"The first Gōketsu sealmaster was Lord Gōketsu Jiraiya," Yasuo read. "He was born almost three hundred years ago in 1017. He was also known as the Toad Sage, the Fifth Hokage, the leader of the Sannin, the Hero of Nagi Island, the Scholar, and the author of the first fifty-eight volumes of Series One of the well-loved Icha Icha series."
[JK] When we bring Jiraiya back, make him write more Icha Icha, just so Yasuo is wrong and gets a bad grade retroactively
"It was created about fifty years after he died the first time, mostly by Jiraiya's wife and son, and it was very different from what it is today.
OH HELLS YEAH
He was the one who taught all the other Leaf clans how to make seals. Some of them thought they knew how to make seals but they were doing it wrong, so Lord Jiraiya took all their sealing stuff and fixed it and gave it back. That's why they call him the Scholar.
bwahahahaha this is awesome, I want people to talk about me in those terms 300 years from now
Yasuo continued to plagiarize.
What a great reporting verb, haha

This was so cool to read I have stars in my eyes

PSA: Slight Timeline Revision for Chapter 607

After chapter 607 was posted, y'all raised some valid questions about NPC agency – why didn't Mari warn Hazō, etc. After some discussion, we concluded that the general outcome was appropriate, but that we should make a slight revision to the timeline in order to address the points the players made. The revision will give Hazō more time to strategize and respond to the situation. Here is the original timeline of events:

Feb 8Hazō talks with Yuno, has a meeting with the GIC, talks with Asuma, and tries to find Hidan only to find that Hidan had just gone. Mari recognizes that there might be a reputation problem. She starts working the city, identifying issues and putting them down. She is busy with this until late and doesn't catch up to Hazō, but things aren't too bad and so she's okay with leaving it tomorrow when she knows more
Feb 9Hazō goes on a chakra beast hunt with Yuno and is gone until late.
Feb 10Hazō does sealing research all day. Instead of returning home at nightfall, he tries another experiment on a hunch, discovering the unique metaphysical potential of the crystal retrieved from the Caverns of Mild Peril.

Meanwhile, Mari has realized that this is a serious problem and Hazō needs to get on it ASAP. She asks around and determines that he's doing research; she weighs the potential social/political damage from letting this stew for another day as compared to the potential damage of causing a sealing failure by distracting Hazō. Reluctantly, she leaves him alone, intending to grab him when he gets home. Unfortunately, he works until well after dark (thank you, Jiraiya's Awesome Daybright Lantern) and she doesn't catch him.
February 11In the morning, Hazō sends messengers to gather his advisors. They quickly respond, and interrogate Hazō over why he didn't denounce Jashin yet.

We looked at this and realized that we hadn't handled Mari properly; she should have been taking stringent measures to ensure that she talked to him the evening of the 10th – leaving notes on his pillow / desk / everywhere, telling the clan to send him to her immediately, etc. As a result, we're making the small retcon mentioned above.

Here is the revised timeline:

Feb 8(same)
Feb 9(same)
Feb 10Hazō does his research as normal, finishing up before it is completely dark.
When Hazō returns home, Mari grabs him and immediately demands that he gather his advisors to deal with the Jashinism thing, planning a speech to be delivered tomorrow morning. Chapter 607 happens as shown.
Feb11(Assuming you vote for it) Hazō denounces Jashinism as early as he can get an appropriately-sized audience together.

The situation did not immediately explode on the 9th. Instead tension was merely building, as noted in the chapter:

The following lines will be edited:

Hazō actually looked almost cheerful, just like he had been ever since he came back from yesterday's sealing research.

"Hazō actually looked almost cheerful after his day of sealing research."

You mean you made the announcement this morning?

"You mean you made the announcement this evening?"

Everyone knows you were away yesterday as well

"Everyone knows you were away today as well."

Finally, two notes of ours:

  • We considered having Hazōpilot take care of denouncing Jashin, but decided not to do it ourselves since denouncing Jashin could have extremely important implications when Hidan returns. In our view at the time, potentially drawing the ire of the S-ranker was too much for the QMs to do on the players' behalf.
  • Second, while we are sympathetic to the fact that a key piece of information was not in a threadmarked post that everyone would have read, we do have the expectation that, when we answer plan-relevant player questions, the information we share will be used in plans.

He died? What kind of second-rate sealmaster can't live forever?
Clearly we faked our death after sufficiently uplifting our home dimension so we could go help other dimensions that need our help more! And one by one the rest of Team Uplift did the same, gradually shifting administration over to the new generations and joining Hazou in the endless quest to make everything - yes, everything, everywhere and everywhen and all the every's in-between - better.

[X] Dedicate some SCs to professing Hazou's deep and unending love for the will of fire, denouncing Jashinism, pointing out essies just be saying shit and Hazou was trying to prevent Hidan from murderizing Leaf (seriously does this not go without saying?), saving cats from trees, kissing babies, and giving out money to neurodivergent KEI orphans, then go back to the stuff we were doing before the latest social nuclear blast, namely sealing research and making fat stacks of cash.

(hoping this comes across as cheeky rather than salty but ymmv on the interwebs :V)

Hang on; is there any way we can denounce Jashin that simultaneously accomplishes our goal here and also avoids pissing off Hidan?

This sounds like a good idea that was posted by a particularly clever and smart human person... y'all should vote for it.
Interludes are just suggestions, more people voting for it doesn't greatly improve the odds it gets written

If you want to see this, guaranteed, put it in an action plan.

Hmm actually that could be cool. Bring the same-age clan heads or the pissed off Goketsu/KEI to Bakuchioka and tell em what went down there (ra ra sanity checks permission) and speechify them and be MAD :HazouLook:

Action plans further the timeline, and I want to put things on pause so that...
  • We can finally have some low-stakes, wholesome fluff
  • Decompress from the everything that's happened since EM Nuke
  • The QMs can work on the Jiraiya's Seals Backlog
  • The QMs can work on the Tower Seals Backlog
  • The QMs can work on the Jutsu Audit XP Backlog
  • The QMs can work on the Ninjutsu Revisions Backlog
  • And I'm sure there's more
Point being: Readers get a much-needed break to avoid burnout, QMs get to work on the backlog. Vel, at least, has said he'd be okay with that in the Discord.

I mean, would Hidan not understand that we could well die if we push too early for a Jashinist revolution? That Leaf is not a civilian village, waiting for us to convert them? That Leaf will convert, but first we need to pry open their heart (esp. through Uplift)?

edit: our win conditions might look like "Hidan thinks Hazou is still a Jashinist, and is not in fact betraying him" (Hidan front) and "Leaf thinks Hazou is not a heretic" (Leaf front).
