Personality: John is a veteran soldier whose goal is to protect those who can't protect themselves. His goal in fighting for the Earth Federation isn't simply to bring down Zeon: it's to attempt to preserve the peace that blessed both Earth and her colonies for years after the last war. Despite his lofty notions, he is not naive and is a very strong and experienced combatant. He thinks pragmatically, but aims to win battles with the least amount of casualties on either side. The malware he infects other MUs with is often used to artificially force a retreat by making each infected mech flee the battlefield against its pilot's will, both sparing the soldier and knocking them out of the battle. However merciful he may be, even he has a sadistic side, exclusively against truly evil individuals. For example, if a Sons of Zeon commander sends his troops to kill civilians in cold blood or destroy entire colonies, he will not hesitate to kill them, often in the most brutal method possible (e.g. shutting down their life support and locking down their thrusters, leaving them to slowly suffocate in the cold reaches of space, or if he's feeling even more vindictive, sending their mech on a collision course with a nearby star at full tilt). John is a dedicated family man, using his security and escort pay to support his wife and son on the Alpha Seven (also spelled A7) colony. He viciously despises those who start wars or engage in cruel acts unprovoked, and generally views war as an incredible waste of lives and resources that only persists because of humanity's own selfishness. He also despises those who harm innocents, exploit Newtypes, and engage in bigotry. In his spare time, he often can be found watching a movie or playing video games like anyone else. Try to beat him in Alley Brawler 6 and your avatar will be brutalized without mercy.
Backstory:
John was born and raised on the Alpha Seven (A7) space colony, within Lagrange Point L5. Alpha Seven was always a pro-Federation colony, seeing Zeon as aggressors who threatened to overturn years of peace with every successive war. As each successive war tore apart interstellar society, A7 gradually shifted from a pro-Earth colony to a neutral colony, as its war-weary leaders didn't want to send their young men and women to die in battle anymore. John, however, had already been drafted into the Third Neo Zeon War on the Earth Federation side before the colony had shifted its stance. Fighting through the events of Gundam Unicorn, he racked up a high kill count in his ReZEL. He wasn't an especially good pilot, but he had an enormous gift for spacial calculations, which allowed him to pull off advanced maneuvers despite his inexperience. Beam rifle shots always seemed to hit their mark, and he could always find a weakness in an opponent's beam saber style. Little did he know that he was a Newtype, and his gift had been secretly helping him along his career this whole time. As a reward for his kill count, he was given access to a newly-released limited-production ReZEL variant, the ReZEL Hacker-D. As the name implied, its purpose was to hack enemy units to sow chaos within the enemy ranks. It was also outfitted with EMP grenades for its grenade launcher to disable enemy units and even capital ships. After the war ended, he was sent back home to his colony, and found that he could use his ability to kill to help others and his family. Taking up freelance security work, he mostly made a living fending off pirates who attacked civilian merchant ships over the nine years of peace, sending his pay home to his wife and son back on Alpha Seven.
All was well, for a time. However, when he came home one day after an assignment, he found his colony under attack by Sons of Zeon members. It turned out that a radical cell of the SoZ wanted to "make an example" of the technically-neutral-but-still-sympathetic-to-Earth Alpha Seven, to show what would happen to "traitor colonies." When he arrived in his personal transport ship, the ReZEL Hacker-D onboard, he was aghast to see his colony in ruins. Homes were destroyed, crop fields were incinerated, and entire cities were reduced to rubble. Getting inside his ReZEL, he soon came across the perpetrators: a squad of Sons of Zeon mobile suits, holding the capital city hostage unless its leaders agreed to surrender or shift their allegiance to Zeon.
The Zeon terrorists hoplessly outnumbered John, and with the ReZEL Hacker-D having seen better days, his death was all but certain. But it seemed they didn't realize what the Hacker-D could do. All John needed to do to win was to delay them long enough to gain access to their systems using a Remote Access Trojan. He forced the squad to kneel before him, explaining that he was going to trigger their Auto-Retreat function and spare their lives. True to his words, the subordinate mechs fled automatically. But the commander's mech stayed. John then explained to the terrified Zeon commander that he was going to perform a hard shutdown of his MS, locking him inside with the life support off. He would have about two hours of air in the cockpit, and it would be up to the people of the colony he just attacked to free him from his metal prison or let him die for his actions against their people. Of course, he also explained how to open up the mech from the outside. After about an hour and a half of deliberation, it was decided that the poor man would be freed and given to the Earth Federation to as a prisoner of war.
Naturally, Alpha Seven then became a staunch Earth Federation ally, seeing as they were now targeted by pro-Zeon forces and the Earth Federation was their best chance of protection. After learning that his wife and son had been killed as part of the Zeon squad's rampage, John rejoined the Earth Federation army as a private contractor, eager to see the war over and having very few skills other than combat.
