The World in 1204

The year is 1204, and the world is a crucible of conflict and change

Step into the shoes of King John of England, a ruler beset by treachery and misfortune, his once-proud empire crumbling beneath the weight of his failures. Feel the anguish of a man betrayed by his own nobles, stripped of his ancestral lands in France. Will you succumb to despair, or will you rally your strength and fight to reclaim your birthright. Or perhaps you shall choose to be Philip of France, the great rival of the English kings, a monarch at the zenith of his power. Bask in the triumph of outlasting that villain Richard the Lionheart and bringing his successor to his knees. But remember, the same hand that raises you up may also cast you down.

In the lands of Iberia, where the clash of faiths and cultures reaches a fevered pitch, you may assume the roles of the Christian kings. Navigate the shifting alliances and enmities of a divided land, as the looming shadow of the Almohads threatens to engulf all in its wake. Will you put aside your differences and unite against the common foe, or will you fall prey to the same rivalries that have long plagued this land?

In the Holy Roman Empire, where the throne lies divided and the princes scheme and plot, you may take up the cause of the young boy king Frederick Hohenstaufen, presumptive Emperor, or his rivals, Otto of Brunswick and Philip of Swabia, capable and fearsome captains of men, acclaimed Emperors. Forge your path through the labyrinth of imperial politics, align yourself with the great houses of Germany and Italy, and strive to claim the crown that is rightfully yours.

Meanwhile, in the once-mighty Byzantine Empire, a great reckoning is at hand. The Latin Crusaders have seized Constantinople, the jewel of the East, and now seek to divide the spoils of their conquest. The Latin Empire is born, a new power rising from the ashes of the old. But the Byzantines will not go quietly into the night. In Nicaea, Trebizond, and Epirus, the last scions of the imperial dynasty gather their strength, determined to reclaim their lost birthright. And to the north, the Bulgarians press forward, eager to seize their share of the crumbling empire.

In the Caucasus, the kingdom of Georgia under Queen Tamar reaches the zenith of its power. Fresh from victories against the Seljuk Turks, the Georgians now set their sights on the lands of Armenia and beyond, determined to carve out a vast empire that will dominate the region for generations to come. In the lands of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, defeat has spawned a bitter civil war that now rages between Kaykhusraw and Kilij Arslan. Kaykhusraw, returns to claim the throne his brother stole from him, while Kilij Arslan, the son of the usurper, fights to maintain his tenuous grip on power.

In Persia, the Shah of Khwarazm, Alā' al-Din Muhammad, fresh from his victories against the Ghurids, looks to rebuild his realm and reassert his dominance. And in the Levant, the Crusader states cling to their tenuous existence, as the Ayyubid sultan Al-Adil seeks to consolidate his rule and the Abbasid Caliph Al-Nasir dreams of throwing off the yoke of the Khwarazm. Far away, in the steppes of Asia, a young chieftain named Temujin begins to forge the disparate Mongol tribes into a force that will one day shake the world to its foundations.

Rules and Mechanics
RULES & MECHANICS

THE RULES
1. The GM's word is final.

2. Appeals will only be accepted via PM, not within the OOC thread.

3. This game will only be using the Forum, a Discord will exist purely for OOC chat and Art, all QTE's will happen in the Forum.

4. Players MUST understand that the focus of the game is the 1200s and they must look to maintain plausible action of a character set in that world.

5. OOC discussion is permitted but any official planning is forbidden without the GM present; this includes diplomacy. Diplomacy must be done within the RP Thread if 'negotiating' with the final agreement if any or outcome being presented in the IC Thread.

6. All births and deaths are dealt with by the GM. If a player does not request rolls on children or deaths, OTL deaths and births will be invoked unless IG reasons have prohibited this. Such as, a king who died in war OTL, will not perish at the same time if ATL his realm did not enter war IG or likewise, if a certain king who sired a daughter OTL perishes beforehand, obviously the daughter will not be born ATL.

7. The GM reserves the right to lock countries for a period of time or permanently, such as locking the Papacy to a GM controlled state.

8. Plagues, natural disaster and famines will occur as OTL unless player actions are deemed such that they would induce these issues. For an example, if a player institutes a drastic land reform whereby mass numbers of urban peoples are relocated to the rural areas and skilled farmers are marginalized, the result will be possibly a great famine and large scale death and with this, the decline and possible collapse of the ruling regime.

9. Players may place other player's characters under arrest when they are in their domains. This may not be done retroactively (ie, posted after a character has departed) and there is a chance of failure depending on the circumstances. Arrested characters may be executed or handed over to another's physical control (RP control remains in the hand of their "Guiding Spirit").

10. Each player controls the ruling monarch and those loyal to him - directing all aspects of them in war and peace - diplomacy, finances, war, and marriages. HOWEVER, they don't control those loyal to the state and not personally loyal to them, these and the disloyal as well as the general public of his country are NOT in his control but under the GM. Loyalties CAN be swayed by player actions, as well as the shifting circumstances of the time and place.
The GM reserves the right to dictate on loyalty of subjects and military personnel.

FINALEMENT -
Turn length will be announced at the start of each turn.

THE MECHANICS

During this game there will be special EVENTS and QUICK TIME EVENTS taking place.

EVENTS - These are posts made by the GM in between Turn Reports based on NPC reactions to player behavior during the Turns. These can range from lords swearing to take the Cross alongside your character at a tournament, to perhaps an attempted murder by an angry father after you renounced your Betrothal to his daughter... coughPhilip!!!!cough or perhaps the dispute of an inheritance ruling

QUICK TIME EVENTS - These are INTERACTIVE moments in the Game. Matters such as a clash between armies (I have in the past done indepth 'Kriegspiel gaming' for these that is not the case in this game), to perhaps a sudden death and reactions to it at a wedding you're attending and so on. These will have an IMMEDIATE Post alerting of their creation inside our IC Game Thread, however there will be specific new Threads made based on the QTE, at the end of the QTE, the events will be summarised as an EVENT post or in the Turn Report.

Armies... & Money... Two very important things, things which frankly the medieval setting we're in doesn't allow for systems that can express just how 'wild' these two elements can be depending on the region...

Players - sadly you will not know how large your armies are - you will however know how large your personal retinues are - your armies in wars will depend on mustering of them (which will factor the cause, the support of your vassals and the power you hold over them). You can supplement with 'Mercenaries, Military Orders and Miltia' but all of those come with consequences. (Mercenaries are expensive and destablising oftentimes, Military Orders come with religious influence that can overshadow your own powers, Militia are poorly equipped and their defeat leads to devastation of your lands by the loss of its people if a severe defeat is handed to you)

Meanwhile on MONEY - Players do not need to worry - I will discuss on a case by case basis the cost of actions and whether you have the RESOURCES to pull it off. You can of course take action to gain MORE of the elements needed to pull off your actions.

FINALLY

There is no limit on ORDERS - only a limit on TOTAL WORD COUNT. No matter how many ORDERS you make - you have a total of 500 words. You could have 10 ORDERS with 50 words for each, or 5 with 100. That's all you have. The moment you run over that limit, I stop reading.

Also - keep in mind - if your character is a martial genius - he's likely not an administrative one... you should look to populate your court so that you can appoint persons to lead 'ORDERS' that you create.

1) Vladimir Polotsky (Woldemaro de Ploceke) of Polotsk
The canon that I am going to stick to, because there is almost no information in the English wiki, and in other sources it is contradictory.

1. The son of the previous Polotsk prince Volodar Glebovich.
2. Sister Sophia was married to the King of Denmark Valdemar, as well as the Landgrave of Thuringia Ludwig III, died in 1198.
3. In 1191, he met in Velikiye Luki with the Novgorod prince Yaroslav Vladimirovich and agreed on a joint campaign against the Lithuanians or the Chud.
4. In 1192, Vladimir alone went to Lithuania, and the Novgorodians and Pskovians to the Chud.
5. In the winter of 1198-1199, the Lithuanians and Polotsk people attacked the Novgorod fortress of Velikiye Luki, burned it and plundered the surrounding area. In response, a large army of Novgorodians, Pskovians, Ladoga people, and Novotorzhians went to Polotsk. The Polotsk people, in order to prevent the devastation of their lands, sent ambassadors who met this army near Lake Kasplya, having appeased the Novgorod prince with gifts and money.
6. In 1201, when Lithuania went against the Semigallians, Vladimir invaded Lithuania and forced the Lithuanians to return to their borders.
7. In 1203, Prince Vladimir invaded Livonia. Probably, his army consisted of his own squad and the squads of princes Vsevolod Gersiksky and Vyachko Kukeinossky. They captured the castle of Ixkül for a short time and forced the local Livs to resume paying the annual tribute to Polotsk. However, at the Golm fortress the Polotsk people suffered a defeat: the German knights wounded many of the Polotsk people's horses with their bows, which is why they did not risk crossing the Dvina under fire and retreated. But Vsevolod Gersiksky and the Lithuanians attacked Riga and plundered the outskirts of Riga.
2) Roman Mstislavich the Great of Galicia-Volyn Principality
