Nanoha Ideas, discussion and recs thread

Aleph

Princess of Stabbity
Location
The sixth circle of Hell (second on weekends)
Pronouns
She/Her
I figure we should probably have one of these, too.

Let's start off with an amusing concept I don't think I've seen done before. A fic from Quattro's perspective, filtered through her self-entitlement for humour purposes. Ideally crackfic, set pre-StrikerS and playing "Daily Life with the Doctor" for maximum funny.

Because come on. Daily life with Jail? Seen through Quattro's eyes? With BITTER SIBLING RIVALRIES for his attention (she's a daddy's girl, after all) that may or may not be completely one-sided and/or entirely in her head?

There's no way a competent author could fail to get comedy out of that. : 3

Do Recs go here? Its in the title, so yes, they do (I think)

I'd have to recommend Game Theory by Aleph and Earthscorpion.

Action, Adventure, Great World building.

You.... you are actually reminding us of Ready, Sette, Go? Really? What kind of MONSTER does this???

To borrow a quote from TFF,
the more I dwell on [MGLN], the more I wonder why I bother with this franchise of whom the vast majority of the fans create content that makes me sick to my stomach. My favorite character is a pariah. Pretty much everything that came after A's, with the exception of the Materials is utter crap. And lets top it all off with the fact none of this is ever going to change.

It's truth. I wish it wasn't so, like a lot of truths, but it is a fact nonetheless

Some people remain somewhat upset that Nanoha stopped being 11, joined the army and trains people in how to kick ass on a Sufficiently Advanced alien world while her daughter learns Space Karate.

The problem is that what might have been interesting was botched in execution in various ways. StrikerS has too much cast and shitty pacing, Force has crap antagonists and Vivid is at least 50% pandering.

Although Innocent is pretty fun to read in a "don't think too hard about it" kinda way so it's not everything that came after A's that's terrible.

Got it in one. Don't get me wrong: I love magical girl dakka nanoha, but Yuuno had such potential that was utterly squandered. StrikerS had potential, and I liked a lot of the character introduced (especially Subaru) but the pacing was too goddamn fast, with the writers trying to cram too much into too little a timeframe. Even though they extended it to nearly twice as many episodes of either the first season or As, there was still too much. Either that or it was handled poorly. I have heard several people say that they wanted StrikerS to focus more on the new characters with the titular Nanoha being mostly background. But the story we got focused far too much on Nanoha and Fate.

StrikerS just... it was awful. There are certainly elements you can steal from it, but you can just as easily steal things from any approprate series, and it would take about the same level of work. Despite being set off earth, we left that series not really knowing more about the day to day life in Adminstrated Space then we did before hand, the villains all had Fairy Tail level weak characterization and motivation.

This came after:

  • Precia, who everyone loved to hate.
  • The Wolkenritter, who were very understandable and sympathetic enemies fighting for the ones they loved.
  • Gil Graham, whose actions were understandable and only 'wrong' because of things he couldn't have known before hand.
What we got was
  • Random Brains in a jar with minimal foreshadowing...
  • Attempt to recreate Fate's popularity with innocent clone girl.
  • All the random forgettable cyborgs without personality.
  • The one cyborg WITH personality. Hey, one out of twelve isn't bad!
  • And the most generic Mad Scientist ever. Complete with mad science! Personality not included.

Well, there was at least the basic framework of personality for the cyborgs that a fanfic author could use. Although what was there tended to be rather...flat.

They do get a little more fleshed out in the StrikerS manga, not a lot but still something...

And let us not forget
  • Major character defining events occurring completely off screen in a time skip.
  • A host of unnecessary characters being introduced, rather than using perfectly eligible existing ones.
  • Just... the whole goddamn plot making next to no frikkin' sense.
  • Carim. So utterly redundant that she gets her own mention.
So yeah.

So just saw the Paragon version of Grunt being brought out of his tank for the first time in a while, and it got me thinking.
What if Fate was kind of like that. She had the knowledge but there was no emotional connection.

What, she's a Liminal Exalted?

I'm… hm. Interesting idea.

Precia's abuse might not be as bad, actually. The differences being more blatant might help her accept it. Game Theory, ahoy!

On the other hand, if Precia's abuse is the same, I imagine Fate would not be nearly as driven to help save Alicia. Probably outright hates Precia.

Because the Liminal Exalted who'll be in 3e have that as their whole thing. In other words:

That Was A Joke /EDI

Edit: Actually, as a clone of Alicia with her memories, Fate is closer to the Liminals tha Grunt is.
