Yeah, no. The Minami-Hyuuga civil war wouldn't have happened if the clan jounin were legally allowed to secede from the clan.

Finally found it.

"Oh, that is no concern," Snowflake said. "If you gave me an order I did not wish to carry out, I would simply leave the clan. I accepted a bond of trust and affection, not subordination."

Hazō frowned. He didn't plan to exert authority over Snowflake, and wasn't even sure how it would work if he tried. On the other hand, part of him felt like this could turn into a very bad precedent.

"For the record," Keiko said, pre-empting him, "the same is true of myself."

"Can you even do that?" Hazō demanded, feeling the ground metaphorically shift beneath his feet. "Leave a clan of your own free will?"

"It is an option virtually never exercised," Keiko said, "but yes. In both Mist and Leaf, the Kage foresaw the benefits of allowing it from the beginning, as should a clan engage in treason or other unpatriotic activity, this provides a mechanism for loyal ninja to abandon it and come under the Kage's exclusive authority."

"But then," Hazō objected, "how could punishments like execution work, if you could just leave the clan to avoid them? Uh, not that I'm saying I'd ever execute you. Please stop looking at me like that."

"That concern, too, is accounted for in law, although in Leaf it took the more pragmatic Second Hokage to patch the holes in the legislation. A sentence severe enough to be worth fleeing from, such as execution, must be countersigned by the Hokage to begin with. Then, even should the criminal leave the clan, the Hokage will not obstruct enforcement of a punishment he has already sanctioned.

"Of course, leaving a clan carries enough of a terrible cost to dissuade in and of itself. You know this better than most. To leave a clan is to turn one's back on the clan system, and by default make all clans your enemy. Nor will the clanless welcome one of their former overlords with open arms. And that is to say nothing of the perpetual danger of assassination to preserve clan secrets. Even Ami did not choose to leave the Mori, despite her love of freedom, her poor relationship with Lady Biwako, and her ill will towards the clan at large for its failure to support me.

"In any case, if you give me an unacceptable order, I will simply become a Nara only, and vice versa. And should I despair of both of you, I am in the nearly-unique position of having an independent political power base. The KEI would only approve of me more if I relinquished my clan ties. For that matter, Lady Kei would not hesitate to adopt me, given that she and I fought side by side to enable her clan's existence."

Hazō gazed at her, stunned.

Basically yeah, ninjas can secede from a Clan. Unless you mean "Create a second clan", in that case, no they can't.
No idea about what happened to the Minami-Hyuuga war. Maybe the Hyuuga simply didn't care and started murdering people regardless? When you're the strongest Clan of Leaf, you kinda can do what you want after all.

PONWOG it depends. A programmer who's learned to work effectively through migraines is not necessarily going to create better programs than a programmer of equal skill who has perfect health.
Right now the barriers affect all XP instead of making things that fall under the barrier's domain more expensive. So if XP is treated as fungible (for ease of simulation purposes) shouldn't this apply at least partially to skills and skill checks? A programmer who learned to effectively work through migraines also might be good at effectively doing other stuff in other difficult situations (Resolve) and have a steadier hand than usual (calligraphy)
Oh fun! And not wholly unexpected.

Anyway, we're ninja. Just tell her that the Hokage considers Jashinism to be illegal for opposing the local state religion and that all important Clan Heads would likely hate Jashinists. So any kind of sincere Jashinism is a strict Clan secret and Hazō only gets away with it occasionally because Asuma thinks he is manipulating Hidan. Then explain to her what we explained to Hidan, about Uplift's (partial) compatibility with Jashinism. Then tell her that we consider Uplift more important than Jashinism and that Jashin, as powerful and generous and straightforward to appease as he might be, is still just another entity. And that if her loyalty to Jashin is now above her loyalty to the Clan and to Noburi then we have a problem.

On second thought, discuss this development with Noburi first. And then with Mari. Still, Hazō's judgement and involvement matters here. He's Clan Head and Jashin-favored. That both means that Yuno might take us more seriously and also that he has a stake in one of his combat focused special jōnin not defecting or getting executed.

Edit: I agree with the thread sentiment that we should apologize to Yuno post-haste and explain to her why juggling Hidan and Asuma and Shikamaru is really stressful, but no excuse to talk to our sister in law like that when she shares something so important and heartfelt with us. Also talking to Snowflake about it is a great idea (p.s. warn Snowflake beforehand).

Second Edit: We also might need to protect Yuno from getting assassinated like Akane did. She is Gokētsu like Akane, has genin students like Akane, carries seals like Akane, goes out into the wilds like Akane, and now even has something that gives the Thinker Clans a motive to kill her like Akane.

That would entail ditching the entire concept of skill domains which we've just introduced for what we consider to be good reasons.

Quick check, "voting is closed" counts for training plans and estate plans, right? Not just action plans?

Kei finally has enough xp for Deceit 20

More than a sister in law, we might want to make Yuno a friend and an uplift member. It will take a lot of acrobacy for Yuno to fit into Uplift, but she is family/lonely/susceptible to our influence? It feels like we've been neglecting family interactions for a while now. I understand that we have urgent issues, but it might also do a lot of good to Stressed!Hazou-pilot to spend some time with family.

Also, purely for the sake of our comprehension of Jashinism, since we now have access to someone with instinctive understanding of Jashin's murderous will, we might want to dig into what it wants. It sounds like Jashin is the god of murdering psychopaths (uncaring-fascination with people's deaths). Do we have any assumption we want to test through Yuno?

Well, if we can't vote on it, we can at least discuss it while we wait for the next update. What do y'all think?

I guess I'm confused what skill domains actually entail? Like, "combat" can apply to the vast majority of our skills, including skills that don't only apply to combat, like athletics, alertness and resolve. "Sealing" could be just that plus calligraphy, but arguably alertness is also very important, at least when it comes to reaction to sealing failures. And I don't quite know what falls under Kei's "leadership".

My understanding was that while skill domains and skills can share names, their concepts don't directly overlap. As in, skills don't exclusively fall under specific domains and domains aren't gatekept or affecting only certain skills, but instead XP as a whole. So if we were to defeat a very hard encounter using mostly ninjutsu that aren't among out top four highest skills that would still unlock the combat domain barrier and allow us to more easily gather XP which we can then freely put into deceit and underwater basket weaving. So I guess it felt weird that the "sealing" domain is tied to a single skill while the other three domains we have examples of clearly aren't.

Didn't Mari approve of it when we sanity checked it with her?

"Right this way," he said, gesturing and leading her in the appropriate direction. "After we check it out, I want to get your thoughts on a different section. First one: whichever gate we decide is the main gate, I was thinking of putting a statue of Jiraiya there. Something impressive—fists on his hips, gazing heroically into the distance, that kind of thing."

She burst into laughter, so much of it that she had to clutch her stomach. "Make it big!" she gasped. "Astride the gate, so you have to walk between his legs to come onto our land."

The image caught Hazō just as he was inhaling and the laugh turned into a coughing fit. It took a few seconds, but eventually the two of them had regained their composure.

"That is absolutely going to happen," he said, nodding and continuing on towards the hot spring. "Sage's boon, Jiraiya will love that." He raised a preemptive finger. "We are not making the statue anatomically correct."

She raised an eyebrow. "'Will' love that?"
Yes, a fully clothed statue would be less tasteless.

It will be kitsch to have a giant colossus of Jiraiya straddling the gate. However, people will probably acknowledge that it's kitsch in the way that Jiraiya would have liked (after all, he named his clan Gouketsu and gave them the colors red and green – his ego was not small).

Nudity in statuary is exceedingly rare, if it exists at all in MfD. Especially for former Kage, war heroes, generals, and statesmen often in living memory, a nude statue would be quite unusual. For reference, imagine having a nude statue of JFK or Winston Churchill straddling the front of your house, except only a couple years after the person died.

Historically, nudity in sculpture was reserved for (ancient heroes and mythological figures)[Heroic nudity - Wikipedia], usually not the living or recently dead. Note that the article is in reference to Ancient Greece and Rome, both of which were much more pro-nudity than other medieval cultures. Scanning the history of medieval Japanese sculpture, I can't see any sculptures of notable figures that are nude, and we've established a setting which has even stronger nudity taboos than the equivalent in medieval Japan (e.g. historically baths were mixed but in MfD baths are gender segregated). So yes, nude statuary will be tasteless.

Again, if it's in some private, out-of-the-way corner of the estate, it'll probably get written off as an eccentricity or fetish. If it's forcing essentially everyone that enters the estate to walk under Jiraiya's exposed genitals, that's not going to have a positive connotation.
Mari only approves having a statue in the first quote. Information about norms in the second quote.

Well, if we can't vote on it, we can at least discuss it while we wait for the next update. What do y'all think?

I notice that despite asking for feedback, this hasn't been edited to reflect feedback from the last several times you posted it. That's not great.

The Uchiha have serious baggage and are best know for their traitorous missignin. I believe the QMs explicitly said that modeling things based on their style is a bad plan.

The Jiraiya statue over the gate was a funny idea, not a nessicarialy good one, especially not nude(even with clothes that would require an annoying amount of matanence. And have you ever tried to dress a statue? You often need to sew the clothes on around it.) . The whole point of upgradeing our estate is to make it be more respectable.

Hazou's time is precious. Hazou's SC time is precious. Relying on a lot of ES takes a lot of Hazou's time from seals and training that might otherwise save our lives.

ES contains valuable secrets. Empthisiseing this is not to our advantage. We're already sloppy with its secrecy, this would ruin it.

Corundum windows would make Goketsu gem-creation abilities common knowledge. This would make the precious gems market collapse WAY faster, and cost the clan a staggering amount of money. Hiring aburame to do double-pane glass saves the clan a fortune, and requires less Hazo time, and is nice to Shino
Glass also avoids the issues of leaving multiple blocks of gemstone each worth enough to buy a small village in every house in a semi-public area. These will become wildly known *instantly* and if corundum isn't totally devalued, it will be a constant battle to keep them from being stolen.

---

Consider fixeing these known bugs, justifying why they should remain, or otherwise engageing, before asking people to spend effort giving you more feedback.

EDIT:
Re-read, and this was fairly rude/uncharitable of me, sorry.
I somewhat stand by my point, but there was no reason for me to let my mood get the better of me or be a dick.
Give this feedback a look, and I'll talk over the plan more.

  • The Uchiha Compound is "a city unto itself." We have "nearly a thousand" civilians. We need that layout to effectively house our people. We can minimize the connotation by paying enough homage to Leaf in other areas.
    • Nara-esque Shadow Art
    • Statues/lampposts of Leaf heroes, holding Daybright seals aloft
    • Yamanaka-esque Gardens (gardens are generally important in Leaf architectural styles)
    • Minami-esque benches and garden walls
    • Wooden Facades on our buildings (again, important in Leaf architectural styles)
    • The Senju. Founded Leaf and a nod of respect to Tsunade, whom Noburi (one of our founding members) hopes to emulate.
    • The Sarutobi, a nod to a Founding Leaf Clan and highlights our connection to them through Jiraiya's sensei.
    • The Akane Seal Bank, which will highlight her sacrifice to Leaf and double down on our contributions to the overall welfare of Leaf
    • Summoning Carvings, which will highlight the generational power we've brought to Leaf
    • Dragon Carvings. S-rank mission, existential threats we're slaying to help keep Leaf alive
    • And more.
  • In my opinion, all of the above will counterbalance whatever side-eye we get from copying the Uchiha layout (which, again, we need due to our sheer population size).
The Jiraiya statue over the gate was a funny idea, not a good one.
  • Sure, deleted. I was remembering the in-chapter Mari feedback, not the informational QM post.
Hazou's time is precious. Hazou's SC time is precious. Relying on a lot of ES takes a lot of Hazou's time from seals and training that might otherwise save our lives.

The generational benefits outweigh the cost. It takes some of our time, but it creates a magically sturdy Clan Compound made from magically dense/protective materials. Should anything ever happen (Kyuubi gets released, another Collapse, etc), our clan will be far more likely to endure.

Especially when you factor in the Civilian Evac Shelters are going to be Kagome-Optimized and made from these same magically sturdy materials.

ES contains valuable secrets. Empthisiseing this is not to our advantage. We're already sloppy with its secrecy, this would ruin it.

50-level slots are precious. Horrifically precious. Far too precious to worry about wasting on a noncombat jutsu.

Asuma was only worried about EM Nuke because it has direct combat applications (Area Denial by making a Zone too hot to remain in), so a jonin might one day raise it to level 40.

But Earthshaping is impossible to use in combat. It's too slow, it's too chakra-intensive, it demands too much of your focus, and you die if run out of chakra while casting it. Anyone who raises it to fill a 50-slot is insane, and more than a few people within the playerbase are mad that we've leveled it this far, let alone that we apparently have to raise it to a level 60-slot for 3D Sealing.

Further, I do think that it's worth pointing out that there are S-rankers who don't have level 70-stats. Most S-rankers aren't S-rank because of their stats. We have QM confirmation on this, and one of the QMs said that Jiraiya/Hiruzen style S-rankers are rare enough to warrant their own abbreviation in the QM Docs "SOSA" (S-Rank on Stats Alone). S-rankers are S-rankers because of their bullshit Stunts. Their shinies. Their tricks and tips that let them be the bullshit that they are.

So it's not as though a most S-rankers can pick up Earthshaping and instantly raise it to 50, and discover unlimited gemstones. Even the "alter density" aspect of Earthshaping is only unlocked at level 40, and that's still an insane amount to level a noncombat jutsu, when that same 40-slot could have been filled with far more useful things (such as socials, chakra reserves, taijutsu/melee/ranged weapons, combat jutsu, medical stats, research-adjacent stats like Calligraphy or Carving, etc).

I'm skeptical that Corundum would expose ES. It's literally a new gemstone that Hazou invented/discovered, himself. It's also clear unless otherwise doped, IIRC, so it would be difficult to tell apart from normal glass.

Additionally, the construction crew could just leave open inserts, and Hazou could fill them in his own time. This would prevent the "giant chunks of gemstone" concern that you have.

I don't mind removing it, though. The defensive properties we'd gain from Corundum Windows aren't so much that it's a hill I'm willing to die on. I'll delete it in the name of cooperation.

Updated Estate Plan Below.

Sounds good, I'll add it back with the suggested sanity check.

    • ES relief carvings that resemble sealing on surfaces, hiding real seals in the noise.
    • Private monument to clan's fallen in the heart of estate (provides solace).

Do you have a citation for the number of civilians? I thought it was lower.
"Alpha, I am having trouble answering the question because it depends very much on definitions," he said carefully. "I am not part of your pack and you have not yet accepted me as your Summoner, so I owe you no obedience and you owe me no protection. In that sense, I am neither your inferior nor your superior, although I would certainly not claim equality. You are by far my elder, which in my culture requires a measure of respect, but I'm not sure that makes me 'inferior'. You're vastly more powerful than I, and therefore I am your inferior in combat. You are Alpha of an entire Clan that lays claim to massive territory, whereas I am Lord of a handful of ninja and several hundred civilians who collectively own maybe a few square miles, meaning that I am inferior to you in rank. Given our different ages, I suspect you are far wiser than I, and therefore I am your inferior in that area."

Oh, this was where I was getting my "nearly a thousand" quote.

Edit: ninja'd/faflec'd
Do remember that non-canon updates are the ones where we know in advance that what we write isn't going to have a binding effect on future worldbuilding/events, so using them as factual sources is guaranteed to trip you up sooner or later.

Yeah, my brain got hooked on the "nearly a thousand" line and as the months passed, I'd forgotten that it originally came from a non-canon update.

The "oh" was intended to be read with surprised. Edited the post accordingly.

[] (Goketsu Estate): Shikamaru was right
  • Brutalist utilitarian MEW buildings are actually the best possible buildings.
  • Make more MEW buildings. The more brutalist, the better.
    • Make sure to arrange them in evenly-spaced rectangular grids.
  • Ban painting, decorating, or otherwise beautifying any of the buildings. Such frivolities are only a distraction.
  • Use MEW to convert the ground into uniform bare stone. You shouldn't need more than 100 polygons to accurately render the entire estate.
