"And then, and then, after she'd absorbed that beam! Whee, fuuua! And she shot it right back!"
You accompany your statement with gestures and hand-waving, stretching up on your toes to express
precisely how awesome you found Akane's final fight. It was amazing! And awesome! And - um, amazi-awesome? At any rate, the movie was absolutely brilliant! You can't stop smiling, imagining yourself in Akane's place as Vivid Red. The best thing is, it isn't completely impossible! A few bystanders on the sidewalk next to the cinema look at you in amusement, though.
"There there," Arisa says, and pats your head. "You really liked it, didn't you?"
Arisa is Arisa Bannings, your best friend. She's rich, but she doesn't let that go to her head. Her real name is actually A-li-ce, but you can't pronounce that - even she can't pronounce that - so just like everyone else you call her Arisa. She's lived in Japan almost all her life, arriving with her parents when she was only two years old, but you only met her a year ago when she was bullying Suzuka-chan. You put an end to that, and then all three of you somehow became friends.
"Of course I did! It was amazi-awesome!" You say, pumping a fist in the air.
"- Hee." A sound as from a half-strangled laugh. You quickly look at Suzuka, who's covering her mouth and silently shaking.
"Uuu," you complain, puffing out your cheeks and pouting.
Tsukimura Suzuka, also your best friend. She's a little younger than you, just like Arisa is a little older, but all three of you are in the same class, and that's just how you like it. She's even richer than Arisa - her parents are engineers, her sister Shinobu is training to be an engineer, and Suzuka also wants to be an engineer. You aren't quite sure what engineers do, only that it involves a lot of math. Suzuka and you regularly fight over the first-place spot in your grade level for math scores, so you guess she'll probably do well.
Suzuka glances sidelong at you and your pout, then she quickly looks away and her shaking intensifies.
She's usually quiet, and you and Arisa often have to practically drag her if you want to get her away from her books, but she shouldn't be quiet like
this! You look at Arisa, and the two of you nod at each other. One, two, three -
You step behind Suzuka. Arisa grabs her left arm, you grab her right (by the shoulder, since she's still covering her mouth), then before Suzuka has a chance to realise what's happening you're both tickling her for all you're worth. She immediately stiffens, but that just makes it easier.
"No - Ari - Nano - No, stop it, don't -"
The two of you redouble your efforts, and before long Suzuka is laughing so hard she'd be falling over if you weren't holding her up. That lasts until, gasping, she manages to reach back and clasp one cool hand around your neck, and shortly afterwards you're howling right along with her.
Arisa's valiant efforts fail to hold up both her friends. She ends up on top.

"Ah, geez, what were you thinking? On a public sidewalk, even!"
"Sorry." "Sorry."
Arisa and you are sitting on the grassy strip where the road used to be before Uminari put in a modern subway system. Both of you are bowing, in a fashion that could be called formal if your silly grins didn't belie the notion, but Suzuka's own unreserved smile reassures you that she isn't upset. It's nice to see her letting her emotions out.
You decide to explain why you did it. "But I saw you laughing, and then you held it in! Don't
do that, Suzuka!"
"But that was because -" Suzuka pauses. "Um, I didn't want you to think I was laughing at you, but I guess I was laughing at you."
You pout again, playfully. "I'm hurt, Suzuka-chan," you say, even adding a suffix to let her know you're
really hurt. Suzuka won't believe a bit of it.
"Well, I just -" She pokes her fingers together. "The movie was good, but it wasn't nearly as much fun as watching your reactions when we were watching it. Um, you know you weren't sitting still for even a minute, right?"
Arisa snickers. "That's true. You really like magical girl stories, don't you Nanoha?"
You blink at them. Er, well… it's true, you do like them, but that's not really why…
You lean back and stretch your legs outwards, looking up into the blue sky. Explaining this will be hard, and harder because you don't want to give anything away.
"- That's not it," you say. "I mean, I do like them, but I like Akane's story more. It isn't just because she's a magical girl - I mean, without the magic - it's because she's
real. What happened in the movie might be fake, but Akane and Aoi actually exist, and it isn't completely unthinkable for me to meet them one day. I could get on a train
right now, and I'd be on the same island as them in a few hours - I mean, I know I wouldn't actually be allowed to meet them, or get close to the manifestation engine, but in principle -"
You're babbling, and Arisa is looking suspiciously at you. Stop.
"You know you can't actually become like them, right?" Arisa says. "I wasn't involved when they got connected - I mean -"
"Because you're nine," Suzuka and you chorus. It's a familiar refrain, used whenever Arisa chooses to share a tidbit she's overheard at home. You lean towards her, gleefully anticipating this one - anything that has to do with Akane is worth remembering.
"Er, right." Arisa looks a little off balance. "But I mean - Mom and Dad had long discussions about what should be done with them, and they worked extra hours for weeks after their first appearance. I'm not sure, but I think even this movie was part of it - and Akane
definitely wasn't supposed to be the first Vivid user. She isn't that much older than us, you know?"
You frown. That's right, the company Arisa's parents work for do PR for the one that runs the manifestation engine. A lot of people in Uminari are connected to that one, one way or the other, but you don't quite see the connection - sure, Akane and Aoi use it for power, but so does everyone and everything.
"Fourteen is pretty old…" Suzuka says. "Arisa is right, though. Did I ever tell you, I actually met Akane once?"
"Get out of here." "You did?"
"Uh-huh," Suzuka says, blushing lightly. "Mom had to visit the engine complex for a meeting, and Dad was already on a business trip, so she let me go with her. Well, "meeting" might be an exaggeration. We were in the same room for a while, but Akane was talking to Aoi and I didn't dare say anything, so… um, yeah…"
"Oh, is that what happened," Arisa says, flopping onto her back. She sounds disappointed, but you inch closer to Suzuka with stars in your eyes.
"You were actually in the same room as her! What was she like? And Aoi?"
"Well, um…" Suzuka averts her gaze, and you belatedly realise you've almost crept onto her skirt. You hastily scoot backwards a bit. "She was… nice, I guess? Bored, I think, because they'd been there for hours, but really chatty. Aoi didn't talk much. I could tell that they were friendly, though… honestly, I was only there for ten minutes…"
That sounded almost like Arisa and Suzuka, didn't it? You guess it's a common enough pattern, and it's pretty much what they showed in the movie.
"I almost wish you did have a chance to be one." Arisa laughs lightly, now lying on one side with her head braced against her hand. "Today's Nanoha is especially energetic. Not that you aren't usually, but right now you're a little… more. Suzuka's right, you're a lot of fun when you're like this. Why aren't you usually?"
Well, that's because…
"Not that you have to tell me," she hastily continues. You realise your face had stiffened a little. "Well! The movie was good, but I'm kinda glad all of that stuff never really happened. That crow thing… I like the universe, I don't want it destroyed." She sticks out her tongue, trying to lighten your mood. You let her, but you're still a little shaken.
Suzuka starts smoothing out her clothes, then nods at Arisa.
"Maybe we should start walking home?" She says. "I think Shinobu said something about cake, want to come visit?"
You nod absently, half of your mind on Arisa's question.
Why is it that you can't be this way all the time, and sometimes feel like you're just going through the motions? Arisa is right, you were imagining yourself in Akane's place. The analogy isn't perfect, because Akane enjoyed her life even before becoming Vivid Red - not that you don't, really! - but becoming Red gave her purpose, and you sometimes feel like you're adrift without any idea of what to do.
The excitement, adventures and friendship didn't hurt either. Suzuka and Arisa are
your best friends, not vice versa - they like each other better than they like you, even if they still like you. They have plans, and destinies, and you're just plain Nanoha.
"Hey, let's run!"
Arisa grabs your hand along with Suzuka's, pulling you to your feet, and shortly afterwards the three of you are running home beneath the springtime sun.
The cake is good.
