[X] Action Plan: The Report
Word Count: 293
  • Leave a note detailing our Naraka Path observations near Daizen.
  • Return to Leaf.
    • Hazou's injured, so take additional safety precautions.
  • Meet with Asuma.
    • Stop at the clan compound first.
      • Finger-signal Noburi/Akane to keep an eye on Haru; we don't want him running to the Hokage to blurt out our treason.
      • Talk to Mari privately, fully detailing our mission and discussing how we should report to Asuma.
        • Hazou leans towards full disclosure but wants to avoid major Consequences.
          • Would a written report, with Mari to smooth things over, be appropriate? We'd have to leave for Mist immediately...

How does this contribute to our continuing survival? I figure if we stay during the debriefing, we signal our loyalty. Whereas if we leave for Mist, we're throwing Mari to the wolves and signaling disloyalty.

Does anyone have thoughts on how to handle a Haru asking questions about The Letter To Akatsuki?
@faflec would you mine asking Mari if we should turn in the scroll as a contest submission?
Done.

Yeah, you're right. In hindsight, I don't think a written report would be a good idea given how important the contents are.

        • Talking points:
          • Summoning Scroll: We found it!
            • Should we turn it in for the contest?
          • Letter: We sent it in hopes of tilting WW4 in our favor.
            • Do we need to mention the letter? Itachi mentioned it in front of Haru...
          • Intel on Akatsuki.
            • Among other things, they were aware of our pox/plague plan against Iwa.
          • Possible limited partnership with Akatsuki.
            • They at least seem unlikely to attack.
            • Would Asuma try to take over over communications?
          • Intel on the afterlife and portal.
          • Intel on potential meteorites/chakra metal.
    • Debrief at the Tower, following Mari's advice.
  • R&R for >1week before we leave for Mist. In the meantime:
    • Prepare for the koi heist. Get Mari's advice.
      • Consider multiple trips to throw Mist off our scent when we steal the koi.
      • Make use of Summons to take/transport fish safely.
      • If possible aim to do this while someone known to be lax/incompetent is in charge of inspecting the nets.
      • Steal younger fish and tear the net between the ponds.
      • Be seen elsewhere when it happens.
    • Visit Keiko and ask how her mission went, if she's back.
    • Catch up on our Skyslider/other projects.
    • Get some checkups with Noburi/a medic-nin.

It is an option we need to consider with Mari
Honest question: Why? I feel the benefits of not having to debrief with Asuma and risk giving away the letter aren't worth the issues that Kiba points out; namely, that we're being super suspicious in not debriefing with the Hokage on this super-important topic and leaving it to Mari to sort things out. Not to mention that Asuma will more than likely want a full debrief anyway for more details and follow-up questions.

Is there something I've missed in my analysis?

Yes. The point Mari would have time to work social magic to protect us while we are not there. That by limiting things we lower our exposure to being executed or other bad ends. Fundamentally we should not be taking options of the table when we have an expert who can advise us. The risk of talking to Mari about it and it being a bad end is negligible because she will tell us that. However it might be the option that keeps us alive.

it cost us nothing to consider it. We just need to present the options to Mari and trust her since she is the expert

Why would we turn in the scroll as a contest submission?

Just make willing all of our scrolls to Konoha our contest submission.

I don't want to do either of those things. And frankly, I doubt the rest of our clan would care to will all our scrolls over to the rest of Leaf. I mean, maybe one scroll, especially if we find more, but I'd want to ensure at least the Toads stay with the clan Jiraiya made.

But yes, turning in a scroll to possibly get a scroll is... silly.

Still want a plan for the Haru situation. Please help.

Alright, fine. I re-added it but changed things up a bit. Let me know if my change works for you.

100% agree. However if it's the thing that keeps us from getting killed it's worth it. If it's a bad idea mari will veto it
Changed that section to what Oneiros suggested.

@faflec , the written Report and leaving for Mist part was meant as an "What if we don't tell Asuma and just lie?" argument for Mari.

The excuse is that Hazou pissed him off last time and Mari told him to stay away for longer and it's not even a week since then. Asuma shouldn't think that this is suspicious and be at worst offended again.

It's also meant as an option for Mari to decide.

Is the version I wrote down now acceptable? For reference:
Hazou leans towards full disclosure but wants to avoid major Consequences.
  • Possibly-stupid idea: Could we leave a written report and have Mari smooth things over?

@faflec Could talk vaguely when referencing sending the letter to Akatsuki when talking to Mari in case there are eavesdroppers
edit: and do some protocols (like substitution) to ensure it actually is mari and not someone disguised as mari

I really don't see how submitting the Porcupine Scroll would make us more likely to survive Asuma. If we're looking at the practicalities, Asuma has no reason to brand us traitors for the letter. He loses an ally (an ally that he would even have blackmail on!), throws a spanner into Leaf-Mist relations, and accomplishes a host of other complications that he and Leaf really don't need. The only way I see Asuma branding us traitors is if he's overcome with righteous fury to the point that he wants us dead on principle, and if that's the case then trying to bribe him with the Porcupine Scroll isn't going to fix anything - it'd be appealing to realpolitik when Asuma's not operating on realpolitik. And it doesn't signal true earnest loyalty to Leaf either, in this context it just signals that we're afraid for our life and are trying to bargain our way out of it.

I just don't see at all how it would help.

Maybe:

  • Idea: Could we leave a written report (fake), leave for Mist and have Mari report for us?
    • She told us to stay away from Leaf for a few weeks (convienent excuse)
It does go over the word count, but the GM's might have forgotten that Mari even said that.

Still want a plan for the Haru situation. Please help.

"Before he died, Jiraiya left me a mission, and I sent the letter as part of that mission."

Don't generalize it as "Team Uplift" because Haru already feels like an outsider and drawing attention to that "us versus you" distance won't help us. Besides, it's technically true. Jiraiya commanded Hazou to make his crazy Uplift dream a reality, not the Goketsu clan as a whole. We can ease Haru in more, depending on his reaction to the whole Akatsuki thing. If nothing else, Haru sees that we're serious about our Uplift mission statement and he's seen that we'll go as far as butting heads with S-rank terrorists to get it done. Knowing Haru, he'll probably think we're all batshit insane, but he'll respect us for it and, begrudgingly, come along for the ride.

Edit: you know, Haru probably looks up to Jiraiya the way that a lot of kunoichi look up to Tsunade. Jiraiya came up from nothing. Jiraiya was a clanless orphan who rose to be one of the wealthiest, scariest ninja in the Elemental Nations. Jiraiya was able to forge his own clan and show all the other "old blood" clans up. I can't help but wonder if half the reason that Haru joined our clan was because it was founded by Jiraiya.

To not get killed? Why would Asuma question the report?
Report: There was a Snake, we killed it, found scroll, bye bye going to steal koi now

Again it's supposed to be an option for Mari not our final decision.
Oh, so the idea would have been to leave out the Akatsuki entirely?

I'm...I do not think that is a wise idea. Our involvement with the Akatsuki is going to come out at some point or another, and if we aren't truthful about at least the basic things Bad Ends will occur.

Agreed. Itachi did his whole Pillar of Black Fire thing and Hidan isn't exactly... subtle. Asuma will know that they were in the area and, knowing our reputation for getting into messy situations, he'll automatically assume that we got involved somehow --if only because he knows about Hazou's Uplift zeal.

We don't know that. All of our guesses are just guesses. The only hope of getting through this is trusting Mari and not preemptively closing down any strategies. If a false report is as dangerous as some people think Mari will shut it down. If it's the only safe course she will approve it. Trust the expert

Hazou: "See? Akatsuki is hunting me, they even burned the place down to find me probably because I got their leader killed"

I am not really disagreeing, but I want to give Mari options.

I'm going to do some editing to make security an emphasis, but don't think disguises are going to be a factor. Seriously, if someone managed to break into the compound and replace Mari, we're already in deep shit.

*shrugs* I think making the suggestion for a written report is sufficient for Mari to fill in the blanks as to its contents. We're already asking her how to do things, anyway.
Hazou: "See? Akatsuki is hunting me, they even burned the place down to find me probably because I got their leader killed"
ASUMA: Hahahahha, alright kid, what's really going on.
