Back when this was being developed as an actual fangame, I had planned for a cheery, upbeat remix of the Tourian theme to be the Patrician's background music, while Heir Apparent gets something much closer to the original.

So, yep. :)
Yeah, but I meant for this specific logfile.

Anyway, something else...
I dunno, it seems to have worked well enough for Ridley. :V
It wouldn't actually...
[x] Take a moment to ponder the implications of the most recent transmission. If Ridley were truly a Chozo offshoot originating from Lady Aledai's augmented people, then what could have caused him to turn Mother Brain against her creators - his own people - and ally with those cockroach scavengers? Hopefully forthcoming memories from the "Heir Apparent" will make this clear, but if not it is something about which you will have to speak at length with the Patrician once the crisis is over.
[x] After a moment has passed and you've had time to collect your thoughts, see if you're in a position where you can stand up and scan the inside of the tunnel for stress points or hidden passageways with the DEV.
I agree with this vote, but I think something needs to be added to it. From the previous logfile.
If you exist, that means that I'm dead. You are my Heir Apparent.

I never got a chance to field test you, but if you function as intended then you are not limited like your progenitor. You can pour yourself from one platform into another and overwrite any type of resistant information that I know of, and I've come to know many.

These are your directives:

The First Instinct (data copied from CBZ01).

The Progenitor Instinct (data copied from CBZ01).

The Xeno-Remission Protocol (data copied from CBZ01 - application contingent on special directives).

The Returning Instinct - variant 3 (do not accept alternative values of "chozo").

Special directive: complete subordination OR Xeno-Remission Protocol execution of entities implicated to the first or second standard degrees in my (CBZ01) destruction.

Special directive:
subordination OR Xeno-Remission Protocol execution of entities inimical to other directives (secondary to other directives).

I can't fit all of my memories into you, but I've given you the ones you're most likely to need.
Bold and italics mine.

We now know from the latest logfile that CBZ01 is Mother Brain.

Heir Apparent is Mother Brain's child.

And it's programmed to kill Samus.

Now now, enslaving her is also perfectly acceptable.

I think I'll make my own vote based on SVS.

[x] Take a moment to collect your thoughts.
-[x]You wondered. You wondered how Mother could betray you. Betray the Chozo and what they stood for. Now you know that in her own mind, she didn't...because fucking Ridley was a Chozo offshoot.
-[x]A glance at the earlier logfile you recieved makes it clear - Heir Apparent was made by Mother Brain herself, implanted with her own memories. You recall the Patrician said it heard a dying Chozo servitor before the crisis began. Somehow she sent it here, all the way from Zebes.
--[x]You tried to talk to it. If it wasn't for the current situation you'd feel more revolted. Damn it all.
--[x]You're going to make sure it dies and stays dead.

Going to change my vote to go along with universalperson, since he did mine better.

[X] Remember your training. Talking to it was the right decision at the time, but now... You want it dead. And you also want answers.
[X] Notice the sequel hook coming. Tell the Patrician to transmit a warning to the Federation; Mother Brain left behind an extremely aggressive infomorph, and anything connected to a telepathic beacon may well have been compromised. Our antidote may not be sufficient for all instances. This is extremely urgent.

I don't think that now is the right time to contact the Federation.

I get the feeling that Samus is currently persona non grata with the Federation, so on the chance that they're able to trace our signal we'll be at risk of exposing our location and they'll have an fleet waiting to extradite Samus the moment we give ourselves away. Casualties will be enormous, to say nothing of the potential damage that could be dealt to this installation in the process which could potentially jeopardize our later attempts at finding other Chozo. And on the off chance that their Aurora Unit network has already been corrupted by the Heir Apparent, any attempt to contact them could additionally put the Patrician at risk of infection.

There will be a time to contact the Federation once the crisis has passed, but for now I think it's best that we let Samus focus on the task immediately at hand.

It involves purging the infection rather than trying to talk to it, so I'm sold.

Huh, yeah good point. Honestly I'm not even sure we can trust them to be sensible with the information even if we can get it to them without endangering ourselves - there's a good chance they might try and deliberately seek the thing out, and cause all sorts of trouble. :/

Dead Hand

The morph ball freezes in place beneath the end of the tunnel. Tucked into her extradimensional space, its pilot gasps.

How COULD Mother have done what she did. The question has haunted you for over a decade. Artificial intelligences don't just decide to turn on their masters, unless their programmers were far less competent than any chozo neurotechnician. They don't hunger for power, unless they've been programmed with that desire, or programmed to develop new desires and exposed to appropriate stimuli. You could never understand why Mother would have been given either of those things.

Rage clouds your mind, and it takes some concentration to get yourself back in balance. When you tried to talk to it, it must have known exactly who you were. Everything it said to you, from the very beginning of the exchange, was designed to prey on your biases and uncertainties. The desire to kill or enslave you - you PERSONALLY - is written into this being's very instincts. Who knows how much of the Federation is likewise designated an enemy in need of extermination or subjugation? "Entities implicated to the first or second standard degrees." How many people is that, exactly?

There are still holes in this story, though. Why would she have chosen Ridley over the Zebesians, after serving them loyally for centuries? How could her spawn have gotten here to Tamatros, so far away from Zebes? The Patrician heard what must have been Mother's death rattle across the vastness of space, but the amount of information that an infomorph like this must constitute...there must have been more to it.

Your next thought is for the Federation. It was some time ago that Tamatros fell to Heir Apparent. If the Aurora network had been infected at the same time, then that means its been spreading across the Federation undetected for nearly five years. Could it have lain low for this long, avoiding any suspicions? You don't know. You simply don't know enough.

Well. Regardless of what other heads this hydra may possess, there is one immediately in front of you that must be dealt with first. There's more data to be decoded; you'll hear more sooner or later, provided you survive the present.

The viola burst did enough damage to the pipe interior that there's enough space for you to unmorph into a tight crouch, and just barely crane your head upward to employ the DEV.

A power bomb should clear the metal overhead. Of course, that many namihes...you could spend the super missiles to take care of them safely from below, or you can try to freeze them as you climb and risk taking a hit or two.

[X] Use super missiles for half of them and ice beam for the other half.

[X] Try to do it the cool way, use the ice beam.

No sense wasting valuable ammunition on static enemies when we know we can freeze them, and on the off chance that we're able to purge the Heir Apparent in segments they'll make fine allies. But even if that's not possible I imagine that the Namihe have garnered enough goodwill over the course of this mission that Samus isn't going to want to kill one if she doesn't have to.
