[X] You're a horrible liar, a good teacher, and a great friend.

"Well..." You begin, leaning against the tree and looking up at the night sky.

"You're a good teacher by the sound of things, a great friend...."

"Link I..." Came Sheik's soft voice from the other side of the tree, followed by a gasp as she realized something.

"And an absolutely terrible liar,' You say with a grin.

Sheik rushes out in front of you frantically waving her arms as she tried desperately to think of some way to salvage the situation "N-No no no no, I-I meant Zelda, not me! I... I mean I'm really touched you would say such nice things about me but-"

She pauses, before glaring at you. "HEY! What do you mean I'm a terrible liar?!"

You give her a flat look.

Her anger melts into nervousness "I-I mean w-why w-would you think I ever lied to you?"

Your expression doesn't change.

"Come on, I-I don't have anything to hide!"

Still keeping the same expression.

"STOP! STOP GIVING ME THAT LOOK!"

You don't.

"LINK WHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!?"

You are uncompromising.

Sheik slumps forward, utterly defeated.

"F-fine.... I... I'll properly introduce myself. You.... you deserve that much."

Sheik stands up straight, closing her eyes and bringing up a hand to her chest. Her braid seemed to come undone, golden hair flowing in the gentle night breeze, looking like it was made of starlight in the gentle glow of the moon even though you knew it was covered in dust from the road and she hadn't had time to fix her braid. Her eyes opened, glowing rubies set into flawlessly carved marble. A commanding presence settled on her, one that naturally drew the eye regardless of anything else around her. The change in demeanor was so sudden, so immediate, that suddenly you didn't feel like you were standing in front of your dorky friend. Suddenly, a small part of your brain thought that maybe there was a merit to those beliefs people had...

"I am Princess Zelda Saria Ilia Hyrule, Chosen of the Goddesses and sole heir to the throne of Hyrule." She says, spoken so softly it was barely above a whisper yet her voice carried with all the power of a mighty river.

"And a complete dork." You helpfully aid.

The illusion breaks, Zelda puffing out her cheeks as they turn crimson. "I- I AM NOT A DORK!!" She shouts, stamping her feet.

You shrug, "Fine, just a terrible liar then."

She grabs you by your tunic and starts shaking you, shouting. "STOP SAYING I'M A TERRIBLE LIAR! I-IMPA SAID I'M A GOOD ACTRESS! IT... YOU MUST HAVE RECOGNIZED ME FROM WHEN YOU LIVED IN THE CASTLE!!"

"Or you blurted out your name when we first met."

She freezes, staring up at you with wide eyes as you grin.

++++
"I'm sorry okay!" You say to the bundle of misery that was currently smacking her forehead against the tree bark repeatedly.

She doesn't stop.

"I mean the accent was what tipped me off at first..."

"They said I had a great fake accent..." Came the emotionless response, the headbutting pausing for a moment then resuming.

"But hey! No one else noticed you only took the last syllable for Sheikah off your fake name!"

"I thought you didn't notice. I thought it was brilliant and fooled everybody," Zelda again said without a hint of emotion, before resuming hitting her head against the tree.

Desperate you rack your brain for something to help, before you snap your fingers. You got it!

"Well, no one other than me figured it out! See, only your friends know you well enough-"

"The Yiga assassin figured it out from me just talking to him once."

.......

"Uh well.... at least this is proof you're nothing like how those people in there view you as!!" You add with a nervous laugh.

The headbutting picks up pace.

You are really bad at this.

"A-are you going to continue doing that all night?"

"Yes."

Well, this will go nowhere fast.

With all other options extinguished you think back to your childhood, and how you handled your friend you barely remember from back then. Hmm... yes, yes that will work.

You sneak up behind Zelda and poke her in her unwounded side, right between her ribs.

"HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-?!" She shrieks, before she whirls around and jams two fingers into your ribs.

"GAAAH!!"

"W-WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT!?" She yells, holding her side, her ears beet red.

"To get your attention- Ow ow ow, why would you use both hands?!"

"IT WAS REFLEXES YOU JERK!"

Reflexes nothing, the only other person who did that was... hmmm....

"Well, it got you to stop feeling so down, didn't it?" You ask, a cocky grin sitting comfortably on your face.

She stops glaring at you, blinking. Then a faint smile touched her scarred lips. "Yeah... I guess it kinda did. Heh..."

She sighs, sitting down next to the tree, her back leaning against it. You follow suit, sitting beside her.

"So..." She begins.

"So." You answer back.

"You have a ton of questions for me, don't you?" Zelda asks, looking over to you.

"Well..."

She shakes her head, a small grin on her face. "No, it's alright. Feel free to ask. It'll be nice to talk openly with a friend for once."

[X] How are you holding up so far?

"I dunno..." Zelda mutters, bringing her legs up to her chin and wrapping her arms around them, "Partly relieved, in a strange way."

"Hmmm?"

She leans back, resting her head against the tree, "I've been told for years if people found out who I was I'd be in grave danger and when I finally left it proved..."

You wince, the Yiga assassin was the worse kind of confirmation.

She sighs, before shaking her head with a chuckle, "But now I guess I'm just happy I actually can talk to someone as well... me. Even in the village I... yeah."

She looks over at you, smiling, "So... thank you, Link."

You rub the back of your neck, feeling a bit embarrassed.

"Well..." You begin before you notice she was holding her head in her hands.

"Aaaaagh! I still feel like a complete idiot though!"

Haha...

[X] So I guess you're the girl I used to know when I lived at the Castle with my father?

That gets her attention, Zelda's head snapping up and looking over at you, "Wha-"

"I uh... used to be friends with a girl when I lived in the castle," You try to explain, "I don't really remember but your mannerisms and everything are well..."

Zelda looks confused for a moment before she seems to recall something, "Yeah... YEAH! I remember being friends with a boy! I kinda... beat him up a lot. I mean we really roughed around as kids aha ha ha!"

At least put some effort into it...

Her brow creases as she tries to recall "Ugh if only I could remember. Could you believe the chances of that? It'd be like something out of Shrine Looter or.. I mean out of a story!"

"Yeah, why do we have such a hard time recalling this?" You ponder, rubbing your chin.

You both go silent as you consider it before the realization strikes you both like a bolt of lightning!

"Oh right!" You exclaim, bringing your fist down into your palm.

"We were both horribly traumatized as children," Zelda answers, imitating your movements.

[X] How did you survive what happened?

"So..." You begin, and Zelda lets out a long sigh, hanging her head.

"I can guess what you're going to ask me, and the truth is I don't know."

"Don't know?"

She shakes her head, "I... just woke up on a horse with the castle in the distance, Impa holding on so I don't fall off."

She rests her forehead against her knees, speaking so quietly you had to lean in to hear her.

"We were both covered in so much blood, and no matter how much I asked she refused to tell me what happened. We rode day and night through the wilds... I don't know how the horse took so long to collapse, the poor thing."

[X] Ask about her time with the Shiekah?
[X] Impa's the one who raised you, right?
[X] What have you been doing all these years?

"Then what happened?" You quietly ask, and Sheik curls up even more.

"I... don't recall. I don't recall coming to the village, or when I learned what had happened. Just... periods of lucidity, with Paya near me. The elders said I was praying every day to the goddess for those who had perished, yet how Paya and Impa described it..."

She shivers slightly, "Acting...scenes out, laughing or crying for no reason, saying or doing such disturbing things, not sleeping or eating. I'm glad that I don't recall much of it."

"Paya... stayed by my side through all of it. I fear I may have hurt her, but if she did not I may have never become myself again." Zelda says, a small smile forming.

"She introduced me to all the books the village had, to archery and history. Oh, how I fell in love with it, shooting at targets until my arms would not bend anymore..." She sighs at the fond memories, closing her eyes as she recalled happier times.

You nod, finding something she loved doing after what she went through must have been a big help.

"Who took you in?" You ask, and she snaps out of her daydreaming looking a bit embarrassed.

"Ah! Well, it was Impa. Paya's parents are always out of the village and since Impa is Aunt Purah's younger sister she took her in as well." Zelda explains, straightening up. "Impa is only a few years older than me and with her duties, it was quite hard on her. I truly admire her for how she was able to handle it."

"Duties?"

Zelda nods. "She's the guardian of our village. All the warriors report to her, and it is she who acts as the voice of the elders when they are not available. I guess she would be considered the leader of the Sheikah."

"I guess you and Paya were on your own for quite a bit then." You observe, to which Zelda nods again.

"Well, yes. But we could take care of ourselves and were quite busy. Paya would follow the rituals of the Sheikah, while I would study and cross-reference the ancient texts with more modern documents. Archaeology from the bedroom."

"You were quite a team."

Zelda grins from ear to ear. "Yep! We were unstoppable! We discovered so many things about our ancestors, and it all paid off with the discovery of the Sheikah Slate, sealed in one of the villages sacred artifacts!"

"So when did you become a teacher during all this?" You ask, folding your arms across your chest.

"Ah well, two years ago." She responds, scratching her chin. "The children were just getting old enough to learn to read and write but were left on their own for most of the day. So one day I just said to myself "Zelda, these children will grow up not learning how to read or write if something isn't done!" So I gathered them all up, cleaned my chalkboard off and started my first lesson. Every class just followed that format from there. Paya... well she doesn't do well with being the center of attention, so I mostly did it on my own."

You raise an eyebrow. "So no lesson plan, no schedule, you just start teaching them whatever?"

"I call it adaptive teaching." Zelda says with pride, chest puffed out and hands on her hips, "It's pretty innovative, isn't it?" She looks over at you, expecting praise.

"Yeah..." You say, not meeting her eyes. Still, she was the only one who bothered to teach the children.

[X] How did you leave the village? Wouldn't think the Sheikah would be keen to let you wander off.

"I snuck out during the night! All that training finally paid off!" She says cheerfully.

"No one stopped you?"

"Paya..." Zelda begins, fiddling with the hem of her shirt. "Paya helped me, she made sure a horse was ready and no one was watching. She even convinced me to go when I faltered..."

"She sounds like she really believes in you." You observe, leaning against the tree and looking up at the night sky. You kinda want to meet this Paya.

You glance over to Zelda only to see her curl up tightly, arms around her legs. "I... I fear she may have been punished for aiding my flight," She says, voice filled with worry and fear.

"Did anyone see you?" You ask, concerned.

Zelda looks up slightly, remembering something,"Impa... I saw Impa watching from a rooftop. But she... just let me go. She was even smiling. I think... I think she might have believed it was best for me."

"Well, if Impa let you go I doubt they would have treated Paya too harshly," You say, hoping it reassures her.

[X] So, any plans for the future? Like, what you want out of life?
[X] The ruins you research, are you looking for anything specific?

"So... what's the plan for the future? After you're healed?"

She sits up straight, looking at you with an expression of pure determination, "Find more shrines, discover what this Nexus is and then give the information to Paya!" She says, pumping her fists, "With her expertise, she'll decipher every mystery we learn, and the village will finally appreciate what a wonderfully talented person she is!"

You nod in agreement, "Alright, then let's find this Nexus!"

Zelda smiles broadly and nods, "Thank you, Link."

"There's uh... one thing I got to ask though."

[X] What actually gets you about what those people were saying?

Zelda's expression sours, and she curls back up into a ball.

"Sorry, if you don't want to talk about it..." You begin, but she shakes her head.

"No... no, I should explain. I guess I just... hate how everyone treats me as perfect."

"Huh?"

She sighs, "Everyday people greet me with "Your majesty," or "Your highness," or "Princess", every day they ask what the goddesses have told me, every problem they turn to me for advice even when they're the experts. They tell me I need to be more faithful, less bookish, that everything I do to help is not worth anything!" Her voice was beginning to rise, and you can't help but wonder if she had been bottling up her feelings for a long while.

"Yet then they tell me I'm going to save Hyrule, I will return to the throne and banish the empire and monsters. That people are ready to die or kill for me. That everything is dependent on me, that it is only through my prayers that crops grow or the empire doesn't find the village. In the same breath they reject everything I do, say I shouldn't teach or play games, they praise my commitment. Praise my piety and kindness! I can at the same time do no wrong and yet do everything wrong!"

She grabs her head, clutching at her golden hair, her voice taking on a manic edge "I... I don't even know if my own judgment is sound anymore and Paya... Oh Paya...."

A sob escapes from her throat, tears beginning to fall "Everyone always says 'why aren't you more like Zelda? Why are you not helping Zelda? Why do you encourage Zelda to neglect her duties? Why are you such a bad influence on Zelda? Stop drawing Zelda into your own duties!' Everything gets put on her!"

She gestures at the Stable, "And outside the village? Here I am some deified saint! Yet in the same breath I am some disfigured, moralless, corrupting woman as though my gender is somehow the issue."

She goes silent for a moment, and you put a hand on her shoulder, causing her to jump and turn to you. "Zelda?" You ask, voice filled with concern.

She turns away, wiping her eyes and pulling out a handkerchief to blow her nose, "S-sorry. I-I was just worried how they'll treat you when we return. But... I realize you would not let it get to you."

You grin a bit, "You want me to give them a talking too?"

She laughs, "Haha, s-sorry that image. I... I'm fine now Link. Thank you. Though I guess I should tell you something..."

[X] Chosen of the goddesses?

"I am... well, chosen by the goddesses." She explains, before scratching her head at your complete non-reaction, "Yeah, I guess that doesn't explain much. Well... I can hear spirits connected to them."

"So like... hearing Korok's running around or something?" You ask, and she giggles.

"Sorta. I... guess it's really more of a feeling. Occasionally I feel directed by the spirits and gods or can feel their presence on holy places. It's rather hard to explain actually..." She says, holding a hand up to her chin, "If anything this explanation makes it seem like I am schizophrenic."

She nods to herself, apparently figuring out the best way to explain it, "Here, let's use an actual example. When I was small my mother and father took me to one of the sacred places devoted to the old gods. The spring of power to be precise. I snuck off, and before I knew it I found myself at the springs shore, lost and scared," She smiles as she recalls, inclining her head slightly, "I thought... I heard a voice calling out to me. Telling me that I didn't need to be afraid, that everything would be alright. It only frightened me more, and I wailed. But then... I felt someone else afraid, terrified of the stranger before them. My heart leaped to them, I wanted to tell them that I would protect them from the scary voice."

She shakes her head, giggling to herself "I don't know how I didn't realize I hadn't said a word to them, but they emerged, a Fairy. It was so beautiful, and I was mesmerized. I cupped it in my hands, telling her that I would keep her safe. Then another fairy appeared, then another and another until they were swarming around me like festival lights. They danced around me in such dizzying ways that I couldn't help but join in, laughing, dancing and singing. The spring water itself was glowing and before I knew it I was in the middle of the spring, dancing on its surface like it was solid."

"Mother found me then," Zelda says, her smile becoming sad, "She rushed out to hold me, throwing me up in the air and laughing. I don't think she even noticed the faeries or that she was walking on water, she just spun me around in her arms, overjoyed to have found me. Then father and our retinue arrived and the fairies scattered, vanishing completely. Mother and I both plunged into the water, laughing and splashing at each other. From that day on, I guess, I always could feel similar presences."

You lean back against the tree, pondering what she had told you.

"That water-walking ability would be super useful." You finally say.

"I KNOW RIGHT?!" Zelda exclaims, "Sadly, I was never able to replicate it."

Wait... you just remembered fishing someone out of the castle pond, repeatedly.

Some things don't change...

[X] You do realise that you will have to tell Ganondorf who you are now right?

Zelda groans, "Do I? I mean, I am a Sheikah. Oh it'd be just like Volume three of Shrine Looter when they had to keep the secret knowledge of the sacred stones from their traveling companion who didn't know their true value! Though... Ganondorf did meet me as a child-" She pauses, staring forward with wides eyes before she lets out a roar of frustration and falls to the side, hands over her face. "He recognized me. He recognized me this entire time!! My disguise didn't work from the beginning! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!"

[X] Call it a night.

The two of you head back to the stable in better spirits than you left it, though both pretty exhausted.

Arriving, however, you notice a few of the groups nursing minor injuries. The old man had a rather nasty looking welt on his forehead.

Ganondorf was fine, in fact, he was standing by your beds looking bemused at the situation.

He waves you over when he see's the two of you, and both you and Zelda quickly make your way over.

"Uh, what happened here?" Zelda asks, glancing around.

"The disturbance got settled. But that isn't important, you two are standing awfully close together..." He says, bringing his hand to his chin.

Zelda eeps and puts a bit of distance from you as you just rub the back of your head, "We just had a talk, learned a bit about each other..."

"You told her she didn't fool either of us with that amateur act?"

Zelda slumps forward, hanging her head, "Why did you have to say it like that..."

Ganondorf chuckles, shaking his head, "Don't be too hard on yourself, running into both Link and I couldn't have been predicted. Have to admire your commitment though, you kept up that act rather than spilling it the moment you were around people you trusted. You've got good instincts."

Zelda looks up, eyes wide and hopeful at the unexpected praise.

Ganondorf stroked his beard, smirking, "None of those who wish you harm would expect you to have grown into a demure scholar or knew you as the adventurous child you were. Be yourself from now on, that will be your best disguise."

Zelda looks away, eyes downcast and hand to her chest, unsure of how to respond to someone finally telling her to just be herself. Then her brow furrowed as she realized something. "Wait... Demure?!? I am not-"

Ganondorf cuts her off with a bark of laughter, before the laugh turns into a yawn, "Anyways, I'm going to hit the hay."

You nod. Honestly, you just wanted to finally get an opportunity to sleep in after days on the road.

Zelda just grumbles under her breath about not being shy.

++++
"A good shot, but remember with armour you have no room for error. Any plate worth its salt is enchanted, even a millimeter off will cause the arrow to bounce off," Ganondorf observed, arms crossed over his broad chest.

You nod, nocking another arrow as you sight the target. It was just a normal target that Ganondorf painted thin lines on, the three of you commandeering one of the spare ones lying around. Three being just you, as Ganondorf preferred to rush into melee and Zelda... well...

You glance over to her majesty, sitting on a crate hunched over, clutching her gut and looking rather green. She looked absolutely miserable, even her pointed ears were drooping. There were other's watching as well, a few travelers and children of the Stable owners. One man even had a basket of apples, of which he was eating from. This man had soot-covered fingers and reeked of powder, and seemed to be watching Ganondorf's lesson with an amused look.

Focusing back on the target hold the bow up, draw the string back and then release. There was a whoosh of air and then a thunk as the arrow sinks halfway into the target, perfectly aligned with the thin line painted on.

The stable children clap when they see your perfectly aimed shot, and you give a small bow before retrieving the broadhead. Sure the target was stationary but knowing where to aim could make all the difference in the world.

"Nice shot," The man says, holding an apple up. You nod and he tosses it at you, which you easily catch, "But if you had a musket you wouldn't need any of this fancy shootin, just point and watch the Lizalfos go flyin back."

"That's if you can hit it. And if it's a fire-breath Lizalfos, then you'll just be bite-sized chunks for it when your powder ignites," Ganondorf observes.

The man gives a crooked grin, "Well that's just half the fun, ain't it? Look you can keep drawing your bows, but there ain't nothing prettier than that loud crack of a musket firing."

Well, you have to admit a musket does pack far more punch with non-enchanted bows. Sure, you're an excellent shot and very strong but a musket could be used by anyone and didn't take nearly as much physical exertion. It was inaccurate though, and that powder meant you were one spark away from being a walking bomb.

"Bow," A very regal voice demands from behind you, and you turn to see a stone-faced Zelda standing with her arm outstretched, only the slight clenching of her jaw indicating she was experiencing any discomfort.

Ah... didn't she say archery was one of her favorite hobbies?

Without a word you hand over the bow and your quiver, which she throws over her shoulder. Nocking an arrow Zelda holds up the bow, drawing the string back as she glares at the target with such intensity you wouldn't be surprised if it burst into flames. Muscles you doubted anyone expected a Princess to have strained as she put the bow to its limit, and then she released the string.

The arrow found its mark perfectly, embedding itself all the way to its fletching, before another hit, and then another and another, each arrow coming so quickly you weren't entirely certain the arrows had even hit before they were fired. Glancing over to Zelda you saw that she was a blur of movement, nocking arrows and drawing the bow with speed you wouldn't have expected from the girl. A savage grin was on her face as each target soon sprouted an arrow.

"O-Okay, I get your point..." The man said and Zelda paused to glance over to the man, her grin widening. The man seemed to shiver noticeably whether from the grin or the way it stretched her ruined flesh you couldn't tell, but even you felt a chill run down your spine. The children though just clapped and cheered.

Then Zelda returned to firing, emptying your quiver faster than you could at your best. It took a moment for you to even notice that a few of the arrows even had leaves that had fluttered by impaled on them.

"Okay okay, Sheik we get it..." You say, rubbing the back of your neck awkwardly,

Zelda kept firing.

"Sheik? Sheik!"

The children stopped cheering, looking a bit concerned.

The last arrow embedded itself in the target, and she holds out a hand to you, "Knife." She says, without any room to debate.

You wordlessly hand it to her by the handle, and she gives it a slight toss to spin it around and catch it by the blade. Then she hurls it at the target, sending it between two arrow shafts without touching either and burying it past the handle.

Zelda looks over to you, a look of pure smug self-satisfaction on her face. You vaguely note that your mouth was hanging open and you close it with a 'click' as her grin widens and she takes a bite out of an apple. Your apple. She took it while you were stunned!

She takes another bite as you glare at her, looking very pleased with herself as she chewed.

Ganondorf sighs, shaking his head, "Alright, nice showing Sheik. Now go pull them out."

Zelda pauses mid-bite, looking back at the target. A low whine escapes her as she sags, slumping forward as her arms fall to her sides.

You try and fail not to laugh.
++++
The next day Zelda was just as miserable and had opted to stay in bed rather than move. When she finally emerged to get something to eat you had noticed she had changed out of her traveling clothes into a simple sleeved dress. An apron hung over her front, fastened around the waist by a cloth girdle. A shawl was draped over her shoulders, and she wore a headscarf over her hair, her long blonde hair trailing behind her in a braid. The scarf she wore to cover her ruined flesh was hanging loosely around her neck. She hadn't bothered to put on her boots, instead opting to go barefoot.

You'd say she looked the perfect picture of a peasant girl, except the noble air with which she carried herself clashed horribly with her modest dress. Neither you nor Ganondorf commented on her change of clothes, and she didn't bring them up. She did get a disgusted look from some of the older men as she ate though, who scurried off when you gave them a threatening glare. Zelda herself simply sat and ate, the only indication she had noticed was the clenching of her fist and her glaring at her pottage.

At this rate you wondered if she'd punch the next person who brought it up.

You had sold the amber earlier, bringing your funds up to a nice 1000 rupees. You'll need every Rupee when you get to castle town.

The rest of the day was spent preparing to leave early the next morning, to get some good distance before traffic bogs you down. It had been years since you had ever been near Castle town, and you didn't quite believe Ganondorf when he said the roads would be packed.
++++
Oh Goddesses you had been wrong.

You were still a few days ride from Castle Town yet the roads were packed with travelers and merchants. Patrols also picked up, until you couldn't spit without hitting a soldiers boots.

Half-way through the day, your group joined up with a merchant's caravan, Ganondorf being the far more social of your little group immediately engaged them in conversation and soon stories were being bandied about, along with raucous laughter.

Zelda was sitting side-saddle, still wearing her dress though she had put on her boots. The woman in the caravan cast her sympathetic looks, and soon offered drink and food to her. The sympathetic looks turned to winces and horrified gasps when Zelda had to remove her scarf to drink, however, and Zelda over the course of the day drifted over to you, preferring your silence to the veiled questions about her injuries.

You alternated your time between instructing Zelda on how to more comfortably ride her horse and watching the soldiers with a wary eye. A few glanced towards Zelda, though with her face covered no one paid her much attention for long. Her injuries would likely attract some attention but hopefully, their extent would keep people far enough away that they recognize her from the paintings of her scattered around Hyrule.

You wonder though, that painting barely looked like her. Anything that could be considered part of her Sheikah ancestry was downplayed or removed entirely. Was it just because the model used was probably Hylian? Or was it because... hmmm, well you only saw the one painting. It probably was an isolated case.

You're still thinking about it when you finally bed down, comparing the princess you'd seen in that chapel to the one laying just a few meters away...
++++
The next day things almost turn disastrous. You'd passed from hills and forest into the great expanse known as Hyrule field. It was the breadbasket of Hyrule, producing enough food that even a drought could not hope to put a dent into Hyrule's great stores of food. Grains of every type surrounded you on all sides, broken only by groups of trees and the occasional hamlet. The roads turned from dirt to stone, carefully maintained and even with drainage ditches lining the sides. More and more people seemed to fill the roads, all moving too and from the heart of Hyrule.

Banners hung from posts made some strange material, all depicting the Rose of the Empire. When you asked Zelda about what they were she said they were made of Luminous Stone.

"It looks like it's based off the Zora designs. The Zora use Luminous Stone extensively in all their architecture due to their aquatic domain being a poor place for lighting fires. You must give the empire credit, this probably not only saves a fortune on patrols and fuel but also greatly reduces the environmental costs of gathering it," She says, examining the posts as you pass them, "It must have taken a truly staggering amount of Luminous stone though..."

"Aye, good ol' Imperial hospitality. With these posts, we don't have to worry about Bokoblin's or Lizalfos sneaking up to slit our throats," A merchant chimes in, and you concede that it probably did a lot to help those who traveled these roads at night.

As the sun sets and your group beds down for the night, the posts glowing with that blue light you get a good look at the other side of Imperial hospitality.

A group of soldiers, wearing the imperial rose so proudly on their chest approached the merchants, demanding payment of a new tax. They eyed the wine, rupees and woman of the group, so distracted with greed and lust they didn't notice half the group stand up, hands on weapons. These uniformed thugs had made the miscalculation of targeting a caravan that had to trek through Hyrule's wilds, constantly under threat from monsters and Stal's, and only had it dawn on them when Ganondorf walked up to them, looming tall with the faint glow from the lampposts casting ominous shadows over him, asking when this new tax had been implemented. The soldier's eyes drifted to the massive swords at his sides and realized their mistake, looking nervously to the armed men and woman around them.

They quickly disappeared into the night, and you all returned to your bedrolls with harsh looks and muttered curses. Zelda seemed particularly incensed, a quiet fury emanating from her as she set her bow down.

'The real Princess Zelda did not weep when she saw actual moral decay,' you thought to yourself as you said goodnight to her.
++++
The third day passed in better spirits, as you passed more and more homes the closer you neared Castle Town. You even managed to stop at a few village wells for a drink of fresh cold water. You still managed to have a fair amount of food left, a couple days of travel at least if you rationed. Zelda was also feeling better, the worst over for her.

Castle Town was in the distance, its massive towering walls visible along with the smoke of dozens of chimnies. Above it all though, clearly visible was Hyrule Castle, possibly the largest building in all of Hyrule. Some considered it a city all of its own, it's blue roofs and white walls making it a shining beacon visible from miles around. Even though you knew it had seen tragedy and evil the castle was still awe-inspiring and a source of hope for all the denizens of Hyrule, that maybe one day a rightful ruler will once again hold court from it.

You look over to Zelda, whose crimson eyes were fixed on it, teeth visibly grinding behind her melted lips.

"You going to be okay?" You ask the princess, concern clear.

Zelda closes her eyes, taking a deep breath before letting it out in one big exhale. When she opens her eyes again she looks so... tired, but she still manages to give you a faint smile.

"I'll be fine Link, we're only going to be there for a couple days anyways. Thank you for your concern though."

You both go to sleep with the smells of the city reaching you from even this far away....
++++

You reach Castle Town's massive gates the following morning. You, who had lived most his life in the woods or the castle itself, could only stare in awe at the sheer scale surrounding you. The Walls were massive, bustling with soldiers, cannons and imperial banners, each wall as thick as a large house and towering over all of them. The walls itself were structured like a star, with shorter walls radiating out to more earthen construction. It even had a ditch wrapping around it filled with water, carved out long ago by master Goron architects. Surrounding the city walls were small cottages, spreading out and slowly thinning as it met the endless fields of grain.

You think of what you knew of the city, and recall just how much the city had grown over the years. The Sacred grounds had become a park sequestered behind the walls, consumed by the inevitable growth of the city. You think even with a census no one was truly sure how many people called it home. Even the Imperial capital, far from here, paled in comparison to it. It was no surprise that there was talk the Emperor would move the capital here, Hyrule castle being far more impressive than his own.

"Unfortunately, this is where we must part. I wish you luck in Lanayru. I truly hope we'll meet again soon!" Ganondorf calls to you over the din, and you all give your goodbyes.

Ganondorf luckily before he departed gave you directions and advice for the city. It was comprehensive enough that you felt you could navigate the city even with your inexperience with crowds.

The first obvious decision you had to make was what inn you would be staying at. Ganondorf recommended two, and you were quite surprised at the stark differnce between the two of them.

The first inn was in the poorer district. A rough place, that saw more than its fair share of violence. The food was awful, the beds were unclean, you have to pay extra for food, Zelda stuck out like a sore thumb and Ganondorf half suspected the innkeeper had criminal ties with how often someone tried to nick his stuff. But it was cheap. At 20 Rupees for two beds a night, it was what you paid for.

The second inn was in the far richer part of town, and Ganondorf didn't offer any explanation on why there wasn't a middle option other than they shouldn't bother searching which wasn't reassuring. Zelda was instantly for this, for reasons that were quite embarrassing.

"You reek like a dead animal," She rather bluntly informs you. "If we go there you're taking a bath right away."

"I do not stink!" You say indignantly, before quickly sneaking a sniff when Zelda pinches the bridge of her nose and shakes her head. Unfortunately, your gagging ends up revealing what you did, and Zelda's laughter makes the tips of your ears burn.

This inn featured actual plumbing, a free meal, and actual beds for only a hundred rupees a night. Well, Ganondorf said beds so you were certain he meant multiple beds and you and Zelda wouldn't have to share. Zelda unlike you would actually fit in there, and as Ganondorf said to both of your embarrassment no one would really question it if you came up with the excuse you were a couple. It seems the empire had encouraged more... traditional views in their time occupying Hyrule, and an unmarried man and woman sharing a room aroused suspicion and inquiry from far too many parties.

So where will you stay?

[X] Rich inn - 100 Rupees a night

"I am going to kill him," Zelda states with calm certainty, a stark contrast to her burning ears and flushed cheeks, "I am going to fill him with so many arrows they will have to roll him into his grave."

"Aha, don't you think that's a little extreme...?" You say as you walk towards your room, stifling your own embarrassment.

"No. He planned this! He planned this from the start! Making us do something so embarrassing... The nerve!" She says through gritted teeth.

"So uh... if it's so embarrassing why are you still holding onto my arm?" You ask Zelda, who was clinging to said limb rather tightly. It was actually kinda awkward, you'd never done this before.

"Because if I let go I'm going to curl into a ball and wish I could die."

"Ah."

The two of you finally get to your room, unlocking it with the key the innkeeper gave you. The room you enter was well furnished, with nice rugs, dressers and cabinets, a table and a few chairs. The single large bed was soft and clean, not a hint of straw and the window pointed out towards the street. Zelda detaches herself and makes a move for the bed, before looking down at the state of her dusty clothes and thinks better of it. Instead, she collapses into a chair and lays her head down on the table, her arms covering it.

You honestly didn't blame her, Ganondorf was not kidding when he said they'd be concerned about your and Zelda's relationship with each other. Immediately they started asking questions about how long the two of you had been a couple or looking at Zelda's hand. You quickly lied, saying the two of you had been engaged and married by your parents but had lost everything thanks to a Bokoblin raid, Sheik sustaining horrific burns. You'd sold what you could for medicine and supplies then traveled to castle town in the hopes of becoming bards to make enough to settle down, as well as find someone who could heal Sheik's burns.

Zelda to her credit sold the lie, pulling down her scarf to reveal her necrotic flesh and muttering quietly "We... we lost everything."

You did your best to ignore how she glanced at the castle then.

Unfortunately, this did mean you'll have to buy musical instruments as they had asked to hear what you're capable of. You only hope that Zelda was actually a decent singer or decent with the lyre, as neither of you actually wanted your lie exposed. Still, it was rupees you could have used for armour and weapons, this lie you had been caught in might end up costing you a lot.

You wonder if things would have been easier if the two of you just simply bought seperate rooms rather than following Ganondorf's advice. You really didn't look forward to the awkwardness of figuring out what to do with the sole bed in the room. But that could wait, it had taken you all day to find this inn while navigating the unfamiliar streets, the two of you stopping to take in every sight. Castle Town was absolutely bustling, countless people wandering around the packed streets. Yet... there seemed to be a clear divide here, a wealth gap you hadn't anticipated. More than a few Hylians gave the two of you in your dusty clothes odd looks when you were wandering around the richer part of town, Zelda happily pointing out that the style of buildings that dominated the city had lasted since ancient times.

The sun had not set yet and while the markets would most likely be closed it still was not the time for dinner. You supposed the two of you could hang around the inn, listen in on the local news and ask for directions around castle town. You had some information from Ganondorf but his info was not up to date. He certainly didn't know where to find a shop that sold musical instruments. You'll probably go ask-

"Hey, you're heading to take a bath now, right?" Zelda asks, peeking from between her arms.

"No, I was going to find a table. I mean we just got here..." You say, remembering she had said you needed to take one.

"Go take a bath, and get your clothes washed as well. We aren't leaving the impression we're filthy savages," Zelda tells you, and you get the impression you didn't have room to argue.

"Fine fine..." You say, setting down your pack and digging into it for spare and all your dirty clothes and then loading them into a basket set beside the door.

You exit the room, heading down the stairs with your basket of clothes in your hand to the common room. It was a large space, with several tables and a small stage. A roaring fire kept the place pleasantly warm but unlike the tavern you were used to this place lacked the cramped, smokey atmosphere. The tables all had table cloths on them, the tables were set out in an orderly fashion and the bar wasn't stained with alcohol and other substances. There were no stuffed heads, mounted shields or anything of like, only decorative tapestries, small portraits of the innkeeper and his family and looming over everyone a portrait of the emperor himself. It was a place that looked like it prided itself on being respectable, rather than being a home away from home.

It was mostly empty, save for the staff and a few merchants discussing their business over meals. Unsure of where to go you wave one of the serving girls, an older woman whose hair was starting to grey, over.

"Excuse me, when we paid for the room the innkeeper mentioned shower and laundry services?" You ask, unsure if it was considered polite to ask about it.

The serving girl nods, "Of course, we have showers in the back. The water is heated and pumped in from the local pumping station rather than more expensive enchanted systems so we have set times for showers and laundry. You're just in time though, the washerwoman will be making their rounds soon and the company this establishment hires is very well reputed. Just write your name on the ticket and set your basket out and tomorrow morning all your clothing will be good as new!"

The woman then claps a hand to her cheek "Ah, but your wife doesn't know about this either, does she? Don't worry, I'll take your basket up to her when you go to the showers. You do have a clean change of clothes, right?"

You nod, feeling kinda awkward about all this.

"Ah good good," Her expression then turns serious, "Now I know you're both a young and in love but this here is a respectable establishment, not like those bathhouses. The showers are separated, no mixing of any sort!"

You nod, cheeks burning at the insinuation and the serving girl leads you into the back, where there was indeed two doors separating what you assume were changing areas. The serving girl explains she'll be taking your basket of clothes in ten minutes, roughly when the water starts being pumped in and she expects you to be in the showers by then as once again she says this is a respectable establishment.

Then she leaves you, and you enter the men's changing room feeling awkward and embarrassed. It was a small room with shelves lined up one the walls. The walls had baskets with numbers on them, in each basket were clean, fluffy towels. You end up standing there for a minute, mulling over what the woman said. Why did she even keep mentioning that kind of thing? You weren't even sure what "those" bathhouses even were! You couldn't imagine anything more awkward!

Well maybe not that awkward, you'd already seen Zelda-

Slamming both palms into your cheeks to get that plea- image out of your head and reminding yourself of how hurt she was you quickly undress, take the towels from a basket while putting your clean clothes in it and feeling quite exposed head into the shower room. It wasn't much, just a small tiled room with a window at the far end with luminous stone lamps set into the ceiling. One wall was covered in nozzles, knobs and a glass indicator that was slowly filling with water while the other had bars you assume you hang your towel on. A bench ran through the middle of the room, on it was a variety of soaps and brushes you assume you were free to use.

Feeling glad no one else was going to use this at this time you stand there rather aware of how drafty the room was until the indicator was full. Then grabbing some soap and a brush you step over and turn the tap.

Instantly any sense of embarrassment vanished. You don't know how long you stood there, enjoying the feel of hot water on your skin. All you knew was that you were well and truly drenched before you started washing yourself. You kinda wished this place had a bath you could soak in but as someone whose only baths were diving into a river to catch fish with his bare hands, this was heaven. Years of grime washed away as you scrubbed, and you felt the aches and pains of the road melt away with the heat.

You did manage to sting your eyes a little when you washed your hair, which temporarily blinded you and made it impossible to properly distinguish the room. You even thought you saw a shadow at the window, but it vanished when you turned to look at it.

Probably a bird...

++++
You return to your room clean, refreshed and carrying a tray of food and beer. Meat and rice with a side of vegetables, you'd even snagged some cutlery. Luckily it wasn't frowned upon to eat in your room, only that you left the food tray outside. When you enter you see Zelda sitting in the corner, curled up with her hands over her mouth with her ears completely red. She doesn't turn to look at you or even acknowledges your presence.

"Uh, hey? You okay? I got-"

"I AM FINE!!" Was the very high pitched response as she suddenly goes ramrod straight, her hands shooting to her sides.

"Ooookay? I got food."

"THANK YOU!"

You set the food down, taking a seat and grabbing a fork to begin digging into the meal. You pause though when you see Zelda hadn't moved. "You... going to eat?"

"Y-YES!" Zelda says, shooting up and walking over to the table, taking a seat with an odd stiffness. She then immediately grabs her food and starts wolfing it down, refusing to make eye contact with you. She was also completely beat red, though you suspected it was from choking as she quickly ends up grabbing her throat before reaching for a tankard and draining it in a few seconds.

You hadn't even started, simply staring at Zelda with a raised eyebrow and mouth slightly agape.

"Are you sure you're alright?" You ask, concerned.

"Ahaha I'm fine! I'm fine!" Zelda laughs, still refusing to look you in the eye. "I'mjustgoingtotakethebathImeanshowernowbye"

And just like that she grabs the laundry basket, her clean change of clothes and vanishes out the door.

Well... that was strange.

Eating your meal in silence your thoughts drift from topic to topic. Eventually, however, they settle on the portrait of the emperor and what had disturbed you about it. This was a man who ordered Zelda's family butchered, conquered Hyrule and upended so many lives. Yet he looked so... normal.

An older man with a receding, gray hairline. Sharp features, blue-grey eyes, and a trimmed beard wearing black, unadorned armour. You were used to monsters looking disturbing, obviously evil yet this man looked like any other.

You didn't like looking at that portrait, and you didn't wish to see Zelda's expression whenever her eyes fell on the face of the man who ordered her family murdered.

But you could take solace in one thing though.

You'll stand against anything he sends to harm her...
++++
It took a while for Zelda to return, her voluminous golden hair still damp. She was wearing only a simple gray dress, which reflected the mood on her face.

"Uuugh it was packed," She groans, before flopping onto the bed.

"Long line?" You ask, and she groans again.

"I had to stand there freezing waiting for my turn while everyone gawked at my scars," Zelda explains into the bed sheets.

"All those people... that must have been really uncomfortable," You say, glad you were the only one there when you went.

"Eh? Not really, sorta like the hot springs back home," She says, looking up from the bed, "Everyone staring was the worst part,"

You lean back in your chair, pondering that. "Hot springs? That sounds nice..."

"Muuuch better than the lukewarm water here, and the mineral waters are actually very beneficial for your health," Zelda said with a content sigh "Why Paya and I did extensive studies on it, though I, unfortunately, haven't transferred my notes to the Sheikah Slate."

You smirk, "And that wasn't just the two making excuses to bathe in a hot spring regularly?"

"Well, maybe a little."

She giggles, and you can't help but chuckle as well. You both fall quiet after a minute though, the Moblin in the room becoming more and more apparent.

"Sooo, I'll take the floor then," You state, getting up from your chair.

"W-wait! Must you really sleep on the floor? Isn't it supposed to be cold tonight?" Zelda asks, a blush creeping into her cheeks.

You shrug, "It'll be fine. These rugs are way more comfortable than our bedrolls. Just pass me a pillow."

She reluctantly hands it over, before suddenly saying "You don't have to do this just because I'm... you know. Take the bed, I'll sleep on the floor."

You just lay down on the floor, setting the pillow under your head, "It's fine, I'm not going to make you sleep on a hard floor with your injuries, you'll be half-crippled tomorrow."

"But-"

"Goodnight Sheik."

She sighs, before getting up to blow out the candles. The room falls into pitch darkness until suddenly a faint blue light illuminates the room along with the sound of tapping.

Doing your best to ignore it and the temperature rapidly dropping causing you to shiver you close your eyes and drift off to sleep...
++++

You awaken the next day to Zelda hissing in pain. She was sitting on the bed, clutching her side. You push yourself up, ready to ask her if she needs the tea when you notice a blanket fall off you.

She'd... covered you in the night as the temperature dropped.

You look back up at Zelda who looks away from you as you do so, her ears turning pink.

You shake your head, smiling. This girl...

Climbing to your feet you stretch, letting your limbs wake up. A knock on the door draws both your attentions and Zelda gets up to answer it. She opens it and after quickly thanking the person at the door returns with a basket of clean clothes.

She picks up and hands you your tunic, and you're amazed at how clean it is, a floral scent drifting off it. You could get used to this kind of stuff.

You lay the tunic out on the bed as Zelda starts sorting through all your clothing-

Wait...

Why are all the pillows on the ground and not on the bed?

"Ahem! SO! What's our plan for today Link?" Zelda suddenly asks, her face red.

...

You sigh, you honestly hadn't given it much thought. You only planned to stay here one more night, so you could only really get something done today and tomorrow before you left Castle Town for Lanayru.

You could visit Castle Town market today or tomorrow, but you weren't sure how long you'd need to stay there to buy everything you need. You don't know if you'll have time tomorrow.

You could visit the academy for information, Ganondorf told you the library was open to the public. Sadly Zelda wouldn't be able to go there, to much risk of someone recognizing if not her than her Sheikah ancestry.

You could search for that black market lead he also mentioned, but you'd never done that before and if the guards catch you...

You could visit local mercenary companies and adventurer hang-outs. They might have information on monsters you'll be encountering.

You could visit the local garrison, the public can watch them drill and you might learn a thing or two if you ever need to fight them.

You could just go sight seeing, Zelda did mention she wants to see how Castle Town has changed these last eight years.

You could also visit the Sacred Grounds, Zelda also mentioned she wanted to see it. She did promise to avoid doing anything spiritual there that'd give away her identity.

You could go to a restaurant, just the two of you. Eating together. Like a-

ANYWAYS there was also theaters you could catch a play or opera-

....

Okay you needed to decide fast before this lie really messes up your perception of things.

Where do you go? Choose one.

[X] Castle Town market

You both make the decision to get all your shopping done today since you want to leave before it gets dark tomorrow. You also don't want to hold off on that musical show you're supposed to do and raise suspicions. With everything settled you step out of the room to let Zelda get changed. When she's finished Zelda heads downstairs while you quickly get dressed.

Clad in the clothes Zelda bought for you and meeting up with Zelda at the front entrance the two of you make your way to Hyrule Castle Town Market.

It was easy enough to find, as all the traffic in the city seemed to direct the two of you there. Uncomfortably, it also seemed to draw you closer to the castle, the great structure dominating the skyline. You almost felt a feeling of... apprehension as you drew nearer, the castle itself electing feelings of foreboding in you despite its benign exterior.

But whatever you were feeling was nothing compared to Zelda, who clung to your arm as you approached the market. While she might have said she was simply doing it to not get separated in the crowds if you asked neither of you drew attention to it, both your gazes always fixed on the castle, the buildings on each side of the street looming over you like the closing jaws of some great beast.

Eventually, however, the claustrophobic streets empties out into a massive square. It was positively filled with market stalls, with far more wealthy shops filling the buildings surrounding the square. Musicians could be heard faintly over the din as people talked and merchants hawked their wares. In the center of it all was the fountain, the most recognizable feature of Castle Town Market and what you will use to orient yourself. When the crowd eventually pushed you towards it however you had to do a double-take. Gone was the symbol of the royal family, replaced by a massive statue of a man in armor holding up a sword. An effigy to William the Just's vanity, you presume.

Your arm smarts a bit as Zelda tightens her grip, her eyes locked on the statue and the castle looming behind it with not anger, no defiance but just... the look of someone unable to grasp what she was seeing. Like a child trying to understand some horrible event taking place in front of them, beaten for a reason they don't understand.

It's one of the most painful things you've ever seen.

You pull Zelda away from it, toward the stall selling musical instruments. She seems to snap out of her fugue, loosening her grip on your arm. She even points out the Lyre she wanted, picking it up and plucking a few strings experimentally. She smiles faintly at the sound and plucks away at a few more strings as she closes her eyes, losing herself to a rhythm you don't know. Only the shopkeeper asking that she pay for it snaps her out of it. Luckily it and the pan flute together only cost 100 Rupees, and the two of you once more enter the sea of people surrounding you.

At that point, it becomes hard to even see where you need to go, and the two of you end up walking a complete circuit several times just to get an idea of where you were.

"Goddess," Zelda mutters behind you, "I saw this place all the time from my window but I never imagined it'd be like this. How does this not turn into a riot?"

Yeah, as someone who spent a good portion of your life alone in the woods you were starting to become really uncomfortable. It was honestly hard to breathe, and you felt like you could collapse any moment. You were almost leaning on Zelda now, though she seemed to think you were just being pushed by the crowd.

You needed to shop, now. No more lollygagging. Subtracting tonight's room cost you have 700 Rupees to spend. You notice a lot of two-handed weapons on sale. If you buy one you'll have to decide whether you'll pack away your bow to use it, as you can only carry 1 type of two handed weapon at a time. Do you switch your bow out for say a claymore or do you keep it? Polearms luckily could be kept on your horse and drawn in a moments notice while riding for mounted combat. As for armour, some of it could be worn over your clothes, though you could only choose to wear either a brigandine or a cuirass. You also didn't want to replace your cap with a helmet just yet.

Zelda if you buy armour for her obviously prefers light gear that won't make noise, which narrows out every armour that uses metal. On the bright side, for weapons, you can trade your rusty sword in for a new sword. It wasn't selling it, rather exchanging it for a discount since the metal was still good. You could probably get 50 Rupees off your next purchase at the weapon blacksmith, and 20 Rupees for exchanging your shield for another. Sadly your bows don't count for the same, you'll have to sell it and you aren't allowed to do that since you lack a merchant's license.

Elixirs don't come with a bottle if you buy any, so you'll only be able to afford as many as you have bottles. You also have to remember you have limited space to carry stuff. You might only be able to fit a couple bombs into your saddle bags if that since you have food, medicine and clothing concerns and you were already pretty well packed unless you hitched your horses to a wagon.

All in all, you were very limited on space and you'll need to choose carefully. You also already have 10 Chuchu Jelly, 10 restless crickets, a decent amount of Broadhead arrows, 1 Bokoblin gut, a handful of horns and teeth, 2 Traveler's bows, 1 Rusty Broadsword, 1 wooden shield and 7 bottles.

Carrying your purchases back to the inn proved to be quite the difficult task, even with you strapping your new sword and shield to your back. Getting jostled by the crowd nearly caused both of you to send your items and new armour flying. But you managed it, and the two of trudged your way through the entranceway of the inn where one of the serving girls were waiting for you.

"Oh welcome back! I see you have your instruments and... armour?" She asks, eying your packages.

Zelda laughs, not even her scars preventing her smile from being truly radiant, "Ahahaha, you know how dangerous the roads are! Now we'll just be going up to our room-"

"Aren't you going to play?"

"Oh of course! Just let us put all these packages away~"

The woman smiles, warmed by how this peasant girl held herself and the kind aura she practically radiated. She was probably thinking that even the rich clientele didn't carry themselves with the nobility that this scarred girl did, the grace with which she moved or the commanding presence of her voice. As the two of you headed up the stairs perhaps she thought, even if she didn't grasp the truth of the situation, had the princess lived to become a young woman perhaps she would resemble that elegant, virtuous girl.

You shook your head as you hear the woman mutters a quiet "tut tut" and walk away, dismissing that thought from her mind. You weren't sure if it was an unconscious reaction or Zelda simply falling back on old lessons but how she could just... stumble into being the very image people had in their minds of who the Princess was is something that always sent your mind whirling. She resented it, pretending to be something she wasn't and the Zelda you knew, even from faded childhood memories, didn't line up with that legend of her. Yet when she does, when she seems to embody that myth.... Wasn't there a point of commonality between it all?

As you close the door behind you, Zelda answers that question when she turns to you with an expression of utter panic "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAA-!"

Ah, so that's it, "You forgot we promised to do that, didn't you?" You ask with a flat expression on your face.

"What are we going to do?!" She practically chokes out, "What song would we even play?!"

You open your mouth to reply, then close it when you realize you have no answer.

Hrmm...

Zelda's expression turns to pure horror as she drops her purchases thankfully on the bed. She starts frantically pacing back and forth, hands clasped over her mouth. You set your bundle of purchases onto the table a little less unceremoniously and let her think, as you really didn't have an answer for her.

Then she suddenly whirls on you, a desperate look in her eyes, "Do you know the ballad of the goddess?"

Your eyebrow meets your hairline, "Uh, yeah? It's a children's song-"

Zelda doesn't answer you, as she frantically unwraps her lyre and holds it up proudly, "We have our song! Let's go Link!"

You raise your hand to object but she steams past you, unceremoniously shoving your pan flute into your hand and dragging you out the door by your arm.

Leading you down the stairs and into the common room Zelda seeks out the serving girl, who rather surprised at how quickly you had apparently prepared directs you to the stage. A thick pit of dread settles in your stomach when you notice that the common room while not full still had a fair amount of people in it. Before your old panflute rotted away you did occasionally entertain the village when you snowed in but that was among people you knew for years, who only had what the elders would occasionally bring out. Never have you performed amongst total strangers, alongside someone who you've never seen play before and in the city where they probably heard professional musicians play.

This is going to end in disaster, you just know it. Yet you can see the innkeeper mouthing "go on" to Zelda, who seemed emboldened by their faith in her even if you could see her hands were trembling. Eyes were falling on you now, voices whispering in shock at the scarred girl standing on the stage.

"What happened to her?!"

"Is this some pity thing?"

"That poor thing..."

"Ugh, some disfigured beggar is on the stage. This establishment can not possibly choose good entertainment."

"Who's that boy with her?"

"I think I saw them together, her husband?"

"Hrmph, fool is wasting his time with that one. She's ruined herself."

"Hush vile man, oh they look adorable together."

"Must be performing for food, poor things."

"She must have been quite the catch for that young man before those burns..."

"I'm sure she thought the same of the boy!"

"They're both kinda short honestly..."

"A cute couple or not, I'm not having my evening ruined by peasants. Look at those instruments!"

"They do look rather cheap..."

Wel, this was encouraging. Swallowing down your nervousness you bring your panflute to your lips as Zelda holds her Lyre steady, giving the strings a few experimental plucks as she prepares herself. Then by some unspoken signal, you begin...

When Zelda finally finishes, crimson eyes opening to regard the crowd you could see a hint of sadness that no one clapped, a flush of cheeks as she thought she must have made a fool of herself. She didn't notice you had stopped playing half-way through, mouth hanging open. She didn't notice at first that every eye was on her until cups slipped from numb fingers. When realization dawned on her that she was holding the room's attention Zelda held her new Lyre close to herself, eyes nervously glancing between the frozen crowd,

"Uuuhmm... S-sorry this is my first-time p-playing for strangers. I-I.... I'll... um..."

Yet no one spoke up, every eye unwaveringly placed on her.

Music and magic had always been considered related. It was said that the most powerful magics known to Hyrule, the power to control time and space itself, was taught to the Hylians as songs. The ballad of the goddess was an old song, as old as history. Perhaps those with a connection to the old gods could draw out some hidden power, something that could enrapture the heart even if you didn't know if the singer indeed had any skill. For when Zelda played on that Lyre, when her voice rang clear and true across the inn no one could be really sure if it was natural.

Zelda herself seemed to change while playing, just as she had before your eyes when she announced her name. She drew the eye as if a beacon, her hair almost shimmering in the flickering candlelight. The joy she felt in her heart as she played that song clear with every syllable she sang. The scars on her flesh did nothing to mar who she was in your eyes, as her voice could be heard throughout the inn, inspiring awe in whoever heard it. Perhaps you were simply imagining it though, Zelda's appearance at least as no others seemed as transfixed as you were on her, as they seemed fixed on the music.

It was probably because you realized how much it must have meant to her, that must be it. Anyone friend you cared for would bewi- keep you focused on them if they felt as much happiness as she did when she played.

But sadly, a terrible realization dawned on you as you realized just how she sang that song, and you practically grab Zelda and swiftly escort her off the stage and up the stairs to your room. Zelda was stiff, in shock and when you finally shove her through the door deflates like an Octo balloon.

"They... hated it..." She mutters, sounding on the verge of tears.

You freeze, temporarily lost for words. "...How did you get that- Nevermind, Zelda you sang it in OLD HYLIAN!!"

Zelda blinks, "Huh? Oh um... I just thought that version sounded better. W-wait, is that the reason-?!"

You wave your hands. "Nonono, Zelda. Focus, who're the only people who would know old Hylian?!"

She ponders it for a few moments, "Obviously people who take the time to learn it of course, it is a very difficult language to master with our modern tongues. But come now Link, truly you wouldn't be surprised that someone who holds herself as a scholar would not know ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh now I get it."

Zelda sets her Lyre down on the table and then stiffly sits down on the bed. She grabs on of the pillows and then without missing a beat shoves it against her face and begins to scream into it. When she finally lets go to take a breath she looks right at you with panicked tears in her eyes, "Link I'm so sorry. I messed up, I messed up bad. Oh Hylia Oh goddesses what am I going to do. I've ruined everything! You're in danger and they're going to come after and they'll find us and then they'll do hurt you and it's all my fault it's all my fault-"

"Zelda, Zelda breathe it's okay. Just... breathe and you're starting to go blue," You observe as the girl continues to fire off a stream of worries while wringing her hands. Suddenly she does pause to take a breath before looking up at you, a desperate glint in her eyes.

"H-Hey, it's a really rare language though right?! What are the chances anyone would know it right?! And if everyone hates it then no one would just think I shouted jibberish!"

You think for a moment on that, it was true you only knew about it because you had a royal tutor and they could only teach you from old books located deep within Hyrule Castle's library. Several century-old books that took permission from the King in order to take out.

But there was one wrong conclusion Zelda had drawn, "Uh, they didn't ha-"

A knock at the door nearly causes the two of you to jump out of your skins. You both glance at the door, both happy it was relatively sound proof.

Zelda gets up, straightens her dress and then walks to the door, opening it a crack. Voices come through, it sounded like the entire inn's staff was standing outside.

"Deary, are you alright?"

"Y-yes, I um... " Zelda replies, nervously swallowing.

"Haha, stage fright at your first successful performance! It's alright dear, we won't force you to go out again!" The innkeeper laughs.

"Oh to think you spoke Faron, why you are a remarkable young lass!!"

You could visibly see the gears jam in Zelda's head at the woman's comment. "...Faron," She repeats slowly.

"Yes! The professor told us, he said he recognized it immediately! The language of the Faron tribes! My, I always said we needed to bring a splash of multiculturism to our inn!"

"Yes, my mother was from the Faron tribes! She um... met my father who was a traveler before they settled down. They were both quite old, so when... I'm sorry..." Zelda says as she chokes up, only you realizing it was from her being so nervous she was supporting herself on the door to prevent herself from fainting.

"Aaaah, that explains- Well, you two get some rest! Oh, I know you two will have quite the successful career ahead of you. And to think it starts at this inn! Ohohoho~!"

The staff says their goodbyes and Zelda shuts the door with a click, locking it. She leans against it, head resting against the doorframe.

"They bought the lie," Zelda whispers, crimson eyes wide, "They think I'm from Faron."

"And they loved it," You say, a grin beginning to split your face.

Zelda turns to you, eyes like dinner plates. Then she jumps, letting out a very un-princess like woop.

"YES YES YES! AHAHAHAHA!" She cries out, jumping up and down for joy.

You pump a fist, yeah! Things turned out great! Your first performance! Everything is going to be fi- GAH!

Zelda slips and crashes into you, sending you onto the thankfully soft bed. Her hands immediately shoot to her mouth, shocked at what she accidentally did.

"OH NO I'M SO SORRYI'MSOSORRYI'MSOSORRY-"

You wave a hand, "It's... it's alright. Just... gonna lie here for a bit, today has been exhausting."

Zelda rubs her arm, "Y-yeah, we should probably head to bed."

You sigh and begin to roll yourself off the delightfully soft bed, "Pass the pillow, please. Oh, and if you could get my cloak out that'd be nice, it's supposed to be cold again."

Zelda shakes her head, a blush spreading across her cheeks, "N-no, Link look. Just... just sleep in the bed."

You stop rolling and stare at Zelda.

Zelda rapidly shakes her head, "L-look, we're both adults right? And we're friends, who traveled on the road together! It's... it'll only be weird if we make it weird, right? Just... there isn't wrong with friends w-when it's a desperate situation like this right?"

You're still staring at her as Zelda looks away, looking...strangely crestfallen and whispers so quietly that you were certain she hadn't intended for you to hear, "It... wasn't weird when we were kids..."

She remembers...?

You... think you've been missing something about how Zelda acts around you...

You throw up your hands in defeat, "Alright, let's just... go right to sleep. Isn't that different to camping on the road, no need to make it weird."

"Y-yeah," Zelda mutters, the deepening blush telling you that maybe you'd made a mistake.

Ugh, why does this have to be so awkward? A-atleast Zelda feels just as embarrassed about it. I-if you just keep your backs to each other it'll be like the other person isn't there and you won't feel weird for sharing a bed with a g- with another person.

Right?

"AGAIN WITH THE BLANKETS?!"

"Oh my, had a restless night you two~?" The serving lady teases the two of you the next morning as you both tried to enjoy your ham sandwiches and soup.

Her face paled noticeably however when you both turned to stare at her, baggy eyes filled a hatred for all things good and cheerful.

"I... I'll... just... leave you two alone!" She stammers out, before scampering off.

You and Zelda both turn to look at each other, a quiet agreement forming between you.

"Two beds from now on?"

"Two beds from now on."

Never did you expect two people to get so close to murdering each other than last night. Still, your friendship had endured the two of you kicking each other and stealing blankets and this morning there were no hard feelings only a shared hatred of everyone who was cheerful in the morning. Ugh, you weren't even sure what the two of you were even expecting in sleeping in the same bed, even you were beginning to remember that when you were kids it ALWAYS ended up like this. It almost played out scene for scene, other than the initial awkwardness and no maid to rush in and shush the two of you.

But well, at least you got to remember a bit more of your shared childhood, that was a plus.

"Soooo...." Zelda begins, "What are we doing today?"

"I have no idea."

She sighs, too tired to make any comment, "Well, there's the academy. We might be able to learn more about the current state of Lanayru and the viability of me getting healed there. Or well... you will, someone is bound to recognise me there."

"Not sure how well I'll be able to relate it to you."

She grins a bit, "You just need the Sheikah slate, it can scan any document you point it at. Just uh... don't let anyone catch you with it."

You rub your chin, "That's quite the handy feature, think we'll be able to find anything useful?"

Zelda leans back in her chair, "I hope so, we're going there blind. I wonder what the princess is up to now, or if she remembers me..."

You lean forward, resting your arms on the table, "Princess?"

Zelda leans in as well, nodding, "Mmm, we were close after.... sorry, after the um...thing."

You wince, even referring to her friend it was hard for her to talk about her mother's death.

"Hey, you see it yet?!" Someone from another table asks their companion,

"No, haven't been there yet. Is it really covering the place?"

The man nods, "Yeah, thought they were endangered. Incredible really, and on the sacred grounds?"

"Yeah, must be a blessing."

"Silent Princesses..."

Zelda's eyes go wide, and she whispers at you, "Silent Princesses?! At the sacred ground?!"

"What's the big deal?" You whisper back, confused, "They're plants, incredibly useful plants but just plants."

"They're my favorite flower! But blooming in the city, this is a scientific curiosity!! Argh this is such a tough decision! I can't go there alone!"

Yeah, you'll need to make a decision. Do you find out more about where you're going and any potential dangers or go to the sacred grounds and see why Silent Princesses are blooming in the middle of the city.

Returning to your room Zelda instructs you on how to use the scan feature with a book she borrowed from the innkeeper. Opening the book to a random page she holds the Sheikah Slate over the book. A beam of light shoots out from the "eye" and rapidly darts over the page, smoke rising up even if it didn't burn the page. In a second it had passed over the entire page, and then Zelda shows you page converted into an easy to understand text document on the slate.

"The Sheikah Slate is fairly intelligent as well. If you scan a map or a relevant excerpt from a book it'll update its own map and database with any relevant data. Scanning books, travel logs or even just transcripts about delivery time will not only make the map in-depth but could allow it to actually chart a likely route for a ship before it even leaves port," She explains, handing the slate over to you.

"Wow, that's... kinda incredible honestly."

"But of course, my ancestors thought of everything when designing it," She says with clear pride, she then fixes a serious look on you, "Do not let anyone see it. You'll also need to leave your weapons with me, they won't let you in armed."

Always a catch....

Zelda walks with you to the door of the inn after you ask for directions from the innkeeper, worried eyes constantly glancing to her precious Sheikah Slate. She does wish you good luck, though reminds you to be back by a few hours after midday so you have time to put some good distance from the city before it gets dark.

The city was as busy as ever, but you do manage to navigate your way towards the Academy. It was a large structure, with its own courtyard. Students in uniform and academics wandered about, though it seemed empty today. Signs easily directed you towards the library, and after quickly explaining what you were here for to the Librarian they direct you to a quiet study room and the sections you can find the books you want. Luckily no one found it particularly weird to study a place before going there, though as you didn't have a library card you wouldn't be able to take any books out. Which suited you fine, it might be awhile before you returned to castle town.

You gather up whatever recently published books, charts and maps you feel are relevant to Lanayru and the Zora domain before moving to the study room and setting them onto the table. Yet before you sit down a thought strikes you and you quickly return to the librarian. He raises a curious eyebrow when you speak about your request, but seems understanding when you say you were from the Ordona province and really knew little about it despite your curiosity. He directs you to several books, and you thank the man before returning to the study room and closing the door behind you.

Then, you get to work.

The maps and charts were easy enough to handle, you just scanned them in and watched as the map displayed on the Sheikah Slate lit up with new information. It even seemed to handle the less accurate maps, somehow finding where they were pointing too and placing down landmasses or buildings.

When you got to the books on Lanayru though, you had to view everything with a far more discerning eye. Most of it was useless fluff you didn't care about or ancient history that wasn't relevant. You needed more recent information which you found in immigration pamphlets for the region. It was strange, it seemed there was a large influx of immigrants to Lanayru which didn't make much sense. Lanayru was far more adapted to Zora life than Hylian, and its wetlands were infested with monsters. One of the older books had especially made that clear, warning of Lizalfos, Octoroks, and even the dreaded Lynel. In these harsh conditions, it was no small wonder that the Zora had become fierce warriors and expert healers.

You cross reference the population demographics in the imperial census book and the mystery deepened. Hylians were edging out the Zora in population size, concentrated mostly in the Zora capital and other villages that had cropped up. Strangely, the actual number of citizens were incredibly low yet the census information didn't list who those non-citizen Hylians were or from where in the Empire they had come from. In fact, there was a dearth of information available other than that of the citizens who all reported a gross income well in excess of any you had seen before.

Cross referencing the information in the pamphlet with the census information was providing a context you didn't quite understand. The Pamphlet boasted of the main industries of Lanayru which was its large rice fields and mining. The pamphlet boasted of the unique look of Lanayru rice, which was said to glow faintly, while mining it seemed to only consist of Luminous stone. Fishing was non-existent as an industry from what you could find, which seemed strange.

The rest of the information you wanted to know was strangely missing, so you couldn't cross-reference what the pamphlet was claiming. The Lanayru region apparently boasted some of the empires crack troops, and the maps did seem to list a rather large number of forts scattered throughout the province. Reading further in the pamphlet urged citizens to stay to the roads, not due to monsters but 'feral Zora' who lash out any Hylian they see. It elaborated that while the Zora have been successfully integrated into the Empire to be truly safe citizens should keep an eye out for Zora wearing topaz necklaces. These signify their devotion to the empire, and they are perfectly willing to serve the needs of any citizen they meet.

Then before they can elaborate on it the Pamphlet immediately begins talking about the wonderful views of Lanayru, the unique glowing waters, the great monuments, and cities constructed at the behest of the regional governor, Duke Luca Abele. It waxes endlessly on about this duke, in fact, most of the pamphlet seems to be devoted to praising him. His diplomatic skills were said to be second to none, and he was apparently well loved by the Zora people and how he had successfully brought them into the empire. By his grace, Zora healers work tirelessly to preserve the health of citizens, as the environmental costs of firewood collection have been extinguished due to the Luminous stone mines. He oversees the running of Lanayru from his palace, which overlooks the Zora's capital.

But through all this, there was not a single mention of the Zora royal family. A feeling of dread rolls over you as you flip through the book on Lanayru's history until you find it, a short blurb before the book went into praising the duke.

The Zora royal family according to the book despised the Hyrule royal family, and when the great plague hit refused to offer their healers even as the Queen and her handmaidens died horribly under their care. They blamed Hylians for the great cost inflicted on their people, yet Princess Zelda soothed their hearts and for a time there was peace. Yet when she died that rage entered their hearts and the debased and rumored incestuous prince and princess took their royal guards and attacked the imperial diplomats who came to parlay peacefully with the Zora. The battle was fierce and costly, but the empire prevailed and the siblings were unfortunately struck down before they could be tried. The king was broken with grief, and the duke went personally to console him. The book goes on and on about he soothed the king's heart, and how King Dorephan was so moved he eventually became an advisor to the Duke only asking that his children would be remembered for all the good they had done before their tragic transformation.

You felt honestly sick reading that, as you had read in an older book outside the library about the Zora Royal family a few years back. It was only a snippet, but from that book, you could tell the inconsistencies here. Zoras live an incredibly long time, and because of that at one point it took an age for them to mature, far greater than a Hylian would. But increased pressure from monsters and disasters eventually caused their maturity rate to accelerate, until they matured at the same rate Hylians do. However, that old trait remained in people's thoughts, leading to the myth that Zora children were simply young adults and the telling of that event seemed to go out of its way to cast the Princess as such.

But that book you saw before contained the princesses birthdate. She was only eleven when she was killed.

You feel sick to your stomach, and your heart clenches when you think too what Zelda had said before. How are you going to tell Zelda her friend was murdered? That the Zora princess and her brother were painted as depraved lunatics by the emperor?

Damnit. Just... damn it all. She was a child.

You had everything for the Zora domain, but you didn't pack up. You just sat there, glaring at the book as though doing so would eventually change that horrifying history.

Eventually, you reached for one of the other books you had picked up, hoping for anything that would take your mind off that. It was a book on the old Hylian noble families written unfortunately after the deposing of the royal family.

All of them, save the ones that joined with the empire, were painted in negative lights. Pages were devoted to smearing everything about them. So when you finally reached your families section you were preparing for something ghastly but instead, all that was there was... well, basically just a few points. Despite having an entire province named after your family you were just... a footnote essentially. The really only negative thing that was mentioned was that your family were peasant born, who was given a noble title by Zelda's great something-or-other grandfather for their service. They were always fiercely loyal but it was your father who seemed truly notable, and that was because he was a childhood friend of the king before he became a royal knight. The Ordona province was just too remote for them to care about that line, and what information there was on your father was just basic cliff-notes someone probably scribbled in from a book of military achievements. You were even in there, except they called you "Lonk" for some reason and they listed both you, your father and the Ordona line as deceased.

A shame really, all you had really learned about your father's side of the family was that your house sigil was that of a wolf and you were the last of the line, house Ordona's line extinguished.

Your mother though, your mother's house wasn't. They were minor nobility from East Necluda, the author apparently not even knowing the names of the line other than they were listed in taxes year after year. It was probably because they likely weren't even a real noble house, simply a family from one of the coastal or island tribes that lived there. But it gave you a sigil for you to search for, that of a seagull.

You scan the information. It'll be something to look up if you and Zelda ever go to East Necluda.

Closing that book your eyes now fall on the last book you took out, one you were dreading to read. Only your damned foolish courage kept you from returning it.

The biography of Princess Zelda Saria Ilia Hyrule.

With a significant feeling of trepidation, you pick the book up and thumb to a random chapter dreading what you will find within.

A moment later and you're very glad that you have a private study room, as you break down laughing. It was an entire chapter devoted to how Zelda never raised a hand against someone and always abhorred violence. Even with your terrible memory you distinctly remember the fights you had with her, especially as she tended to get bitey.

With the feeling your previous apprehension was unwarranted and chuckling to yourself you flip to another random chapter, shaking your head. What you read however sucks any amusement out of you, replacing it with disgust and anger.

Queen Tetra, the book claimed, was not actually the Saint Zelda's mother. For how could someone like her have Sheikah blood flowing through her veins? In fact, the book claimed that Queen Tetra was infertile and that Zelda was instead born from a Hylian mistress of the king what came from the Rozsa kingdom who was sadly silenced to keep this truth from escaping. The queen claimed Zelda as her own, as only a child could give her any legitimacy.

How dare they. How DARE they! You remembered the Queen as fondly as you remembered your own mother, how many times was she there with your mother when you and Zelda got roughed up? How many times did she put the two of you to bed, kissing her daughter on the cheek as your mother did the same with you? Save for the hair and her father's eyebrows Zelda was the spitting image of her mother, how could anyone look at her and think Sheikah blood didn't flow in her veins? How could anyone claim that wonderful woman was not Zelda's mother?

You stand up so violently your chair clatters to the floor, taking off your large floppy cap to run your free hand through your hair as you paced back and forth. You were angry, not just at the insinuation but at how much it'll hurt Zelda when she finds out. You have to tell her, not let her find out from some strangers again. Why would they even claim she was not Sheikah anyways? Is this why the portrait looked nothing like her?

You manage to calm yourself, setting your chair upright and sitting back down. You return to the book and instantly regret it as it heaped on insinuation after insinuation. Unfaithfulness, abusive, greedy and cruel, anything they could get away with they heaped on her and soon the king himself. Everything good people remembered of them was an act, and Zelda bore it all because she was chosen. The Zelda they portrayed was nothing like the Zelda you knew then and now. There were a lot of miracles happening around her as people said, flowers blooming or people being soothed or healed. Her mother's death was portrayed as incompetence, and you feel a hot flash of anger how they gloss over your own mothers death.

Then it goes to the coup. The Yiga were there on a rescue mission, to save Zelda from the evil king. But the whole thing went awry, and the king threw his daughter to her death in the moat.
Hylia's white wings, they even included an etching of it. Yiga collapsing in grief or rushing to save Zelda as this caricature of the king throws your friend into the moat. Or rather a shoddy copy of her that didn't even bear a resemblance to the girl you knew, clad in white with her eyes closed and her hands clasped in prayer in front of her as she plunged into the water.

She was entombed in a mausoleum at the Sacred Grounds, an empty grave devoted to a lie.

Gods this was sickening and you... you'll have to tell her. You'll have to be the one who hurts her because with anyone else it'll hurt so much more, but you still hate yourself for it.

The librarian looks very confused when you return the books, obviously not expecting someone to look so obviously enraged by something. You begin to storm out of the library before stopping and turning to the Librarian, taking a deep breath to calm your nerves.

"Hey, those silent princesses everyone's talking about. Realized I'll miss them so just um... wondering. Are they growing around the..."

"Oh! Um yes, they're growing around the Princesses mausoleum," The librarian sighs, "That poor child must be speaking to us from the goddess's embrace, showing us the beauty of the flowers she so loved and reassuring us in these trying times."

You close your eyes, taking a deep breath, "When... when did they start blooming?"

The librarian scratches the side of his head, thinking "Just the other day, I believe they were first spotted that morning."

You nod, and then leave the Library, grinding your teeth together. They bloomed when you and Zelda entered the city. Damn it damn it damn it.

You truly, utterly no longer know what to make of this situation, how to handle it. Which is why you were standing, staring at the door to your room. You don't want to hurt her, you don't want to add to her stress by telling her about the flowers, that she really did make them bloom with her presence. You just... want her to have something good happen to her for a change.

You take a deep breath, steeling yourself. Healing, you need to get her healed. That... that can be the start.

You open the door, slowly so not to startle her, "Zel-"

"Hahahaha! You think you've won but I was only buying time for my dark powers to fully manifest!" Zelda says, holding your thankfully still sheathed sword aloft with her back to you as she menaces imaginary foes with it. "Come, face the black flames of my sword but be warned, I do not know what I'll do when consumed by them!"

She swings the sword clumsily, twisting around as she laughs in the faces of those non-existent enemies, "Hahahahahaha haaaaaaaaaaaaaaeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-'

The sword drops from her hands, clattering to the floor as her arms seem to curl up like they belonged to some dying insect. Her skin paled, her mouth dropping open in a soundless scream as her eyes widened and her pupils shrank to pinpricks as Zelda realized the true cost of her 'dark powers.'

How do you deal with this?

[X] Hug Her
-[X] Zelda... we need to talk.

You shut the door behind you as Zelda begins desperately trying to articulate words, with little success.

"I... Thi... Nu... Isn't-HEEE?!" Zelda shrieks when you cross the distance between you and her and in one swift movement wrap your arms around her and bring her close.

For a second you thought you're approaching this in the wrong way, Zelda's heart was pounding so hard you could feel it. But she doesn't push you away, instead awkwardly hovering her arms at your sides and shaking like a leaf.

"L-Link this is-" Zelda manages to stutter out, "I-I h-haven't p-prepared my... o-oh how does this go in the shadow sign saga-"

"Zelda..." You say quietly, prompting the princess to visibly gulp," We need to talk."

For a moment Zelda doesn't say anything, but she stops shaking and her heartbeat returns to normal.

"Link," She finally says, her quiet voice filled with concern, "What's wrong? What happened?"

And so you explain, telling her everything you had learned from the books. Zelda doesn't say anything the entire time but slowly goes limp in your arms, her strength leaving her until you alone are the only thing supporting Zelda. You get down on your knees as Zelda begins to curl up, her head buried in your shoulder, the dampness you feel spurring you to hold her tighter.

"Dead... They killed them..." Zelda whispers, hands clutching at your tunic, "She was s-so kind and they.... they murdered her..."

Zelda pushes slightly off you, curling so that her head rested against your chest and her hands found their way to the sides of her head, "Father, mother, e-everyone... they've made them into monsters and m-me into... into..."

She chokes and then the tears start flowing for real as she wails into your chest, rocking back and forth. All you could do was hold her, the anger at the injustice building in your heart sapped with every cry from the girl in your arms leaving you feeling drained. For now, you just want something in your friend's life to go right for once...

"Th-they're right though..." Zelda suddenly states with a manic edge to her voice, her crying rather abruptly stopping, "Th-the great s-saint Zelda, able to make m-miracles happen by just w-walking by..."

She lets out a choking sob before continuing, her voice now a fearful whisper, "E-everything I think I know is always wrong... I can't trust my own thoughts, my own memories... Maybe they're right a-about them too..."

Crimson eyes look up to meet your own blue, wide and bloodshot, "B-but shouldn't a saint have s-saved them? Either way you look at it I still f-failed them-!"

"Zelda!" You practically shout, "You haven't failed anyone, just you being alive means you haven't."

"But-"

"I still trust your memories, and I don't think you've been wrong about me," You say, giving her a small smile, "So if I'm something you got right, and I remember that they were great people then aren't your memories true?"

"And I'm going to be here with you," you tell her as she lowers her head and you pat her back, prompting a hiccup from the girl, "I may not be anyone special, just someone who can see his friend is hurt and grieving but we'll find a way to right this wrong. I don't know how but we'll honor their memory and change this image the empire has created of them and you, I know we will. Not because you're a saint or anything, but because you're still that girl in the mud splattered dress I remember. The stubborn girl who keeps going until she succeeds."

Zelda doesn't say anything, just simply resting her head against your chest. For a moment you think she fell asleep but eventually, she grips your tunic and whispers, "W-we should leave, please... I want to be as far from this place as possible."

You nod and help her to her feet. She was a mucousy, teary mess so you fish out a cloth for her to blow her nose on. You try to get her to sit and rest for a minute but she insists on helping pack, wordlessly putting away your belongings. You end up throwing on your Hauberk under your green outer tunic as she throws on the brigandine, the two of you quickly looking more like armed adventurers than the peasant bards you presented yourselves as. You slip out of the inn quickly, not wishing to talk to anyone and get the horses ready. While you were limited by the sheer traffic you push the horses, hoping to cover as much distance as possible before the sun dips under the horizon.

Hyrule's unique breed of horses was well known to have impressive strength and stamina. Even a farm horse like Zelda's could cover vast distances while a warhorse like Epona was in a league of her own, some claiming that horses of her caliber could never tire. Some say it was because they were blessed by some ancient horse god, other's said Hyrule's horse breeding used ancient magics in the past to create the ultimate horses. Either way, when you both pushed your mounts the two of you flew across Hyrule field.

When you both finally bed down for the night Hyrule Castle town was simply twinkling lights in the distance. Zelda though... didn't say a word, didn't even really eat until you forced some jerky into her hand. She just stared at the fire, her expression stony but there was something reflected in her eyes, something building as she held her knees to her chest and watched the dancing flames.

++++
The next day you take it slow, to let the horses rest up for the next big push. Well, Zelda's horse as Epona seemed to be ready to race across all of Hyrule. If only Zelda had one of the royal mounts, the two of you could probably cover vast distances without stopping simply due to the super...horse strength of those steeds of Epona's class. Zelda seemed to be glaring towards Lanayru the entire time, seemingly mulling over something in her head she refused to speak about when you asked. When you finally stopped for the night she wandered off for a bit as you got a fire going, only to return with two rather solid looking sticks.

She tosses one towards you, that you catch with a raised eyebrow and questioning look towards Zelda,

"Teach me how to use a sword," Was her answer.

You don't question her about it, only climbing to your feet and beginning to instruct her. You can guess why she wants to use a sword.

Thankfully Zelda doesn't seem to mind that the few hours you spend instructing her doesn't bear much fruit, as you'd intended it mostly to just see what she was having trouble with. The answer comes quickly enough, it seemed she was mostly trying to stab with her sword regardless of whether or not it was appropriate to the situation at hand. She does fall to the ground a few times, mostly due to her overcompensating on a swing but she's immediately back on her feet, teeth gritted and ready for another go.

When you finally both lie down to get some sleep Zelda is covered in dust and some scrapes on her hands. But she was still clutching her makeshift blade tightly, even as she drifted off to sleep.

The next few days you repeated that routine, instructing Zelda and getting her to practice through her mistakes, Hyrule field slowly turning into forests and swamps. Zelda was actually a quick learner, even if you weren't the best teacher. Actually trying to articulate what you wanted Zelda to do into words was difficult but she shows a remarkable ability to interpret your wild metaphors and poorly explained techniques. She picks up the basics quickly and at least seems able to actually be able to hurt someone other than herself with a weapon now, also compared to you Zelda shows a remarkable ability to think tactically and engage in far more underhanded techniques.

She does still have many beginner problems that hamper her ability to actually hit you, more than a few nights she goes to sleep nursing welts and irritation at you. You do try to reassure her though, she's plenty strong enough to make up with brute force where she lacks with skill thanks to her archery training, and her superhuman acrobatic skills and dexterity already puts her above many swordsmen. Sadly this seems to result either in her turning her back to you or throwing something at you. But then the next day she's back at it with the same level of enthusiasm, hounding you with questions or asking for advice on how to fix what she was doing wrong.

Soon all your conversations either resolved around teaching, training, hypothetical combat situations and oddly music. Both of you had taken to your new musical instruments and whenever you just wanted to rest a bit the two of you would spend long periods of time just playing your instruments, practicing to better play with each other as a duet. Zelda knew a fair few more songs than you though, so oftentimes it was just her on her lyre while you either worked or rested. Often you would find yourself stopping to listen whenever she would start to softly sing along, sometimes noticing other travelers pausing along the road whenever they heard her voice.

However, travelers were becoming an increasingly rare sight alongside whatever wildlife you would have expected. Your food supplies were starting to vanish, and fishing or hunting to replace them was proving difficult. Even Zelda who was nowhere close to as good an outdoor survivalist as you was beginning to notice a strange silence through the woods. Rain clouds were starting to become a common sight, though none had dumped their payload on you yet. When the roads started to cross streams, creeks and muddy water you began to look for fish, snails or crayfish to little luck. You couldn't even figure out a reason why until one night Zelda shook you awake.

"Link! Link the water!"

"Mmm?" You say, shifting in your bedroll, you'd started stuff it with your cloak as the omnipresent moisture was making nights very cold.

"Oh just get up and come with me!"

You're dragged out of your bedroll, Zelda thankfully letting you put your boots on as she leads you off the road towards the river with a ball of light in her hands providing illumination.

"Look! It's glowing!" She hisses, pointing towards the water where sure enough swirls and diffuse clouds of glowing blue light traced themselves through the water.

"Huh, that some sort of algae?" You ask, rubbing the sleep from your eyes to make sure you were seeing things correctly.

"I don't think so... hold this, I'm going for a closer look," Zelda says as she tosses the sphere of light at a tree and walks down to the bank, feet sinking into the river mud that made up the wide banks. Which was a bit strange, its not like there's been a drought lately.

She trails her hand through the water, the glowing specks clinging to her skin. She holds it up to the light sphere, revealing some shiny substance clinging to her hand.

"What is it?" You ask, getting closer for a better look.

Zelda squints at it, squishing the rather disgusting looking substance between her fingers, "It's... some sort of silt? Where have I seen... oh... oh no....Luminous stone!"

"Luminous stone? What all those light posts are made of? That stone isn't toxic, is it?" You ask as Zelda quickly washes it off.

Zelda shakes her head, washing off her hand in the river, "Well I wouldn't drink the water, but from what I can recall it isn't toxic or cancerous in low doses to Hylians. At least it's magical and isn't radioactive."

"Radioactive?" You'd never heard that term before.

Zelda rubs her chin, "Ah well, radiation is this... invisible energy. Heat and light are forms of radiation, though there are many types. Certain minerals and substances release a very harmful energy that can make you sick or cause cancer, these are radioactive."

"Ooooh," You say, nodding, "Like a cursed aura created by dark magic that hurts whoever gets too close."

Zelda gives you a very odd look, "No Link that's..." She pauses, considering what you said, "Actually that is technically correct. Sure."

"So..." You begin to say as you both return to your campsite, "How bad of an environmental effect is all that Luminous stone dust gonna have on all the wildlife here?"

Zelda bows her head, her expression dour, "Bad, it can clog gills, destroy fish habitats, plants seem to find it nutritious so it causes large algae blooms. If it gets really bad it can destroy the entire ecosystem."

"We haven't been seeing many animals..." You mutter as you kick off your boots and climb back into your bedroll.

"We haven't even entered Lanayru proper yet, and the province is very large. There must be a careless mining operation nearby," Zelda says with some worry as she climbs into her own bedroll, "But... I am worried. All those street lamps... they must have taken a staggering amount of Luminous stone. I hope they got it all from Eldin..."

You silently agree as the Gorons homeland was rather resistant to environmental disasters due to it being rather difficult to environmentally damage an erupting volcano. Turns out everything being various degrees of on fire was sometimes a plus.

The next day it started raining, hard, and you began to long for Eldin. The rain battered against your face, arms, and legs while you tried to keep your cloak as close around your body as possible. It didn't help that apparently, your green tunic got itchy when it was wet. Eventually, the two of you called it quits and dragged your horses off the road to cover. Setting up a tent was considerably easier than doing it yourself with Zelda helping, and you even manage to set it up that you wouldn't have a puddle forming underneath you. Of course, you then ran into a rather distinct problem.

"Do we... really only have one tent?" Zelda asks, staring at the small leather and thankfully still dry tent.

"Do you want hypothermia?"

"I'm sincerely considering it, yes," She says with a sigh, "I need to learn some sort of fire magic..."

"I'll get a change of clothes, just climb into your bedroll and it'll be fine," You tell her while heading back to the horses. After making sure the horses are in a dry place and your saddlebags won't become completely soaked you grab a change of clothes plus your instruments and quickly sprint back to the tent. Zelda thankfully had hung up her wet clothes, set a light into the roof of the tent and seemed to be doing her best to hide under a blanket. Quickly changing out of your wet clothes and setting them to dry you set Zelda's bundle of clothes down beside her and then clamber into your own bedroll.

"Are you done yet?" She asks, peeking out from under her blankets as you begin rifling through a pack.

"Yeah, still got some bread and meat here so we'll be able to eat tonight even without a fire. Here," You say, offering it to her.

A pale arm extends out, and you catch a glimpse of crimson eyes peeking out from under the blankets. The arm stops extending out midway, as the eyes constrict to pinpricks and a strange choking noise seems to come from Zelda.

Feeling kinda chilly without a shirt on you just set the bread and dried meat down beside her which she snatches up and pulls into her bedroll.

"You're actually going to eat in your bedroll?" You ask, incredulous until you hear the sound of her trying to wolf down a piece of bread.

Shaking your head you eat your paltry meal, listening to the sound of rain hitting the tent.

"We really need to get a chess set, or cards or something..." You mutter, followed by a grunt of agreement from Zelda.

"You know, when I got really bored when I was living alone I always just... started to try and busy myself. Try to keep me sane, you know? I'd write stuff down then wipe it away cause I couldn't afford more than a couple pieces of vellum, read the same book a hundred times or I'd just talk to Epona..." You start to say, unsure of why you were bringing up, "Always felt like she was listening to me, like she understood..."

You know Zelda's listening, you saw her shift under her blankets.

"Sometimes though.... I'd get really dark thoughts. Just this... rage or depression that would just come boiling up from nowhere," You scratch at a finger, lost in thought, "Start to consider doing things I'd never think to do normally, one time I just walked off in a random direction with nothing but what I was wearing. Felt it wouldn't matter if something happened..."

You laugh, rubbing the back of your head, "Sorry, I sound like I went totally crazy don't I?"

"I don't think you did Link..." Came the whispered reply.

"Heh, well... Don't think I can really go back to that anymore, probably will go crazy..." You pull out panflute, before glancing over to Zelda, "Hey you mind if I play a bit?"

"No, I'd like to hear you play."

You smiled and nodded, before pressing the panflute to your lips. With the rain as the percussion, you played song after song, simple ones you played on rainy days just like this one until the light orb winked out and soft breathing came from Zelda's bed roll...

"Link! Wake up Link!"

"Mmmm, just five more minutes..."

"Link our clothes are glowing!"

"Mmmmwha-?"

"Look!"

"Huh... looks like they're covered is that Luminous dust. But how..?"

"The rain... I dunno we must be close to a mine and dust from it mixed with the rain. The alternative is..."

"How bad?"

"Really bad..."
++++
The next day the rain had become a light drizzle, and the two of you spurred your horses on hoping to cover as much distance as possible. It was treacherous but you stuck to the main road to hopefully reduce the risk of your horses injuring themselves. You make a good distance, and by the evening the rain finally ends which allows you to get a fire going. You manage to collect some dry firewood that was buried under a fallen tree. When you return though Zelda is missing and a flash of fear goes through you until she emerges moments later with a bow and pigeons clasped in her hand and wearing an awkward smile.

"I uh... heard them so I just grabbed my bow and went after them. Thought we'd... have something nice to eat, you know?"

You nod and smile, and she hands the pigeons over for you to prepare. You swiftly do so, and soon the two of you are enjoying the first fresh cooked meat you've had in ages. Or at least, that's what you intended but...

"Do these taste... weird to you?" Zelda asks, chewing on a piece of meat.

"Yeah... I know I cooked out any parasites but..."

She shakes her head, "I think they're still edible, but what could be affecting them?"

You swallow the last piece of meat, but feel like you've just eaten a stone that sits uncomfortably into your gut, "We still don't hear any insects, frogs.... It feels like we're going somewhere dangerous..."

The two of you choose to use the tent again due to how damp everything still was, though with a bit less awkwardness this time around. The next day though proves to be a scrocher, the sun beating down on the two of you, combining with the humidity to make both of you absolutely miserable causing you both to just go through your water skins. None of you dared touch the rainwater or riverwater, so you ended up eventually having to stop and carefully ration your remaining water. Your horses somehow make good distance though, and you knew for certain you were now in Lanayru proper.

You don't use the tent that night, it being too hot and humid for you to even consider it. You dearly wish you did that morning though...

You awaken feeling like someone was smothering you. You shoot upwards, opening your eyes to discover a haze had settled over your campsite. Zelda was hacking up a lung beside you and you soon join her as whatever this mist was irritated your throat, nose and eyes.

"W-what is this?!" You manage to choke out as you wrap your cloak around your mouth, you could barely breathe.

"ACK koff koff I dunno, but it's making my scars burn," Zelda manages to tell you as she does the same and the two of you race over to calm the horses. Thankfully the wind picked up, blowing the mist away and finally revealing what the culprit was dusted over everything.

Zelda wipes it off her, looking absolutely enraged, "Dust, it's all mining dust-ACK!! Goddesses how do people live here?!"

"It's killed everything else," You note darkly, using what water you have left to wash away the dust from Epona's snout.

You certainly hadn't seen anyone on the roads. Lanayru didn't look like it was the home of anything now, it was just a dust-covered pit now...

You ended up taking a road off the main road, one that would hopefully remain uphill so you aren't caught in another blast of mining dust. Hoping that you were just near a mine you pushed your mounts to hurry on, trying to put as much distance between you and what you hoped was the mine as possible. Hooves thundered against the ground, your horses seemingly wanting to be as far as you did from that cloud that almost smothered you. When you finally slowed to get your bearings you were well off the main road but thankfully still heading towards the Zora capitol.

It was then you heard it, music drifting in on the wind. The sound of... an accordion?

Do you investigate?

[X] Yes, you'll need somewhere to camp anyways.
-[X] Try to come into sight of the other camp from a safe distance away to see what is there and if it is safe.

You both guide your horses towards the music, each of you ready to turn your horses away if it proved to be an army camp or worse. As you came closer it became slightly harder to not charge on ahead, as the smell of cooking vegetables and meat drifted towards you on the wind. The camp you quickly spot was on an outcropping of rock off the side of a hill, rather close to the edge for most people to be comfortable yet those on top definitely did not care how high off the ground they were. They were humanoid birds, a male, and female. Rito, you quickly realize. The male Rito was large and muscular, his blue feathers standing out like a beacon. He was playing an accordion while looking out over the valley, so engrossed in his music he seemed to not be paying attention to anything else.

The female was younger and far less colorful in appearance. Most of her feathers were a beige-colored white, but she also had a rather noticeable crest of red feathers that resembled a long mane of hair tied into a ponytail. You really weren't familiar with Rito though but at a guess, you'd say she was a similar age to you and Zelda. She was tending to a pot sitting over a fire, stirring its contents with a sturdy ladle. A lyre sat near her, one made of exceptional craftsmanship and gilded in what could only be gold.

"That's... I recognize that Rito on the ridge! It's Kass! He was the apprentice of my music teacher, the court poet." Zelda quietly tells you, her eyes wide.

"And the girl?"

Zelda shakes her head, " She looks familiar but I don't think I ever met her.... Hmm, Kass, if I'm remembering right, left my teacher's service to get married to one of the daughters of my mother's ladies in waiting, who was a Rito. She... bears a remarkable resemblance to her actually, that's her old Lyre actually, though is far too young to be his wife. She must be the younger sister and his sister in law."

You stop Epona, looking over to Zelda with a serious look, "Could they be dangerous to meet?"

Zelda pauses, gripping her reigns tightly in her hands as she considers the situation, "There... is a danger Kass would recognize me. I don't think it'd be a safe idea to go by anything other than Sheik while with them. But... my late teacher was Sheikah and a great judge of character. He dropped everything to attend Kass's wedding, and they kept in touch. I... I would like to believe they're good people, and that we can trust them no matter what they realize about me. I also would like to know more about the Rito, how they've faired since the empire's occupation."

You nod and direct Epona up the slope towards the Rito's camp site. Zelda follows behind you, fiddling with her scarf to cover her face. You both take it slow, not wanting to look like bandits charging in on the Rito's camp. The girl spots you first, jumping to her feet and holding the ladle up as an impromptu club.

"Kass... Kass!" She begins to call out to her companion, "Big brother!"

The other bird finally noticed as both you and Zelda hopped off your horses, raising your hands up in a placating gesture.

"It's alright, we're just travelers. We don't mean you any harm," Zelda says, looking towards the girl, "Sorry for the intrusion, but we heard your music and followed it here."

The girl relaxes, lowering her deadly soup ladle and looking a bit ashamed of herself. The blue Rito laughs, patting his companion on the shoulder, "Haha, it's alright Medli. Sorry, we've had a few bad encounters lately so we are a bit jumpy. I am Kass, a traveling bard and this is my apprentice Medli," Medli bows in greeting and Kass looks at you both with a curious expression, "What brings you two out here?"

Zelda steps forward, "I'm Sheik, and this is Link. We're also traveling musicians and... um... is something..."

Kass's eyes had gone wide, his beak hanging open as he stared at Zelda, even leaning forward to get a closer look.

"Those eyes! You're...!"

"I um... don't know what you mean..." Zelda mumbles nervously, glancing away. Medli just seems confused, glancing between Kass and Zelda.

Kass blinks and seems to realize something, he coughs into his... wing...hand.... Hand, "Yes um... sorry. My teacher was a member of your tribe so I got a bit carried away."

Zelda seems visibly relieved, and you didn't think it'd be best to correct her assumption, "It's perfectly alright, though I'm a bit nervous that you recognized me as Sheikah."

Medli's eyes go wide as Kass chuckles, shaking his head, "I understand, please come and warm yourselves by the fire. Though I'm afraid we don't have enough to offer you a meal."

"It's alright, we have our own supplies," You reply, waving a hand and Kass nods.

The two of you return to your horses and get your food before returning to the fire pit, Kass and Medli having taken out bowls and wooden spoons for their stew. Taking a seat on nearby rocks you notice Kass looking at the two of you with a curious expression. Medli, however, was barely concealing her curiosity and was watching both of you with wide red eyes, her spoon nearly missing her beak.

"I don't mean to pry, but I never imagined to find a Sheikah in Lanayru. May I ask what you're doing here?" Kass suddenly asks, and Zelda nods. Wordlessly she pulls down her scarf, revealing her horrifically scarred face. Ruined flesh stretched and strained, translucent pitted skin making it look like someone was peeling back rotting flesh from a skull. Kass winced noticeably as Medli gave a horrified gasp, her spoon falling from her fingers back into her bowl as she clapped a hand to her mouth. When she realized what she had just done her horrified expression turned to shame, and she opened her beak to apologize. Zelda shook her head, giving the girl a sad smile but Medli could not meet Zelda's eyes.

"I'm... sorry, for everything you must have gone through," Kass says solemnly, eyes downcast.

"No no, it's alright. But thank you for your concern, though I must ask you the same question. Lanayru has been..."

"A pit," Kass finishes her sentence, his expression now grave, "Like you though, we have little choice. Soldiers spend their rupees readily to alleviate boredom, and a bard trained by the old court poet has little value to anyone else."

"The court poet?" You ask, and Kass nods.

"Yes, a wonderful man who taught me everything I know. A Sheikah like your friend, he entertained the courts by teaching them of Hyrule's ancient history through his ballads. Music can carry the most powerful of magic, and his knowledge was second to none."

"He... always seemed to know a poem for the occasion, always teaching a lesson through song..." Zelda muttered quietly to himself, and Kass gave her a sad look.

"The Yiga took many great lives that day, and we're all lesser because of it. I do my best to carry on my master's teachings, singing his ballads to whoever will listen so that we never forget our past. I believe that would have been my masters wish."

Zelda's expression was sad, but the smile sitting on her face was as genuine as it could be, "I am sure he is honored and rests easy at the goddess's side knowing his songs are in such good hands."

Kass inclines his head, "Thank you, your kind words move me. Though... I must ask, how... did anyone else..?"

"Our villages still stand, we lost many friends but the Sheikah survive," Zelda informs Kass, and a palpable wave of relief seems to flow over him.

"That's.... after that night and the chaos that spread we'd feared you were all..."

"We are the ancient shadow tribe of the goddess, it'll take more than the Empire to end us," Zelda states, her tone darkening.

Kass nods, then look's over to you and Medli, who were watching the conversation with obvious interest, food hovering halfway to your mouths, "Haha, I apologize for speaking of such a heavy topic during dinner. You two must feel rather left out!"

Medli shakes her head rapidly, "No no, it's fine! I'm fine with just letting you two talk!" She says, and you nod in agreement.

"Come now, Link was it?" Kass asks, eyeing you up. His eyes seem to focus on your clothes and a spark of recognition goes through his eyes, "That's quite an interesting outfit you have there. Where are you from?"

"Oh, this?" You say, pulling on your green tunic "Sheik got it for me, I'm actually from Ordona."

Kass rubs his beak, a glint in his eye, "Link Ordona then, I can't tell if you resemble your father or your mother more."

You freeze. He would have known both of them, wouldn't he? Medli was now staring at you as well, crimson eyes as wide as they could go.

You rub the back of your neck, a nervous laugh escaping your throat, "Haha, you caught me."

"Well, this is truly a most joyous meeting then! Tell me, how is your father?"

You scratch your cheek, unsure of how to respond. "He passed away a few years ago..."

Kass offers you a sympathetic look, "My apologies, he was a great man and a true knight. Is there anything I can do?"

"Thank you, and yes actually. Could you tell us why you're even bothering with getting rupees from the soldiers here? Surely it'd be safer to remain in the Rito's lands?"

Kass sighs despondently, while Medli sets her spoon down into her bowl, "You wouldn't know if you've been living in Ordona, too far from it all and the empire has done much to suppress the truth. We've been driven from our homes, our lands taken and divided up for the Empire's people. The Rito are now wandering bands, forbidden to settle in Imperial lands. Medli and I sell our musical talents to buy needed tools and supplies."

"It's been... hard, on everyone," Medli suddenly speaks, her voice quiet, "We're often gone for long stretches of time, and we both miss my sister and nieces terribly. I'm just happy that I'm able to be of some use to everyone."

"What do you mean?" You ask, concerned.

"Before all this I was training to be a priestess, to follow in my mother's footsteps. I even learned some wind magic," She tells you, holding out her hand. An intense gust of wind seems to form and pull itself towards the palm of Medli's hand, dust, and debris gathering to form a miniature cyclone before with a flick of her wrist it vanishes, "But... the empire attacked and there was no one to teach me, and a few gusts of wind do not find food or medicine. I am grateful that I could learn what I did though, the dances, songs, and prayers gave me an understanding of music that could actually help my family, though nowhere close to Kass's."

"You're too modest Medli, you've been an indispensable help," Kass reassures his sister in law, but she doesn't look convinced.

"This isn't right..." Zelda mutters, and you only notice then she was glaring at the flames, her red eyes flashing as she clenched her fists, "There has to be something I... we can do to change this!"

Kass was watching Zelda with a contemplative expression, glancing between her and you for some reason. Medli, however, places her hand onto Zelda's, "Please, do not burden yourself when you've already suffered so greatly. Just knowing there are people who care about what happens to us is enough to give us the strength to continue through this hardship."

Zelda doesn't look remotely convinced.

"Actually, speaking of that there is a song I would like to sing to you, a warning of what land you are heading into," Kass suddenly says, cutting off Zelda's retort and knowing her reveal of who she is.

"Oh? But we have nothing to pay you for it though, it doesn't seem fair when it's your only source of income," Zelda replies, waving her hands but Kass simply shakes his head.

"Then why don't you sing to us afterward? You did say you were also musicians. I'd consider it a fair trade!" Kass says with a laugh.

Zelda looks over to you, uncertainty on her face. You nod, and she turns to accept Kass's deal as you ponder his intentions. Kass due to his bardic training probably viewed music as the best way to get a message across. More, you suspected Kass intended for Zelda to learn the song herself, for what purpose though you'll have to wait to hear the song.

Medli and Kass converse among themselves for a moment, before taking up positions across from the two of you their instruments in hand.

Then they begin....

Oh early in the morning, fore the sunrise
They get outta bed an open their eyes
Wit dirty old trousers in reds an blacks
they pick up their tools and pick up their ax

say way oh, the dust it blows
say way oh, the dust it blows

They just march down that road, to Dorephan's old mine
Just like their elders when the wages were fine
But Dorephan's long gone, and so is his grace
now ain't no one happy in this miserable place

Say way oh, the stone it glows
Say way oh, the stone it glows

Down underground it's dark and it's cold
They don't get no breaks they do as their told
The dust crews get down on their hands and knees
to do anything that angry foreman please

Say way oh, the dust it blows
Say way oh, the stone it glows

But the foreman he's under the Dukes greedy thumb
Making them miners work till they're numb
They pull out that stone and make that man rich
An' come home broken, face black as pitch

Say way oh, the dust it blows
Say way oh the stone it glows

An' up in that palace, where the greedy Duke hides
there's riches and treasures he ne'er divides
But down in Lanayru, a dirty wind blows
The stews are thin and there's rags for clothes

Oh the Dust Domain, she's a terrible place
Put a limp in yer walk, and a scowl on yer face
when the miners come back with pittance for pay
Makes you wonder why the e'en get up the next day

Say way oh, the dust it blows
Say way oh the stone it glows
Say way oh, the dust it blows
Say way oh the stone it glows

As the last note fades both you and Zelda clap, and Medli and Kass both bow. Zelda's expression though is dark, an anger you've never seen before from the princess practically radiating off her. It was the kind of you would expect to be a prelude to a bitter violence, something you aren't sure you ever wanted to see from her.

"So, what'd you think? I was planning for it to be mostly for travelers so-" Kass begins to ramble, but the unexpected calmness in Zelda's voice when she replied cut him short.

"It was a lovely song and quite informative on the state of Lanayru. Would you perhaps mind if I were to share it with others?"

So that's Kass's game, a blow to the Duke's image told through song and a warning of the poverty you will encounter on your way to the capitol. But you don't think Kass expects or is even aware of the fire in Zelda he just lit with that spark.

"Of course Sheik." He replies as Medli returns to her seat, setting her golden lyre down beside her.

"Ah, but we have our own song to play. Come on Link, I think the song we've been practicing might be a welcome reprieve from tonight's heavy tone."

You shrug, and the two of you collect your instruments before returning to Kass and Medli, who were eagerly awaiting your choice of music. The two of you stand before them, a princess and her tag-along woodsman, and ready your instruments.

Zelda strums her Lyre, eyes closed as you bring your panflute to your lips. Then she begins to sing...

Beside the sea red roses growing
Beside the sea white lilies showing
Beside the sea their beauty telling
My true love sleeps within her dwelling

Beside the sea the stones lie scattered
Where tender words in love were uttered
While all around there grew the lily
And sweetest branches of rosemary

Beside the sea blue pebbles lying
Beside the sea gold flowers glowing
Beside the sea are all things fairest
Beside the sea is found my dearest

Full the sea of sand and billows
Full the egg of whites and yellows
Full the woods of leaf and flower
Full my heart of love for ever.

Fair the sun at new day's dawning
Fair the rainbow's colours shining
Fair the summer, fair as heaven
Fairer yet the face of Elin

While Kass was giving pointers to Zelda you and Medli were setting the camps up for the night. It was going to rain from the looks of things, so you and Zelda will probably have to share a tent again which was an embarrassing thing to have to do when you were sharing a campsite, as neither of you wanted to create any assumptions from your new friends. You did get a chance to talk with Medli a little bit. She was so serious about everything and seemed to go out of her way to make herself useful. You couldn't help but feel she was putting more of a burden on herself than was necessary.

You finally finish setting up camp when you hear someone walk up behind you, the strange light footfalls easily telling you who it was.

"Yeah, what is it Medli?" You ask, turning to face the Rito girl. Medli starts a bit, her beak clicking shut. Evidently, she didn't expect you to notice her that quickly.

Her surprise quickly vanishes though, and uncertainty seemed to fall over her.

"Um..." She begins, before she looks at her feet, wringing her hands.

"It's alright, you can ask me anything," You say, grinning. You wonder what she could want-

"Do you remember my mother!?" Medli blurts out, before clapping her hands over her mouth.

"Pardon?"

Medli starts bowing repeatedly, saying quite quickly "I'm sorry that was rude I shouldn't have just suddenly asked out of the blue and- "

You hold up a hand, "It's alright Medli, breathe. You don't have to apologize. Could you repeat your question?"

Medli straightens up, breathing out a sigh of relief. Huh, her and Zelda share a lot of mannerisms. You wonder if the Rito and Sheikah have similar social etiquettes.

"Sorr- err I mean, what I wanted to ask was when you lived at the castle did you happen to meet my mother, do you... remember her at all?"

You shake your head sadly, "Sorry, I barely even remember seeing my own mother much. Their duties to the Queen must have taken up much of their time."

Medli bows her head, disappointment clear on her face, "It seems we're very similar then..." She says quietly.

"You didn't get to see your mother much?"

Medli shakes her head, "No, Hyrule castle was so far away and my mother was always so busy. When she did return she would always seem so tired until she saw my sister and I..."

She turns slightly, glancing towards her Lyre she had set against a stone wistfully, "Our mothers were truly amazing people. They along with the other ladies in waiting and Queen Tetra were known as the Seven Sages, the greatest sorceresses in all of Hyrule. They helped so many people, changed so many lives for the better. Many still remember them as holy figures, even though the Empire would rather they be remembered as evil witches. It's... hard to imagine after hearing all their great deeds that they were even real..."

"They were our moms, that's how I'll always remember them," You state, leaning against a tree, "No matter what people say of them."

Medli nods, but her eyes linger on her lyre.

"That lyre belonged to your mother, didn't it?"

"Yes..." She says, eyes downcast with a hand pressed to her chest, "It is the Rito Harp, a sacred artifact to my people passed down from our ancestors. My mother would use it as a focus for her magic, her holy powers allowing her to unlock the Rito Harp's full potential. She... left it to me before she left to deal with the plague, told me when she returned she would teach me how to unlock its powers..."

She looks away from the Rito harp, blinking away tears "It seems fate never wished for me to follow in my mother's wingbeats. I feel guilty every time I use it, hoping that a more worthy owner would appear..."

You put a hand on Medli's shoulder, and she looks up in shock, "I think it's in the hands of the owner most deserving of it. Your mother gave it to you because she loved you, and it's a symbol of that love for you. She would be proud of the amazing, caring young women her daughter grew up to be."

Medli's feathers seem to become a bit ruffled looking, and she clicks her beak a few times. She then looks away towards the ground, yet even though she wasn't physically capable of it you could tell she was smiling, "Thank you Link, your kind words mean a lot to me."

You let go of her shoulder and she steps back a bit, scratching a cheek with her feather... finger...feather-finger.

A silence stretches out, and just as you're about to feel awkward a thought strikes you.

"So..." You begin, hoping to change the subject to one less heavy, "You and Kass seem pretty close."

"Mmm," Medli nods, looking over to her brother in law who'd taken out his accordion again, "Even before he and my sister started dating he was close to my family, always spending time with me and Amali. He was always something of an older brother to me. I... think how he was always looking out for me was what made my sister fall for him."

She paces a bit, eyes downcast as she remembered, "When... my mother passed he helped alleviate the burden on my sister, and it wasn't long until they were married and my nieces were born."

She chuckles a bit, "I never imagined the two of them as parents, but I guess raising me helped prepare them for five daughters."

That poor woman...

Medli snickers at your expression, "Yes, Saki always teases them that she doesn't know how they ever sleep when she barely got a wink with Tulin."

"You know, Kass would tell me stories about you whenever he returned from the castle," She says, glancing back over to you.

"Oh?"

Medli nods, "He'd tell me how the castle maids would have to physically separate you and the princess when you got into a fight, but then an hour later the two of you would go off exploring the gardens, the Princess collecting snails and bugs to show off."

...Has your relationship with Zelda changed that little?

"Do you... miss her?" Medli suddenly asks.

Uh oh, you aren't sure if you can tell Medli you'll be trying to block out Zelda's snoring later tonight.

"Well..." You manage to get out, trying to think of something, "It's been a very long time."

She nods, her expression mournful, "My apologies, I shouldn't have asked you to try and recall something that must feel like it happened a lifetime ago, especially with the Empire's lies distorting the truth."

You raise an eyebrow, "I take it you're not a fan of their narrative."

"No, the Princess Zelda my brother told me about is amazing because she is so... normal. A normal girl who suffered far too much, yet continued on despite it all. Her story... gave me the strength to continue on when all seemed lost. I wish I could have met her, perhaps.... perhaps she would have found a proper path for me," Medli mutters the last part, her eyes again drifting back to the Rito Harp, "Perhaps she was the one the Rito Harp was truly for..."

"You think she's really dead?" You ask, trying to keep Medli from slipping back into the self-doubt.

"No, " Medli says resolutely, "I... I know she's out there, in hiding. Maybe she's given up on it all and has chosen a quiet life. Perhaps we shall meet her on our journey, Kass and I. If that happens I... I want to give her the Rito Harp. So she has something to connect her to her mother through my own. And I'll tell her you're alive, I promise you!"

You sigh, folding your arms in front of you, "If Zelda's the same dork I knew I think she'll just want to be your friend, she might even want to play music with you. I think that's what you should give her if you ever meet Zelda."

Medli nods, and you get the impression she's smiling at you again. However, noting the position of the moon (or rather how it had disappeared behind some rainclouds) causes her to jump, and she wishes you a good night before running over to her brother in law in a flurry of feathers, almost tripping in her haste.

You sigh again, a faint smile on your lips before you glance upwards, "She sure does look up to you."

Zelda leaps down from the tree branch above you, landing softly beside you, "I hope I can become friends with her, she's pretty amazing despite her self-doubts."

You smirk, "You two sure do have that in common-ow," Zelda had just lightly punched you in the shoulder, cutting you off.

Shaking her hand because she forgot you were wearing chainmail Zelda sighs, "But I don't know if I can face her as Zelda. Even if she knows the real me I... I don't think I'm..."

"Not overthinking it," You finish the sentence for her, "Look, you're not comfortable with revealing who you are right now. That's alright. But we'll meet her again, I know we will. When that happens, I know you two will end up the best of friends."

Zelda gives a small smile, not even her scars serving to hamper it, "Thank you Link..."

The two of you stand there a minute, the faint smell of rain drifting in on the breeze. A thought strikes you then, a question you should have asked in the beginning.

"Uh... Zelda?"

"Yeah?" She answers, sounding confused.

"Why were you in the woods when you overheard us?"

She looks away, embarrassment clear on her face, "Not everyone has an iron bladder like you Link."

The next morning the four of you pack up, and Kass and Medli say their goodbyes and best wishes to you before taking off. They do give one last bit of advice though, healings are rare now despite the Zora Healers still being intact. No doubt the duke was responsible, but they don't know the details. Perhaps it wasn't as bad as first impressions suggested?

Zelda too was fired up from all the injustices the duke apparently committed. She suggested trying to find whatever resistance those feral Zora represented, perhaps they could aid you or at least provide more information. However, there was no guarantee that they had the information or had a healer. Finding them would be easy though, all you needed to do was find a Korok.

[X] Find the Zora Resistance using a Korok to guide you.

The two of you immediately set off trying to find a Korok, which was easier said than done. The two of you lift rocks, kick over logs and peer into animals holes to no luck. After an hour you both reconvene, the frustration from the lack of progress wearing on Zelda's nerves.

"Ugh, if only they'd make this easier. We're going to waste the whole day at this rate!" She laments, kicking a pine cone down an abandoned animal burrow.

"YAHAHA! You found me!"

You think you see something snap in Zelda as one of her eyes starts twitching and she holds her hands out in a claw-like gesture, making strangled noises. While Zelda is having a moment you kneel down next to the Korok and ask where the Zora Resistance members are, or at least a major band of resistance. Strangely, it seems to know a very specific group,

"Yeah, they're the only one!"

That catches you off guard, "Wow, they must be huge!"

The Korok tilts it's adorable little head, "I guess they are, they're like THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS big!!" It explains, holding out its stubby little arms and waving them back and forth.

Zelda, having screamed her frustrations into her cloak, approaches the Korok now with her Sheikah Slate in hand, "Could you mark on the map where their current camp is?"

"Uhuh!" The Korok happily exclaims, waddling over the Zelda who had taken out her Sheikah Slate. The Korok tries to tap the screen to mark the location, yet for some reason the slate refused to register it pressing its stubby little arms against it. It kept pressing and pressing until finally, it slammed its face into the screen. A ding indicated that the location was registered, and the Korok points to the blip on the map.

"Here here! They've made a camp here!"

Zelda looks at the map, brow creasing as a frown forms, "Hrmm, that's right in the wilds, probably a swamp. Well, makes sense with Zora but it's going to be tricky getting there."

"We'll have to go on foot once the roads turn to dirt, we'll drown our horses if we take them too far into that swamp."

Zelda nods, then turn's back to the tiny Korok, "You've been a great help, I hope we'll meet again."

"Aw, I hope so too pretty lady! Buh-bye!"

And then with a flash of leaves, it was gone...

The two of you speed down the roads, both of your horse's hooves thundering against the water-logged roads as a light drizzle kept your cloaks tightly wound around you. You were starting to run into people now, merchants mostly and patrols. It was getting to the point you had to slow down constantly to not arouse suspicion. The patrols were actually rather surprising, often large groups of Imperial golems lead by a couple officers. You never imagined they'd be sending out this many troops on simple patrol duties.

You also began to pass paddy fields full of workers, Hylians all dressed in the same red and black uniform. Soldier's watched them with disinterested gazes, spears resting against their shoulders though you saw a few crossbows loosely gripped in hand, shock bolts sparking slightly in their quivers. The workers kept their heads bowed low, their faces gaunt. An air of misery seemed to come off them, one that only intensified as packs of golems patrolled amongst their numbers.

Zelda stared at them for a moment, incomprehension clear on her face until the horror she was witnessing dawned on her. You steered Epona in between her and the field, shaking your head.

"You'll only put them in danger."

Zelda's expression contorted into an expression of pure rage, "I am NOT letting my subjects be enslaved!"

"Sheik, those are shock bolts. If one gets fired it'll kill everyone within several meters of where that bolt lands. Believe me, I'd love nothing more than to run in there and free those people. But I won't let innocent people die."

She grips her reigns tightly, gritting her teeth, "Dammit, dammit, dammit, DAMMIT!"

She turns her horse around, just as a few guards were noticing the two of you with your horses at the side of the road, and sends her horse into a gallop.

You catch up with her easily enough, her horse was nothing compared to Epona. She eventually slows her mount to a trot, and you get a good look at her face. Even with the rain you could tell tears were flowing, her face scrunched up in anger, her reigns clutched so tightly they were digging into her hands.

"Dammit... Dammit..."

You don't know what to say to her...

The two of you continued on in silence. Eventually the roads became so muddy it was dangerous to continue on horse, both of them beginning to sink. You both get off your horses and lead them off the road. Thankfully there was a grassy hill that was well secluded. You doubt anyone other than you and Zelda would find your horses and Epona was well trained to keep Zelda's horse from wandering off. Getting packs out you fill them with what meager supplies you have left you hand one to Zelda and the two of you begin your long and arduous trek.

Zelda still hasn't said a word to you, but before you can ask she suddenly says, "I.... I'm sorry if it seems like I'm angry at you."

"It's fine Zelda, Slavery is..."

"It isn't right, it isn't right that they're able to get away with this," She growls, adjusting the pack on her shoulders, her feet sinking into the mud as she walked ever forwards.

"We're going to meet up with the resistance. We'll be able to do something then, maybe they even know of a shrine that might have... something that'll help."

Zelda suddenly lets out a frustrated growl as her boots sink past their rim into the mud, and you spend a few minutes helping free it from the mud. The two of you continue on, feet squelching in the mud. In some places, the road was completely washed out and was essentially underwater. More than a few times you had to detour just so you didn't have to wade or swim. You were still both soaked and covered in mud by the end of it, both of you slipping and falling into mud or water more than once. Insects were beginning to come out, gnawing at the two you.

"You know? I bet they hate Hylian's and this is all pointless!" Zelda bitterly says after checking your position on the Sheikah Slate and you both realized how far you were from your goal still, "I wouldn't blame them, their people have been enslaved and their land despoiled by the Empire. I'd hate us all as well!"

"Zelda, that's the swamp talking."

Zelda lets out a breath, looking back to you, "Yeah it is... Ugh, its getting dark."

You nod, "Yeah, it's going to be too dangerous to continue at this rate. Is there someplace nearby that isn't marshland?"

Zelda consults the Sheikah Slate, the insects taking your lack of movement as a sign to swarm in, "Hrmmm, there's an old roadside shrine to Hylia nearby. The road the shrine was on went out of use a long time ago, but the shrine itself will probably be dry."

"Right, we make for it then."

The sun had almost set by the time the two of you got to the shrine, the swamp getting worse with every step. Any dry clothes in your pack was a dream, and your food was most assuredly now mostly marsh water. So when you had gotten to the supposedly abandoned road neither of you were expecting the road to be in any condition other than waterlogged. Instead, it was a perfectly serviceable dirt road, one wide enough for multiple carts.

The shrine itself was a winged statue of Hylia set onto some ruins whose architecture that seemed rather familiar. Pillars with intricate designs carved into them supported connecting beams that lead to the small shell like building the statue was set in, the whole thing resembling a small temple than a shrine. Set in front of the statue to Hylia was a pool, filled with flora and fauna from the surrounding marsh.

"This road..." You mutter, inspecting the tracks in the wet dirt, "It's seen regular use, and this shrine seems familiar.... wait, isn't that architecture-?"

"Sheikah, this is a Sheikah shrine to Hylia. It must have been constructed to protect travelers going through the dangerous swamps," Zelda states, placing a hand against one of the pillars.

You smile, shaking your head. It seems you've found somewhere to camp for the night and something for Zelda to keep her mind off-OW!

"Huh?! Link, are you okay?!" Zelda asks, whirling around with a look of concern.

"Ah, yeah. Kicked something metal in the road," You tell her, rubbing your foot. You look for the offending object and seeing the iron thing you grab it and pull it free of the wet dirt.

You instantly regret it.

"Shackles. Those are shackles," Zelda says quietly, stepping back from you. She glances around, in face contorting in fury, "No wonder this wasn't on the map, it's a road to transport slaves!"

She was hyperventilating, shaking with anger, "They probably use this shrine as a stopping! GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" She screams, kicking the pillar, her bruised toe doing nothing to assuage her anger. She collapses, her back to the pillar and her head in her hands, "Why? Why have they been allowed to do this?!"

You run up her, skidding on your knees to get beside her. Your hand hovers over her back, unsure if you should embrace her or keep your distance.

"Curse them..." She mutters, "Curse them for their evil, for making me want... want to hurt everyone responsible. To... to want to ki-BAH!" She snarls, slamming her fist into the pillar.

"I.... I refuse to be the Princess who only sits back and prays. I need to do something, anything for those suffering! For Mipha, for Medli, the Rito, the Zora and everyone else who've suffered because of those with evil in their hearts!" She says to you, eyes alight with conviction.

You clap your hand onto her shoulder and nod, "And I'll be there alongside you, wherever you need my sword."

She gives a slight nod in return and stands up straighter than you had ever seen her stand before, her long blonde hair whipping back and forth in the wind. Zelda looks to the statue of Hylia, her eyes aflame, her body seemingly filled with a glow.

As in literally filled with a glow, her right hand was glowing. Her pack slipped from her shoulders, her Lyre retrieved from it.

"Zelda, wait... what's going on?"

"I need... to do something. The only thing I can for them right now..." She tells you, her voice distant somehow. Blue lines around the ruin suddenly lit up, just like the sheikah shrine. You could feel a thrum in the air, like something ancient had just awoken from a long slumber.

"Zelda!"

She walks forward with purpose, clearly in a trance but you had no idea what had cast it on her. She didn't seem under hypnosis, her entire posture suggested conviction, her face set in an expression of cold fury. She stepped out onto the pool, ripples spreading across the surface of the water with each soft footfall. You try to follow her but the moment you step onto the water your entire leg vanishes into the water, the water at least waist deep. She was... Zelda was walking on water!

She turns to you, bringing the lyre up as the water seemed to glow, motes of light drifting up from its surface as the smiling face of Hylia's statue was reflected onto its surface and for a second you swear her and Zelda's reflections overlap.

You look up into Zelda's crimson eyes, expecting them to be blank and unfocused but that same fury she had just a few moments ago was still there. She plucked the strings of her lyre, a clear note ringing out from the ruins even with the rain pouring down around you.

She closes her eyes, strumming her lyre and swaying to a tune that seemed to be coming straight from her soul, the glow from her hand bathing her in a golden light. You want to run to her but something stays your feet as you stay mesmerized at the girl before you, her hair billowing out like it was made of that same glow coming from her hand and...

You hold up your left hand, eyes wide as you stared at the source of the sudden warmth pouring from it, a golden glow and a strange mark seemingly etched onto your hand. You'd seen it before, on quiet nights when you glanced up at the stars. But never had it shown through your gloves!

Zelda... what... what were you doing?

"Medli! I think we should find somewhere to land!" Kass calls to his little sister who'd been lagging behind him. It was getting late, and with the rain increasing in intensity it might soon become too dangerous to keep flying.

Medli did not respond, and a flash of panic and fear cut through Kass's heart as he twisted in the air, whirling around to check on his precious sister.

He breathed out a sigh of relief when he saw she was just hovering in the air, wings flapping to keep herself afloat. Her back was turned to him, however, and she seemed to be staring at something in the distance. He glided over to her, hovering beside her.

"Medli, don't scare me like that! What's got your attention?" He asks, squinting in the direction she was staring at but seeing nothing of note.

Medli still doesn't respond, and he looks over at her, "Medli?"

Her eyes were wide, crimson eyes seemingly alight in the twilight. Her beak was moving, speaking yet no sound issued forth. It was almost like she was in a trance.

He didn't know what to do, if he tried to wake her she might turn violent and send them both crashing to the ground. Yet he couldn't just leave her like this! He needed to-huh?

The Rito harp...

It was glowing!

She turned, eyes drawn to the shrine that had suddenly lit up. The worms she was following spoke with surprised whispers that quickly turned to overconfident boasts. A prize to offer a tyrant, someone able to use powerful magics.

They filed past her, them and their dolls, not noticing her in the reeds. Even as she mouthed the words that seemed to pour into her heart.

She knelt in prayer, even as the rain beat down on her like the admonishments she always endured. Secluded from the world's troubles she did not know what was happening to the one she cared so much for. She could only prayer and hope, and she was completely devoted to it. So devoted, she didn't even notice her mouth forming words to a song she did not know...

They stopped in the fields and the mines, even as they returned to their prison for the night. Guards barked at them to move and they returned to their senses, a question on each of their minds. Did they... just hear a girl singing?

I hear your voice on the wind
And I hear you call out my name

"Listen, my child," you say to me
"I am the voice of your history
Be not afraid, come follow me
Answer my call, and I'll set you free"

I am the voice in the wind and the pouring rain
I am the voice of your hunger and pain
I am the voice that always is calling you
I am the voice, I will remain

I am the voice in the fields when the summer's gone
The dance of the leaves when the autumn winds blow
Ne'er do I sleep throughout all the cold winter long
I am the force that in springtime will grow

I am the voice of the past that will always be
Filled with my sorrow and blood in my fields
I am the voice of the future, bring me your peace
Bring me your peace, and my wounds, they will heal

I am the voice in the wind and the pouring rain
I am the voice of your hunger and pain
I am the voice that always is calling you
I am the voice

I am the voice of the past that will always be
I am the voice of your hunger and pain
I am the voice of the future
I am the voice, I am the voice
I am the voice, I am the voice

You watched as she sang, her voice echoing out from the shrine. She skipped and swayed across the surface of the water, a dance that left you mesmerized as though the golden locks flowing in the wind were some hypnotic trigger. Motes of light surrounded you, following swirls of golden magic that flowed past you. With every note she drew closer to you, crossing the surface of the pool with her dance.

Every word she spoke sparked odd feelings of nostalgia, bringing up some knowledge you weren't sure you had ever learned. Your hand closes around the handle of your blade as you hear others approach, a familiarity in it you'd never felt before...

Whirling Blade
and charged attacks

Zelda's song has awakened an ancient power belonging to the heroes of old! Focus power into your weapon to unleash its true power! Unleash a powerful whirling attack, extend the length of a bladed weapons edge and increase their damage, deliver a flurry of blows in a split second, increase the power a spears thrust or slam a weapon into something to create a wave of kinetic force, the heavier the better. But beware, only the most powerful weapons can withstand this sacred power, and many will quickly break down from the stress. Make sure you don't exhaust yourself either by overusing it.

You look back over to her as she enters the final stretch of the song, so close to you now. You just want to reach out and catch her, draw her close and make sure she was alright. But the sound of many footfalls draws you from that bewitching display, and your sword and shield are soon in your hands.

With one last note, she reaches dry land, softly touching down beside you. The glow fades, everything returning how it was except for the blue lines from the temple. A gasp issues from her lips and she falls to the ground, breathing heavily.

You tear your attention away from the approaching foe and are instantly at her side, "Sheik! Are you alright?!"

"Wha... what did I... Why did I...?!"

"You don't know? Can you stand?"

She nods, climbing to her feet with shaking limbs, "It... it was just like then...Wait, Link why are you armed?!"

"We have company, can you use your bow?"

She nods, even if she looks a pale and she puts her Lyre away to draw her bow just as Golems file in. There had to be fifty of them! Some were armed with crossbows, others with spears, maces, and swords. Their shields were not emblazoned with the Empire's sigil but that of what you can only assume was the Duke's own. A few particularly tough looking ones, blue streaks indicating their advance construction, were wielding large deadly looking claymores.

They stood at attention before with robotic movements some of them parted to reveal several armored men. They looked over you with disinterested gazes, but when their eyes fell on Zelda they immediately lit up.

"Well, well, well you put on quite the show sorceress," The leader, Soldier's armor emblazoned with markings indicating he was an officer, "And my oh my, you're quite the pretty one aren't you?"

Zelda pulls down her scarf, glaring at the soldiers as one stepped back with a gasp, "What is it do you want, we've committed no crimes."

"You both seem to have your hands on your weapons, threatening a soldier of the empire? Tsk tsk," The officer shakes his head, and you can't help but want to relieve him of it.

"There are monsters in this swamp, we need to be careful," Zelda retorts.

"Well, you're quite in luck. My men and I are here to escort a beautiful flower like yourself out of this wretched swamp to somewhere you'll be safe and... well looked after," He says, and you tighten your grip on your weapon.

"And just where would I be taken?"

"Why," The man says, placing a hand onto his breast, "Straight to the duke. I'm sure he would love to hear your beautiful voice, and the Zora priestesses in his employ will be more than glad to heal your scars."

Zelda's face contorts with anger, "Employed? Bah, you keep them as prisoners don't you?!"

The officer shakes his head, "Oh no no, the Topaz collars keep them quite compliant with all the Dukes... desires."

"Topaz..." Zelda mutters, brows furrowing in confusion before her eyes widen in horror, "Oh goddesses, you put shock collars on them!"

"Yes," The man says, clearly becoming bored of this back and forth, "I'm afraid it was the only way for them to keep using their healing magic. They've saved many lives they'd have refused thanks to their barbarous culture and resentment."

"You wretched scum! You and your duke will pay for this!"

"Please, you're embarrassing yourself. Did you get that out of a book? Well, I'm quite afraid you won't be reading anymore, we have a collar in just your size."

"I won't be letting you put her in chains," You say, brandishing your blade.

The man scoffs, "Oh please, the only reason you aren't dead is because we are proper soldiers of the empire. We aren't savages like you Hyruleans. Your sorceress friend will agree willingly to come along, have some fun with us and then go straight to the Duke where he will generously reward us for such a wonderful catch. Just as he did with that last girl."

Realization seems to dawn on Zelda, and her next words are spoken with anger you had never suspected she was capable of, "You... you...!"

She raises her bow, arrow nocked as she snarls, "I'm going to kill every last one of you!"

The man rolls his eyes as his golems file in to protect him and the other human controllers, "Fine, kill the boy and make her watch. The Zora can clean her up before we present her to the duke-"

"Oh I'm afraid you won't be killing anyone today," Another voice filled with bloodlust spoke as the sound of bare wet feet against stone comes from behind you.

The man and his fellow soldiers step back, and you sense a genuine feeling of fear from the despicable man "Y-you!"

A girl walks past you, and you realize quite quickly she was not a Hylian. She seemed to be a humanoid fish, her head itself even has a tail and fins. Her skin was red and white, with the white parts being her face, front and the insides of her arms. Fins extended from her wrists, waist, and shoulders and her eyes were golden with slitted pupils. She was taller than you or Zelda, and had a lean and predatory look to her, like a half-starved wolf. The Zora girl was clad in a unique set of armour. Her open-faced helmet seemed to have been made of multiple segmented parts that covered her head and head-tail, with two flaps to cover the two fins framing her face. Her chest-plate seemed design in such a way to not fully cover the slits on her chest, her gills you realize. Some silver and blue mesh-like covering made of a material you'd never seen before protected her belly, with a belt consisting of several pieces of metal carved into Zora symbols and inlaid with opals holding it in place. She was wearing metal arm and shin guards but seemed to forgo any other clothing, which made it quite obvious it was a she.

Most noticeable however were the weapons she wielded, an intricately designed single-edge blade shaped almost like a fishhook and made by all appearances of pure silver with blue, glowing ornamentation that rested easily against her shoulder, while in her other hand was a rather cruel looking dagger, with a serrated edge and made of the same silvery material.

"M-Mipha?!" Zelda sputtered out, her expression that of utter disbelief.

"After all, it's just like this girl said," Princess Mipha of the Zora says, her lips splitting into a bloodthirsty grin that revealed sharp, dagger-like teeth as she pointed her sword at the foes in front of her, the other hand holding the dagger raised as well, arm held up as if to protect her face with the dagger in a reverse grip.

"We're going to send you vermin all straight to hell!"
