My name is Aria Elice Isabella Owl, and I am a common forest Elf girl.

But that wasn't always the case, because I have memories of a previous life, one were I was both male and human, and where things were so different from here that I could call it a completely different world.

Or to put it simple, I died a guy and I reincarnated as a elf girl in a fantasy world while keeping my memories.

Sadly, instead of slowly regaining the memories of my past life as I grew older, I was a baby with the mind of an adult and all the memories of being one, it sucked.

Also, do you know how slow elves age? I was a baby for years! It took me until I was thirty years old to finally be able to walk on my own and talk in complete sentences.

Yeah, turns out having memories of a past life doesn't help much if your new species talks a completely different language.

I wonder why I have them? Since I was born an Elf It could be literally centuries until I find some clue that says why or if any of those memories will be useful. Being the tech guy who repairs computers, cell phones and tablets is totally useless here.

Anyway, since my full name is a mouthful, most people call me Aria. I am currently 100 years old and that's the equivalent to being a ten years old human for Elves. As I said before I am a common Elf, that's not mean as an insult, it just means I am not royalty, or anything special as my race goes.

And I have to say it, Elves are lazy bastards. Since they live about ten times longer than humans they take things way slower. I am considered a problem child because as soon as I could walk and talk well I decided to learn everything I found useful instead of taking it slow as others.

Granted I am limited because I am a child but at least I know how to survive in the wild, I can read and write three Elf languages, talk the trade tongue and write and read it, and a lot of useful things more.

Sadly, I can't use magic, not directly, and despite what other races think, that's not rare for an Elf. Only one out of ten Elves can use magic, is just that for other races it tends to be one out a hundred people, more or less. And Elves are not the most magical race, those are magical creatures like talking animals or monsters. But we are the most magical race humans and other "High" races respect, like dwarfs.

And of course Spirits have even more magic, but they are not considered a race.

There are no Gods, we killed them. Yeah one would think that would clue me in, but no dice.

Anyway, it would get too boring if I just described my daily life as an Elf child, so let's jump ahead for a bit, right?

*****

Tonight, is the night of the Red Moon ceremony, because, like it happens once every one hundred years, the full moon will be blood red at night.

I would be worried because I was born a hundred years ago in this world, but i wasn't born this month or Spirits protect me, during the night of the Red Moon. But my little sister will be.

My yet to be born sister, I fear for her safety, I fear stupid profecies and destiny even if they haven't told me anything about it.

So I asked, I begged and whined to be there when my sister is born. And thankfully my mother agreed.

I just hope I don't end killed as part of my lil sis tragic backstory. If something weird happens I am ready to run and hide.

Oh and if you wonder why I I said before we killed our Gods, yet I ask the Spirits to protect me? Is simple, the Gods asked too much and gave too little, the Spirits might not be as powerful as the Gods were, but they don't ask for our lives in exchange.

May you please wish me luck? Look upon the first star you see at night and say "I wish Aria good luck", pretty please? Thank you.

Of course, I am tired of reincarnation stories, is my sister the destined hero?

Elves are usually not very fond of wearing many clothes. The reasons are simple, we are physically weaker than humans and dwarfs no matter how much we train our body, so too much clothing makes us slower and heavier. And we tend to live in places were the climate is not very cold in winter or if we are forced to live in a place that's cold we usually use magic to make said place warmed that it would be naturally.

So imagine how uncomfortable I am, wearing several layers of red and white ceremonial clothing. Even if the fabric is thin and soft to the touch, it might be night time but we are in the middle of summer. Human memories or not, I have lived a hundred years as an Elf, way more time than I did as a human. And I might be the troublesome child, but I am an Elf troublesome child.

Still I have to admit that at least to my parents I look cute wearing these clothes. And that I like what I see of my reflexion in the silver mirror, Elves dislike to use glass since is so frail, save for the desert Elves who have so much sand around they just have to do something with it.

Buy an Elven glass sculpture, is better than any of you pathetic non Elf races can do and it only costs five times more!

As I walk holding my dad hand to the ceremonial altar I cannot help but to look around, seeing many Elves from far away places I never been before. There are forest Elves from the south, desert Elves from the east, mountain Elves from the north, and even a minor menber of the nobility, the so called Moon blessed who nobody who isn't "important" knows were they live.

I don't care if it's for my sister wellbeing, if that uptight bastard is here to take my lil sis away I will stab him. Is amazing how many weapons an uncomfortable dress like this can hide, even if I only got two knifes hidden because more would make me too slow.

****

The ceremony goes as well as you can expect when my mother is cursing the dead Gods for the pain of childbirth and crushing my poor father hand as she holds it.

And despite what other races say we don't use magic for everything, we might use it to prevent diseases or avoid having a child be born with defects, but we don't use any magic that would make childbirth less painful.

So I can't help but to be scared because I know someday I will be the one suffering the same kind of pain. I want children and orphans are adopted by the whole community, so the painful way it is. But not before I am at least over 200 years old, thank you very much.

Finally after what it seems like several hours but might be less, no watches or sand hourglasses in sight but the red moon has noticeable moved, is over.

My dad takes his almost pulverised hand to the healer while my mother holds a screaming bundle of joy. You know how newborn human babies are ugly to everyone save for the mother? Well we Elves are so damn pretty than it seems that even just born we are Spirits bless it adorable!

And of course she can only hold my little sister for a few minutes since they have to do some magic on her, my mother looks angry but doesn't say anything.

Finally after what it seems like an eternity but was probably just about ten minutes, mother has the baby back and can finally feed her.

Ugh, I can't help but to look away as my yet to be named sister is breastfeed, but even with that I notice the red circle that has appeared in her forehead, the same circle the minor noble has. I then stand next to mother and glare at the uptight bastard with all my hate.

Thankfully nothing bad happens... yet. I am gonna the best big sister ever and protect you, you will see lil sis!

03 Cat
Of course, I am tired of reincarnation stories, a strange creature apears?

●●●●

My little sister got the name of Luna Owl, making me envy her for having such a short name. While Luna is not a rare name for the female Moon blessed, the last one who had that name died centuries ago and it turned out to be our ancestor.

So far my sister seems to be gearing for the protagonist or as least important character role, being both a rare kind of elf and having a name that has not been used for a while.

That makes me wary, elves generaly don't have the dead family background, but as sister of an important character I have to be careful.

And it turned out I was wrong about that Moon blessed guy taking my lil sis away. Luna will stay with the family until she is about my age, and then it will be her choice if she stays or leaves.

But, considering that almost all Moon blessed are powerful magic users, she will probably leave to get proper training. But for now at least, she is safe.

Anyway since my family kicked me out the house after a whole week of following mother and Luna like a chick follows a hen, I decided to go hunting.

It took me years of convincing, but once I turned a hundred years old I was finally given permission to hunt on my own.

Wonder what I will get? A rabbit? A boar? Maybe a monster rabbit?

****

I can't believe my eyes, my rabbit trap... got a cat. One white cat with three green eyes that can talk and is cursing in quite a creative and colorful language.

Saying nothing I give the cat some of my dead rabbit, she seems hungry so she eats quickly. Then I give her water, and the idiot probably doesn't know what she is getting into as she drinks it.

Then I set the feline free and as she tries to run to leave, the rule of three favors in a row kicks in and she just... stops.

"Motherfucking elves and their fucking magic."

"What's your name cat?"

"Why do you think I... my name is Owen." She seems terrified by just admitting that. But while names hold power, they do not hold that much power. Some names are better not said, but for mortals the power of names isn't much... because they lack deep.

To put it simple, when the Gods existed just saying their names could call on their power, while you could yell my full name all day and get nothing.

"You never heard about the rule of three favors, right?"

Is quite simple, I captured a magical being and have it three favors in a row. She then tried to run away without acknowledging the debt, she is now mine.

It may sound cruel and unfair, but there are several limitations. For starters both beings involved in the pact must be able to understand and talk in the same language. Second, both creatures must have magic. I might not be able to use magic directly but as an Elf, I am magical. And third and most important, the pact doesn't work on beings not smarter than mere animals.

Of course the cat can get free if she does me three favors to pay me back... but she has a huge penalty for trying to run away without acknowleging the debt. Meaning that the feline is my servant until I decide to release her. And she still owns me three favors.

"But... how? You are just a kid!"

"And a Elf."

The cat then looked at my ears, she just noticed them now?

"Oh crap."

"Wait, you insulted Elves and you didn't know I was one? What do you thought it was happening?"

"I... well..." And then Owen looks down.

Mmm, maybe she just insults Elves everytime something magical happens? Ah is not like is that important anyway.

****

One important thing about the three favors rule, is that if the favors you give to pay back are not equivalent, is not the same to save someone life than to give them some food for example, both persons must agree. However since Owen is my servant, I literally have three favors she cannot refuse.

Yes, that has been abused a lot in the past and yes, for the reasons you are probably thinking. But without rules like that there would just be chaos and ruin.

So I could perfectly undertand why the three eyed cat was trembling.

"First favor, from now on, you are my pet."

Owen raised an eyebrow at that, why ask for a pet when you had a servant? I have my reasons.

"Okay." Is not like she could refuse but she still had to agree to make it count.

"Second favor, you will always help my sister Luna Owl when she needs help."

"Yes master." The tone showed that Owen was not pleased with that. As even if I let her free he would still be my pet and be forced to help Luna.

"And the third favor is, you will never betray me."

I could have asked for a lot of things, but with the feline being my pet, any act that she might take in revenge counted as betrayal.

"Yes master." Owen said almost grinding his teeth.

"And with that I set you free from being my servant." See? That's why one of the favors was asking her to be a pet. Pets aren't servants so this did not cancel that favor and also forced the cat to stay.

"Thank... thank you."

Why is Owen crying, did I do something wrong? I mean besides the three favors thing...

04 Punishment
Of course, I am still tired of reincarnation stories, and my parents are mean!

Or

Punishment

●●●●

You know what I got for getting a new pet? Being punished. Aparently at a hundred years old I am still too young for making a pact like I did.

So now that I am punished, I get to do a lot more chores than usual. Washing clothes by hand is a pain, specially since we use buckets instead of washing them in the river directly to avoid polluting it. Oh and because it builds character, while Owen enjoys scratches and headpats from other kids, the bastard.

Yeah okay she is a cat but you could at least not look so smug at my suffering!

At least mother let's me watch over lil sis about a hour each day. I would probably make a joke about whatever is left of my masculinity being kicked in the balls but I have been a female Elf for a century, so what masculinity?

And thanks to me being more active than other kids my age, is not like the extra chores tire me since I am used to do way more exercise, they are just boring. And considering how well my parents know me, that's probably the point.

And just to annoy them, I sing while I work while avoiding thinking how that only ever happens in fiction, because Elves and magic and talking cats were fictional in my past life after all.

"Sunny sky, smiling at me, nothing but a sunny sky do I see. Beautiful birds singing a song, nothing but beautiful birds all day long.

I love the sun shining so bright, I love things going so right. I do not care if the wind blows east or west, I do not care if things aren't the best.

Because the sunny sky is smiling at me, the sunny sky is smiling at me. The sunny sky... smiles to me!"

People are clapping at me? Uh, is just adults being nice, if my song and singing voice were that good kids would praise me too but they aren't. Granted that's because there are no kids nearby since they are pestering my cat, but...

Oh well for the equivalent of a ten year old human girl as I am it wasn't horrible at least, right?

●●●●

I am giving a bath, to a cat! You don't give baths to cats, they are supposed to clean themselves. Tell that to my crazy pointy eared parents.

Chasing the damn cat so it gets a bath aparently doesn't break any of the oaths, since pets or not cats are troublesome. Plus not taking a bath would not be a betrayal, we Elves don't use that word lighty. And is not like taking a bath would count as helping my baby sister.

It took me two hours of chasing her all over the village until she was too tired to resist. Then the bastard liked it.

I am giving a bath to a cat that purrs while I clean her. Yet I know very well she will do exactly same running away the next time my parents decide she needs a bath.

Not to mention I have to feed her too, lazy cat go to hunt something! Why I even made her my pet again? Ah right, for Luna, the sacrifices I do for my adorable lil sis!

So I finish giving the cat a bath and she ruins all my towels with her damn fur. Oi is too late to be changing your fur, is the middle of Summer!

Smug bastard, I should shave you in your sleep. No, don't sit on my lap, I won't pet you!

And I am petting Owen anyway.

Smug bastard and adorable cat, that's my pet alright.

●●●●

My punishment lasted six months, it might seem too much but Elves live ten times longer than humans so is not that terrible.

Not that I didn't hate it, it was the first time I had been punished for so long after all. And the day after my punishment ended I found out grandpa is visiting? I have never seen him. He didn't even come to lil sis birth and she is a Moon blessed, I wonder what kind of man he is?

His name is Augustus Owl, such a great short name, why in the Spirits my full name has to be so long?

My first impression of him is, that he is big. He is really tall, Elves are taller than humans but he is taller than anyone else I have seen so far, and that includes the bear beastmen that ocasionally trade with our village. He is a giant Elf with toned muscles like a swimmer and an imposing figure.

"Grandpa!" I run and jump to hug him even if is the first time we see each other. He seems shocked, as if he was not expecting that.

"You are so big grandpa! Did you bring me something?"

And then he laughs, is a Hohoho laugh that's pleasant to hear and then grandpa Augustus hugs me back. I am thankful for that, he is so tall that I had to hold myself with my arms tight to his chest to don't fall down while hugging him.

"So you are little Aria Elice Isabella, aren't you? Yes I brought you something dear grandkid." Augustus puts me down on the ground and gives me a beautiful crafted wooded box. It has a beautiful carved drawings of several animals.

I put the box over the table and open it, it has a simple lock mechanism with no key, inside there is a bronce pendant with a symbol I never saw before, so it must be quite rare.

"What's this grandpa?" I tilt my head looking confused in a move I practiced to make me look as cute as posible. After all if I am going to be a young cute girl for a long time, I better take advantage of it.

"That's your aprendice badge, if you accept of course."

"Uh?" I don't have to fake my confusion, aprendice of what?

Grandpa then glares at my mother "Alice, you didn't tell her?"

"She was being punished, I didn't want to encourage her to be reckless."

Grandpa Augustus groans muttering something in a low voice then looks at me. "I am sorry Aria, but could you go back to your room. Me and your parents need to talk."

"Okay Grandpa, can I take the box and the badge with me?"

This is interesting and I want to know what's going on, but they will eventually tell me and I don't want to cause trouble so soon after the months I was punished.

"No, is better if you leave those things over the table for now." I silently bown my head and go to my room, were my lazy cat is resting over my bed.

I sit next to her and start to pet her belly, she looks at me lazily.

"Mmm, what's wrong?"

"I don't know, why would making you my pet would end with grandpa Augustus wanting to make me an aprendice?"

"Mmm, you probably impressed him. You don't know what his job is, right?"

"No... but he must be quite busy if he took six months to come here to see me."

"I see. Do you want to leave the village?"

Do I want to leave the village? That's a good question. I am happy here even if I am considered a troublesome child because of how active I am. If I leave, considering how I never saw my grandpa before, Luna will grow without me.

But if I don't go, would that make things worse or better? I don't even know what the apprenticeship will be about.

"I... I don't know. I would have to learn more before I decide."

"A wise choice, now scratch my ears."

"Owen!"

"Sorry, now please scratch my ears."

And so I end doing that. At least my cat is learning that politeness costs nothing and gives her better results... I hope.

****

The argument of my parents and grandpa has been going for hours, they are yelling so loud I can even hear a few words from my room despite the fact Elves usually sound proof their rooms with magic. And maybe the fact that I left the door open might be helping just a tiny bit.

I... I don't want my relatives to fight and hate each other. It might sound childish, but if is my family, I want all of them to at least tolerate each other.

The easy choice would be to stay, Grandpa had a hundred years to visit and never did. But again, I don't have enough information.

You know what? I am tired of waiting!

And so I go downstairs and yell asking what in the Spirits name they are arguing about. My parents are surprised since besides being troublesome for being too active for an Elf, I am usually well behaved.

And my grandpa smiles at me.

"Well Alice, don't you think that she deserves to know?" Grandpa Augustus looks at my mother, who looks like she is about to yell again then just lowers her head.

"Fine, tell her."

"Little Aria, do you know what a ghoul is?"

I think about the question, trying to remember were I heard the word before, but all I come with is a videogame.

"Isn't that another word for monster?"

"No, while both monsters and ghouls are abominations, a monster is not smarter than an animal while a ghoul can be as smart as a menber of one of the High races."

"Okay." I tilt my head in confusion, trying to look cute, something I have many decades of practice doing.

"I hunt ghouls, and since you captured one and made it your pet, I want you to be my aprendice."

Ghoul? My pretty cat? Yeah... no.

"I refuse." I say and then run back to my room and lock the door.

****

Elves, humans and dwarfs are considered the High races. Beastmen are considered part of the Low races, together with goblins and others. And Dragons are too powerful to care whatever other races call them.

No wonder Grandpa didn't visit before, this village is frecuently visited by bear beastmen and we try to not be hostile to those of the Low races.

The terms High race and Low race are still used, but we don't make insulting remarks like Grandpa did.

I won't abandon my little sister to hunt ghouls. Sure, grandpa Augustus could be the greatest ghoul hunter ever, but to call beastmen stupid? I don't know about the other Low races but the bear beastmen I know are quite smart.

I taught the current leader math and to write in the trade tongue ten years ago after all. My parents weren't angry with that, they just were surprised.

Not about the fact I could teach others, but about seeing a beastman that wanted to learn from an Elf. But even then they did not call Beastmen stupid.

Maybe... maybe grandpa Augustus is not racist, maybe is just a figure of speech, but my parents don't like him and he never visited before. Surely he couldn't have at least visited once otherwise?

Anyway, my decision is taken. No one in the village considers Owen the talking cat an evil ghoul, just a pet.

Sure, there must be a lot of evil creatures out there, but to leave to learn how to hunt then, when I am basically a child by Elven standards? To leave my family and friends?

Yeah... no.

So I just stare at my sleeping cat and wonder if It would have been so easy to say no if my parents had approved.

No, it would have not. If Grandpa keep his insults to himself, visited every few years and he was a doting grandparent? I would have said yes.

Why is this so confusing? Is because a part of me wants to jump at the call for adventure?

Know what? I will become a monster hunter and later a ghoul hunter without grandpa help!

That way I can stay in the village, so Luna won't grow without her big sis.

Of course, considering my parents, I will wait a few years before saying I want to hunt monsters. Monster hunting is not unknown in these parts unlike ghoul hunting. Is also safer because monsters are dumb, to face something as dangerous as a monster with an actual intelligence behind it? Yeah no ghoul hunting until I am an adult at least.

●●●●

AN: What do you guys think, is Aria right about grandpa Augustus being a racist? And yes I know Aria might not have made the best possible choice but she is a kid not a min/maxer.

Ghouls and Spirits
In this story the term Ghoul means "Evil spirit". As ghouls are spirit like beings that are the evolved form of monsters.

So not all of them are undead, in fact most of them are not, since undead monsters are a priority to hunt to prevent any of them becoming an "evil spirit."

That's on comparison to spirits, that are nature spirits that formed from the leftover energy left after the world was made.

Spirits can become quite powerful, but still age and die, just much slower than any mortals, they also have children.

06 Reflections
Of course, I am still tired of reincarnation stories, did I make the right choice?

Or

Reflections

●●●●

My name is Aria Elice Isabella Owl, daughter of Alice Anna Owl and Eustace James Falcon. That's because male Elves usually take their last name from their fathers and female Elves take it from their mothers.

I am an Elf girl who is a century old, but that's the equivalent to being a ten year human girl. My hair is blonde and my eyes blue. My skin looks tanned but that's just the natural skin color common Elves have. I been told that I am cute and that I have decent singing voice for my age. I have a baby sister named Luna Owl that was born about six months ago, due to being born during a red moon, she is a minor nobility called a Moon blessed.

My grandpa Augustus Owl is a ghoul hunter and I refused to be his apprentice in a rude way, then locked myself in my room.

Is been hours since I said those words to my grandfather, and now I regret them. I should have been more polite, I should have stayed to hear what he had to say, but I let my emotions control me.

But even if I regret doing things that way, I doesn't change the fact that I don't want to leave my family and the village. I got used to this life, I want to see my little sister grow, and while I desire for adventure, I also think family is more important.

And thinking it better, while becoming a monster hunter might be okay, hunting ghouls sounds way too dangerous so I better don't do that. Becoming a ghoul hunter on my own? That was a stupid idea.

Now why would I want to hunt monsters? Because I want to help the village stay safe. Since I can't use magic directly I better start to learn how to use a bow and arrows. Hunting is safer if you keep distance from your prey.

Not that I am in any hurry to hunt monsters, there are still many things I want to do before that.

Of course, I hear someone knocking my door, I am a little girl, they are worried for me.

"Aria, can I come in?" That's my mother voice.

"Yes."

After being given permission she didn't really need, my mother enters the room and hugs me.

I hug her back, and we just stay like that for a few minutes.

"Is grandpa gone?"

"Yes, he wasn't happy with your choice. But then, he only remembered you existed when it was convenient for him."

I am surprised at hearing that, because my mother is usually kind and polite. Then again she and grandpa started to yell at each other minutes after he entered our house, so of course it makes sense that they don't like each other.

"Why? Why did grandpa never visit before, or came for Luna's birth?"

"My father is... a very stubborn person. He didn't approve of me marrying your father. I thought he would at least visit once in a while after you were born but not even having a grandchild being a Moon blessed made him show up. And then, when we finally see each other after a hundred and twenty years? He only wants to steal you away to make you a ghoul hunter."

"Is grandpa evil?"

"No. He is a great hero who has saved many people, but is very hard for him to change his opinion and he hates those of the Low races. That's because my mother died in the last great war, and since it was a globin who killed her... well... at least he just avoids the Low Races instead of something worse."

"I... I shouldn't have been so rude. But you two were yelling for hours, he never visited before and..."

"Is okay." My mother hugs me again and I cry. I don't know why, I just do. I don't know how long we stay like that, until finally my tears stop and she helps me to clean my face.

After that, me and my parents have dinner in an uncomfortable silence, Luna is sleeping peacefully, soo cute! What could have I done better? Would being polite really have helped if he is that stubborn? Yes I think it would have.

Because of those nearly useless memories I have from a past life, sometimes I forget I am still just a child.

And that's okay, most people only get to enjoy childhood once, I shouldn't try to hard to grow up since as far as I am aware, there is not some weird destiny waiting for me. And even if there it is, I should enjoy what I have while it lasts.

****

My aim sucks. I am glad Elves live ten times longer than humans because I am way too far from even being adequate using a bow, so is going to take me a long time to get good at it. I know is not my eyesight, I have no problem with that, is my useless hands eye coordination that when it comes to this is apparently really bad.

But being an Elf with no direct magic use, getting close and personal with a monster is a death sentence.

Whatever, I got enough humiliation for today, I am going to take a break to play with other kids.

07 Ghoul
Of course, I am still tired of reincarnation stories, my cat can do what?

Or

Ghoul

●●●●

Owen is not a bad pet for a cat, meaning she does whatever she wants unless my little sister is crying, then she does all she can to calm her down.

It is during one of those moments that I see my cat do something amazing. She stands on her two hind legs, extends her front paws and several multicoloured bubbles apear over my sister Luna and float in the air, then pop one by one doing several musical noises.

Owen can do magic! That's amazing! Yet I don't want to make Luna cry, so I will wait until she falls asleep to question my cat.

Is a long wait but finally my baby sister is asleep.

"So, you can do magic?"

"Yes, all ghouls can, we are an existence that's superior to monsters after all." She says proudly and then sits next to me so I scratch her head.

"Was those bubbles all you can do? Or you can do other things?"

"My magic always has the shape of bubbles, but it can do many things."

"Could your bubbles enchant arrow tips?"

"I guess? I never tried that before. But can't you just have another Elf do that for you?"

"I could, but having you around to improve my arrows would be more useful."

The cat seems to think about it for a moment, even rubbing her chin as she does.

"I want extra fish for doing that. And I will need to practice first since as I said, I never did anything like that before."

"Deal." I said and shake her right paw. This will mean me having to fish a lot more than I already do, and it will also cut my time to do other things, but is worth it.

With Owen traveling with me I will be able to always have enchanted arrows in the future. Of course there is a long time before I am ready to go monster hunting but just because I will live a long live it doesn't mean I shouldn't plan for the future.

Now, where did I leave that fishing rod? I am so scatterbrained sometimes!

****

Fishing with a fishing rod is kind of boring. I prefer spears or nets but since it also takes a long time of doing nothing; I can also use the time to read. We have a primitive Printing Press in the village, is all manual and takes a long time to set the metal movable types, but I guess is similar to the one Gutenberg invented back on Earth.

I heard the Moon blessed have a magical one that makes the whole thing faster. But since most of the Elves that can do magic don't want to sit down powering a machine all day, is just not practical to have one of these in the village. Is different for the Moon blessed since all of them can use magic I guess.

One thing I am grateful for being an Elf is that we like to have basic knowledge spread around. That's why I was able to teach things to that bear beastman.

Of course dangerous things we keep to ourselves, but we even shared how to make a manual Printing Press with mobile type with other races. I wonder if the bear beastmen have one considering how their boss is my former student?

Anyway, after about ten minutes I finally feel a pull on my fishing rod, so I get on that.

Wow this fish just has a lot of fight on it! I am glad I tied myself with a rope to a big rock, or it would have pulled me inside the river!

Then after ten minutes and the help of an adult I am finally able to catch it. I threw it in a bucket of river water and it barely fits. Is a very beautiful fish, full of... full of colors of the rainbow, shit.

Is a Rainbow Fish, anyone that eats it will get sick and die. Although I heard some people, not elves, keep them as pets. Wait, monsters have no problems eating it, thank the Spirits Owen is a ghoul, so it wasn't a waste of time.

****

Owen is very happy to get to eat Rainbow Fish, is aparently a delicacy amongst ghouls. Of course the next day, when Owen wakes up five centimetres taller, I worry that something went wrong.
"Owen... you grew! Are you okay?"

Owen looks herself over and smiles. "Finally! It seems that Rainbow Fish was the kick I needed to get more powerful!"

"Uh? What are you talking about?"

"Monsters can get stronger in many ways, same for ghouls. But as ghouls are a highter existence than monsters, we have more trouble getting stronger. Eating rare creatures like the Rainbow Fish is one way of doing it."

"Is the Rainbow Fish some kind of monster then? I never heard about that."

"No, the Rainbow Fish is simply one of the most poisonous fishes in the world. If a monster eats it it might get sick but would rarely die. A ghoul eating it proves that is superior to monsters by not getting sick at all, and so might get stronger."

"So if you eat a lot of Rainbow Fishes, you will keep getting stronger?"

"Not more that once or twice before that no longer works. A ghoul basically gets stronger by proving itself better than a monster, so eating a lot of the same kind of food would not do it."

I think about it for a moment then give her a scary smile. "Monsters can't read right?"

What? I just found a valid reason to not have my pet be an ignorant brute, of course I am going to milk it for all it's worth!

Of course, I am tired of reincarnation stories, have you ever heard about Spirits?

Or

Spirits

●●●●

"And so it was, that with his dying breath he cursed his own kind in a language so foul even demons don't use it. And since he was the First one, the blessed by the gods, the King, that curse still persists today even if the Gods are long gone." I say then I close the book, my cat staring at me with his eyes open wide.

"So that's why... Elves prefer peace? Because the curse makes it so Elves can only have children with other Elves? And since Elves growth rate is slow, war is very bad for your species."

"Yes, and is not a curse that will ever be broken, at least until a single Elf is the only one left. And by then our race will be finished anyway."

While humans can have kids with many races, the same for dwarfs, in this world there isn't such a thing as a half Elf due to what's know as the Progenitor's curse. Basically the one simply know as Elf, because he was the First of our kind, cursed us all so we can only have kids with our own kind.

I don't plan to have children for a long while, but that still annoys me. So I decide to change the subject.

"So, how is the work on the arrowheads going?"

"Slow, I can only get one out of ten right, the rest explode, turn to sand, change color and so on."

"That's expected, Enchantment is a hard skill to learn since the magic has to last. I want you to bring me the ones you did right and the failures the survived. Maybe I can figure what you are doing wrong." I then rub her ears playfully.

She opens her mouth as if to say something then closes it, apparently deciding is not worth it. Then Owen goes to get the arrowheads.

While is true that only one out of ten Elves can do magic and I am not of the ones that can, that's only true to what's called external magic.

External magic is what most people think when they heard the word magic, trowing fireballs, changing lead into gold , mind control, transformation and so on.

What all magic creatures can use, and yes that includes Elves, is called internal magic. Magic that only afects one own body.

So since my eyes are part of my body, I can use magic to let my eyes see magic even if I cannot affect that magic directly.

That skill is very common since any magical creature can learn to do it. Is called Sage Eyes due to a Sage supposedly having invented it.

There are other things one can do with internal magic but is basically making easier for one to train your body, healing faster than those that aren't magical beings and what's called Body Enhancement that all warrior Elves and even Monster Hunters use.

Body Enhancement is a dangerous to use magic that improves your body. Is forbidden to do it without a healer at hand because without healing magic any changes you do won't be easily reversed so if you screw up you will die or at best end crippled.

Monsters and ghouls use a type of Body Enhancement that's basically ritual magic. If a monster or ghoul performs certain actions it's body and power will improve.

Is unknown who set the ritual steps they must follow in their path to power, but it was probably the Gods. Yes, the Gods were the creators of all races, that includes monsters. Then why did we kill them? Because they were evil bastards, that's why. The only beings who were not created by the Gods are the Spirits.

So, do you want to know what those we call Spirits are? No? Well I am telling you anyway!

Spirits are an existence close to divinity than any other living being so they aren't considered a race but something above that. Like people, they can live, have kids, get old and die, but their power is something that only the Gods could supass. It was with the Spirits help that the Gods were killed and they are also the reason the World didn't fell into despair with the Gods gone.

They are beings the Gods did not create but formed themselves due to the Gods using more energy than needed when creating the World.

And because they get old, die and have kids, Spirits understand people in a way Gods never did.

Now, the reason why I am talking about this, is because it was the Spirits of the moon who blessed my little sister. So is something that affects me even if I never see a Spirit for the rest of my life.

When the Red Moon happens, is also the time in a hundred years when the moon is closer to the planet, so is the only time moon spirits can directly help people.

Spirits like to help, but they can also get angry easily, so one must be careful when dealing with Spirits.

And because she is a Moon blessed, Spirits will become naturally atracted to my little sister Luna when she gets older.

This worries me a lot, because as I said Spirits are quick to anger.

Owen wonders about her life, a life that from certain point of view, has not been very long. She used to be just a little kitten, then a Mage feed her monster meat and used magic on her, and she became a monster.

Her days as monster are best forgotten as she did many terrible things as a slave to that Mage. Then the Mage got careless and died, and Owen didn't eat him.

It wasn't because of any sense of shame or morals, she was a monster after all. It was because she hated that bastard so much that she didn't want to risk gaining any ability the Mage had by eating him.

Ironically by not eating him was how she became a ghoul. A weak one, but that came with the ability to use magic.

And then that Elf girl captured her. And Owen became a pet and the protector of a baby Elf girl.

And it... it isn't bad. The life of a pet cat, one where she doesn't fight, one where she plays tricks to make a child happy.

Aria is strange even for an Elf. But Owen is glad that her owner rejected her grandfather, that man wouldn't have been a good influence. After all if Aria started to see ghouls as things to be killed, Owen would be in trouble.

And learning to read and write, will it really make her stronger? Reading and writing is not something monsters can do, and is also not easy, so maybe?

And then there will be Math and after that a lot of things, just because a pet can't go to school it doesn't mean the feline will be safe from studying.

Aria is a good teacher, she learns something until she masters it and then teachers it to others in ways easy to understand. The cat doesn't understand why, What's the point? But then she is a feline ghoul, not an Elf girl.

Owen has picked the failed arrowheads in a bag and the ones she did right in another bag. But she won't go back with Aria just yet.

She just rests outside enjoying the warmth of the sun instead.

And that's when the cat sees it, a small creature. A little girl the size of her paw, who wearing a white dress that looks like it's made of flower petals, a Spirit. And a earth one since she has the same color as dirt, even in her hair and eyes, because she is literally made of dirt.

Owen moves her right paw slighty, making colorful soap bubbles float in the air. She made them so they would last, but they still just soap bubbles.

The spirit looks at them with child like wonder and claps her hands.

After a while the bubbles finally pop one after another and the spirit claps her hands again.

Is easy to please small children because for them a lot of things are new and wonderful, even if those small children are Spirits.

The Spirit gives Owen a hug, then sinks into the Earth and disappears.

****

Owen thinks that maybe she should have pretended that she couldn't see the Spirit, like normal cats can't.

Because now the earth Spirit is annoying her. Is not much, just following her anywhere and begging for tricks. Young Spirits don't talk, but they can give very convincing looks.

And then she thinks, isn't metal part of earth? So the feline decides to make it a trade, she makes tricks and the little spirits makes the arrowheads stronger. Aria seems scared of the Spirit, so she avoids the cat when she is with the Spirit, so that does mean less work for her.

The improved arrowheads still give Owen the same trouble to enchant but they are stronger. She could use the Spirit to make armor stronger and swords shaper, but this is an Elf village, so is not like others aren't doing it already.

****

Owen befriended a Spirit. She even lets the scary thing ride on her back! I really should not be that scared, she is still a very young earth Spirit so her power is quite limited.

'Aria, how can you become a Monster Hunter if a small Spirit scares you?'

That's right, I need to... get near her. Is not like Owen will let the Spirit kill me, right?

A hundred years old and I am scared of a a child that means me no harm, that won't do.

So I take small breaths, count to ten and wash my face, then I go to make the kind of tea earth spirits like, with lots of sugar because she is young.

And despite the fact that I fear horrible things happening to me the child loves it and gives me a hug.

And then I faint.

****

Is this.. the power of a Spirit? My pet cat never fainted when the Spirit hugged her, even when it was for the first time.

No, this is... different. Why did I faint then, is this when I finally learn something important? Is this when a misterious voice tells me why I got reincarnated as an Elf? And where I am?

I feels like being inside water, yet I can't see anything or hear anything. But the smell... it smells like dirt, like grass, like flowers, like tree bark.

Then... I see light, everything looks so big and... is that Owen? And she is doing magic? Is this a memory from the Earth Spirit?

Strange.

I then wake up in my bed, that was a very strange dream. The spirit looks at me in worry, it looks like it has been crying, with tears made of dirt. I smile and pat it in the head.

"Is okay, I just saw the world as you see it for a moment."

I don't know exactly what happened or why it happened, I don't feel stronger or smarter than before, but now I understand a little more about this Spirit that I did before.

****

"You had a Spirit vision? Strange, that ability is not rare but only those who can use magic can do that. Mmm... I see it must be because your cat can do magic." My mother smiles after saying that and gives me a hug.

"Uh? What?"

"Since Owen is connected to you, and the Earth Spirit befriended Owen, you had a Spirit vision when you tried to be nice to the Spirit and it touched you."

My mother then starts to brush my hair and keeps smiling. Since I am her child, I don't mind, she has been my mother longer than the one I had my previous life.

"Connected? Like... a familiar bond?"

"Yes. If she was a normal cat or even a monster cat nothing would have happened, but since she is a ghoul, this happened."

A familiar can share sences with its master but it seems that since Owen is a ghoul she shared her magic with me instead. But that doesn't mean I can do magic now.

It means my own magic will get mixed with hers, and I will get a few abilities magic users have but without the main one that's using external magic.

In exchange she will also get my magic mixed with her and gain abilities. But since she is a ghoul I have no clue what those will be.

For now both of us won't get much from our bond, but in a few decades? I have no idea. Familiars are usually animals, because monsters are very hard to control and having a magical link with a monster can cause problems.

Yet I got a ghoul to be my pet, is this the reason why my grandfather was interested in me? Did he knew a familar bond would form?

I have no idea.

Ah whatever, time will tell.

AN: If you have been paying attention, you will have an idea about how the bond formed despite Aria not being a mage.
