This is a quest for Nowhere Stars, a dark magical girl series that takes inspiration from, well, magical girl stories and messed-up visual novels. It's still ongoing, I just decided to start this because I wanted to. Don't consider this to be canonical in any capacity, and I highly recommend reading the base material.
If you don't want to, that's also fine. Here's a basic run-down.
In this quest, you are playing as a Harbinger- the "monster of the week." Think something's like Madoka's Witches, but full-fledged characters in their own right. In general, they attempt to consume and spread themselves. They aren't necessarily evil per say, many actually just want to help people, but the problem is that their "help" can include "flaying people alive because skin is a barrier to people connecting."
It is the duty of the Keepers, ie the magical girls, to kill and consume the Harbingers to fuel their Emergence, keeping the city of New Claris uneaten as a by-product. I mean, most probably consider the "keeping the city safe" to be a priority but I digress.
Both Keepers and Harbingers use magic, warping reality to suit the nature of their souls.
There's a bit more to it, but honestly that's all you really need to know for this quest! There's definitely some plot twists and stuff, especially regarding how the afterlife works, but that only really matters if you get yourself killed!
