Suggestion: Earthshaping science for the second scene. It's less dependent on Hazou's mental state.
Per QM instructions, if you want to see this science added to your plan simply provide a link to this post within your own plan.
Done - IV's plan has been linked.
If Asuma is in on it bringing it to his attention that Hazou knows may not be a good idea, at the very least we probably should talk it through with Mari - though I really don't think he is in on it, it is possible.
Yeah, I pushed this to Mari as I want to talk to her about Orochimaru.
Sample chunk:
  • Mari
    • Hazou doesn't want to descend into conspiratorial delusions. On the other hand, there are reasonable levels of paranoia.
    • Canvass' timeline indicates ambushers were deployed before Akane's mission began. They knew her mission before she left, so the intel must've leaked. It seems like she was deliberately sent on a mission that would get her captured or killed.
    • Is it plausible Asuma or Shikamaru arranged something like this? Or some other Tower faction?
I might try to get that in there, but it's wordy. I agree I need to be more clear - it's on the list.
This seems like a bit of an insult towards all investigators involved. Of course they did.
It's been removed.
[X] Action Plan: Compassion
  • Asuma
    • Ruka
      • Clarification: is her punishment for her various missteps, or mostly Akane?
      • If it's mostly Akane...indefinite exile seems harsh. It's effectively a death sentence.
      • The hate has to stop somewhere. We're asking, as a clan head and aggrieved party, for you to exercise leniency. Five years is enough.
        • Maybe change it to something else - what do you think might help? Mandatory work (till n' fills?) alongside KEI ninja? Like you said, hatred/contempt rarely survive prolonged exposure.
      • If you do change it, maybe making public why (e.g., we asked) would help relations?
    • The Hagoromo
      • Can some of the fines paid be made available to the seal bank?
      • The Tower could keep the cash and donate explosives - that gets more tags into more hands (good), increases the Tower's ready cash (good), and effectively pays the aggrieved parties (overwhelmingly clanless genin, the bank's users).
    • Reconciliation
      • The Hagoromo are a big clan. Are there factions/individuals we might find more amicable?
      • Reo's a technique hacker. He could collaborate with Hagoromo hackers on techniques to be made available to both clans?
      • Mixing Hagoromo and Goketsu civilians seems like a good idea. (Implication: mixing our shinobi does...not.) Do they have programs which could benefit from GED graduates?
    • With Mari's approval, discuss Orochimaru's potential plans for Ren.
  • Mari
    • The timelines here imply a leak. It's implausible this was a sheer coincidence. Ambushes require intelligence. What do we do? Doesn't seem like that was investigated.
    • Orochimaru is probably going to kidnap and dissect Ren. Should we mention this to Asuma? What happens when he returns (pissed at us for lying)?
  • Do Earthshaping science.
  • Sealing Research
    • If Kagome approves (Hazo's mental state etc.) research Directional Explosives/the next Minato seal.
      • Eschew prep, use SSA, reroll -9/-12 on Sealing/Calligraphy rolls.
If someone more familiar with the timeslines than I am can clarify whether our whoopsie with Mari/Shika came before our fireside chat with Asuma?

Yeah, see, that was what I was talking about. "Let's try to split up this volume of funny matter in halves as many times as we can," they said. "What could possibly go wrong?" they said. "It shall lead to profound breakthroughs in science!"

(I am mostly joking, I'm aware it wouldn't be that easy.)
One atom fissioning is not dangerous. Fissile isotopes are dangerous because the potential for chain reactions.

Test 1: metal production
  • Cast MARI at 5 meter length. Attempt to Earthshape all the metal out of the granite.
  • How much did we get? How pure is it? What kinds of metals did we find
Can you put in a bullet point:
  • Buy 100kg of any easily available ores (copper, tin, lead, silver, gold etc.) on the Leaf market and test ES'ing any metal contained in the ore.
Most ore deposits have mixed metal content, silver mines produce a bunch of lead as a byproduct, for example. And copper mines often contain gold.

[X] Action Plan: Building a Better World
Word Count: ???
  • Sanity check with Mari.
  • Asuma:
    • Ruka:
      • Clarification: Is her punishment for her missteps, or mostly Akane?
      • If it's mostly Akane...indefinite exile seems harsh. It's effectively a death sentence.
      • The hate must stop somewhere. We're asking, as clan head and aggrieved party, for you to exercise leniency.
      • Maybe change it to something else - Long-term mandatory work (till n' fills?) alongside KEI ninja? Like you said, hatred/contempt rarely survives prolonged exposure.
    • Reconciliation:
      • You're right to have Goketsu and Hagoromo work together.
        • Reference Noburi and Neji's relationship then vs. now.
      • Suggestions:
        • Put our ninja together on long-term Till'n'Fills requiring multiple people. Make the mission something where both parties must contribute cooperatively to succeed.
          • Let a neutral third party lead the mission (Sarutobi? Aburame?).
        • Arrange for game nights for clan ninja or civilians, and 'coincidentally' make Goketsu and Hagoromo pair off together.
          • We're not sure if inviting them to our compound would make them comfortable, given everything (and vice versa). Are there neutral places where this could take place?
  • Cannai:
    • Akane's gone/died/missing.
    • We aren't handling it well.
      • We've been lashing out, at our friends, our pack...even our Alpha.
      • We aren't being the leader they need us to be.
    • Tell him the story (maintaining OPSEC).
      • Don't push any of it onto him.
      • Include our emotions, and stay honest even when it hurts.
      • Canvass was awesome, thanks for the recommendation.
    • Spend some time lying together, grieving.
  • Do Earthshaping science.
  • Offscreen:
    • Gaku: Send someone to get scent markers for Canvass' investigation (the Inuzuka?).
    • Sealing Research: Subject to Kagome sanity-check.
      • Directional Explosives, then the next Minato seal.
      • Eschew prep, use SSA, reroll -9/-12 on Sealing/Calligraphy rolls. 1 day only.

Would it be helpful to the QMs if we gathered the approximate chemical compositions of the various rocks Hazo has access to?
Yup. Thanks.

PSA: Votes for an interlude this weekend are unlikely to be accepted.
This is unlikely to matter, but I figured I'd do some expectation management just in case: As always, if I completely crunk on spoons then I'll do an interlude. I don't think that's likely and if it doesn't happen then I'll be ignoring votes for interludes. If it does happen then it's likely you'll get Honoka or Chosen for the Grave because those are super fluffy and easy, although I'll at least look at interlude votes to get inspiration. If an interlude vote wins and I'm able to write non-fluff then I'll choose whatever action plan seems most interesting, or I'll write whatever I feel like.

[X] Action Plan: Building a Better World

I see a less hateful Hazo, I vote for a less hateful Hazo.

(This is not a commitment but it is a prerequisite for my votes for this cycle.)

i have no spoons for planmaking(I tried), i will vote for plans that move the following plotlines: :V

-Finally obtain a basement.(Long live ES 50).
- Orochimaru and/or Asuma apprenticeship
-Conquer Leaf Economy with ES
-Aspirational Necromancy Speech/Bringing Yuno into necromancy(Sanity-checked)

Minor changes to reduce word count, but it's still >300 words when you include the plan + IV's Earthshaping stuff (does this count??).

    • Reconciliation:
      • You're right that having Goketsu and Hagoromo work together may help break the cycle. Noburi and Neji may not be the best of friends, but they've settled into a respectful rivalry since they first met. A lot of that has to do with how they've been made to interact with each other, especially cooperatively. As for what else could be done...
      • Put Goketsu and Hagoromo ninja together on Till'n'Fills requiring multiple people. Make the mission something that both parties need to contribute cooperatively to succeed.
        • Let a neutral third party lead the mission (Sarutobi? Aburame?).
        • Missions get done (check), clan members are pushed to interact cooperatively during the mission (check), both sides get to see each other as people (check check check)...
      • Arrange for game nights for clan ninja or civilians, and 'coincidentally' make Goketsu and Hagoromo pair off together.
        • We're not sure if inviting them to our compound would make them comfortable, given everything (and vice versa). Are there neutral places where this could take place?

Are we going to do the "Canvass check the scents of different people/object" + "Propose asking Hidan to Asuma" in another plan later down the line?

I would like to do the former in a future update, but the latter I am more hesitant to do after Shikamaru's reaction. We would have to word it very carefully to avoid Asuma asking us if Hazou is still consumed by grief that Hazou would want to work with someone responsible for butchering civilians for sport (or "religious reasons").

Maybe change it to something else - what do you think might help? Mandatory work (till n' fills?) alongside KEI ninja? Like you said, hatred/contempt rarely survive prolonged exposure.
I'd like to note that I'm very skeptical that this can work, and same for Asuma's wider idea of forced Gouketsu/Hagoromo interactions. It is in fact entirely possible to interact with someone daily, learning to know them better, and have that only fuel the fires of your irrational hate.

Abstractly speaking, we can take on the framing of trapped priors. Human perception operates on something called predictive processing. Essentially, every time we observe something — like someone greeting you — the picture we get is not purely based on sensory information. Rather, it's a combination of a top-down predictive model (what we expect to see) and bottom-up sensory data (what we actually see). Thus, our biases can literally influence what we see. If we expect someone to dislike us, even an entirely even-toned and friendly greeting would sound hostile to us. Not because our conscious mind misinterprets it, but because the upstream information-processing machinery literally feeds us a biased perspective.

In the worst cases, like severe trauma or depression or political fanatism, these top-down priors become "trapped". You become so utterly convinced that some experience is horrible, or that someone hates you, that there's virtually nothing that can change your mind. Even very strong evidence to the contrary gets twisted on the way to your conscious mind, to instead serve as further evidence supporting your deeply-set belief.

So I expect these mandatory sessions to only make each party even more convinced that the other is vile scum.

In this case, it'd even be boosted by the "mandatory" part. People don't like being manipulated, so Ruka and Gouketsu/Hagoromo will proactively resolve not to let this work, to keep on hating KEI ninja/each other; actively look for evidence of the other's vileness and nurture it.

There are two tweaks that can make it more likely to work:
  • Make it more extreme. Send Ruka on a long-term low-risk mission in a group of KEI ninja, such that she's cut off from the other Hagoromo with whom she can commiserate about the terrible mudfeet, and is instead forced to learn to work with and trust them. Wider Gouketsu/Hagoromo... dunno, something similar; maybe some incident in which both clans are endangered and have to help each other out to succeed (and the game is rigged such that defecting is moronic).
  • Make it less extreme. Provide Ruka with soft incentives to interact more with KEI ninja/civilians, like bonus pay for till'n'fills or something, and some soft (and not-very-manipulative) incentive to be nice to them, like grading her based on the anonymous reviews from the civilians she interacted with or something. Regarding Gouketsu/Hagoromo, same: find some sphere of activity (trade, etc.) in which the interactions between them can be purely positive, minimize other contact (which has chances to go poorly), then gradually expand the contact surface until they're intermingling more properly.

[X] Action Plan: Building a Better World
Sanity check with Mari.
IV's science plan already includes a sanity check, and we can't sanity check stuff for the meeting with Asuma Hazō is already in, so I think you can save the wordcount here.

I also have two requests. First, add a line about acquiring an assortment of herbs and spices for Canvass to later compare against what she smelled earlier. This can be delegated, and I think won't require a scene, but we do need to get the ball rolling. Canvass doing the comparison later probably does require a scene, but I figure it will probably take a few days to buy a good variety of samples, so that can happen next update.

Second, I believe @FaintlySorcerous suggested that part or all of the compensation the Hagoromo are paying should be contributed to the Team Akane Seal Bank. I think it would be good to suggest this to Asuma because it gives the appearance that the Gōketsu and Hagoromo are working together to improve the survival rate of clanless genin.

I will always support comparative ideological analyses. Too bad we can't invite Saya.

Does this:

[X] Action Plan: Refocus and Reform
Word Count: 290
  • Quick sanity check with Team Upliftat our estate
    • Apologize to Mari and thank her for covering clan secret OPSEC
    • "Here's what I plan on doing, speak now if you believe any of these ideas to be unacceptable..."
  • Go to an Asuma and Kagome approved testing site to experiment with ES50
    • (Hazou!Pilot seems to find ES calming so this scene is meant to help soothe as much of his grief as possible while still getting the players actionable intel regarding ES's capabilities)
    • Extra precautions after what happened when we experimented with EM, use MEW/MARI too
      • Test mass producing different pure metals
      • Then separately test if 3D Sealing is now possible
    • Center yourself to prepare to reply to Asuma calmly
  • Offer Asuma an alternative:
    • Private ideological debates between Hazou and Ritsuo with Asuma acting as an absolute mediator would better help mend the rift between our two clans because it would address the source of our disharmony
      • Ask for a schedule for Asuma to tutor Hazou on being a clan head
        • Hazou needs background information for a productive debate
      • The three of us will have preparation time to collect our thoughts and deliver respective our arguments with only interruptions allowed from Asuma
        • Asuma goes last to keep our results honest
      • Once we establish what each of our respective positions are (and those positions we still cannot compromise on), Asuma can then assign Goketsu and Hagaromo mixed teams to test which systems of belief actually work in practice without telling the participants which ideology suggested which tests
      • Of course, Asuma as Hokage can declare what is and isn't part of the Will of Fire throughout this entire process, not just results becoming impasses.
    • Thank him for being so understanding regardless

Satisfy your desire for comparative ideological analyses?

If not, what would you like me to add? Since we can have ES experimenting separate from our action plan word count I can be more thorough with the Asuma response depending on what people think it needs.

No spoons for planmaking but wanted to suggest visiting Cannai as one of the ways to help Hazō relax and grieve
"Remember I've told you about Akane?"

"Your girlfriend slash pack mate slash subordinate slash apprentice? The one whose heart shines like the sun and lifts you from the bleakest mood, whose welfare you care about without measure, who is amazingly good at taijutsu and incredibly strong and sometimes forgets not to squish you with her hugs, who has the cutest little pattern of freckles on her lower back, whose honesty and integrity humble you and make you want to be a better person? No, you've barely spoken about her."
Cannai huffed a quiet laugh. "Be at peace, Summoner. The Dogs have experience adapting our jutsu for human use; Kakashi used several of them to good effect. We have never needed to adapt to someone who was missing fingers, but I cannot offhand think of a reason why it would be possible to make something work for a person who lacked a tail but not make it work for someone who lacked a tail and a few fingers. Still, jutsu modification is not an area I have expertise in, so it's possible that there is such a reason. Talk to Canun and tell him I sent you; if he can't help then I will put you in touch with one of our more senior ninjutsu masters."

Wow. That was a lot more than he had expected.

"Thank you. Thank you very much."

"You are pack, and this Atomu is part of your pack. It is what one does."
"In seriousness, how are you?"

Hazō sat down, leaning back against Cannai's warm back, and relaxed. The Boss had given permission for this during one of the many debriefings they'd had while Hazō and the diplomatic team were making their journey to the west; Hazō took care not to abuse the privilege but both of them found it calming. Perhaps a little too calming, actually. The warmth, the soft fur, and the slow rhythm of Cannai's breathing calmed his body's aches a tiny bit and could easily lull him to sleep if he wasn't careful.

"I'm okay," he said.

Cannai snorted, bouncing Hazō a bit. "I was under the impression that ninja were supposed to be good at lying."
Bonus points, do some ES while you're with Cannai. Maybe he can give you some extra insight into things, given his deep connection to the Land which you are shaping.

Bonus bonus points. Maybe play something on your flute too.

@eaglejarl, how fun would a scene like this be for you to write?

Test 1: metal production
  • Cast MARI at 5 meter length. Attempt to Earthshape all the metal out of the granite.
  • How much did we get? How pure is it? What kinds of metals did we find?
  • Buy some raw ores (copper, tin, lead, silver, gold, etc.) and attempt to extract the metal with ES
A few notes: (1) Hazō should try extracting pure ores (e.g. pure magnetite or hematite) out of the granite, not just pure metals, because I'm pretty sure the jutsu doesn't do chemical changes, and (2) Hazō should purchase ores before trying these experiments, so that he knows what to target when earthshaping the granite.
Test every substance you have that Earthshaping can affect
I think you should explicitly mention whether or not we're messing with the mysterious chakra crystals, and if so how much we're willing to tamper with.
Make it as pure as possible and attempt the creation of a trivial seal
Seaing research can take potentially a long time. I think it would be easier for Hazō to attempt to create the minimum viable proof that it's possible to create seals out of stone (e.g. get stone to conduct chakra, or whatever else Hazōpilot in his sealing knowledge decides is demonstrative).

I'm pretty sure that Hazou will by necessity purchase the ores before he goes off on the science test, because 'full precautions' in a post-EM world means 'far enough away that an EM wouldn't kill Leaf' and that means he's gathering all his supplies ahead of time instead of coming back home between tests.

Nonetheless, I'll adjust the wording to be more metal/ore flexible, and I can put the ore test ahead of the MARI test too.

Good point. I don't have a particular answer myself, but I'm willing to specify one way or the other based on general thread sentiment.

From what I've seen of previous scenes, creating a trivial seal is the minimum viable proof that Hazou tried. Earthshape the stone into the exact same structure as a trivial paper seal, and see if it conducts chakra.
