Not Quite Lovecraft

I hate to say it, but I have lost track of the arguments for the votes >>

As I understood it initially, @_brightwing was arguing for pursuing a lead in his original set of two votes. From my perspective, we are more likely to waste time than pick a useful option out of the three or so ideas. Therefore, I argued that we should spend money, at the risk of tipping off the cult, to get more information on all possible options while we personally follow-up on not a lead to the cult directly but the person most likely to be an ally.

I also assessed that in past votes, no matter how many options we lay out in a plan, there's usually only 2 or 3 'events' that happen before the opponent gets a turn. As such, I argued that talking to Emily was not a useful one of those actions at this stage. This was in the expectation that in the next turn we'd have more information and therefore we'd be less likely to 'waste' an event by spending it on talking to Emily without enough details to result in a successful conversation with her. Brightwing convinced me otherwise, and I edited the plan accordingly.

Does that make sense? Am I even responding to the right topic?

I agreed essentially with everything Tascion proposed, and went along with their better plan. But with the addition of the Emily conversation since we're still in the dream segment - to conclude the scene narratively. And then move on to the investigation.

I find it funny that the first thing we are doing is the magical version of conference call tech support. "Hey Emily are your speakers working? Your video doesn't seem to be turned on and we can't hear you."

Anyway if the situation is what happened in Peru writ large, then the solution seems the same. We find out the various points of origin, and then seal them away or otherwise neutralize them. Easiser said then done of course, but it is good to have a goal.

On the matter of how many "actions" we get before our enemies respond I think it is less a matter of votes, and more of time. One of the things we struggle with sometimes is just how must time span our votes cover. It can be a few seconds of conversation, or it can be a few months of dedicated effort.
So if we want to make sure we get as much done as we can, we should focus on high impact/low time things to do.

As for the Spider Wasp plan, hmm. I like the goals, though hiring investigators seems to be a bit of a risk. I guess as long as we keep them away from anything supernatural, and make sure they are discrete?
It could be dangerous if information on what we are looking for gets out.

Anyway just brainstorming some other leads we could go after. We could check in with the police investigation and see if it made any progress. It has been at least a week after all.
At the very least it could tell us if there have been other incidents of this sort. The sort of people who murder someone in a hotel room with knives, I doubt this is the first time they have done so. Perhaps there are other people they have killed, and that might tell us something.

Second is, maybe the deep ones know something? I'm not suggesting we get in contact with them now. As it might be risky. But if our enemies are doing some sort of magic out on the water, those that dwell below may have noticed.

So the only change I would make to the plan, is rather then personally perusing the Erica lead, we check in with the police investigation. The cultists with knives are the most immediate threat to Jackson, and if we can track them down it may give us a thread to pull.

Like so:

[x] Plan Spider wasp 2
-[X] Turn to Emily's presence, working the dream colours of shape and your memory of her form to anchor her so she might speak. What did she think about all this?
-[X] Hire investigators (Assuming Jackson or his notes can't answer the questions. Try to keep it discrete)
--[X] to look through old gossip rags, interview local reporters, and that sort of thing around the Carlyle estate. Get the behavior of the estate on a timeline
--[X] to look into records of Doctor Robert Houston
--[X] to look for information about Silas N'Kwane in Emmerson Imports.
--[x] To look into Erica if she's not here, try to find out who her friends are that are here.
-[X] Personally check in on the police investigation on the attack on Jackson.

This course of action is also sound. We should be careful. I like it when votes are carefully deliberated between all of us like this.

Spider wasp 2 is a fine plan, I think. I'd prefer pursuing Erica directly though.

The point about Jackson's safety does resonate with me. Still, I think I'll not change my mind.

I think once we find a concrete avenue to pursue (Erica or a campaign member) the thread would want to enter into the cult story arc proper. We have kinda spent quite a few updates on research, but making a good decision before committing to something like travel is important. We would want Oliver to meaningfully make a difference.

Putting Together a Team
OOC: have to say I am amused that you all decided to hire a team of investigators. Like one would do for employing a team of players in Call of Cthulhu

You reached out to Emily's presence in the dream to pull her forward. It rapidly became clear why Emily hadn't manifested herself: she was not human here. Her hair burned into the sky, and eyes surrounded them. A beautiful corpse stared at them with galaxies laid out before her. Jackson looked badly shocked by the sight, clinging desperately to his sanity.

"Emily," you greeted her. You smiled gently at your friend. She smiled back, a crack in reality that opened to impossibilities. "What do you make of this?"

She hummed thoughtfully before speaking, her words settling deep into your bones to be carried for the rest of your days. "There are many greater beings out there. Not all view us kindly. Tread with care, for there may be holes." She gave a wide smile. "Fertilizer for the garden is welcome."

There was a lot you needed to look into. You couldn't be everywhere at once, so you reached out to a relatively new private detective agency and hired them to do some groundwork for you. You wanted everything they could get on the Carlyle estate leading up to present day, Doctor Robert Houston's records, and anything that could be found on Emerson Imports and the connection with Silas N'Kwane.

Learning about Erica Carlyle was thankfully easy. She was often in the society papers, and busy running the Carlyle businesses. She was a success, lauded for her heroic salvaging of her family's business and quick wit. She was highly fashionable, and a woman of means that any would wish to be closer to. She stood firmly against the black mark her brother had left with his years of excess.

Better Jackson get the shocks out of the way before dealing with the real dangers I guess. Thankfully this was while he was dreaming so he'd have sanity buffer. I did remember her eye aura form, but her galaxy form is something else - magnificent. Emily is so much powerful than we realise and eldritch.

Oliver might have failed a humanity check maybe and forgo making a dream construct shape from his human memory of her. It is established he now forgets things like that sometimes.

I'm thinking high society party. That could be an interesting bit of subterfuge. Unless we wanted to try something else?

Society Party
Society had moved on from its open fascination with the strange and unusual. You were still an established artist, and easily able to find an invitation to one of the parties Erica Carlyle would be at. People didn't ask you about what inspired you these days, no, instead it was why you would choose such a bizarre art style, and compliments on how handsome you were.

[ ]It felt strange to be complimented for a glamour hiding your true self
[ ]It filled you with pride to be complimented on your skill for glamouring yourself
[ ]It left you pleasantly nostalgic for your original human appearance, something to look back on but not miss

You caught sight of Erica speaking with a couple other ladies. There was a sharpness to her eyes that was appealing, enhanced by her beautiful frame and stylish dress.

[ ]Approach and ask to speak in private

[ ]Ask to dance
[ ]Tell her her brother's alive

We created the glamour. It being enjoyed seems rightly a source of pleasure and/or pride. We don't know Erica yet, so I don't want to spring on her that her brother is alive. I think we should play slightly coy, for the first few minutes at least. Let's see how well her sharp eyes can note our features. Perhaps she might tip her hand as to interests and goals.

I like the idea of the slow approach.

Actually yeah, why not this. It's also a really good outlook for Oliver to have for the future. I'm fine with him taking pride in his skills as well. But this seems to have more gravitas for Oliver.
