"And then, and then, after she'd absorbed that beam! Whee, fuuua! And she shot it right back!"

You accompany your statement with gestures and hand-waving, stretching up on your toes to express precisely how awesome you found Akane's final fight. It was amazing! And awesome! And - um, amazi-awesome? At any rate, the movie was absolutely brilliant! You can't stop smiling, imagining yourself in Akane's place as Vivid Red. The best thing is, it isn't completely impossible! A few bystanders on the sidewalk next to the cinema look at you in amusement, though.

"There there," Arisa says, and pats your head. "You really liked it, didn't you?"

Arisa is Arisa Bannings, your best friend. She's rich, but she doesn't let that go to her head. Her real name is actually A-li-ce, but you can't pronounce that - even she can't pronounce that - so just like everyone else you call her Arisa. She's lived in Japan almost all her life, arriving with her parents when she was only two years old, but you only met her a year ago when she was bullying Suzuka-chan. You put an end to that, and then all three of you somehow became friends.

"Of course I did! It was amazi-awesome!" You say, pumping a fist in the air.

"- Hee." A sound as from a half-strangled laugh. You quickly look at Suzuka, who's covering her mouth and silently shaking.

"Uuu," you complain, puffing out your cheeks and pouting.

Tsukimura Suzuka, also your best friend. She's a little younger than you, just like Arisa is a little older, but all three of you are in the same class, and that's just how you like it. She's even richer than Arisa - her parents are engineers, her sister Shinobu is training to be an engineer, and Suzuka also wants to be an engineer. You aren't quite sure what engineers do, only that it involves a lot of math. Suzuka and you regularly fight over the first-place spot in your grade level for math scores, so you guess she'll probably do well.

Suzuka glances sidelong at you and your pout, then she quickly looks away and her shaking intensifies.

She's usually quiet, and you and Arisa often have to practically drag her if you want to get her away from her books, but she shouldn't be quiet like this! You look at Arisa, and the two of you nod at each other. One, two, three -

You step behind Suzuka. Arisa grabs her left arm, you grab her right (by the shoulder, since she's still covering her mouth), then before Suzuka has a chance to realise what's happening you're both tickling her for all you're worth. She immediately stiffens, but that just makes it easier.

"No - Ari - Nano - No, stop it, don't -"

The two of you redouble your efforts, and before long Suzuka is laughing so hard she'd be falling over if you weren't holding her up. That lasts until, gasping, she manages to reach back and clasp one cool hand around your neck, and shortly afterwards you're howling right along with her.

Arisa's valiant efforts fail to hold up both her friends. She ends up on top.

"Ah, geez, what were you thinking? On a public sidewalk, even!"

"Sorry." "Sorry."

Arisa and you are sitting on the grassy strip where the road used to be before Uminari put in a modern subway system. Both of you are bowing, in a fashion that could be called formal if your silly grins didn't belie the notion, but Suzuka's own unreserved smile reassures you that she isn't upset. It's nice to see her letting her emotions out.

You decide to explain why you did it. "But I saw you laughing, and then you held it in! Don't do that, Suzuka!"

"But that was because -" Suzuka pauses. "Um, I didn't want you to think I was laughing at you, but I guess I was laughing at you."

You pout again, playfully. "I'm hurt, Suzuka-chan," you say, even adding a suffix to let her know you're really hurt. Suzuka won't believe a bit of it.

"Well, I just -" She pokes her fingers together. "The movie was good, but it wasn't nearly as much fun as watching your reactions when we were watching it. Um, you know you weren't sitting still for even a minute, right?"

Arisa snickers. "That's true. You really like magical girl stories, don't you Nanoha?"

You blink at them. Er, well… it's true, you do like them, but that's not really why…

You lean back and stretch your legs outwards, looking up into the blue sky. Explaining this will be hard, and harder because you don't want to give anything away.

"- That's not it," you say. "I mean, I do like them, but I like Akane's story more. It isn't just because she's a magical girl - I mean, without the magic - it's because she's real. What happened in the movie might be fake, but Akane and Aoi actually exist, and it isn't completely unthinkable for me to meet them one day. I could get on a train right now, and I'd be on the same island as them in a few hours - I mean, I know I wouldn't actually be allowed to meet them, or get close to the manifestation engine, but in principle -"

You're babbling, and Arisa is looking suspiciously at you. Stop.

"You know you can't actually become like them, right?" Arisa says. "I wasn't involved when they got connected - I mean -"

"Because you're nine," Suzuka and you chorus. It's a familiar refrain, used whenever Arisa chooses to share a tidbit she's overheard at home. You lean towards her, gleefully anticipating this one - anything that has to do with Akane is worth remembering.

"Er, right." Arisa looks a little off balance. "But I mean - Mom and Dad had long discussions about what should be done with them, and they worked extra hours for weeks after their first appearance. I'm not sure, but I think even this movie was part of it - and Akane definitely wasn't supposed to be the first Vivid user. She isn't that much older than us, you know?"

You frown. That's right, the company Arisa's parents work for do PR for the one that runs the manifestation engine. A lot of people in Uminari are connected to that one, one way or the other, but you don't quite see the connection - sure, Akane and Aoi use it for power, but so does everyone and everything.

"Fourteen is pretty old…" Suzuka says. "Arisa is right, though. Did I ever tell you, I actually met Akane once?"

"Get out of here." "You did?"

"Uh-huh," Suzuka says, blushing lightly. "Mom had to visit the engine complex for a meeting, and Dad was already on a business trip, so she let me go with her. Well, "meeting" might be an exaggeration. We were in the same room for a while, but Akane was talking to Aoi and I didn't dare say anything, so… um, yeah…"

"Oh, is that what happened," Arisa says, flopping onto her back. She sounds disappointed, but you inch closer to Suzuka with stars in your eyes.

"You were actually in the same room as her! What was she like? And Aoi?"

"Well, um…" Suzuka averts her gaze, and you belatedly realise you've almost crept onto her skirt. You hastily scoot backwards a bit. "She was… nice, I guess? Bored, I think, because they'd been there for hours, but really chatty. Aoi didn't talk much. I could tell that they were friendly, though… honestly, I was only there for ten minutes…"

That sounded almost like Arisa and Suzuka, didn't it? You guess it's a common enough pattern, and it's pretty much what they showed in the movie.

"I almost wish you did have a chance to be one." Arisa laughs lightly, now lying on one side with her head braced against her hand. "Today's Nanoha is especially energetic. Not that you aren't usually, but right now you're a little… more. Suzuka's right, you're a lot of fun when you're like this. Why aren't you usually?"

Well, that's because…

"Not that you have to tell me," she hastily continues. You realise your face had stiffened a little. "Well! The movie was good, but I'm kinda glad all of that stuff never really happened. That crow thing… I like the universe, I don't want it destroyed." She sticks out her tongue, trying to lighten your mood. You let her, but you're still a little shaken.

Suzuka starts smoothing out her clothes, then nods at Arisa.

"Maybe we should start walking home?" She says. "I think Shinobu said something about cake, want to come visit?"

You nod absently, half of your mind on Arisa's question.

Why is it that you can't be this way all the time, and sometimes feel like you're just going through the motions? Arisa is right, you were imagining yourself in Akane's place. The analogy isn't perfect, because Akane enjoyed her life even before becoming Vivid Red - not that you don't, really! - but becoming Red gave her purpose, and you sometimes feel like you're adrift without any idea of what to do.

The excitement, adventures and friendship didn't hurt either. Suzuka and Arisa are your best friends, not vice versa - they like each other better than they like you, even if they still like you. They have plans, and destinies, and you're just plain Nanoha.

"Hey, let's run!"

Arisa grabs your hand along with Suzuka's, pulling you to your feet, and shortly afterwards the three of you are running home beneath the springtime sun.

The cake is good.

"Ah, this way!" Arisa grins at the two of you, then skips off the sidewalk onto a forested path. "This is a shortcut, we'll get to cram school faster through here. Sorry, the footing is a little poorer though."

You blink. No kidding, Arisa. The dirt is trampled flat, and it's wide enough to walk on, but it's very much the forest path - roots stretch across the path, mingling tightly enough that you could probably walk a kilometre without ever touching the ground. That might be fun, though~

Then your eyes widen, as you take in the entire picture. The path is almost identical to your nightmare from last night, making it come back in full strength. How could you have forgotten?

A monster made all of shadows, moving oddly -
Hurt, panicked, running as fast as you can but never getting away -
Squeezing between trees where it can't pass, then collapsing -

You shiver, hurrying to catch up. No way, right?

———————
"Help me -"

You stop, clutching your head. For just a moment the omnipresent background noise turned into a voice, then it's back to being noise.

"Nanoha?"

You force it to the back of your mind. Suzuka is looking at you with concern. You shake your head. "Sorry, I -"

"Please help me -"

Your legs quiver. The voice on its own isn't so bad, but it forces you to pay attention to the noise, and it hurts. You rapidly shake your head, trying to tell where it's coming from so you can get away. Please, anything but this - you've been out of the hospital for four years, you don't want to go back -

"Anyone who can hear this, please help me!"

It hurts so much -

"Nanoha!"

Absently, you realise that Suzuka is holding you; she probably caught you just as you were falling over. The voice was coming from somewhere over - that direction -

[ ] Ask Suzuka to get you away from here
[ ] Ask Arisa to search for - someone else is also hurt -
[ ] Force yourself to your feet (And then?)
[ ] Write-in

So, this happened. I couldn't stop myself, but I'm already running a different quest, and it has first priority. As such, you can expect updates to be irregular and/or un-proofread, though probably fairly sizeable; I expect this one to be on the small side. This will quite likely mean >1 week between updates, though possibly not for the next three since I'll temporarily have a lot of extra time.

Rules of engagement are the usual:
- Votes will get interpreted and mangled according to the protagonist's personality.
- Extra details and/or write-ins will increase your luck stat, although not enough to override bad choices.
- I may choose to ignore any blatantly bad ideas.
- More attention is likely to mean faster updates. My ego hungers. C&C is also nice.

Bauuuughhhn, what are you doing, Vividred is so skeevy.

Please let this not be taking away from Shards :(

Which is why I almost completely rewrote it. The real-world series is kind of a movie in here. The setting is otherwise superficially the same, though it's gotten a Nanoha-compatibility overhaul; of course, there's no evil superdimensional crow-thing. Also Akane's friends were mostly made-up, except for Aoi who's still there.

It will not. This is strictly extra writing.

Oops, did I steal your story title? Sorry, I really didn't mean to...

Um. In repayment, have some bonus backstory: Nanoha is in quite a lot of pain right now. This isn't random happenstance, and it isn't precisely Yuuno's fault either. She was in fact hospitalised for several months, a few years ago, but they never discovered a cause and she eventually recovered.

I have no idea what Vividred even is, and yes I tried reading it (I think I just WTF!?'d the whole thing), so I can't really predict how the x-over affects it, but I'm going to guess her body can't handle channeling magic, or at least not in the amounts she has?

[X] force yourself to your feet and follow the voice.
How is this a choice? Will Nanoha believe herself to be hallucinating if we go with Plan Nope?
Also, what's a Vividred, for someone whose first impression of the name was to think it had to do with that story about Nanoha's adopted daughter that I haven't watched?

Grrrrrr... Alisa Bannings, damn it! Not Arisa. She is NOT Japanese.

You shouldn't watch Vividred Operation.

It's... Honestly pretty terrible IMO.

Strike Witches lack of pants coupled with mediocre worldbuilding. About the only good thing about it IMO is the Cute Mascot is actually the main girl's (I think he was a grandfather or an uncle?) who transplanted his brain into a ferret by accident, and they had to stick his body in a freezer for the duration of the series until he could put himself back in. I watched the first episode or two before giving it up for dead.

... Umm. They actually make a point of it that her name is Alice and they just can't pronounce it IC.
1. I kinda blanked out after Pet Peeve.
2. It's Arisa and not Arisu anyway even with mispronunciation.

I'm trying to find out how the crossover might be affecting this quest without doing so. :)

If it helps, the premise of Vividred is that they created a kind of ultimate power called I believe a Manifestation Engine. Something powerful enough that just one very large installation can power the entire planet with a clean power source. (At what I assume is rather low prices at that, nothing like massive profit to get everyone to chip in after all)

All the tech behind it is thought up by the grandfather of Akane, who was mentioned in story. In any case, he then links her to the Manifestation Engine, turning her in to a technological Magical Girl with vast amounts of power to back her up. This was not entirely what the authorities would normally allow, but hey, her grandfather had backdoors in the tech and nobody could stop him. (Mwahahahahaa!) ((Frankly in some ways he seems a bit like Jail, albeit perhaps a good deal less bloodthirsty.... I worry they would get along))

After that it's kind of a magical girl story, where they fight off alien entities from another dimension, that are seemingly trying to destroy the manifestation engine. Etc etc, explosions happen, etc etc. Turns out you can merge magical girls together to get a new unison like super powerful girl. Who has some of the characteristics of both.

------

If any of the above sounds familiar, it's because Nanoha has many of the same concepts, the biggest difference is really that in one it's all pure tech ultimately and in the other magic is involved.

As a fun side point, the story is a bit in the future and I believe military tech has advanced a bit, like the ships having beam weapons. And seemingly the F-35 or a look alike becoming a big success. There is also some kind of WMD which I'm guessing is based on the Manifestations Engines physics, and is considered substantially more scary then a nuke. Not sure what it does, but it might have extra dimensional features to it.

Also her grand father seems to have developed some kind of practical anti-gravity device that he installed in to a hover bike he gave to his grand daughter. As well as inflatable technology, which he put in his grand daughters clothing... and yeah, I guess he dotes on her in extreme amounts. Clearly he thinks the answer to all his grand daughters problems is more super advanced technology.

------

So as a background, welcome to future Earth, much like old Earth, but with some new and impressive toys. I wonder if the TSAB can ignore them quite so easily as they did Earth canonically...

Yay! Backstory!

I was wondering about the title, yes. ^_^;

I tried to watch it a while back, but I didn't get past episode 2. Far more blatant fanservice then I was willing to live with.

So, Earth has its own magitech, said magitech is unhealthy for powerful mages in some way, and Nanoha is going to look even more gay than in canon. Though the latter should probably remain irrelevant for about a decade so we don't get purged by the mods.

Bluntly? Yes. Yuuno would probably die, which would certainly affect the plot. You might not think that a very good option, but it's still an option...

Oh, right, and I offered three choices to start you off.

Nope, still sounds like 'Arisu'. Wiki says you're right, though.

Yep, thanks for the write-up.

Basically, this. The Vividred plot is kind of bad, but the setting itself is interesting - especially in combination with Nanoha.

So I turned the plot into a in-universe movie, but kept the setting. I may have altered it a bit to better account for the extra decades of development and such, mind you; unlike the anime, the Manifestation Engine isn't the only difference from our world, though it's probably the one the TSAB would find scariest. Some Vividred characters still exist - Akane and Aoi, as well as Akane's grandfather, though Nanoha doesn't know about him - while others were made up for the movie and are actors in-universe.

The TSAB won't be able to ignore them as easily. I wonder what they'll do instead?
