I wonder how the Summoning Clans would deal with such a threat? Would they unite against an outside enemy, or would they throw other clans under the bus for their own survival? Ordinarily, I'd say the first. But, given what we've seen, I think that the second is much more likely.

Reverse summoning living things that aren't summoners kills them, which is what I was referring to

Something was bothering me the first time I read through the chapter - where was Minami's reactions? It looks like eaglejarl went back and added in some reactions, which gives me...considerably more reason to believe that the speech wasn't quite as effective as it looks like we believed. For reference, here are all of Minami's reactions in the edited chapter:
"'Enemy'? 'Strike down'?" Minami said, raising an eyebrow. "Strong words for someone who talks about modeling the Will of Fire more than anyone else, and also invites their so-called enemy's Clan Head to play board games."
She snorted. "I wish you the best with that. I'd sooner ask a pig not to eat truffles. It's easier to train pigs."
"She's a Hyūga," Minami said flatly. "She absorbed their vile nature with her mother's milk. She isn't going to change her attitude and a leopard isn't going to eat salad."
"You intend to transform the fundamental character of an entire clan...by manipulating a child?"
"Perhaps because his Clan Head orders it? It's an easy way for her to maintain political connections with a new clan that everyone is still uncertain about, while not visibly tying herself to you."
"When she comes, does she spend most of her time in conversation with her peers, the other teenage Clan Heads?"
"So. She sometimes but not always comes to a social event where she is not required to do anything political with you and at this event she spends much of her time socializing with her friends and peers. Thereby demonstrating how reasonable she is, how willingly she will work with the new clan, and maintaining close ties to the other Clan Heads without committing herself to anything."
"Everything is politics for Clan Heads, especially those who sit on the Council. Every word, every gesture, every work of art on the wall, every invitation given or taken. It all frames you for the rest of Leaf and sets their expectations of you. It worries me that you don't know this."
"Clumsy," Minami noted, her voice clinical. "It's good that you can manage your anger but you need to be less obvious about it. A good strategy is to pause for a sip of tea while you do that. It covers your face and if you drink the right tea the scent will help with relaxation."
"With respect, Lord Gōketsu...'we'?" She quirked her lips in amusement, the words balancing between friendly teasing and actual mockery.
She raised a hand in mute apology. "Fair. Apologies."
"With respect, I'll note that your estate is literally isolated from the entire city by virtue of being outside it."
"Which brings us back to the trade network."
"I've had rather a lot more practice."
Minami pursed her lips for a moment. "I'll consider it."
"Of course." She rose and escorted him out.

If you'll note - she reacts little (it was less in the first edition) and commits to nothing.

Remember what we came to this conversation for?

We came to get her hooked into the Summoning Clan trade network.

She has rejected the idea outright, and has said the ghost of a hint that she may be adjusting her stance throughout this entire conversation.

We readjust our strategy, and set a new goal: bring her to games night.

She'll consider it.

Not "sure, I'll come", she'll consider it.

In terms of "accomplishing goals"...I can't really say this worked out great.

I wonder whether a big part of the problem is that...for this entire update, Hazou wasn't looking at Minami, and wasn't hearing what she was saying. Like, just in terms of reactions - we deliver that huge speech, don't see her react nonverbally, and what we do hear is her casually picking at everything around the idea. In that giant block of quotations, there are five, maybe six nonverbal cues attached, and the rest is all textual. To me, that speaks to a real failure on Hazou's part of listening to Minami. It really feels like Hazou's reading off a scripted speech, and worse, he's not even reading the crowd to see whether it's landing or not.

I dunno though. This is mostly me thinking out loud into the chat.

(before someone comes up and says "well we should just raise our social stats they're awful" cool, thanks for reading what I said and not listening to what I'm saying I guess)

We just got a member of a feuding family to consider the chance that said feud could be resolved nonviolently while not sticking any appendages into any of our bodily orifices.

Metaphorically speaking we just crossed a bridge covered in gasoline, jet fuel, and nitroglycerine on a unicyle while juggling ten lit torches with an audience shouting at us to disrupt our concentration and eagerly waiting to watch us go very, very boom.

Her lack of reactions is a good sign because she was expecting to pounce on us so that she could get concessions from us. Not giving her an opening while receiving a concession from her, even if it is a small one, is a victory.

Politics, especially positions people have for emotional reasons, will never be disabused nor disavowed in a day. Maybe if we had 1000 points in social skills we could pull it off but people just don't stop hating other people after one conversation with a neutral third party sadly.

This is one win of many we will need if we seriously want to repair the relationship between the Minami and Hyuuga clans. It's a worthwhile goal but I expect it to reasonably take in game years to heal over these old, still festering, wounds.

Pearls before swine...

Pearls before swine...
Nah, your idea made it into the update.
"I wish that I had known enough to invite you first. Unfortunately, Hyuuga has already agreed to the initial meeting and it would be dishonorable to disinvite him without clear evidence of directly relevant offense. If he drops out or I can find a way to address your objections to your satisfaction, may we revisit this matter?"

"Oh, and I would also ask you to consider something. The Hyuuga are the weakest they have ever been specifically because the old guard are dead. Their leader is a flexible youth. They are inevitably going to go through a radical change this generation. The question is, will it be a new openness to others to capitalize on desperately needed opportunities, or a retreat to extreme conservatism to reestablish their authenticity? Hopefully this cooperative project will bend them to the former, but I will regret if they profit and grow stronger from it while you do not."
As it stands I approached Neji first because I knew him better, and he agreed to participate. I'm not comfortable uninviting him, both because I don't think it would be honorable and because it would give them an insult that would make it harder for me to reshape their culture into something a little less....
Hazō laughed. "I suppose. Anyway, going back to my earlier thought: The Hyūga are broken, and I want to fix them. I think there's a good chance of doing that, since Hinata is in charge, there are few if any elders putting stupid and poisonous ideas in her head, and the Gōketsu have several ways to help her see that better behavior has better outcomes. I understand you have grievances with them—very justified grievances!—but I'm hoping that you agree with me that helping the Hyūga get over themselves is a better way to avenge those grievances than constantly being at knifepoint with them. Better for you, better for Leaf, and more according to the Will of Fire. If you're willing and able to do that, it would be wonderful. If you believe that it wouldn't be safe because you can't trust the Hyūga, or whatever other reason might exist, I'll understand. The Gōketsu will still work to fix the problem, and if you ever change your mind and want to join us then you'll be more than welcome."
It just doesn't look like it worked.

You do realize that we don't have access to blow-by-blow reactions as we make a speech in advance? Beside, what kind of success do you think you would get when you're facing someone with a history of blood feud and is strongly inclined against the Hyuga?

Beside, she didn't call the whole idea utterly stupid. She 'consider it' not outright reject it.

Honestly the fact that we gave the Minami pause in a literal blood feud (that they have already demonstrated to be severely irrational and touchy about!) is in and of itself an achievement

DAMN THAT SURE IS A CRAZY HYPOTHETICAL TO TAKE PLACE SEVERAL YEARS FROM NOW WHEN NEJI IS LIKE 20 YEARS OLD! But for now we should focus on getting him to see us as someone trustworthy (because we obviously are)

Fixed (I hope).

But for now we should focus on getting him to see us as someone trustworthy (because we obviously are)
Yes, Hazou: the ninja who has never committed treason... more than five times? We should focus more on Hazou's sincerity instead since that has never been in question.

Which is why I suggested siccing Mari on him. She's good for more than seduction missions, damn :p

So... Does anyone know what color Mari's eyes have been lately?

Also: other than the mine, what are some good ways to help stay connected with Keiko? Because I was thinking family game nights, or (provided that Hazou's romance arc goes the multi-party route) asking for her perspective.

Hazou asking Keiko for romance advice would be a fantastic scene and I fully support this.

The Iron Nerve flickered an impish grin across his face.

I love that this shows that Hazou isn't feeling it... Though I wonder if the grin was Ami-impish, or Mari-impish?

Yes. We. I am Gōketsu Hazō, adopted son of Jiraiya of the Three, Fifth Hokage. I co-invented the skywalkers that were essential to the defeat of Akatsuki. I sheltered hundreds of Leaf's people and dozens of her ninja after the Collapse. I have every right to claim Leaf as my home and myself as one of its people." He met her eyes as he spoke, and his own were cold.

I love that Hazou's taking no shit about his status as a Leaf citizen anymore. It makes me smile ^.^

edit: It's also a fantastic bit of writing, @eaglejarl! Because if anyone says that Hazou's not a Leaf nin, then they're saying that all of Hazou's contributions still aren't enough to earn the claim of a 'Leaf Ninja.' And Hazou's done far more for the Leaf than most Leaf ninja ever will, so if someone makes that claim, then they're also writing themselves off, too! Hazou's finally learning how to politic and it makes me happy to see him gain his footing in political waters.

Hazou is just looking to spend time with someone he respects even though he does not trust her

Ami once mentioned how frustrating it can be to see people knowingly choose the worse option (for themselves and for everyone else) out of spite. After the meeting with the Minami meeting, Hazou has yet more firsthand experience with that. He could vent about this to Ami and bond over the shared stupidity of people who cling to their hatred, even as it hurts them to do so (something something, sword with no handle, cutting deeper into their hands, the harder they grip it).

Edits:
  • throw explosives of the edge to interrupt her periodically
  • If she tries to embarrass Hazou he will lean into it
    • He will lean into it in.
I think that leaning into it is going to cause Ami to "win" in a contest of "one-ups," but I also think it'll be hilarious to read. Not sure how I feel about the random explosives, though. It seems counterproductive to conversation/communication. I am all for having a fun date with Ami where we lean into the absurdity of it all, though. ^.^

  • Let's talk about boys and braid each other hair like you promised
    • Smiles seducirino (Jinno yudai) sure is hot, What about you Ami any boys that have caught your eyes?
Hazou's been around Mari enough that I don't think Ami could make Hazou blush, but the hair-braiding part alone is worth my vote. I also suspect that Ami's going to use this to tease Hazou about the Ino/Akane situation he has going on... Which, again, sounds like a lovely scene to read!

Edit2: not sure how I feel about the explosives and some of the conversational details. I'm removing my vote to think about it for a bit.

(also, just figured out how to manually add quotes in an edited post!)

HAZOU: Hey I grew out my hair so you could braid it
AMI: Hazou, how many levels of irony are you on?
HAZOU: What?
