Who all do we want to take on our rift trip/pain seal expedition? I'm particularly found of Kei & Hazō.

If we go forward with Mari's suggestion and keep the first phase Goketsu-only, we can't take Sasuke or some Hyuga like the last time.
Other than that, the core Goketsu gang (except Mari, because her work in Leaf is relatively more impactful) I guess. By which I mean Hazou, Kagome, Noburi, Akane, Yuno (she was there last time, and we might be facing multiple instances of chakra beasts where her experience can make the difference - oh and the alien plant), and maybe Kei. Wouldn't Kei's work with Nara be relatively more important to her than a sealing expedition she can hardly help with? I might be missing other people, but the basic lineup is plenty good.

Sorry, and I promise I will stop squeezing Mari's brains for bias devilishly stopping the utopian dream of an all-hands-on-deck, explosives-everywhere Naraka expedition... right now.

On the other hand, I would like more Sasuke screentime... Plus if anyone was going to support this endeavor it would be the guy who lost his entire clan

Hazo and Kagome are necessary. We need someone to keep them safe. Akane and Yuno are our strongest fighters, with Kei slightly behind them thanks to summons. Mari could do it too, but she's wanted to be mostly retired for a while now. Noburi would only paint a larger target on our backs with no real reason to come along.

When we last took Noburi along, he was our third best chakra measurement and anomaly detection person/tool after Sasuke and Hyuga. Granted, he couldn't cut it that time. However we may not have those two this time around, so for both the initial phase of finding the scar and the following phases of probably chakra tests, Noburi shouldn't be discounted.

Who do you think will spot that bigger target with Noburi? Kabuto/Oro?

Edit: Also our lineup really depends on what we plan to do during the expedition. We already managed to detect the rift before, so do we plan to open it this time? Open it but not go inside? Open it and leave it for anyone else to just wander in (or out), or stop and wonder why there is a giant granite block in the middle of the jungle?

This would be a great time for a poll. Do we A) Want the Honoka + Kagome + Noburi training session, B) The Yuno-becoming-a-teacher conversation, or C (from Discord) ) Try to convince Tsunade to demand ask for SC permission for medics?
Of the three options, B, but I don't expect to be supporting plans that don't include the O'Uzu trip.

Kagome and Hazou are a must, and if Kagome thinks there's anyone else that'd be valuable to bring along (a Hyuuga/Sasuke like last time, or maybe Noburi, etc.) then we should try our best to bring them too.

Apart from that, we shouldn't need anyone else unless we're concerned for our safety and need to bring Jounin support of some sort, but personally I don't feel that's necessary.

Gentle reminder that the alien tentacle/plant thing from the other portal may have gotten free already. Also, depending on Hyuga's internal monologue, the darkness portal still remains as a rift scar too, and it would be an unpleasant surprise if we opened that one instead.

Edit: Would Naruto want to come or is he still under the impression that we want to shank him (accidentally) somehow? Wasn't Naruto supposed to come to a decision on whether we are insane liars by now?

I believe we are going to use Kagome's diagnostic seals on the rift scar, and then run any follow-up testing that he recommends.

The Chunin Exam/AMITY treaty negotiations began around March 25, do we have any updates from the last month about what's been going on?

I assume something must be told to Leaf/the Clan Council, they are, after all, still otherwise in the middle of a war and missions to do things are presumably still happening.
As soon as word came in that the Fourth Shinobi World War was over, details pending, the overworked, overstressed Yamanaka clan head had seized the opportunity not merely to relax and unwind, but to unleash a diabolical plot that must have been in the making for months at least.
It's over! 🎉

Plan with a corny title and a single on-screen scene. Vel can execute the scene, the research can happen, and then next update, we can leave for O'uzu and maybe Nagi too.

Feedback welcome as always. However, to maximize the chances that the plan is enacted in full (and thus we can proceed with our departure for O'uzu with MARS complete) this plan will be staying at one on-screen scene (Yuno) and minimal off-screen happenings (seal research).

Word count: <300
  • Yuno:
    • Sanity-check with Noburi/Mari. Heal consequences. Include Noburi if he wants.
    • Tone: respectful, following Isanese customs.
      • Employ Isanese 'clan head requests favour of valued clanswoman' forms if they exist.
    • Would you train estate/KEI nin to fight chakra beasts?
      • We need adoption tickets: this helps buy them.
      • The war's over, civilian welfare's a priority - these skills will be in demand.
        • We want Goketsu deeply involved in every aspect of civilian welfare. This is a cornerstone.
      • You're easily the best choice for this. We'll provide support (lessons on instruction, assistants - Akane?, etc.) where you need/want it.
      • We're not asking you to teach Mountain Cleaver - just general principles/tips.
      • Emphasize: this is a request, not an order.
    • Additionally...would you want to tutor Academy-age students?
      • Kagome did Academy outreach. It helped him build connections.
      • Children would love you.
    • Also, Fujisawa.
      • A key clan value is communication. What happened was the opposite of that.
      • This is not a dressing down. We know you feel bad. We know you'll apologize.
      • If you ever want support - advice, someone to talk to, whatever - let us know. We say this as a clan head and friend.
        • (Employ Isanese 'I mean this with utterly sincerity' forms if they exist.)
      • Relatedly: you need to stop assaulting people.
        • Not for Noburi, not for the clan. For her. If this continues, there will be consequences. We cannot lose her.
          • She's an incredible asset, but more importantly, family.
        • Please come to us. Whatever it is, we will help.
        • (Intensify previous Isanese forms if possible.)
  • Offscreen:
    • Prepare to adopt the remaining estate nin.
    • Test if it's possible to store, retrieve, and revive small chakra beasts before/after Noburi drains them.
    • With six days' prep, Kagome's assistance, invoking "Promising Sealing Student" and "Kagome-Certified Sealing Lab", research MARS.
    • Continue periodically visiting Mareo.

[X] Training Plan - Akane: FOOM!

Since I can't finish the turbojet proposal or the S&R prep options doc in short order (seriously these things are like thesis + case prep + marketing doc rolled into one), I humbly request that we keep on making one step of progress on any promising seal-tech path we have - even if it is off-screen.
Options:
  1. Second Life Seal: Test if live animals can be stored (and whether there is a size threshold), and/or test if we can store one of those animals after Noburi drains their chakra. These are simple preliminary tests. Have Kagome there.
  2. Hazou's SSS / Water reclaimer: Set an Usamatsu seal up in a clear area (with little air pollution so that it collects water vapor and not, say, smoke), and check how much it has stored up by the end of the update. (Or, set up a few seals like that to get a better reading by tearing them to access their storage at different times).
    1. Or set up any of the three experiments in the proposal, which are designed to consume as little time and effort as possible. For example, we can simply ask Kagome/Hazou-pilot about the Access Test, and set up the seal as above for the Capacity/Duration test - and they won't impede us while we spend our time with MARS.
  3. Any of the Banshee Slayer and Silence Mine Experiments. These are not simply for 'stop explosions', but in addition to 'stop explosions' can lead to 'silent explosions/guns/tags' and trivially reshapable shaped explosives.
  4. Chakra gun (the explosive version): We can simply ask Hazou-pilot and/or a civilian smith about feasibility.
  5. Or anything else I can't think of right now.

We have to progress by at least one step on any novel seal-tech (or jutsu, but less relevant) project in as many plans as we can. Why?
We had the Daizen fight two years ago. If we had been pushing ourselves, making the word count space, and chipping away at anything necromancy-related (like the vision experiment that succeeded), we likely would have had Jiraiya back already.
Our greatest returns for effort have come from innovation. Either directly, or through all that they enabled us to do later. Look at skywalkers.

If we have as many irons running in the background as we can, even the most modest success rate will grant us a skywalker-grade success with a quicker turnaround than waiting two years for another drop of necromancy. Where we are is great. If we spare less than ten percent of word count every plan, even with off-screen results, we can reach a much better place at a much quicker pace. (oh no, what have I done)

Anyway, in this case MARS is the big constant effort 'step' for this update. And that's great. If we can squeeze in a quick question or a minutes-long/background experiment to progress on some of the other paths as well, it'd be even better. With the kind of compound interest/return innovation projects represent, a small change in periodic increase can mean the difference between buying a sports car and buying the country a hundred updates from now.

Edit: @FaintlySorcerous , here's the ping you mentioned :V

From the Discord:
Off-screen compatible and low-effort tests that determine whether excellent development paths are possible are the definition of low-hanging fruit. Except in this case the fruit is golden.
Additionally: If the tests fail in the background, we won't care. If tests fail on screen, and so we've wasted at least an update of time, that's a discouraging mess. So much so that even if the next test could have led to the next Skywalker, we now have enough cold feet to never do something like that on-screen for something like 2 years irl.
And considering that the sealing system is opaque enough such that even the simplest assumptions require testing, we have to find a way to decrease our exposure to those inevitable failures as much as possible.
Therein comes off-screen questions and experiments that test for small and well-defined properties necessary for the next Skywalker to work.

Is anyone opposed to making our next trip a little longer and head up to neck afterwards to try and find the Squirrel Scroll? We've done all the prep work already so shouldn't be to hard to get Akane a major power up

Some scattershot thoughts (pre coffee).

-Mari sanity check? It's a social thing, and Mari is Social Queen

-may want to delete the "broad strokes" and just "discuss the conversation with Noburi and Mari." It'd maintain word count and fold in a Mari Sanity check while ensuring, narratively, that Noburi (the second best person in Leaf to go to for advice on Isan culture) is able to troubleshoot to the best of his ability (more info = better feedback, after all).

-replace "KEI" with "Branch Family Goketsu." As Goketsu ninja, they'll already be subordinate to Yuno and familiar with her. So it'll be playing her (likely first-ever) leadership position on "Easy Mode" until she develops enough leadership experience to be confident in her own ability to lead non-Goketsu ninja in training.

-if she's okay with that, we could ask her how she feels about eventually training non-Goketsu ninja (KEI). OTOH, that might be throwing too much at her at once ("okay, you've accepted this responsibility, now when will you be ready for even more?"). OTOOH, we'd be honest about our goals and long-term plans that involve her. Hm. Could see going either way. Non-coffee brain sluggish.

-could change the tone part to "clan head requests favor of respected senior ninja" or "respected officer" for the purposes of word count. I like that you stress that this a request, not a command.

-if Yuno isn't comfortable with the training idea, maybe we could ask her what she, herself, thinks might accomplish the same thing? It would show her that we care about her opinions and insight.

--with regard to assistants and instructors, maybe explicitly mention Akane or Kei as a touchstone/someone willing to give advice (might want to check with them first, of course). Yuno likes Akane and Kei, and they both have decent leadership experience. It'd provide a more tangible sense of security Yuno may need when tackling her first leadership role.

-I'd like to add the part about "ninja are humans with human emotions, and [their prophet, Ui, or whomever] teaches us to embrace that and that you can't throw away your emotions." Yuno's mentioned "color" with regard to positive emotions before, and I think "help others keep from choosing to throw away their colors" would be a thing she might vibe with. Also shows we remembered her conversation about Isan Culture, reinforcing that we value her insights and Isan's traditions.

-may want to swap the Dinner Conversation and the Leadership parts. That way Yuno knows, even if we're reprimanding her, we still trust, respect, and care about her. That we still believe her to be someone worth a leadership role, and someone we'd trust to tutor children (wrt the Academy).

Sorry if it's rambling.

[X] I Need to Axe Yu(no) a Question

Kagome is a walking information leak

This was already adressed here:

"Kagome," Jiraiya said, "this is important. You're a great sealmaster, but you're literally the worst liar I've ever seen. If the subject of Shadow Clone comes up with anyone except us and Shikaku, you do not say one word. Literally, not one. Do not open your mouth. Do not say that you can't talk about it, do not say that it's a secret, do not try to misdirect. You. Say. Nothing. Leave immediately and come find me, Shikaku, or Mari. Understood?"

Kagome-sensei nodded, looking hurt. "You don't have to spell it out so hard. I'm not stupid."

"No, but I need to know that I've driven the point home. Say it back to me."

"It's okay to talk about Shadow Clones with the family and with Shikaku. If anyone else is around, or if someone else wants to talk to me about it, I don't say a single word. I leave, and I come find Mari, you, or Shikaku."

So far Kagome didn't actually leak any kind of important information? Hazou, Noburi and Kei have done so, not him.

And Kagome takes secrets so serious that when Hazou leaked the Mist drain, he tried to kill Minami Nikko.

Instead of treating Kagome as if he's an idiot, Mari and Asuma could just test him? If he passes without large problems, then there is no reason to not teach him. Worst case he agrees to only use it for the Great Seal.

Ideally, you can share some Isanese perspectives, eventually (e.g. ninja and civilians ultimately have lots in common).

I understand that this is supposed to be nice for her, but this isn't really true and ignores a lot about Isan. The village was an isolated place, they are all family, even if a bit distant:

But thirdly, Yuno's instinct was to ask nicely. It struck Hazō, with the jarring sensation of an Iron Nerve movement hitting an edge case, that every civilian in Isan could trace their line of descent directly to one of the chosen ninja who'd founded Isan with Akio.

They are simply treating each other better for that reason. It's not some form of enlightened ideal, that's why they call most of the world "Barbarians".

And Yuno's personal opinion is your standard "Ninja should protect civilians, therefore we should be respected":

"Yuno," he asked cautiously, "do you think civilians are inferior to ninja?" He cursed himself for asking a leading question, but it was too late.

"Well, obviously they're inferior," Yuno said matter-of-factly. "They don't have chakra. They can't use ninjutsu, their combat skills are only good enough for the weakest chakra beasts, and they die if they get sick. Why would you ask something like that?"

"And what does that mean for how a ninja should treat them?"

Yuno gave him a confused look. "Well, you don't send them to fight chakra beasts, obviously. That's why they do the building and crafting and tapir care while we do the hunting and patrolling and tapir training. Also, we're the ones risking our lives, so we should command their respect. Lord Gōketsu, are you trying to make a point?"

"…"

He could work with this.

You want her to teach a bunch of academy children that some of them are from inferior bloodlines (both magical and mundane)? Because teaching to protect civilians is also "Will of Fire":

"The Will of Fire isn't a joke, Kagome," Jiraiya said. "It isn't a clouds-and-sunshine fantasy that is lovely in theory and impossible in the real world. It isn't a nice-to-have that can be set aside when it becomes inconvenient. It is the true source of Leaf's power, of the Land of Fire's power. We are the richest and strongest nation in the world because we grip tight to the idea that everyone should be treated fairly, that both ninja and civilian should be honorable, that everyone in this nation is family and we must work together. The civilians are the beating heart of our nation, the source of its wealth and its knowledge. The ninja are the shield held over that heart, the thin black line that keeps the nation safe. We serve with honor and the nation returns that honor. Slaughtering civilians because they refuse our trade? That is not the Will of Fire."

Highlighting and creating better cultural connection between Leaf an Isan sound nice and all, but maybe we shouldn't do it "just" to be nice to Yuno? This stuff is important business, Hiashi got in political trouble for making YOUTH part of the curriculum. A philosophy that Gai and the Turtles practice, not a bunch of strange custom only used by one person. (Yuno also complained that nobody really taught her a lot of stuff, so she probably isn't even practicing her own culture perfectly well)

A lot of people will likely be annoyed for teaching their children "foreign" stuff without their permission.

I do want to pursue it, though I'm not sure the team composition for each mission should be the same. It may be better to go back to Leaf, check in with Gaku, then swap everyone out and go to Neck (as well as Honey to get that random stuff for Orochimaru)

Main person I don't think should come along for both is Kagome. He's an insanely valuable capture target right now, as is Hazou, and the world kinda needs at least one of them to be fixing the Great Seal.

Perhaps we should discuss who we want to bring to the Rift and to pursue the Squirrel scroll? We could potentially have half the party return to Leaf and the others continue to Neck/Honey

Question how important is it to have Kagome on site? Since he's a summoner we can report all of the information back to him as soon as we get it

I think it's important that we include something to the tone of the following:

  • Time to wear our clan head hat.
    • Order Yuno not to attack girls that Noburi seems attracted to.
    • This is for her protection. As her clan head, our job is to keep her safe. If she injures the wrong person, the hokage will execute her.
    • She can scare the girls off, but no violence. Understand?
    • If she suspects Noburi of cheating, she should bring this accusation to us, and we will arbitrate on whether the accusation is likely to be true, and if so, what Noburi's punishment should be.
      • Reassure her that even if she divorced Noburi, she would still be welcome within the clan, and we would continue to protect her so long as she wished to stay.
