While it is true to an extent that male characters have a wider range of apparent age in anime... that is largely limited to graying hair and the occasional scar which you'll not that some female characters have as well as the fact that women are perfectly capable in real life of using hair dye.

But regardless of gender skin is unlikely to sag, characters are still fit, and muscles are not shown to have weakened. This is largely due to the art style but also because people of Asian descent tend to look much the same throughout their lives until they suddenly look old.

Huh. I want to say that the tension just disappeared without any reason whatsoever, but it seems that Henry is merely a wet noodle.

A nights sleep can do much to ease anger and frustration. Also, to be fair Henry did state that he had already expected the betrothal. He may not like it and is frustrated at his family for agreeing to it but he does understand the reasons behind it. Also that it was the wishes of Royalty, which is not something him or his family can just reject at a whim.

"You will do as your father and I say, Henry," Karin clicked her tongue against her teeth. "And that is final. Now, since it appears you are tired from your return, I suggest you go back to your room and rest. Tomorrow morning, I will see to it that you are properly educated in the finer arts of keeping control of your emotions."
I clenched my fists, and then turned sharply on my heels to walk out of the room.

This wasn't over.

This wasn't over by a long shot.
Well Fuck You Too You Stone Cold Bitch. Your a fucking failure as a mother I hope you realize? Just thought you should know you god damn Golem.

You may call your anime-shenanigans, but the fact remains:

Karin is old for the standards of the time, where 60-70 is the norm of life she has left to live.

Though with access to the top-rate healing potions that have kept her sickly younger daughter alive and considering that she's in great physical condition, I'd definitely bet on the 70+ end of that range.

This is in an era of early-to-mid renaissance or at least late medieval, so therefore most people including the nobility have an incredibly different set of standards than our modernist point of view.

But besides that, Karin is a Military Woman through and through, she earned her position as much as marrying into it. She doesn't want her children to coast through life, she wants them to soar and expand and what they were given.

and the spikes can perforate metal two to three inches thick
Such bullshit.
"Mother," I answered back, holding on to the saddle with both hands, "the Zerbst border is that way, isn't it?" I asked as I pointed in the direction of the Zerbst border, and then I gave hasty pat on the back of the manticore, who took off immediately in the direction of my choosing.
That's certainly a Code Red scenario for Karin.

If she was just stern or disciplinary I could understand that. My father was in the Navy for 20 years so I'm well aware of how strict and rule abiding military parents can be.

That does NOT excuse the fact that she rules her entire house with a Iron Fist more suited for a Mind Broken Emiya then a normal person. Her obsession, and I do call it a obsession, with maintaining absolute control of oneself, even in the most private of family gatherings, is nothing less then ridiculous and unreasonable.

Her blatant disregard for the feelings of her family, when it comes to her decisions for them, is fucking abusive as hell. Louise, little whip the shit out of the poor bastard who's everything just got ripped away by me, is so fucking terrified of Karin in canon that she almost suffers a heart attack/goes into shock from the mere prospect of having to return home to meet her.

If your own child is so scared of you, that she would literally rather fight in a war then come home to meet you, then your a fucking failure as a parent.

Chapter Thirty

"Go, go, go, go!" I yelled to the manticore's ears. "I got you, mother! I got you! You fell for it! Ahahahahahah!" the next second, my laughter became a quite quick oh shit.

Karin the heavy wind was literally breaking the sound barrier. I realized it when the soft popping sound I heard made the windows rattle as she abruptly turned from an interception course to an outright I am going to catch you, and then we will have words.
You know, that kind of reminds me of this scene from FFXIV

I suspect she's more along the lines of 'high middle aged' for nobility though. 60-70 is probably what a layperson is likely to make it to with access to low-level water magic healing. Since Karin is high-level nobility, I suspect she would have access to quite high level water magic healing, and thus may well have a life expectancy well in excess of the norm.

I think people are really exaggerating how unreasonable Karin is. Yeah, arranged marriages are kind of inherently shitty, but the political situation does demand it, and to decline such an offer would cost the Valleries deeply. She forgave his outburst, and just the fact he feels comfortable pressing her buttons with stuff like the Zerbst joke shows that she's not really out of touch.

She's a very emotional person who tries to control those emotions as much as possible, and while that has its drawbacks, her motives for doing so aren't unfounded.

"You did not speak out of turn Henry," Karin said, her voice softening as she shook her head lightly. "I acknowledge you thought about it, and I may even accept your displeasure towards it, but you are betrothed to marry the future Queen of Gallia. To speak ill of such a fate, even in jest, even in passing, even when you think you are among trusted people-that is folly, Henry. I cannot make you change your mind, and I will not try. You might one day come to like your future wife, and if not love, at least tollerate her, but keep your thoughts to yourself."

"Are you saying I shouldn't trust anyone about my thoughts?" I pointed out. "Not even my family?"

"I am saying that Eleonore is my eldest, my most precious daughter-but she too makes mistakes. Some mistakes, they can be solved easily with the wave of a wand. Other mistakes, they bring about great pain to all those involved. When you speak ill of royalty, you speak ill of the Founder," Karin's eyes softened up, her smile slightly bitter on her face. "To protect my family, even if I need to be harsh, even if I need to be unjust, then I will gladly accept it."

It's a persuasive argument.

And so, your very modern viewpoint of how parents should act shines through. Must I direct you to, for example, manuals from the 16th century wherein a man keeping his family in fear of him through the use of beatings were written, sanctioned and distributed by the church? Karin isn't particularly bad, and really doesn't deserve all the hate she gets.

Just because it's in line with the times doesn't mean it's okay. But I'm going to stop now. I don't want to be draw into this more then I already have and I can feel the other people approaching with more "This was okay 3-4 hundred years ago so it's okay it's happening now" shit. Karin is a shitty and emotionally abusive mother in my opinion, it's not going to change, let's drop it.

Well this is just flat out wrong. Louise didn't want to go home before fighting in the war because she knew BOTH her parents would be against it and forbid her from going. She wanted to fight for Henrietta not because she was afraid of Karin... point of fact, Karin actually abstained from voicing her opinion on the matter and let Pierre shut Louise down by himself (he puts her under house arrest).

The one time Louise was seriously afraid of her mother's discipline happened after she returned from breaking out of prison to commit several felonies. Not only illegal, but also risked started a war with Gallia. She was scared because she knew she fucked up big time.

Where the hell did all the tension from the previous chapter go? It felt kinda like a cop-out that most of it is gone with no one lashing out. The bonding time felt kinda forced too. I was hoping for a verbal fight (because a magical one would end up horribly).
