So, sealing arrays are still a thing?

...Mechanics please?
Using 5 Seal Barrier (a known sealing array) as our benchmark, researching an array is identical to researching any other project, except instead of the project involving one seal element it involves multiple seal elements. Our upcoming Fourfold Seal of Preservation project is also going to be a sealing array, and I think technically Air Domes and Skywalkers would count as well as they involve multiple seal elements.

As for developing seal arrays, sometimes it's an intentional part of the design, like with Air Dome where you want to be able to specify how large a dome to make, and sometimes it's just something added during the research process to make the seal easier, like how the 5 Seal Barrier needs 4 support seals to reinforce the main seal. When we eventually start a research project that could, theoretically, be made easier by turning it into an array, I expect the QMs will make us aware of that opportunity and let us decide what to aim for.

In short, they aren't fundamentally different than ordinary seals, they're just what you call a seal that needs multiple elements to achieve its desired effect. This ranges from "Air Dome technically needs two elements" to "Five Seal Barrier doesn't work without the four support seals" to "Sasori made a huge sealing array at the base of the Seedling on Nagi Island".

WOG: You brought four chunks of crystal back with you.

ponwog99: You cannot reuse any seal blank, including the one that Hazō destroyed in chapter 606.

There was some discussion among the QMs about whether the other chunks of crystal are large enough to be used for blanks. I don't believe a decision was made; I'm mentioning this only so that people don't get an unpleasant surprise.

Note that paper seals do not change size after being drawn. You can draw them larger or smaller, but that's it.

I didn't think we had grued the existence of sealing arrays...am I having a cheese-brained moment and that was announced somewhere?
I think some wires may be crossed? Last time I remember this coming up was in the context of us going wait, do we have two IN memories for each seal (one big one small), and the result was only one IN memory/ seal stored. I'm having a heck of a time pulling up the prior conversation though
(Rules doc below, reason for my confusion)
Seals are ink designs plus an infusion of chakra. The ability to *draw* Seals depends on the Craft(Calligraphy) skill. In order to achieve a reliable effect, the ink must be placed in very specific patterns - stroke order, brush whorls, etc. all matter, which means that placing seals on different materials is a specialist art in itself. Almost all sealmasters learn to scribe on high-quality paper. Seals can be drawn large and then shrunk down. Minimum size == thumbnail.
Aha!
I figured out what I was remembering! I brought this up two years ago on discord, got the answer there and stopped worrying about it until now lmao.

*twitches with desire to request edit access on the rules doc to change it to the following*

Seals can be drawn at any size larger than or equal to a thumbnail, but sealmasters generally research with larger variations for slightly reduced TNs. It is trivial to draw smaller or larger versions of seals you have mastered (reduced the calligraphy TN past the point of possible failure).

Awesome, thanks. Just a couple follow ups. Roughly how big was the chunk he used for the blank in 606?

Having seen the Cave Crystal in Honey, how many blanks does Hazou think he could get out of it? A hundred? Five hundred? A thousand? Thousands?

"Each brick was as identical as Hazō Prime's skill with Earthshaping could make it: a thumb joint thick, a thumb wide, and a handspan long."

I don't recall offhand, but I believe the crystal in Honey was significantly larger than a person.

This reminds me:
Is Hazou able to reproduce the stuff the crystal is made of, if not the crystal itself?
I don't understand the question. Reword/expand, please?

Ah thanks, if turn that into inches I get about 1.5"×3"×9", or 3.75cm×7.5cm×23cm is approx 650mL or 0.65 L.

Average body volume is 62L, assume roughly 3x that for the size of the crystal. That's about 300 blanks.

The players voted in a conversation with Kagome that was interrupted by Hidan, and we never got around to it. In the interest of keeping things moving, we're going to have Kagome answer the questions outside of a chapter.

Has his Rift Sealing Ideas timeline changed since learning MS7?
His plan remains basically same:
  1. Modify MS8 to latch onto the rift, push chakra into it to open it up infinitesimally, then send a sensor through it to get readings on status of the rift and on the other side. (in theory, this seal would open the rift if used from both sides)
  2. Depending on those readings and how chakra flows through the rift, design a "channel" that could take a massive chakra flow from the Fox's opened tenketsu and channel it into the rift to forcibly inflate it. (depending on Kagome's prediction on cavitation)
Minato seal displays resemble Naruto's jinchuuriki seal. Investigate if promising. Cross-reference Hazou's Bijuu seal sketches .
On further examination, the seal display and the jinchūriki seal have some qualitative similarities and many qualitative differences. "Investigate if promising" doesn't tell either Hazou or Kagome what they should be investigating.

Does Kagome think they can open it without Naruto tenketsu/Minato notes? How long will it take?
Kagome is certain that they can open it eventually with all the lore and S-rank abilities they have access to. He cannot tell how long it will take. On the next rift trip, he hopes to at least confirm via readings that they haven't opened it yet.

They likely intend to resurrect Pain. Could we perma-kill him/remove his eyes from the equation?
Kagome says that it is relatively easy to approximately perma-kill someone in the Naraka if you can overpower them: simply feed their shadow to an umbral devourer. When they die next, they'll reappear in the umbral devourer's belly and repeatedly be digested. They'll have faded away long before the umbral devourer is done digesting them.

  • Hypothetically, we could try converting him to Leaf's side and Uplift, but it seems risky.
  • Thoughts?
Kagome has no clue how you would do this.

Kill Sasori, their only route to using the Rift.
  • Akatsuki'd likely come after Kagome/Hazou.
Kagome has no clue how you would do this but is absolutely on-board with killing one of those S-rank stinkers. He asks if there are any particular seals that would help in killing them.

Create second Rift back and exit somewhere else.
Enter Rift, collect data to target Naraka, close Rift permanently, open our own.
If it's possible to open a new portal to the Pure Lands and close the current one?
Kagome laughs and tells you that any plan to open a new rift wholesale would be unimaginably unlikely. It would require precisely repeating a sealing failure except under completely different local and astrological conditions.

Move Rift somewhere they'd have trouble accessing/finding it. Leaf? 7th Path? Random cave?
If it's possible to move the rift to a different location?
After some thinking, muttering, and a good bit of complaining about face-eating, skin-melting monsters, Kagome begrudgingly accepts that he doesn't yet know why this would be impossible. According to all evidence so far, the rift is a extremely malformed storage channel. It would be very tough, but it's theoretically possible to move the channel (though it would need to be done carefully to prevent the rift from degrading too much).

Create impenetrable 5SB airtight foil box around Rift, fortified with defenses like Jiraiya's Fire Absorber seals, and stall them out. Call in aid via 7th Path once we exit.
In his expert opinion as a trapmaker and defense specialist, Kagome does not think you will be able to fortify a location against an extended assault by multiple S-rankers, especially without an S-rank sealmaster on your side. He does think that you could perhaps hold out a couple hours.

How to ward against Path drain?
Kagome has no ideas, and doesn't even know if it's possible.

Whether summoning/reverse summoning is possible/safe?
Kagome has no idea, but his intuition is that it would be dangerous to the summon (or summoner, in the case of reverse summoning). The Summon Scroll charts a path between the Human and the Seventh Paths, and there's no reason to think it would work between Naraka and Seventh. He does not want to run experiments, as he suspects any experiment would be immediately lethal.

Does Kagome know any tracking seals?
He does not.

Ask Noburi to look into Tenketsu opening.
Tenketsu are physical points in the chakra system that regulate the flow of chakra through the body, similar to a valve in the cardiovascular system. Noburi tells you that it's not particularly hard to open up a tenketsu. It is hard to get the chakra to flow out of someone rather than continue moving through their system (now in a disregulated, dangerous way), but it is possible. The really hard part, in his expert opinion, would be to ensure that the patient survives the surgery. He does not know if it is within his mednin prowess.

Kagome has no ideas, and doesn't even know if it's possible [to prevent chakra drain].
Does chakra flow through materials (ie, it can't be trapped in an air-tight bag)?

The really hard part, in his expert opinion, would be to ensure that the patient survives the surgery. He does not know if it is within his mednin prowess.
And SC would immediately dispel? Perhaps a chain of SC could do it, in the case of Naruto

At work for a fair few more hours, but provide feedback , and I'll do my best to respond afterwards.

[X] Action Plan: Yuno, Ino, and Uplift
Wordcount: 367
  • Meet with Mari, Kei, Snowflake, Noburi
    • Relay our conversations with Yuno about Jashinism.
    • Yuno's hurting...
      • ...from her isolation within Isan, which caused her to lean on violence.
      • ...from Akane's death (arguably her first friend), which primed her to lean on old coping mechanisms even more.
    • Hidan got to Yuno when she was emotionally vulnerable, filling the cracks in her heart with bullshit.
    • She'll probably try to convert the entire clan, starting with y'all.
    • Mari:
      • Hidan may be a charismatic cult leader, but socials are your specialization. Could you un-brainwash Yuno?
      • Would help from another social spec be productive? Ami might leap at the chance to free someone from being slaved to the will of a god. Would you be comfortable working together/in tandem with her?
    • We'd appreciate your advice (regarding steering Yuno away from Jashin while still accepting her love of violence), and your help (with ensuring Yuno doesn't cause any incidents).
  • Ino and the sale of Hazou's personal Goo Bomb seals
    • Internally:
      • Put on "Goketsu Clan Head" Hat.
      • The Yamanaka Clan Head wants a commission that eats into our best sealmaster's valuable time. Luckily, it's prosocial in intent, and our clans are allied. Allowances can be made where they might not otherwise be.
      • Trade in (and assume) good faith
    • Initial Proposal:
      • The Yamanaka Clan promises not to sell or reverse engineer them.
      • Supply is for genin-use only
        • Each genin gets three seals (be willing to negotiate to four/five, but not much more)
        • Genin are resupplied upon return from missions.
      • One Year Duration, revisiting the trade deal afterwards.
      • Goketsu Hazou will work to provide a backstock within the Goketsu Clan so that, should he be unavailable to resupply a Yamanaka genin, they're not inconvenienced.
      • We don't really need cash, so...
      • What're the Yamanaka Clan offering?
    • Let Hazou-pilot and Ino take it from there.
  • Offscreen
    • Ask Noburi...
      • To test if sealing an object sterilizes it (spirits are questionably alive).
      • Whether Arachnid Silk bandages would be an improvement for the hospital?
        • If so, donate a lot. We have ES50 and can afford to take a temporary hit on Arachnid Silk Trade.
    • Publicly denounce Jashinism
      • Optimize with Mari/Kei
      • Ask how to recoup our reputation.

I thought Kagome showed us a seal which could find Ami wherever she was in the world and kill her. He just didn't want to talk about it because it would "scare the normies"
I think that was retcon'd.
PSA: There has been a retcon.

Ever since chapter 576 (link) came out, there has been discussion among the QMs as to whether it causes too many issues with, or contradicts existing elements of, the worldbuilding. The final decision is that yes, it does. As a result, the chapter has been replaced. Please read it, but a summary of the changes:

  • Chapter 576.1 has been decanonized
  • Kagome's 'invisible chakra construct' assassination seals never existed
  • Kagome's 'know where everyone on the estate is' seal array was not stated to exist. No comment on whether or not it does
  • Kagome never talked about 'do not scare the normies'
  • Kagome has only made it through 4.5 of the seals in Minato's chain (this is one of the things I had wrong when I originally wrote chapter 576), so he could not speculate about the characteristics of the chakra construct created by the seventh seal in Minato's pedagogical series
  • Kagome does not have a tenketsu-opening seal

Kagome laughs and tells you that any plan to open a new rift wholesale would be unimaginably unlikely. It would require precisely repeating a sealing failure except under completely different local and astrological conditions.
@faflec I seem to recall being told that opening a rift is fairly straightforward but targeting the correct location/Path is the challenging part. Did I imagine this or was it mentioned somewhere

The Yamanaka Clan promises not to sell or reverse engineer them
And promises to resist all other efforts to do so to the best of their ability.

I'm also not a fan of how you characterize Yuno's stance on Jashin. She would very much have reacted similarly if Hidan met her pre-Akane. Describing it as a pure grief thing is very much missing the larger picture.

Other than that, be sure to mention that we are explicitly supposed to set the tenents of this religion.

Thanks, Paper!

Is this the kind of thing that would require or benefit from dedicated research on Noburi's part?

What does Kagome think we should research in order to be able to track people in the Pure Lands? Would blood tracking seals be viable?

Does Kagome think it would be possible to permanently close the rift? What would be required?

@faflec doesn't this contradict what we've already heard on the subject?

EDIT: ninja'd
"Of course," Hazō went on, "we do have one more option if you think it's too much for you. We open the rift, gather as much dimensional data as possible, then close it again and use the data to triangulate Naraka, I mean the Pure Land, and open another rift in a much more secure location later. It'll take longer, which means whoever we rescue will have suffered from more mental degradation, and there's that risk that Akatsuki will correctly conclude who's responsible and come for me, but if it works, it'll stop them from taking over the world with Pain without having to rely on your social skills at all."

"Always good to have a backup plan in case of the physically impossible," Ami acknowledged, "which is what a thing is if it's too difficult for me to do given enough time. Your provocation game needs work, but I'll overlook it because I can't think of the last time someone was so brazen in provoking me, and I respect brazenness.

"Dimensional triangulation sounds like a completely different thing from opening a rift, so maybe that's something you could get Kagome to look into while you're working, with his alleged amazing skills and accurate forbidden lore. In the meantime, let's lay groundwork for as many plans as possible. That means gathering intel on Akatsuki, researching all your various options, because I'm guessing some of them will be a lot more realistic than others, seducing Shikamaru—"

Didn't Kagome tell us this was an option? Or, at least that it might be an option if rift research ends up like storage scroll research which we won't know until we study it?

@Twinnstars @Inferno Vulpix Did you guys have proposals for more 3D sealing testing? I think one or both of you mentioned something about getting Cannai's help to make infusable material.
Ah, yes.

Cannai has mentioned several times now a sense that he has that we can't normally with, but EarthShaping seemed to intersect with. Additionally, he can assist our earthshaping efforts with focus, making the material jump to our bidding. That sure seems familiar.

I worry doing it like this might have permanent costs for cannai, and further that Hazō learning to do it himself will have those same costs for him. I'm imagining the backlash of keeping the chakra in the seal, except permanent. Maybe xp costs? I think Yuno mentioned once Hazō sealing part of his soul with underwater basketweaving, could track.

Personally, I think it's some version of life sense. Seals are made on (ex?)living material, and normal granite isn't living.

Summoning scrolls? Skin
Seals? Paper
Bio-seals? Bio
Lithosealing? Cave rock monster
Minatosealing? Chakra coils

I think Cannai can imbue parts of his soul into the Land, making it living for the purposes of earthshaping. I also think that if we use that resource to create seals it will have consequences for Cannai/the Dogs

This also means we really need to test the bones of chakra monsters. We don't have dragon bones rn, but if we can make farm living!Calcite or whatever from strong chakra monsters it would help a lot.
