Somehow inspired by the Super Crusader Kings? thread, what if, instead of the nuclear bomb and other such wonders of science, countries were possessors of the now real magical/mythological objects (mainly weapons) depicted in legends and tales around the world? Excalibur, Durandal, Ascalon: those artifacts are ranked at the same level of potency as weapons of mass destruction in our world. Countries possessing more than 3 are considered superpowers.
Only restriction: said artifacts must have been wielded by an human (demigods included) in the stories they are mentionned in, divine weapons belonging to gods are off limits, unless said god lent it to a mortal at least once. So no Gungnir, no Mjollnir, and no Zeus' lightning bolts. Everything else is fair game.
I wonder what happens to North America?
