So... Ho is open to a social chapter, getting to know our clan members better and getting to know more about out nominal allies like the akimichi? Hell making rounds with other lords and ladies to get w good measure of their personalities while we run research on the background?

[X] Action plan: A little bit of fluff

  • Have a lesson with Harumitsu
    • He's now at a point where he should be thinking about a personal project
      • Suggest several path that he could take
        • Single color HOWS
        • An explosive variant
        • something with a timer
        • some other easy suggestions
      • Make sure that he understands both Hazou and Kagome will be available to advise him on this
    • Reflect on your own time starting to do independent research under Kagome
      • Things have changed so much since then
    • Ask Harumitsu what his plan for the future are?
      • Stress that no matter how big or small his dreams are Hazou will be there helping him every step of the way
    • Let Harumitsu know we might have some missions coming up soon. How would he feel about Kagome as an instructor while we're absent?
      • Be clear that we view Harumitsu's instruction as a personal privilege. Teaching him is a joy and we wouldn't trade it for anything.
  • Meet with Kei to discuss going after the Squirrel Scroll
    • Lay out all the information we have
    • See if the Nara have any information on where the meeting on the eastern continent went down.
    • Ask if she and Snowflake are willing to join you on this hunt
      • We both have incredibly good track records on finding priceless magical artifacts
      • It would be nice to go out on a mission as a team again
    • discuss team composition
      • Bringing Akane seems prudent since Hazou's intent is that the scroll is for her,
      • Yuno has worked well with Akane in the past, and she's an excellent tracker.
      • Noburi would be helpful for moral support and diplomacy skill, the versatility of water element, and having an additional Summoner present, plus distributing chakra.
  • Misc
    • Ask the leader of the Skyslider team if they have a subordinate who could head another research project
      • If so, have them take a few people off the Skyslider team, hire a few folks, and pursue hot air balloons.
      • Animal oil for fuel? Spider silk (waxed) for balloons?

Apparently @Velorien hasn't had a lot in plans recently that he's actively enjoyed. Below are some plan fragments. Do any of these sound (actively) fun, Vel?

I'm going to try to put together an Ami fragment, too - there's a few things to discuss with her. Alternately, we could try to take Ino on a date and feel her out on where we stand with respect to Hinata...

  • We're sorry. We were tired. We took that out on you.
  • That's not fair, that's not right, that's not the sort of brother we want to be.
  • You're brilliant and ambitious. We want to do everything we can to help you be the person everyone knows you'll be as quickly as possible.
    • Being an asshole is a betrayal of that.
  • Everything you want to do is important. It's not - yet - possible for you to do it all at once.
    • What do you want to do?
Word count: 131
Kagome:
  • Visit the Great Seal. Indulge Kagome's every paranoia when planning and executing the approach.
    • Use the tunnels? Get carried into the air?
    • Use the diagnostic seals? Just observe?
  • It's a damn shame we can't get a better look from a safer distance.
    • (OOC: QMs telescope pls.)
  • Back on the Human Path…
    • What do you think?
    • Any ideas how to kill the remaining Dragons without blowing up the Great Seal?
    • Did you see anything that changes your interpretation of our model Great Seal?
    • You have a unique perspective - you saw our model, and then you saw the seal. Share that with Leaf's other sealmasters?
    • Invite Harumitsu to the conversation - not as instruction, but as one of Leaf's preeminent sealmasters, a good sounding board, and someone who's contributed significantly to the project.
Word count: 127
Harumitsu:
  • Discuss his progress - areas of strength and weakness.
  • Invite him to speak - what's working for him? What isn't? What does he want?
    • Demand honesty - sealmasters who can't communicate openly and clearly cause seal failures. Get in a social contest if he's hiding things.
    • Respond thoughtfully. Introduce CCnJ if appropriate. Accept mistakes and inadequacies. Listen to his feelings, communicate that you're taking them seriously, and then make plans to address shortcomings.
  • How's he finding being a sealmaster within Hagomoro?
  • Time to select a first research project?
  • Apologize for being absent.
    • What we were doing was critical but we regret not being around.
    • Teaching him is a joy. We regret, deeply, the circumstances under which we met, but we're indescribably grateful that we did.
    • We're proud of him.

Velorien has stated in the past that he has a hard time writing Kagome.
This is true, but the last time he tried (within the past two dozen chapters?) he said he had an okay time and he received universal acclaim for doing so. He's also said that he wants to get better at writing Kagome, and the only way to do that is to do it. (I don't know how much of that was here vs. Discord, but a discussion was had.)

I'd give 40% odds he looks at that section and says 'hey, sounds like fun', which is good enough for me to include it.

Sounds like a pretty good plan segment overall then

Even if he is a spy he is still net benefit
I mean, every spy wants to appear to be of net benefit, and a really good one would appear that way. In actuality, they're either providing even more benefit to our enemies (to our net detriment) or they're positioning themselves to devastate us. Gaku is too competent to fail at serving either as a traitor or agent-in-place. \

Far likelier that he's exactly what he presents himself to be.
Harumitsu is a beginner, not preeminent, sealmaster
Preeminent is probably a little hyperbolic, but in terms of providing value for the problem we're discussing, he's easily top 25% of Leaf's sealmasters in terms of bringing valuable skills to the table. He's had top-notch instruction, as much domain experience as anyone else, and he's not a liability, which is of significant value and a stark contrast to the attitudes and mannerisms of Leaf's collected sealmasters.

I'm not particularly convinced that Leaf's sealmasters are much more than sealsmiths (by which I mean, they're not researchers). The one clan we know actually possessed any significant ambition and drive all died terribly. I suspect that a lot of talent was concentrated there, and the remainder - while potentially talented in their individual, narrow areas - aren't actually going to be of much help other than mass-producing HOWS...which I hope they're still doing. Heck, that might have even had a significant chilling effect on research into seals within Leaf, and a decade of being tentative about the whole business would have not-insignificant impacts.

@faflec this is currently over wordcount not-insubstantially.

Unless he works for someone not 100% against us. Such as the tower or another leaf clan

How are the others liabilities? We can just ignore anything they say that we think is wrong and keep the parts that sound right

That's fair; I hadn't considered that.

In terms of Leaf clans we trust to some extent (keeping it to voting members), we have the...Nara, who were too screwed up at the time to field a valuable agent like Gaku (even Shikaku only has so many plans), the Yamanaka, who were in a similar position, the...Sarutobi? The Aburame got hammered, too. I don't trust the Akimichi on that level.

Imagine you're doing a group project with someone more-or-less competent who has reasonable ideas but looks down their nose at you, argues with you pointlessly, or refuses to act collaboratively. You waste a lot of time and energy working with them.

Worse, imagine that by working with them, you cause a minor political stink. Working with a Minami sealmaster could credibly piss off the Hyuuga, and vice-versa.

@Velorien: Do you like the idea of having a few shorter plan snippets to choose from? Ones focusing on a single interaction or two, like what people have already proposed for this next update.

While this might or might be true currently it almost certainly won't be true long term. Since there is a ton of bonus XP freely available in Jiraiya's notes. Long term Leaf will 100% be on top of the sealing tech tree

Is the question you're asking 'do you want a single scene or a few smaller ones'?

To possibly clarify, when I threw out the plan fragments my intention was to give people things they can drag and drop into other plans, or assemble plans from. You can't vote for them individually - but you can use them as a low-barrier-to-entry method of plan creation! (If you're so inclined.) Any two of them will leave you under 300 words and might give you some space for misc. offscreen.

Goketsu are going to drag Leaf into the, uh, N+1th century as far as seal research and tech goes whether they like it or not.

I think a current bottleneck in sealing is that instruction happens on such an ad-hoc basis. I'd still like to put together a sealmaster's guild. Sure, you're a 'sealmaster' once you can scribe a bomb, but at that point, in my ideal, you're basically a journeyman. If you want full rights in the guild (which comes with some benefits TBD but not insignificant) you have to submit an original research project (ideally conducted under the supervision of a full member; we're not trying to get anyone killed) which is then reviewed by the council. (It's a pity there's no 'S' in Ph.D...)

Standardizing instruction, making resources available, tackling larger projects, and promoting functional collaboration (the sort the Hokage doesn't view as some sort of mass blood sport sealmasters participate in for no clear reason) would be things we can do. Any journeyman can show up to the talks, but if you want to be seen as a serious sealmaster and not just a storage seal monkey, you join.

We'll need to have a much bigger stick and/or carrot before we can actually make that work - it might not happen until we win the setting - but a man can dream.

Unfortunately, at the moment it is not as simple as more or less fun, since my hand injury is interfering with my typing and thus raising all spoon costs. I'd be happy to write the Noburi scene. It might be interesting to write the Kagome scene, but I'm not sure I can right now. I don't have any experience writing Harumitsu yet, so that would probably be the most challenging.

@Velorien: Do you like the idea of having a few shorter plan snippets to choose from? Ones focusing on a single interaction or two, like what people have already proposed for this next update.
What are the defining features that make these different from conventional plans?

That sucks - I'm confident we're collectively thinking of you and your hand. If there's anything that can be done to make your life easier please let us know.

Things I can think of off the top of my head:
  • It would be helpful if plans were kept below [100/200/etc.] words.
  • It would be helpful if plans were kept to single scenes.
  • It would be helpful if everyone would reassure me that they're satisfied with updates of whatever length, even if not everything in the plan is included, or that they are supportive of my taking N weeks off writing updates.
  • It would be helpful if the volume of omake increased.
  • It would be helpful if plans tried to focus on [character/theme].
('Hey, what can I do' is sometimes an overwhelming question so I try to provide people with some examples when I make such broad offers. None of those feel particularly arduous to me and I'd likely be happy to do things which at least a little harder.)

(Most of those ideas revolve around making your life easier by making writing easier/more accessible. That's because that's largely how our lives overlap, not an implied boundary. If there are other things you can think of, I probably wouldn't say 'no' out of hand. I have been meaning to look at your Patreon...)
