days before your education resumes, which you get to spend with yourself and with your friends. During that time, you have several things you could do, if you wanted.

Most importantly, what, if anything do you want to do with Tomiko?
[ ]: Write more poetry! I spend the time I can with her, writing poetry and enjoying her company
[ ]: Write some more poetry, but not spend all my time with her - that might well be seen as rude or inappropriate.
[ ]: I just give her a little bit more attention than before; I don't want things to get too weird between me, Tomiko, and the others.
[ ]: I blow her off. The only time she was with me, she got attacked by demons! My family has enemies, dangerous ones, and I don't want to put her in danger. What if the demon was after me?
[ ]: Something else! Write in!

Do you want to make any particular sacrifices to Fudo Myo-o? There's no real expectation that you do so; as you understand it, it is not that he has helped you specifically, but that you have been able to call upon the force of his wrath and power. That's not to say that there is no reason to thank him, it was, in a real way, his power that saved you.

[ ]: Yes! I go to the temple and make the best offering I can.
[ ]: Yes; I go to the temple and light incense and say a prayer of thanks.
[ ]: Yes; I make the best offering I can at the small family shrine.
[ ]: Yes; I light incense and say a small prayer of thanks at the small family shrine.
[ ]: No, I don't do anything special.

Do you want to do anything about the carriage?
[ ]: I ask my father to tell me when it's been found, so I can light incense in front of it as a small offering.
[ ]: I ask my father to let me help in finding it.
[ ]: I ask Jun-dono to take me where it was kept, and light incense there.
[ ]: No, I don't do anything
[ ]: Something else! Write in

Do you want to do anything else?
[ ]: Yes! Write in.

But who could have known we'd be out then...:o just Tomiko... and everyone we asked for poetry assistance... and everyone those gossips told.
We're surrounded by traitors, no one can be trusted.:V

Not too rare, it seems, as this passage repeats the one from the last week almost word for word.
"Son. I am incredibly proud of what you did. Tomiko tells us that you awoke the spirit of the cart, and managed to drive the demon away with a mantra." His brow furrows. "And though i am less pleased that you put yourself in danger by giving away the talisman, I am still proud that you would protect others."
You nod, blushing. It is fairly rare for your father, or anyone, to praise you like that.
