On the Shoulder of Martyrs (Black Templars 40K Quest)

[X] Theobald against the champion.

We're breaking apart as a squad taking too many losses while outnumbered, so I feel we need to break the enemy as fast as possible with the champion seeming the best opportunity to do so to make at least the cultists consider retreating.

Also if Theobald dies our odds at getting wiped out grow massively.

[X] Theobald against the champion

We need to kill the Blood Champion to drive everyone off. Nimrod can take a solo witch. A Khorne champion is nothing to joke about.

Brothers leave the cultist chaff for others, Brother Theobald needs our aid. Shower the tyrant in holy bolter fire.

I'm very glad I found this by chance, @ManInACandyVan. I'm sure I've commented this before, but you're really, really good at conveying the ... the contrast of an inhuman mind like that of an Astartes in comparison to a mortal. Heck, pretty much everything I've seen you do with regard to 40k stuff really sells the ... your writing feels dark but also real. It's a good feeling, makes me want to read more of it.

With that said, vote time!
[X] Theobald against the champion.

We have a few fights we're in danger of losing - neophytes vs cultists is a relatively easy stomp, most they're gonna do is waste time for our squadmates, which is a thing to take note of. But they'll be fine.

Initiates versus berserkers ... in all honesty, they're probably gonna take heavy casualties and I'm okay with that. Maybe our asshole mentor will die and we'll get someone actually invested in teaching us. Optimal outcome here (for me) is a mutual kill, initiates mostly die but the berserkers are hopefully halted.

Nimrod's a Blank, and a fairly potent one judging by how antisocial his personality is and how he's already got a history of ganking psykers. Dude'll be fine versus one chaos witch.

Theobald versus the champion though? First rule of fighting chaos and/or Orks, you always kill the leader first chance you get. Not that we'll make much of a difference to the fight beyond hopefully distracting the champion and not dying long enough for Theobald to exploit this, but the Champion is smart - he's fighting with legit skill instead of just bloodlusting. If he dies, the cohesion of the rest of the force goes with him and we can mop the other forces up more easily.

Also if this dude kills Theobald we're kinda fucked in regards to even hurting him so yeah

Actually, I'm pretty sure Blanks cannot become Space Marines. That's due to the Gene-Seed possessing a psychic component, which don't work on Blanks.

Problem is that the Witch is right in the middle of a cultist mob.
Even if Nimrod can gank her alone he needs someone to have his back against the other foes.

Going out alone into a cultist mob gets people killed.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Blanks cannot become Space Marines. That's due to the Gene-Seed possessing a psychic component, which don't work on Blanks.
He meets all the requirements - weird, sullen and borderline robotic in personality, everyone hates him, the apothecaries are looking into him, and it's been mentioned that psychic powers don't work on him. Besides, QMs have room to headcanon if they want, and even if ManInACandyVan isn't having classic Blanks be able to be space marines, the Black Templars of all chapters would be the ones to have psykers with 'DENY THE WITCH' powers manifesting.

[X] Reynauld and the initiates against the berserkers.

Alternatively, this is an opportunity to put aside our differences. We're all working for the same Emperor, after all. Time to be the bigger Astartes? :V

I could see Reynauld just surviving with massive losses and finding out we could have stepped in to help, but instead to him it would look like we chose to try and 'steal' glory for ourselves in going after the Champion or Witch. I'm sure that would do wonders for our relationship and reputation.

[x] Nimrod against the witch.

Shoot The Mage First Is a thing for a reason. We get that out of the way, we can do whatever is needed.
And Nimrod is the closest thing an Astartes can have to a friend to us.

Don't you know? There are no Psykers among Black Templars. They take "hate the witch" very seriously.
