AND I can confirm that the original creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, will be back to take on the live action. THIS IS WHAT WE'VE BEEN TRAINING FOR ALL THESE YEARS

Live-Action 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Series Coming to Netflix | Hollywood Reporter

Key points:
  • Konietzko and DiMartino are "taking the reins" for the series.
  • It will have a "culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast."
  • The series is a "retelling" but will "go even deeper into the characters, story, action and world-building."
  • It will start production in 2019 and be a Netflix exclusive.

Article:
A live-action series based on Nickelodeon's beloved cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender is in development at Netflix, the streaming service announced.

The show will be "reimagined," according to Netflix. Original creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are signed on to executive produce and run the series, with production to start in 2019. Attached to a tweet from preview account See What's Next is a single piece of concept art by artist John Staub; it features the giant sky bison Appa with a tiny human we can only assume is Aang, our airbending hero.

Considering how well the last one went and how well Netflix rebooted Reboot I have no words for how low my hopes are.

Damn you for being seconds faster than me. :mob:

But yeah I have no really hope at netflix doing a good children's live action show much less one that is action heavy.

I hope this succeeds not so much as that I think its a good idea to have a Live action but so that it can wipe away the shame of the Abominable Dread Lord Shaylaman.

Because that worked so well the first time.

I can't say that a remake of the original series was ever something I hoped to see but I guess if they approach it from a different lens it could be an interesting companion piece...? Though the art and animation are huge parts of my love for A:TLA so it'll be weird not to have that.

The apparent lack of Aaron Ehasz is also reason for tempered enthusiasm IMO.

No thanks.

Between the dumpsterfire Korra turned into, creators returning to their old best thing years later never turning out well, and the beautiful 2D animation needing to be replaced with discount CGI garbage, I have zero faith that this will be good enough to justify its own existence.

But Netflix has such a good track record of this exact thing so far.

I'm actually cautiously optimistic. It's being made by the same folks as the original, so barring any diasaster mid production it'll probably be vaguely disappointing at worst.

What you talking about? Avatar Legend of Korra was a very good show from start to finish.

I will freaking defend Korra to the death but no. It was a good but problematic show. Season 2 was a mess, later part of Season 1 was a mess. The series needed more episodes per season and needed more connections between seasons.

What is needed was just for the creators not to think they were getting canceled every single season. If the network had actually not keep scaring the shit out of them then plenty of the pacing issues wouldn't have come about.

The thing with Korra was that it was written originally as a 5 episode miniseries that got extended. They had no real plan for the show passed season 1 and it wasn't until season 3 that they actually got it together to make a full show. Compared to Avatar the Last Airbender which was planed more or less from day one.

As for this I don't really see the need. What will being live action bring to the table? The only possible benefit is that they aren't going to be bound by being on Nick and can get things into the show that were banned before, but even that is at best a minimal gain.

Season 2 wasn't as bad as some claim, the only bad thing is Asami being underused in that season IMO, and in later seasons with Varrick not being a villain like he should've been IMO as I never liked the character.

And in regards to this planned live action show. I'm sure people would rather see both shows continued in animation form on Netflix.

Oh God, this is awful. I lost faith in these two after Korra (without Aaron they just couldn't live up to ATLA) and quite frankly ATLA doesnt need a reboot, it was pretty much perfect. Would much rather a jew avatar series.

On the bright side, the Dragon Prince is very promising

I honestly can't say I have strong feelings on this. I'll probably check it out out of curiosity, but the original still more than holds up IMO
Though at least if it does turn out decent it'll be a better alternative to the Shamylan film. They better follow up on their promise with the casting.

What I don't get is that working on the assumption that they didn't want to have a new story set in the Avatar World, why ATLA? Like I love Korra as a show and even enjoy it more than ATLA but even I can admit that it'd greatly benefit from having a second run at things. If they were going to remake anything why not remake the show that actually had a lot of stumbling blocks put in front of it and ended being hurt by a lack of cohesive direction? ATLA doesn't need a remake, Korra would actually be better for it.
