PSA: There's a shiny.

People were hoping to find a chakra-enhancement jutsu. @Velorien and I discussed it; neither one of us had a strong feeling as to whether such a thing should/should not exist, so we decided to be nice and say that it does. More specifically, we decided that it was an Akimichi jutsu and they donated it to the contest.

Details are in the jutsu docs.

"QMs are still sorting out how this would work with the Shadow Clone"

Awww, you know us so well ^.^

Let's run this through all of our char sheets:
Hazou (CR 26, max purchase 3)
QuantityCost (overall)Gain (overall)Cost of equivalent CR (interpolated)Worth it?
1 purchase30 XP13 CP54 + (0.3)56 = 70.8 XPYes. Ratio = 30/70.8 = 0.424x cost
2 purchases70 XP26 CP144.8 XPYes, 0.483x cost
3 purchases120 XP39 CP222 XPYes, 0.541x cost
Keiko (CR 27, max purchase 3)
QuantityCost (overall)Gain (overall)Cost of equivalent CR (interpolated)Worth it?
1 purchase30 XP14 CP79.2 XPYes, 0.379x cost
2 purchases70 XP27 CP156 XPYes, 0.449x cost
3 purchases120 XP40 CP236 XPYes, 0.508x cost
Akane (CR 30, max purchase 4)
QuantityCost (overall)Gain (overall)Cost of equivalent CR (interpolated)Worth it?

3 purchases120 XP45 CP295 XPYes, 0.407x cost
4 purchases180 XP60 CP402 XPYes, 0.448x cost
And finally, Noburi, with AB 3 and 1 internal reserves (assuming that is how this works for him)
QuantityCost (overall)Gain (overall)Cost of equivalent CR (interpolated)Worth it?
1 purchase30 XP1 CP∞ XPHeck yeah!
2 purchases70 XP1 CP∞ XPProbably
3 purchases120 XP1 CP∞ XPProbably
edit: adjusted Noburi's numbers for 2/3 purchases as per EJ's statement beneath.

Remember that each purchase of the stunt requires a year of practice beforehand, meaning the fastest we can purchase these stunts is one per year. Given that the set-up is XP-free despite being time-costly, and the purchases are much superior to the normal method of the same results, I recommend we start everyone in the clan on these immediately, so as to prepare ourselves to reap benefits ASAP.

There's also the chakra boost bonuses, but I don't think that they will matter enough to make chakra boosting better than PH, so that part isn't much of a factor.

The stunt looks really time expensive.

780 hours.

With a year setup and 15 hour per day per 5-day per week commitment, I assume you can miss some training and make it up later?

Otherwise it's essentially a null jutsu, any mission lasting 3 days or longer would ruin months of progress - or any accidents that prevent the training - and it wouldn't be worthwhile for academy students to learn since it's based on their current chakras reserves rather than an absolute gained amount, so it's most advantageous the more experienced (and chakraful) they are.

So two question:
1) If you miss an hour /day /week /month /whatever do you just add that to the end as an additional training time prerequisite? I.e. it's 780 hours in 3 hour time blocks, no more than 15 hours weekly, spread out over no less than a year - but can be spread out over more than a year.
2) Is it a 5% bonus to your reserves for when you started practicing or when you purchase the stunt? I assume it's the latter, but don't want to assume.

Edit: Thought of another question, though I assume the answer is no, but still don't want to assume.
3) Can you do it faster with more training? E.g. 65 days at 12 hours per day gets you to 780 hours.

2: Based on the examples given it's neither; it's based on current chakra, not chakra-when-you-got-the-stunt. The percents are merely additive, not multiplicative: ie, 4 instances of the stunt give +20% chakra total, not +21.5%.

That makes sense!

Noburi could eventually get a single shadow clone, those spare barrels become much more important and much less spare as soon as that happens.

The stunt looks really time expensive. Doesn't seem worth it although maybe math says otherwise
It hits on a disparity between XP crunch and narrative time allocation. In theory, XP directly corresponds to time spent training, such that if we spend N days gaining M XP and spend M XP on something, it's as if we spent N days training that thing. 40 XP spent on, say, Alertness after 10-11 days of XP accumulation meaning we spent 10-11 days honing our alertness skills.

Here, we see something with massive narrative time costs but comparatively miniscule XP costs. Do we say that it's not cutting into our training time much? There isn't really much to go off of for how to handle something like this, except for how Summoning was handled, as it's a similar case.

Summoning is a 12-week intensive course, and even though we could earn the XP for it in less than 12 weeks we can't speed up the course by that amount, nor did we get any slack in the time demands of the course.

By the XP, this is totally worth it. By the narrative time costs, I have no idea.

Hmm. Okay, one way to poke at that:

Lets assume that we actually want that fime somehow (Hazou needs it for marathoning some sealing research lets say).

Assuming that one can either have a Shadow Clone do the training, or do the thing that we were going to do in that time for us, thats about one training block of time missed for that Shadow Clone, for 5 days a week for a year.

So we'd miss about .1*52*5*(3.5) = 91 XP

So it probably makes sense for us to grab this after we level CR to the 30s or 40s anyway. (The break even point is somewhere around then I think, if you're measuring in terms of XP efficiency to output.)

Not a bad deal in Lighthouse Verse. I don't think we'd necessarily have the free time for doing it uninterrupted (ie, we are off gallivanting around the continent or 7P somewhere) so that might stretch the effective XP costs out there anyway.

Footnote: PH is actually better than Chakra Boost, (if you are a high tier combat character) so I doubt we'd get all that much utility out of that aspect. It would help theoretical axadwmy kids in the clan out by five miles though!!

I'm more than a bit concerned that traditional CR-enhancing methods won't work on Noburi because his internal chakra systems (which most methods would target) are damaged during the Wakahisa-surgery thing. I'm worried that trying to run chakra through his internal system, any more than what he's got, would cause ruptures and he'd end up like Ruriko.

In any case, we'd want to work with Kabuto to assess Noburi's ability to use this stunt and even then TH a better version so FOOM isn't delayed for decades just so Noburi gets enough reserves.

Ok excuse me for beating the dead horse but:

Asking Kabuto to do bloodline research on Noburi.

Status: This is totally okay, it couldn't possibly result in us piquing Oro's interests in a dangerous way.

Going to lunch to talk to She of the Magnificent Boobs with Mari.

Status: SOMETHING COULD GO WRONG HE COULD FIND OUT WE SPOKE HIS NAME AAAAAAAAAA

C'mon now :V

Are you done?

Actually if it raises his reserves he could get as many SC as possible with just one level of it. He'd have internal chakra reserves of 2 so he could cast it and then it would balance so that they would each have 1 chakra. Noburi then drinks chakra water and he can recast it again. It's less efficient but if we get a large enough farm he can afford to pay for it

Actually, I think he can just use his bloodline to refill himself almost instantly without bothering to physically drink the water? Seems consistent with how the VD has been presented.

That's not a bad point, actually. I'd express concern that the jutsu might require Noburi's internal chakra to pay the upfront cost, but based on Mari's re-explanation it might not be the case.

Chapter 358: Amends

Gōketsu Yoshio, a giant of a man with arms like tree trunks and a beard that could hide a small deer, looked down at Hazō in barely-suppressed fear. His wife Shizue, a young woman withered before her time by a wasting disease, looked up at him with a poker face. Their daughter, Karen, hid behind her father's legs as if they were a palisade, peeking out warily at the deadly chakra beast prowling outside her village.

It was not the kind of welcome he'd hoped for when he visited the Sacred Ibis, an old, ramshackle tavern in the poor quarter which the owners steadfastly refused to abandon no matter how Yoshio's half-brother urged them to move to the Gōketsu estate. (Based on the sign outside, an ibis was a kind of lizard with a leathery mane.)

"W-Welcome to our humble home, Lord Gōketsu," Yoshio stuttered in a low baritone that would probably have caused a small earthquake if the man ever sang. "How m-may I serve you?"

Hazō suppressed a sigh. "There is no need for concern. I'm just here to talk to you about your daughter."

"Oh," Shizue said quietly, with effort. "This is about the…"

"It is," Hazō said eventually, when Shizue showed no sign of wanting to finish her sentence. "I apologise for allowing it to happen."

His bow was deep, deep enough that he didn't have to see their faces as the subject rose to the forefront of their minds, especially Karen's. Some part of him wished it could stay that way forever.

"Please raise your head!" Yoshio nearly screamed. "You have nothing to apologise for, my lord!"

The reaction seemed over-the-top at first, but thinking about it, Hazō strongly suspected that the traditional response to a civilian witnessing their clan head's humiliation was summary execution. Still, there was no way around it. For failing to anticipate the risks involved with an institution he'd built himself, Hazō deserved to be humiliated. If the abuse by an authority figure had a tenth of the impact on these kids that it'd had on Mari…

Hazō raised his head.

"But I do," he said heavily. "There is something I've started to understand over the past few months, clansman, and that is the reason a clan head has absolute power. It isn't a privilege that comes with the bloodline. It isn't a reward for doing the hardest job. It is the minimum requirement to make me able to carry out my duty.

"By adopting you into my clan, I've taken responsibility for you. I've promised that when you fall, it will be my hand that reaches out to help you up. When you make a mistake, I will be the one to deal with the consequences. And when you're attacked, I will be the one to defend you.

"Your daughter is as much of a Gōketsu as you or me. I have a duty to protect her with all the power of a clan head, and I have failed in that duty. It's as simple as that, and the fact that I can build walls with the wave of a hand or make laws with a few spoken words doesn't change it one bit.

"I can't undo what's been done. No ninja has the power to do that."

Ino had likened memory erasure to groping around inside the raw flesh of someone's brain with a pair of forceps. She'd refused to say, presumably in the name of clan secrets, whether that meant fulfilling his request was impossible, too dangerous, or merely too difficult.

"But I can give you the apology you deserve, and I can make amends."

As the three civilians stared at him, dumbstruck, he reached out and placed a heavy pouch of ryō on the saké-stained table in front of him. The thud seemed to jerk them back to their senses.

The two adults looked at each other and exchanged several intense seconds of couple telepathy.

"We can't possibly accept this, my lord," Yoshio finally said. Shizue nodded firmly.

"Can't you?" Hazō asked. "It's your right to refuse, but in the end, the money is an apology to Karen. She is the one I failed."

He looked down at the girl, who continued to stare at him in silence. There was less fear in it now, though, and more curiosity. While the adults were stuck on the fact that the tiniest offence here could be a death sentence for them (living in the village proper, they had yet to internalise that that simply wasn't the Way of Gōketsu), Karen seemed like she had the flexibility of mind to understand that she didn't understand—not because it was an adult matter, but because the world was different to how she'd thought it was. Hazō smiled on the inside. There was meaning in educating civilians, no matter how the other clans sneered.

"I've done what I can about it," Hazō said, "and I've been careful about not making this a public visit, but even the Sage's power couldn't kill a rumour. If Karen becomes known as a victim of rape, there will be those who call her damaged goods, and I've had it explained to me what that can mean for a young woman's prospects. If you don't want that money for yourselves, call it her dowry for when she comes of age."

More couple telepathy.

"We would be honoured," Yoshio said, relaxing a little. "I have no words with which to repay such generosity, my lord."

"There's no need," Hazō said. His gaze shifted downwards. "Karen, I have something to say to you too."

The girl continued to watch him warily, but she straightened up a little bit. Briefly, she met his eyes, then urgently looked down again.

"There's someone at the Gōketsu estate who went through the same thing as you. She's an adult now, and very wise, and she says that if you ever need someone to talk to, her door is always open to you. As your clan head, I promise that you can trust her. Ask for Gōketsu Mari."

The gesture of vulnerability involved in that, for Mari to bare her greatest trauma to strangers on her own initiative, had staggered him. If this was the shape Mari's personality was going to take as she finally went beyond her "playful manipulator" holding pattern and began to create something new, she was going to become a new kind of power to be reckoned with. Hazō had no words either, not for how proud he was.

"My secretary has your names," Hazō said. "If you ever need help with anything, come to the main estate and you'll get it, no questions asked. I will review the procedures we have at the school, but for now, I promise you that every new teacher will be thoroughly vetted, and all complaints—even minor complaints—will be taken seriously. A Gōketsu doesn't flinch away from the truth, even if that truth is hard to say or hard to hear."

"Thank you, my lord," Yoshio said, his voice finally somewhat even.

"We've been so rude," Shizue croaked after a silence that was just a breath short of awkward. "Tea, your lordship? Something stronger?"

Hazō shook his head. For someone who'd been a teacher a bare handful of months, Ikenaga had been a busy sexual predator, and Karen's family was only the first on Hazō's list.

"Thank you for the generous offer, but I need to get going. It's going to be a very long day."

You have received 4 XP.

Your appointment with Ino, followed by the visits, took up the entire day and all of your spoons. The rest of the plan has yet to be implemented.

What do you do?

Sunday will be an interlude, so voting closes on Wednesday 29th of July, 12 p.m. London time.

"Strength does not make one capable of rule, it makes one capable of service."

Awesome chapter. The feels are real.

It feels great to carve out a small slice of the world where things can work better than the rest of it. Perhaps with that one seed of innovation, some of the ideas we spark will spread to the rest of Konoha, taking root as superior to older ideas.

With luck, we'll even be around to spur it along.

As for our plan, I hold a general support for, in general spirit, finishing Oneiros' plan, though I do not hold this exclusive to only finishing her plan. In particular, a variant on Oneiros' remaining plan that includes the Keiko-FOOM scene and/or the Anko meeting is something I would appreciate and likely vote based on.

changes from previous plan are in cyan
Word Count 240
[X] Action plan: The wind howls it's defiance
Time period: 1 week

  • Dogs:
    • Manufacture bags and sleds, then deliver to Canoe.
    • Spend some time paying our respect to Kakashi with them.
      • Specifically to any dogs he had as summons or knew well.
    • See if we can meet more of the clan and learn their culture.
  • Meet with Noburi (medium OPSEC):
    • Have the Otters returned our message about the scroll?
    • We'll be spending huge amounts of chakra on the scroll hunt. How is the work on the Seventh Path chakra farm going?
      • Especially on a long term mission. If we are depending on Noburi for refills we won't be able to keep him full
      • We should spend a large amount of resources to get this rolling.
      • Has chakra rice been tested?
      • other options that Noburi thinks are worth investigating?
    • Enhancing internal chakra reserves:
      • Check with Chouza to see if he knows how it might interact with Noburi's bloodline
      • If it needs additional tweaking talk to Tsunade for medical advice.
    • Toads
      • Try to find additional contracts. We want him to have at least a close quarters combatant, a long range fighter, a scout/stealth expert, a diplomat/courier and, a support specialist
      • Try to find out information about Orochimaru
        • The toads interacted with him for many years so should have some insights
        • He's to dangerous to not understand
  • Begin looking through Jiariya's journals for information on Orochimaru
  • Misc:
    • Continue seal research.
    • Task Mari with acquiring all the grape producing land
