Matter of Faith (BTVS / OC)

Man, kinda wish we didn't tell Faith to meet us at noon. It's not like we can walk around in full armor then.

Oh well. Guess the truth was going to come out sooner or later. And she probably does know it's us... Unless our armor masks our voice with that awesome holy reverb that some holy people have.

Training Vitality for stress relief will be a single training roll. Success gives a point. Failure gives nothing. It will reduce stress by one.
So, do we get stress relief from only training vitality? Or can we get it from other stuff like training Dexterity?

The place is deserted enough that you can walk around in armor without issue. Also, there is a voice reverb with the armor, Astral just can't tell when he's using it.

Basically when you are working out for fun you are just doing standard drills that Astral likes and finds good for him. Training other things would require more uncomfortable setups.

Yea. So it's just vitality then? Alright.
[X] Work on your Vitality to relieve some stress.
-[X] Then, at noon, meet Faith as promised

I can't find any complaints with this option.

Wouldn't Faith's watcher be worry about this? I mean just douchebag in armor just came out of nowhere and gored two vampires

[X] Work on your Vitality to relieve some stress
[X] Head to the church early and summon your armor. No need to reveal your identity hey.

in my mind a watcher is the guy in the cafe who watches other customers or passerby, while the stalker tracks you and activity follows you around. I've always felt that a watcher is more passive. Given the council's practices they should be called the council of stalkers rather then the watchers council.

they send people to be integrated into the lives of the potentials and eventually move or control them. In the first episode Buffy finds Giles in the bronze, watching her outside of school and faith is about to move in with hers. I'm not saying it can't be an improvement faith's current housing sucks, and they can come to care about the slayer. i think Diana was Faith's watcher and treated her well but Kendra was pretty messed up.
one of my problems is when someone says watcher i think Highlander before Buffy.

The next day you wake up sore and in a small amount of pain from the fighting the previous night. In retrospect it had been one of the most harrowing events in your life. Fighting against two supernatural creatures twice as strong as you, and determined to slay you. A normal person would have died like that girl laying in the rain had.

You eat breakfast and put it out of your mind. You're not one to overthink things. You won, and saved someone. That's enough.

Today before you head out to meet Faith you're going to be doing a few of the more exotic exercises you've been taught. You do a fair amount of weightlifting as training, but it's far from the only thing you do. Cardio is just as important. And another thing that's not always taken into account. Flexibility.

You know a few simply forms for that. Still technically muscle training, but it's best for relieving stress and making certain your bulk doesn't become hindering. It's akin to Yoga, but it's not as focused on the flexibility aspects of it. Soothing though, and leaves you feeling energetic and works out a lot of the stiffness you still feel. Which is the point of it.

That done, you head out towards where you specified you were going to meet Faith. You debate on how to handle this as you walk. Part of you wants to deal with this by keeping her safe and out of this aspect. But in the end who are you to say? Your skills work best with an ally assisting you as well, and in the end if you are careful you can even prevent her from dying. Though you shudder at that implication should you fail that greatly.

You ponder perhaps more than you should as you summon your armor and enter the meeting spot. Your early by at least an hour, so it's empty at the moment. You want to think instead.

But you end up thinking of nothing and everything. Watching the sunlight wash through the windows of the empty warehouse and just being present in the moment. Thoughts escape you for that timeless moment. The sun rises higher and higher, and eventually the door creeks open just a bit as Faith worms her way in. The door's so heavy that she can do little more than that really, and that's because you left it open just a bit for her.

"Huh." She pauses as she sees you. "You're actually here."

"Yes." You inhale and exhale, and reach up to pull off the helmet. "Hello Faith."

The girl tilts her head at you. "You know, I should have seen it, but that helmet makes you echo, and I didn't think you for a killer."

"Those were vampires." You state in objection, and then tilt your head as you think. "That doesn't count I think?"

"Eh, doesn't matter to me much." The brunette shrugs in reply and sets a bag down in front of her. "They want to take a bite out of people, they are fair game." She reaches down and unzips it, and then pulls out a small handcrossbow. "I think a few girls I knew were bit by that large bastard you dusted. He would come around and hit on me. Creepy dude with a young kink."

You are suddenly very glad you killed him. "Glad I got him."

"That's the spirit!" Faith pulls out a few bolts and cocks the crossbow. "Ok Diana let's me use the fun stuff she has, but she's going to be pissed if I'm not careful, and I like her enough to listen a bit."

"Diana?" You watch the proceedings with curiosity.

"Yeah, the lady who's working on that whole adoption and scholarship thing." Faith finishes and loads up the bolts. "She's a history buff with a lot of old shit in that dinky little flat she has. Really cool. Nothing like that hammer you can use, but I figure this can go pow pow once I get good on aiming it."

The girl gets to her feet and shows it off. Your a bit amused to note that she's very deliberately aiming it away from you. You've never actually seen a crossbow before. This one looks interesting too. "Are those wood arrows?"

"Called bolts apparently." The girl steps forward to show you. "Diana called it a bunch of words, and ended with repeating crossbow. You load it up, and it can fire six of them before you need to redo. Actually pretty wicked."

You poke at the bolts in question and gently take one out. You knowledge is only what the book and the light have given you, and it's sparse indeed, but this doesn't look like the standard ammo. "Don't they usually have metal tips?"

"No idea." Faith shrugs. "One second." She points the weapon into the air and walks back to the bag. A bit of tugging reveals as foam target that she sets down against the wall.

A few seconds later the crossbow is firing into the target. Or trying to. Two of the six hit. The rest hit the wall of the warehouse with a thunk and bounce off. You hide any amusement as Faith huffs.

"She made it look so easy." The girl mutters in annoyance, and begins to move forward. "Don't suppose you have some sort of magic shit too? Or is it just the armor and the hammer?"

You frown in thought. You don't know really. You might be able to do something maybe? The feel of the armor spell in your head makes you think you can't really do that for someone else. But the weapon spell, that one might be useful. "Lemmie try something."

Faith looks at you as you move forward and summon your favorite hammer to your hand. You hand it to her, and she almost immediately staggers under the weight and tilts dangerously. "Oh f--..." Her swear cuts off as you grab at her to keep her stable.

The crossbow drops out of her hand and your heart stops as you look down. Fortunately it seems a bit less hair trigger than you thought, and it stays put. "Sorry, that's what I like."

"Daintly little girl here remember." The girl states dryly as you take the hammer from her.

"Yeah, sorry." You frown and focus as you summon a smaller and thinner long hammer. "Here."

It's still heavy based on how she's holding it, but Faith seems able to move it at least. "Don't know how you can heft that bigass one."

"Musclehead remember." You state flatly.

"Yep." Faith gently moves the crossbow to the side and waves the hammer around. "Nice though. Can you do pointy stuff too?"

You frown in thought, and focus again. The spell you're using gives you the feel that it's capable of that, you think. You hold out your hand and focus again. The blob of light that resolves into a weapon isn't exactly what you had in mind. "Sort of?"

Faith laughs at the metal bar in your hand. "Looks like one of those nerf swords you can buy."

"It's metal, but yeah." You wave the bar around and dismiss the spell. "Let me try again."

Your next try is better, but still bad, and you're getting low on magic. Your third try does a simple sword though. It's not sharp, but it's recognizably a sword. Faith immediately grabs it and looks it over.

"Now this is more like it." The girl rubs at the edge. "Though really it wouldn't work on vampires for me. Still cool."

"Yeah." You give a shrug. "Practice on shooting?" You look at the crossbow on the ground. "That will last the day, but you'd need me nearby."

"Hmm." Faith looks crossbow on the ground. "Could you do bolts? Your magic shit made the vamps smoke right? What would happen if I stuck them with it?"

You look down an the weapon as well and wince. "One item at a time." You mutter. "And I got a limited amount of magic to use it for."

"Eh, was an idea." The brunette waves it off and stands up. "So, when you gonna go hunting vampires next?"

"No idea?" You wince at the flat look she gives you. "Nearly got beat down by two vampires. What if they roam like in five or six? I need train a bit before I really get going. Just got this stuff, feeling it out." You look down at your armored hands.

Faith gives you a long look. "All right, I can buy that. I'm going to work on shooting. I want to be able to hit the heart right. But you tell me when you head out. Otherwise..." The girl trails off meaningfully.

You give a long sigh. "All right."

The rest of the day is done fooling around a bit more with your skills, and then heading home. Faith seems bound and determined to force herself onto helping you.

I'm thinking we ask for a quest now?
We've got one stress, think it best we do that when we're able.
That sound ok to people?

Also, this was funny.

(That said...
A Slayer with a Light-created item would be pretty damn awesome...)

By the way, Faith has been added to allies, and Paladin has had a new addition. You know vampire weaknesses now, so on combat rolls of 100 or higher they will go dusty.

[X] Train your summon weapon skill

As if we are going to be working with Faith here, we might as well make sure we have a weapon ready for her use next time.

Plus, the better we get at this skill, the more deadly our own hammer can be.

If we want Faith to be badass, we should consider taking another quest, competing it and then get Blessing of Might.
Because that buff would be pretty useful for anyone.

You know. Even though I knew it was probably going to happen. Still think it's a shame we revealed ourselves to Faith so early.

Could have played up the ole lone demon hunter getting hounded by a young inquisitive squire aspect.

Especially since I can imagine this scene so clearly.

Faith grunts a bit, squeezing into the small gap of the empty warehouse that the Paladin designated, hoping he kept his promise. Stumbling a bit as the pressure of the opening lets her through. When she finally turns her eyes inside, the sun shines through the warehouse windows, motes of dust floating about through the empty room. A Timeless feeling seems to permeate the air, and sitting on a box within the warehouse sits the Paladin, weapon by his side.

Surprised that he actually kept his promise. She thought he would lie, just like everyone else.

"Huh." She pauses as she sees him, "You're actually here."

"Yes." He inhales, before continuing "Hello Faith."
