[x] Action Plan: A Necromantic Aura
  • Consult Kagome on the idea of creating a rift to the afterlife and rescuing Jiraiya.
    • Hazou has personally been to the afterlife.
    • We know the site of the previous rift.
    • We can hire hackers to craft a special paired jutsu like Arikada's Edo Tensei had, if that makes it easier.
    • We could work upwards from a rift 1mm wide that closes after a second.
  • You may not get an aura right away, but there may be some things you can do to speed the process up.
    • Meditate on the burns Mari gave you. Feel where in your being that they lie. Focus on these surfaces.
    • You've tasted multiple auras. Think of identity along their associative metaphorical logic.
      • Mari = Flames
      • Orochimaru = Vivisection
      • Ami = Ice
      • Jiraiya = Inferno of Damned Souls
      • Zabuza = Biting Demon
      • Hiruzen = Grandfather
      • Asuma = Bonfire
      • Itachi = Grinding Bloody Wheels
      • Keiko(?) = Frozen Mirrors
      • Haru(?) = Chained Raging Animal
      • Hazou = ???
    • What are the core elements of your identity that wouldn't be common to most other people?
      • Uplift (drive to improve the situation instead of merely preventing it from getting worse, everyone gets saved; no exceptions)
      • The Thing (sudden flashes of insight, inconsistent strategic brilliance with a risk of catastrophic miscalculation)
      • List-maker (high effort to catalogue your ideas, plan things out, and create contingencies)
      • Innovator (love of problem-solving and invention, turning things upside down)
    • Let your mind wander. What forms do these concepts coalesce to?
    • Remember in Asuma's office, when you met his gaze and refused to back down on protecting Leaf. Forget the argument itself, and dredge up that feeling of determination that even the lord hokage was not allowed to argue with. Remember also, when you told Keiko to choose whether she was on Team Uplift, or whether she had abandoned it for the Nara, and your anger "physically pushed at her".
    • Having done the above, unchain your soul.
I have no desire to maintain this, but if people like it in its current state, or want to fork their own copy of it, I feel this should be on the table.

My impression was that Prism was a Keiko clone, who we knew were there attending.

I had considered that as well but figured the simpler explanation would be to Akane do it herself instead of involving another, seperate party.

I mean, not that it matters in the grand scheme of things anyway. :V

Please feel free to ping me if there would be a plan with necro-talks, I'll gladly vote for it.

"Modular sealing?" Kagome said, in much the same tone that one might say 'bright orange camoflage?' "Sealing doesn't work that way. Chakra isn't that bright. You can't just take bits of one seal and plug them into bits of another. That would be like drawing the seal wrong in the first place. And you can't just make up a seal, you need to research it carefully. If you tried just plugging things together you could try to make a storage seal and end up making something that threw yellow acid everywhere."

Hazou cocked his head in interest. "Yellow acid? That actually sounds pretty cool. Maybe—"

"No!" Kagome snapped. "No trying to deliberately reproduce things that were disasters in the first place!"
"Yeah, except it's a half-baked idea and he had twelve entire pages listing potential failure modes. The least exciting of them was 'your blood reverses course and explodes your heart.'"

"Huh. Actually, that sounds pretty cool. I bet we could—"

"No!" Kagome-sensei scooped up a crumpled-up piece of paper from within his bedroll and hurled it at Hazō's head. "Bad Hazō! No weaponizing seal failures!"

"Lord Hagoromo, your clan will retract its ban, and provide the Gōketsu with the same range of services you do the other clans, willingly and without complications. You can be assured that the ANBU miss nothing. Lord Gōketsu, you will compensate the Hagoromo for damages dealt"
Yay, no religious war!

From both your and Yuno's reports, there'll be multiple factions in Isan that won't want to see the Pangolin Summoner back, much less side-by-side with the cursed child and a bunch of suspicious foreigners. A religious conflict is inevitable.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuu-

This:

IV was talking about prepping the ground for Project Necromancy by normalising the idea with people, mostly outside of the Clan. Asking Kagome will just result in a lot of screaming.

Also, I don't think contemplating one's nature is a way to get the aura. I'd wager we will get it naturally by growing strong, and losing things and people we care about, just like all other jōnins.

No need to fret. Pangolins are central figures in their religion. Doesn't Keiko have a Pangolin that directly spoke with their previous summoner?

Idea for the village hidden in the mountains:

Commit the greatest act of simony since Benedict IX sold the papacy! We sell the Council of Trent. Oh, you know that summoner you guys revere? We have tons of documents on them! Except, it was so long ago, and there are so many documents on various summoners... We need you help decide which ones are about the right summoner! Well, some of you, at any rate. Which of you like us again?

[X] Hubris and Greed:

Not to be too cynical but... maybe it's precisely because of the survival rates? No need to grief if you are going to die soon and I am sure someone did a cost-benefit analysis to figure out whether being demoralized or missing out on those extra hours of training was going to keep you alive longer or not.
What if we ask Asuma to make a course on how to grieve properly a requirement for becoming jonin? Along with having the Yamanaka Jutsu? If we're lucky we could give new jonin better mental stability, and thus make Leaf a more stable place.

Also, by the time you're jonin you've probably got a good enough life expectancy that the cost-benefit analysis changes.

"Not much. I read fiction for the plot, and in many of those the plot tends to be an excuse for the action. But… an expert introduced me to them last year, and then after Jiraiya's passing, I noticed that Mari wasn't grieving very much, and that worried me, but I figured if I just talked to her about it, she'd brush me off. So I asked her to recommend me her favourite works of Jiraiya's, and then after I read them, we started having long conversations about them—and about him. At first, back when there was this side of her that was cold and dark, it seemed like a doomed effort, but I kept going—it's not like getting to know Mari better wasn't worth it on its own terms—and then ever since she had her epiphany, she's started to open up a little."

Akane took a deep breath. "Hazō, I don't think she actually knows how to grieve. I mean, it's not exactly taught in the Academy, which is weird now I think of it because they do teach us about survival rates, but… well, you know what happened to her. She didn't let herself grieve for him because he was a monster, even though he was also her father figure, and after that she didn't let herself care about anybody enough to grieve when they were gone, but now she does care, and…"

"Akane?"

"Sorry, give me a minute to phrase this right.

"I never knew Jiraiya except as one of my greatest heroes, but I know he meant something to the rest of you, and you never really talk about that. I know Keiko's still angry with him, and I know Noburi's angry at fate, and you're trying to be someone who fills the gap he left in the world, and Kagome didn't let himself get that close in the first place and he has complicated feelings about that, and Haru's bitter because your bond with Jiraiya is just another thing he can't share… but none of you talk about your feelings, and I don't think it's good for Mari. Honestly, I don't think it's good for anyone."

Hazō didn't know what to say. The truth was that it wasn't just Keiko. The Gōketsu didn't talk as much as they wanted, maybe even not as much as when they'd been missing-nin with nothing in the world but each other's company. Deep conversations took time, and energy, and it felt like whenever he sat down to have one, he was taking away time from activities that would one day save the world.

Also, by the time you're jonin you've probably got a good enough life expectancy that the cost-benefit analysis changes.
Actually not the case, suprisingly. The typical Jounin dies within a couple years of getting promoted, and most die within 5 years. Exceptions exist, but your typical Jounin faces the spectre of death just as much as Chuunin and Genin.

Fork of MadScientist's plan, heavy edits but maintains the general thrust of a Kagome necromancy conversation and the aura meditation. Also includes a necromancy chat with Ino and a reactive armor suggestion for Kagome.

[X] Action Plan: Reaching Past the Veil
  • Ask Kagome if anyone's ever intentionally made a dimensional rift.
    • We know not to replicate sealing failures, but surely rifts can theoretically be made the normal way?
    • Which Path would be the easiest (safe) target?
    • Also, idea. If you make a pressure-sensitive seal that activates another seal, you can improve your directional explosives to reactive armor that automatically blasts whoever hits them!
  • Lunch with Ino
    • Start with a casual talk about Edo Tensei, and how it'd be great if it was real.
    • We think that one day it just might be. People have returned from the dead twice this year, so it's not impossible.
    • We're nowhere near ready to try, yet, and we're not asking for anything, but this quest concerns everyone, and we wanted to keep you in the loop.
  • Meditate on what your aura might be.
    • Remember the burns Mari gave you. Feel where in your being that they lie. Focus on these surfaces.
    • You've tasted more auras than most. True selves imposed on the world. Compare them with the personalities of their owners. What shapes an aura?
    • What makes you you? What defines Hazou, what sets him apart?
      • Uplift, certainly, but more than that. There's our love of lists, our understanding of the Paint, our brilliant insights, our earnest mistakes, our family, old and new, and so much more.
    • Hold onto those thoughts. What forms do these concepts coalesce to?
    • Remember in Asuma's office, when you met his gaze and refused to back down. Forget the argument itself, and dredge up that determination that even the Hokage was not allowed to argue with. Remember also, when you told Keiko to choose whether or not she had abandoned Team Uplift for the Nara, and your anger "physically pushed at her".
    • Having done the above, unchain your soul.
