So, I've basically gotten a wild, crackpot theory going on here, that Absalom Careful-Stepper is the Primordial Steelfather, who was cursed in Ancient Times to Walk the Earth forever as punishment for the betrayal of his father and kin, and that at some point during his travels, he passed through the Norse Lands--and they went 'THAT'S FUCKING COOL! I WANT SOME OF THAT'. And because the Norse people are insane gremlins, they succeeded, but missed the whole point that it was a Curse, not a blessing.

Also, another theory that the Jotnar are just our local manifestation of the Sea People who are Chaos trying to reset everything back to Zero. This is twice now that they've emerged from the Sea, and it was commenting on how the Sea will swallow everything at some point.

And I think IF mentioned at one point that the final fate of Steelfathers is to be swallowed by the Sea as well.

Who is careful stepper?

One of The Biggest Legends. A Steelfather that Blackhand knows and respects the hell out of despite his normal blistering hate for them (And the only one that doesn't have some kind of Mitigating Factor as far as we know. Ironjaw apparently managed to become a Steelfather without taking on the Curse of Steel, and the Matron gets a nod of recognition for being a woman who got there). He's also the only Steelfather that's never killed him, I think.

It is your duty and you will not be made a liar.

Not today, not ever.
Hm.... why would you use that here, i wonder?
Find joy in Valhalla, for I shall see you with tales to tell."
Oh.... Guess we gonna visit Valhalla in a later life then.

Fucking Jutons.... we wasn't even at sea!

So, how about getting the kids and non combatants to the ships by the weakest warriors, with the stronger ones shielding them?
No idea if we should help Careful-Stepper. Like, Can we, in any way that won't cause him problems?

That's a pretty cool theory. Just a theory...A GA

Edit: Is Ironjaw an Odr cultivator or is he specifically not?

Our people should get back to the boat ASAP, but I kinda want personally would like to help pitch in with the fight here, even if we're objectively out of our weight class.

Other than that... I'm sort of at a loss in terms of specific strategies here for beating a hastier retreat? We don't have a lot of abilities that are great for evacuating a large group of people.

Helping distract one of the Jotnar whilst everyone runs, then GTFOing ourself might be the only way we can make a substantive difference over just telling everyone to leg it.

Blackhand said he would have had difficulty fighting a single Jotun, so I'm guessing the answer is a resounding no
I think you are mixing up regular giants and Jotun. A regular giant would be difficult for us to face, a Jotun is on the same level as the Vanir and Aesir, which is far beyond us.

Edit: This is what Blackhand told us last time we faced Heklr
'I'm sorry this is happening, but we can, if we play our cards right, come out of this on top. We can't win a contest of arms against a Jotun, you simply are not there yet, but Jotnar can't help but accept an issued challenge. Beat him in a contest and we'll go free. If you don't think there's a way, then just give him the food.'

[X] Plan: Our Duty to the Living
-[X] Trigger Banish the Night with Fight of Our Lives. Use a Rewrite to apply the full bonus dice to everyone.
-[X] This is not a battle in our league, trust Careful-Stepper to defeat the foe, our duty is to survive. Get everyone together, get on the Ship, and Go, using the buffs as required to hasten the loading/rowing/so forth.
-[X] Remain on standby to intercept any stray attacks that come our way and coordinate the evacuation. Use Sailwind and other Tricks as required to hasten the escape and guard against stray attacks or pot-shots of opportunity, spending freely to bolster our defenses. If another Rewrite is required at some point to hedge our bets, don't be shy about using it.
-[X] If one of the Jotnar tries to do a Thunder Run, use Thermic Reckoning to discourage them. Our job is to escape, not to fight here. Our duty is to our family and our fellow travelers, not violence today.

These guys are jotun. not giants.

If these assholes were giants they would be equal in power to 10th decade knight and we wouldn't have had to engage him in a riddle duel.

i gotta sleep, so good luck with the planning.

Some ideas though:
We need obstacles between us and the Jotnars/Jotuns.
the stronger warriors should make up the rear guard, blocking any incoming attacks.
Weakest should carry/protect the noncombatants.
Middle should form a protective circle around the weakest, who knows what tricks the Jotnars/Jotuns will use.
@Imperial Fister any terrain/furry information relevant for planning?
Can we eyetalk with Absalom?
"Hey, Blackhand, what do you remember, how do Absalom fights?"

Good luck!

Wait, are you suggesting we'd use Thermic Reckoning on our own people if they try and help Careful-Stepper?

...Pretty sure that'd just outright kill or horrifically burn and mortally wound essentially everyone here? It's a Finale, not a the kind of attack you use to discourage people.

No, I'm suggesting one of the Jotnar trying to get around Careful-Stepper to take a run on us. But I'll be clearer out of an abundance of caution.

Yeah that was my initial assumption, but the wording is kind of hard to parse, and the bit where it goes on to talk about our duty to escape and not engage in violence etc. etc. made me then think it was talking about us as the referent. Apologies for the confusion.

Yeah, I've edited it to be more clear, it's basically us shooting artillery if one of the Jotnar tries to disengage with Careful-Stepper to come at us. I wouldn't count on Thermic Reckoning to kill them, but it'd certainly have a shot at deterring them long enough for Careful-Stepper to react. And it has the range and activation speed to have a shot at triggering before they can kill us all.

Would it be nid to escape?

Not if you're clearly outmatched.

Drengskapr isn't a suicide pact.

Nobody in the planet is going to say you're dishonorable for withdrawing from Five Fucking Jotnar trying to bushwhack you. Refuting that is simplicity in itself without even getting into violence.

Yeah no biggie. Thermic Reckoning is definitely our best bet in terms of things we can use as a snap reaction.

[X] Plan: Our Duty to the Living

I'm a little reluctant to burn a Rewrite here when we might not even need it on the thing it's being burned on, but maybe better safe than sorry applies and I'm on board with the rest of it.

Not the time to be stingy when this place is about to have an echo of Blackhand's Last Stand. I'd rather use it and not need it rather than save it and find out it could have avoided calamity.
