Well we walked through a portal into a potential afterlife.

That doesn't stop Orochimaru from being able to negate on any deal we make.

Anko and Kabuto both survived being a servant of Orochimaru and are basically independent agents again. How did they do it?
I find it unlikely Oro would just outright kill us, seems pretty wasteful and we're not really doing anything that threatens his existence. However, it's entirely possible he demands we become his new Kabuto or dissects us, and knowing how to avoid that outcome is paramount. Rolling over and just hoping it doesn't happen is the more dangerous path.

Orochimaru can totally pwn Leaf. I doubt even Tsunade would be able to stop him. She's a badass, but she doesn't seem to have any esoteric knowledge/powers. Best case scenario - she manages to kill Oro once. Then she'll have to look over a shoulder for the rest of her life. The only people in Leaf who probably had enough Forbidden Lore to make Oro stay dead are the Third and Jiraiya.

I thought Kabuto's regeneration ability from canon was exclusive to him (IE a bloodline ability, he just didn't know who his parents were). It let him tank a Rasengan to the gut and not immediately die of organ failure.
Right after he did this, Kabuto specifically mentions that's why orochimaru prized him, because it was something only he could do. I think he left Anko alive in canon because she managed to survive the curse seal and it interested him. I would be interested to hear how these carry over in MfD.
I agree he could probably beat all of leaf combined right now.

To be fair Mari was supposed to ask around or something. And Hazou has a track record of instead of sticking his head in the sand running headlong into a problem that he could have walked around, if he'd taken the time to look and/or ask someone else to chart a route for him...

Sure, but in the absence of that information (this was almost directly before the everything was derailed by Hiashigate and Holes, so I don't expect this to be a thing that remained a massive priority on Mari's to do list) shouldn't we do something to get it?

I think that was Kabuto's original med-ninjutsu, not a blood limit, but I read one fanfic too many, so it's all kinda messy in my head now.
Also, both Anko and Kabuto had no families and little to no friends, so it could have been just a matter of convenience for Oro.

Yeah, but subtly? Like, maybe another layer of distance from the guy himself? Not asking the people that might be in direct contact with him about him. I liked the idea of checking J-mans journals. Or maybe we could check in with Mari if she did find stuff or get her back on that task if not.
Also: I'm not keeping all the different plans in my head, so I'm not sure which one you might be supporting right now
Why are we even poking around him again? Bzyantine said it best:
We can maybe talk with Anko - not loving it, but there's a low chance it goes wrong - but then we need to use what we learn to avoid him. More importantly, as faflec pointed out, Anko still regards him highly and might tell him we asked her about him. We should make sure to have Mari surreptitiously bring up with her social spec, and give her the power to decide to cancel it if it looks like a bad idea, even if this happens mid-conversation. We can always spin it as getting to know someone in the Kei clan.
I'm nervous about making assumptions from canon because last time we did that regarding Kabuto we were killboxed. Do we even know if Kabuto has regeneration or the cursed seal was a thing in MfD?

I'm actually in favor of gathering intel on Orochimaru, but setting aside that it's the topic du jour I think I like faflec's plan better. Consider me on board for reasonably-prepared intel-gathering about Orochimaru in future plans (or this one, if faflec adds it to his own), as I do not want to find out one day that Mari's genjutsu became real because we stuck our head in the sand until it was too late.
