Hopefully it's no surprise that my understanding of player-available info dropped when I became a QM -- now I need to remember not just what actually happened, but what made it on-screen!
By the way, would Hazou generally be aware of performance standards for ninja of each rank and thus be able to gauge XP boundaries for them? Obviously we are high up enough now we can make an educated guess that XP-wise chuunin are ~7.5k, newly minted full jounin ~15k, a strong elite jounin like Asuma (without Enma) maybe ~30k, and an S-rank generally seem to be any elite jounin with S-rank bullshit shinies, but where can we expect the finish line to be, so to speak, with Stagnation mechanics?

In a military-like ninja society people would likely have a general grasp of just how strong other people of each rank are, even if for nothing else than being able to allocate mission resources effectively, if expecting combat to commence. And that correlates strongly with XP totals since most ninja don't have sufficient shinies for a runaway effect. A chuunin should probably be aware how many chuunin like him it would take to match a jounin and how many genin he can take alone at a time, and the same can be applied to jounin vs essie dynamics - such as say a squad of 4 ANBU jounin needing to know if they have any odds of winning a white room fight against a single essie, or not.

So I guess my question is, what are the general guidelines for squads of weaker ninja taking on an essie? Other than "run on sight and hope they can't be bothered". At how many average combat build jounin (18k XP) would a Nara value a typical Akatsuki member in strategic estimations, if they were forced into a white room fight? 4? 16? The relative % XP differences between pyramid tiers grow smaller as ninja get more and more XP, but rolls are based on flat point differences - meaning 60k XP beats 30k XP harder than 30k XP beats 15k XP etc. For example, 60k vs 30k is a gulf just as wide as the difference between a typical chuunin and an elite jounin - and one that would be picked up on, if you are a society of warring ninja warlords.

I just want to make sure we're modelling Essie power as best we can if we ever get into an Akatsuki confrontation, because modelling them at 60k XP each vs 40k XP each, results in them being at a very different power levels which aren't even necessarily in striking range of one another.

This sounds like an interesting question to pose to Shikamaru some time, but not something we'd necessarily know.

I think this is most of what you know, but I'm no expert.
That's what we the players know. But, given that we lived on his estate and that his death inadvertently became relevant to the formation of the KEI, I expect that Hazō either knows the exact date of his death or would have a very easy (speak easy enough to not have to vote to ask someone) time finding it out on a whim.
Personally I don't need an exact date. I wouldn't remember the number given anyway. But I would like context in the timeline. Specifically when it happened compared to the Uchiha massacre and maybe when it happened compared to events of the actual Quest, if it happened that late.

So could the QMs shed any light on that?

Fer the sake of all the things! I got that password out of a random password generator, it was supposed to be military-grade! *sigh* Guess I shouldn't have so much faith in my neighbor's kid's coding skills. :/
Well, there's your problem -- you have a neighbor near enough to know they have a kid. That puts you in wardriving range. I recommend a military bunker.

PSA: Updates to Hazō's Aspects

Hazō's "Promising Seal Student" Aspect has been upgraded to "Out-Touched Sealing Genius", an Aspect which previously saw some amount of approval from the players.

We are considering updating "Team Uplift" and "Open Mouth, Insert Foot" as well, and we're putting it to a vote. (Although, obviously, all Aspects are subject to QM approval.) Options are:

[][TU] Keep Team Uplift
[][TU] <put suggested replacement Aspect here>

and

[][OMIF] Keep Open Mouth, Insert Foot
[][OMIF] <put suggested replacement Aspect here>

NOTE: OMIF is a character flaw in Hazō, making this something of his Trouble Aspect. Replacements must fit in the same slot.

If you are proposing a new Aspect, please offer up a short description of the circumstances where it would apply, both where it would advantage Hazō and where it would disadvantage him. For example, if you wanted to replace 'Open Mouth, Insert Foot' with 'Master Confectioner' (no, this will not actually be allowed), you might put:

[Χ][OMIF] Master Confectioner
Advantage: Hazō's amazing baked goods put everyone in a good mood
Disadvantage: Confectionary is an un-ninjalike art and his fellows look down on him for it

I admit a great deal of reservation regarding "Out Touched Genius." Empathy allows you to discover Aspects, if this gets discovered... well, we were told that Out-Influenced sculptures would not be received well. Unless these sorts of things are common amongst sealmasters and THers?

Maybe something akin to...

"being a research sealmaster inevitably changes you --marks you. Every sealmaster has a touch of... otherness to them. It's never much, and sometimes it's hardly noticeable.

But the good sealmasters? The ones with a catalog of original seals to their name? When they speak about dimensional veils, chthonic resonances, and the Out? It feels, almost, like they're half a step out of reality. Like their eyes are on a horizon only they can see."

[X] [TU] Keep Team Uplift

[X][OMIF] Eyes on the Horizon

Advantage: Hazou has big plans, and even bigger dreams. Invoke to improve plans, to awe others with the scope of your plans, etc.

Disadvantage: Hazou (intentionally or not) neglects the smaller, more mundane things. Like his reputation.

[X][TU] Keep Team Uplift
We keep this.

[X][OMIF] Out of My League
Hazou in tangling in the affairs of demigods and monsters, but is nowhere near their level.
Advantage: performing under ridiculous pressure, facing off with Essies, normal people don't scare me.
Disadvantage: getting into personal conflict with someone that hilariously outclasses Hazou.

[X] [TU] Keep Team Uplift

[X] [OMIF] Problem with Authority
Advantage: Hazou's force of personality is strengthened when defending the downtrodden or resisting the inefficient hierarchies of tradition.
Disadvantage: Sometimes Hazou does not actually know better and the original methods are superior, or, just like in his academy days, his "optimizations" may earn him ire.

I'd like to vote in the following, or attach it to another plan at some point. Please help me improve this.

[](Offscreen) Contingency Planning:
  • We nearly died. We can't leave the world in the lurch if we bite it.
  • Prepare a sealed package to be opened in the event of our death.
    • Entrust the package to Kagome, IFF he promises not to open it early.
    • Name Nobouri as Clan Head
    • Two written copies of everything we know about on PS and ES, for both Kagome and the Tower.
    • A sealed&ciphered letter for Ami, suggesting that she force a Kurosawa to download a summoning scroll. It's weird, but it might pseudo-resurect us.
    • Kagome, we trust you to not dangerously rush necromancy. take the time you need.
      • We'll try to link up with Akane/allies and get to the rift site.
      • Please Seance us. It might help us remember who we were, and what we need to do.
    • Take care of each other, this is not the end.
    • See you soon, we love you <3

Finished last batch of reactions.
"Yūma and I were in a small cavern a couple hundred yards down, fighting a group of armored centipedes," Atomu explained. "He was holding the right flank, keeping three of the creatures back while I dealt with the first one. One of them lunged forward onto his spear, weighing it down just long enough that another got close before either of us could respond. It bit him in the calf and yanked his feet out from under him, causing him to drop his spear as he fell. He thrashed for a moment and then went stiff as a board, so I think the bite was likely poisoned. I was already closely engaged and could not break loose to recover him." The final words came out in a pained voice that every ninja who had ever served in the field knew. "The centipede dragged him out of sight, leaving me dealing with the one I had been fighting plus the survivor of the ones he had been handling."
Couple hundred yards down. Calf wound from centipede. Hallucinating or disoriented from poison?
"Is anyone else seeing more of those violet flickers?" Cangue asked suddenly, cutting across the sibling snidery. "Or smelling them? They smell...sharp. Nasty. Like rotted flesh burning."
The fire has a smell? What does it mean for the finished seal if it draws its power from the same source as the failure?
The team was halfway to their destination, at least two hundred yards underground, jogging along a rough tear in the stone that trended steeply downwards. Steeply enough that it was necessary to control your speed carefully or you would find yourself accelerating and eventually fall over. It was wide enough that they could travel three abreast, the summons who couldn't actually die on the outside in a ring around the humans.
First shades fought at half the depth of the centipede encounter.
"I see them," Hazō said. "I've been watching them for the last minute or so and I think they're gathering."
Shades took time to form at this depth.
Noburi's Water Whip flicked over Hazō's shoulder and wrapped around the shade's throat. Noburi anchored himself to the floor with chakra and pulled, powerful muscles sheathed in ninja magic yanking the shadow off its feet and across the battle to slam into the other remaining shadow, driving them both into the far wall where they exploded into mist.

Hazō crouched, gasping for air in the cloying, oppressive wetness of the miasma, as he checked the party by eye.

Noburi stood, tall and proud, Whip in hand, head on a swivel as he guarded his family. All he needed was a sunset behind and a skull under his foot and he would have been a painting from older and more heroic times.
Fan art bait. God, Noburi is fantastic. A virtuoso. Acing the Tsunade school of "this fucker is a full time doctor?"
"Here," Hazō said, holding out a trio of tags to his sister. "These are some of the Fourth's seals that I've been working on. They make a massive chakra construct. It doesn't do anything and it disperses after a few seconds, but it might act like a physical object to them. It's also slow to spin up, about three-quarters of a second."
Oh! Sadly, these did not suck up the miasma, Ghostbusters style. Shows we need every damage type seals.
Five minutes farther on, they were attacked by Ken, Bosatsu, and Mirai. The three genin were still genin and Team Uplift were now hardened warriors with support from the terrifyingly skilled Yuno and Satsuko. They cut through the phantoms like soft cheese, barely slowing down in the process. Kei didn't even have time to attack before the enemy were all dead.
No gathering wisps, no warning. Time pressure to rescue our friend introduces much more danger to the mission. No time to corral a weak phantom for tests or other precautions.
Noburi's Water Whip struck like a snake, slicing through the air in a strike that would carve the enemy's head neatly from top of spine to front of forehead if it landed, just like the Wakahisa clan master had taught so many years ago. The corpse warrior's wakazashi lashed out to slice the whip away, just as it had before, but Noburi was no longer the inexperienced genin of years past. He twisted his wrist and his Whip coiled, spinning around the cut-parry and continuing on. A split second later, the back of the shade's head hit the ground; another instant and the body went to its knees, then to the ground, and then puffed away.

"That was incredibly satisfying," Noburi muttered as he went to his wife's aid.
Say that again. Show me a Toad that could do better. Toad tongue kata vs Water Whip 2023.
"I should have been able to pull him completely off his feet!" Kei said. "Had I actually practiced, had I spent any time whatsoever training the gift of the pangolins properly, the way a decent Summoner should have, I would have been able to—"

"Stop," Hazō said. "You're spiraling. I need you to hold it together until we're off the field, and then we'll tell you how amazing you are and to stop beating yourself up. Can you do that?"
Remember to do this.
"You guys tanked all the damage," Noburi said, running medical-green hands down Yuno's body with a doctor's professionalism that still left her blushing like a house afire. "I didn't even manage to get close."
This axe murderer is too cute.
"All kinds!" Honoka said. "She has all the elements and she learned everything that the clan has to teach because she's really smart and works very hard. She learned the Bile of the Ocean Demons from Aunty Mari, and the Lightning Bucklers from Uncle Haru, and the Pangolin Conditioning Jutsu"—she paused to raise a finger to her lips. "You can't tell anyone about that one! It's a clan secret."
Adorable! Cutest walking opsec breach. Sorry Kagome.
"What's 'clattery damage'?"

"It's when someone is being really loud and obvious and so they end up killing people they didn't mean to, just because those people were there."
Clatter clatter. Life long tease material. The kind of evergold story you pull out when she brings dates home.
She went around the table, making sure that Lady Mari, Lady Tsunade, Jōnin Tamami, Mr Pawsalmuppugus (a grey cat doll with all the fur loved off, survivor of her less affluent pre-Gōketsu-adoption childhood), and Mrs Thumpbumple (a blobby green doll with too many legs and tails stuck on somewhat randomly), all had tea.
More blackmail. One of the best parts of having kids. They grow up so fast you have to enjoy it while you can.
Honoka bit her lip. "That was Aunty Akane's seat, but she's not here anymore." She let herself feel the pain for a moment and then put a smile back on her face. Life was for living, and she was here with a good and very furry and pettable friend with lovely tea. This was a good time to be happy. "Now, really, please honor me by choosing your own bowl."
:cry::cry::cry:

Has a good support system and resilient at that age. Still heartbreaking. Hope her parents send her to help Akane's mother with chores.
"I would be honored to help," Honoka said politely. She slid the cup to Canodo, using three fingers pressed tightly together, but only the backs of the fingers. It was much easier to apply toxins or drugs with the pads of the fingers, so the backs were used for serving.
Learning so many useful things at school. Good student.
She sipped at her own tea, then set it down and dabbed primly at her lips. "I'm enjoying this tea very much because of your presence," she said, bowing to Canodo. "I hope you are enjoying it as well?"
First date vibes. Rubbing elbows with summons, growing up at the knees of the next Sannin. So rewarding to spoil the hell out of this kid. Uhhhh. Who would she have the most in common with? Anko, Minato or Kakashi?
"Remember how there were hundreds of beasts in the cave when we first started clearing it?" Yuno asked. "The cave looks natural, and the beasts looked like the cave's ordinary inhabitants. I think the flame shades took root in the depths somewhere and pushed the chakra beasts out. That's why we saw so many of the beasts at first, but now there's none of them."
What happened to the slow beasts? Dragged in like Yūma? Traces of their bodies or blood? Yuno killed a bloodless beast.
"Maybe that's it," Hazō said. "Regardless, we're facing the flame shades now, so let's plan to beat them. We're all seeing the same thing, right? These are all ninja that we've seen die. That I've seen die, I suppose."
Seen die is subset of seen. Does this mean something about the seal failure? What happens to people who die in the cave? Is it dragging Yūma in to make him a lich?
The smoke cleared to reveal a fat orange toad wearing a short, garish red cape that went halfway down its back. The toad, who barely came up to Noburi's navel, turned on its summoner.
Cape? Bad timing or fashion statement?
Sorry, Canun, Hazō said mentally, as he substituted with the dog to take himself out of danger – not a moment too soon, his face was smarting and his eyes watering from the flame lash that had nearly seared him. A second pop confirmed Canun's return to the Seventh Path, and Hazō briefly cursed that they hadn't thought to bring elemental clones along as Substitution fodder.
Nice consolation to get combat tips from characters when something goes a little wrong.
Hazō arrived on the Seventh Path, and immediately collapsed as memories from his Shadow Clones training and doing sealing research slammed into him. Thankfully, he had the presence of mind not to fall on his back.
Lucky crossing paths without warning does not make memories harder to absorb. Chakra refill from popped clones can be drained to others.
He immediately regretted it. His back was where the worst of the burns were, but it only felt numb now, while the rest of his body hurt worse than he'd ever felt before.
Was very scared this meant waist down paralysis.
"...and then Yuno and I did this back-and-forth maneuver," Noburi said, "Substituting each other forward and back in the tunnel so that only one of us was ever in range of the shade's attacks. It got a hit on Yuno, but by then I'd re-equipped my Rocket Boots and I blitzed it faster than it could react and destroyed it with my Water Whip."
Wonder if we could have controlled the encounters with zoning. One zone line of sight is challenging. After Daizen, send clones a zone ahead with seals. Careful not to splat Yūma. Or a water clone with Surging Seas if no damage ninjutsu do something.
"What happened?" Hazō asked. It had been a couple minutes, and he was slowly pulling himself back together (no thanks to Canodo, who had needed many explanations from Hazō to understand that no, puppy licks wouldn't actually make him heal faster, and yes, Noburi's burn salve may have tasted good, but that didn't mean that it was safe for Canodo to eat).
Gossip fodder for the next tea party.
"He's down there!" Noburi said in an excited whisper. "He's alive. He's low on chakra… really low. I think something's draining him. We need to get him out of there."
Drain? Test with animals at shallower depth. Research antidrain seals for pure lands?
Yuno dropped something – Yūma's body, Noburi realized – and yelled "Run!" before twisting around the shade's arms with her full, unburdened speed. She sprinted down the tunnel the way they'd come.
Ughhhh, this is the worst.

"Holy shit," Hazō said. "That was Jōtarō in the well and… Komori?"
In life, escorted tattooed person. Stole Yūma to replay same role?
Dark Miasma - The entire scene gains the Aspect "Dark Miasma", making sight beyond the current Zone nearly impossible. Additionally, deeper in the caves, the miasma thickens, weakening those that have to pass through it. Once per combat, enemies may tag "Dark Miasma" against you.

Everyone must make a Physique check:
  • 19 or less: Temporary Mild Consequence (until leaving Zone with Aspect).
  • 20-39: 2 boxes of stress track filled for the duration.
Scary effect. Feels very dangerous to fight under.
"Makes sense," Hazō said with a sigh. He knew that Noburi was running his hands over Hazō's entire back and sides, but he could only feel the tingling warmth of chakra on his sides and a thin rim around the edges of his back. There was no pain, and no feeling of chakra, in the center of his back.
Yikes.
Three hours later, Hazō was ensconced in a bed at Leaf General Hospital with his senior advisors gathered around. Hazō had wanted to go to his office, Noburi had wanted him to go to Leaf General, and they had compromised by having him go to Leaf General. It was a terrible compromise because one of the participants was happy about the outcome.
Snnnrrk!
"It's touch and go," Noburi admitted. "He lost a hell of a lot of blood and he had some bad internal damage from the poison, plus his calf was almost literally minced. There's good odds that he's still going to die, but at least he's got a chance." He took a breath and let it out slowly, looking at the wall as though he could see through it and down the hall to the operating room where Kon Ai and her team labored over the battered body of Gōketsu Yūma. "They said it helped that I was onhand when Mari brought him out. I did some minimal work to stabilize him, but he was pretty far gone. If he survives, he's going to have a lot of rehab to do, and he might be permanently MSD."
Bittersweet. Hope he lives. He was flexible. And easy to get along with.
ANBU Agent Chevrotain burst through the door. "Sir! Incoming threat! It's—"

A large, calloused hand shoved Chevrotain hard from behind, sending him stumbling deeper into the room. Hidan strolled through the door after him, his three-bladed scythe draped over one shoulder.

"Is that any way to announce a visitor?" he demanded. "What do you think, Kakkak? Seems rude, don't it?"

"Don't call me that," said Kakuzu of the glowing green eyes as he followed his fellow Akatsuki member into the room. The words were imperative but the sigh that carried them forth robbed them of all their force. It was the sigh of every elder brother who had ever been stuck babysitting their bratty younger sibling.

"Gentlemen," Asuma said, straightening from the combat stance he had automatically taken as Chevrotain's warning sent him surging to his feet. "So nice to see you again. Please, take a seat." He gestured to the conference table, then stepped forward and helped Chevrotain to his feet. "Thank you, Chevrotain. Please wait outside."
Unsettling. Makes me almost feel bad for the Rock war hawks.

Worth lifting the Tower into a SkyTower as countermeasure? Makes it harder for spies too.
"I could have been partnered with Kisame, or Konan, or even Itachi for this month," Kakuzu muttered. "But no, I had to go and pick the short straw."
Useful data for tracking them back to meeting points.
In case you haven't had enough of Noburi carrying the team, we (by which I mean 'the delightful @Paperclipped') did all the rolls for the remainder of the key question of "does Yūma survive?". While Hazō was not there to see Mari and Haru's combat encounter trying to retrieve Yūma and Kon Ai's arduous surgeries to save his leg, Noburi will report to Hazō what exactly happened, both in the field and in the operating room...
Marvelous. The pay off from every level invested in medical skills feels wonderful. Very close rolls. Devastating if they fell the other way.

Most things in the field can be fixed with 60s. It takes real experts to fix mistakes made in field care back at the hospital. Noburi has to be quietly making a name for himself with all the people he treats. Great chapters! Some of the most fun and exciting in recent memory!

I admit a great deal of reservation regarding "Out Touched Genius." Empathy allows you to discover Aspects, if this gets discovered...
I don't think Empathy gives other characters OOC knowledge like what the names of the aspects are. They give them a sense of what we're about, they give them help putting us in little boxes, etc, but when someone meets Sasuke they don't go "omg Corrupted Will of Fire?" He's going dark, someone save us from Itachi 2.0!!!

PONWOG if somebody senses you're Out-influenced but doesn't know what that means, it's still not going to give them a good impression of you.

Does Hazou (with his Sealing Knowledge) know how commonplace being out-influenced (or similar effects) would be amongst research sealmasters?

Also, is there any way to convince the QMs to change the Aspect away from "Out-touched," or are we stuck with that?

PONWOG if somebody senses you're Out-influenced but doesn't know what that means, it's still not going to give them a good impression of you.
Hyūga elders: We found out he's something called "Out-influenced."
Hyūga sealmasters: Oh Sage. That's really bad--
Hyūga elders: Yes, we know. Those dirty, dirty foreigners.

My assumption was that what they'd get from finding this Aspect out would not give them clues from the wording, just a general sense of what it is (aka "wowee, you're certainly good at seals" more than "huh. there's something weird going on" and then any sane sealmaster would attempt to murder us on the spot)
