Then Shūsuke whispered loudly to Rindō, "I'm confused. What's going on?"

As one, Takahashi and Rika turned to kill him with looks alone, their standoff broken.

"Kannagi wants to let the outsiders take the trial of the scroll," a mortified Rindō explained, his voice very soft, but not too soft for a room full of senior ninja. "The Lorekeeper strongly disapproves, but Yoshida is trying to argue that we should use them to gain access to the scroll ourselves, then dispose of them. Aida is saying that it's too dangerous and we should handle things ourselves as we always have. Takahashi is saying that if we think they might succeed even if they aren't Ui's heirs, may his name be forever sung by the ten thousand worlds, that means we don't really believe in Akio's teachings."

"Oh. Got it."
OH MY FUCKING AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

DO NOT KILL A SINGLE TAPIR!

FOR JASHIN'S SAKE THAT WOULD BE THE WORST IDEA!

Just wall walk up onto the cave roof or something.
It's a bit too late for that; we have explosive traps everywhere (or we should...).

Also eaglejarl is gonna post the next part without our consent so there's no point to talking. May his name be forever sung by the ten thousand Narutards.

Inoue-sensei started talking about how much skill and manliness it showed when a ninja was able to provide for his family with his own hands, and all of a sudden our escorts decided to show us some of their favourite hunting spots in the forest.
Ehehe~

But let's keep going. We need to consider as many possibilities as possible. Perhaps we should make a list."
Oh, Hazou. Never change.

"Takahashi-sensei wouldn't betray me!" Keiko snapped. "He is not that kind of man."
Oh, Kei. The hell did that guy even do. I had teachers aplenty, but none I would defend to this extent. Not to mention, daily meetings or no, she knew him for what, 6 weeks? :\ What does he feed her, at his place.

"Or he started out as a dog, before the sealing accident," Kagome-sensei continued. "Funny little thing. Used to catch rats with his tentacles. Stinkers never saw it coming.
Oh, Kagome :D If we ever have a sealing accident, I hope it's something along these lines ^^

"Oh. Well, I started out in Winter Stance – that's 'Lumberjack Prepares for a Long Winter Stance' to break your guard, but then instead of following through and ripping out your sternum, I segued into Rolling Boulder Stance and put the momentum into a freestyle combo.
Thanks, Yuno. We all appreciate you not ripping Nobby's spine sternum out. And yeah, his taijutsu sucks. Bet as a weaponmaster you're quite disappointed :>

"If we can't do anything to put him at a disadvantage, then we just need to make it an advantage for him to cancel the wedding, right?"
Right. But what?

"Kannagi wants to let the outsiders take the trial of the scroll," a mortified Rindō explained, his voice very soft, but not too soft for a room full of senior ninja. And there we have it. That thing, sudden yet inevitable. I don't think anyone is surprised Takahashi is playing both sides, better hope we come out on top.

"Except if she came with us and it meant somebody else getting killed, I'd regret it even more. And Yuno… I don't think she's been taught all the things that people are supposed to get taught growing up. About right and wrong, and self-discipline, and other stuff.
Perceptive. Noburi really is getting the hang of the whole 'people' thing. I'm glad he acknowledges the problems with Yuno.

"Get out of the cave!" Hazō screamed as a bonfire of guardian tapirs descended on them.
Do we not have a kill-zone established in front of the cave? We had one around camp. You'd think the tapirs would turn to burned meat.

I guess Hazou could try raising MEW perimeter, to spare the poor poor animals?

It's less "without your consent" and more "y'all have already discussed the preparations for this moment, so why waste your time?"

You do, yes. There are posts with Kagome's Force Wall seals, explosive seals, etc. There is also a notional fence (some stakes + twine with bits of visible cloth) marking where the danger zone starts, so that kids do not wander in and kill themselves. The inside of the cave, especially the entryway, is where the bulk of the defenses are, though.

If they're busting down trees, I doubt MEW would give them much more trouble.
Dunno. We can make those walls pretty thick, and we don't need to make them tall to stop tapirs. They can't jump. Or can they.

Unless those trees are like ancient great chakra-enhanced trees wider than Hazou is tall, "busted trees" doesn't sound that scary.

Welllll.....none of our plans involve Syrup Trap since we weren't sure we'd get it. Maybe we could push the plan to assume these sorts of things are used? :)

I'll assume you do smart things.

I'm really looking forward to writing this; I haven't gotten to write any fight scenes in forever. Also, we're about 150,000 words into this story and we haven't killed even one party member! The other GMs in my circle have been laughing at me. We'll see who's laughing now!!!!!1!11!!!!

</me starts playing eeny-meeny with the player list, mwahaha....>

"It is decided," Rika said flatly. "The barbarians shall be permitted to attempt the trial of the scroll tomorrow at dawn. But hear this, Kannagi. As you proposed this, so is it upon you to deal with the consequences. If, against all possibility, they succeed in the trial, then you must bind them to us at once, and the cursed child will have to marry the boy Endo before the week is over."

Well, this isnt really a problem if we take the scroll and leave immediately.

We do need to discuss Yuno. My empathetic side recognizes that she would be destroyed if Noburi ditched her. She really is more Sinon from SAO than the Yuno Gasai from Future Diary in regards to her backstory. She is more emotionally balanced and good-hearted than she should be, and the murder boner I was scared of may be stronger than the average ninja, but not crazy strong. She isn't a bad person.

Additionally, she seems to have ~16 Weapons dice, meaning she is pretty much already at our skill level, so no Akane period of catch-up. The crew becomes even more powerful in combat with a melee weapons user who is vicious and would defend Noburi to the death.

On the flip side, her ostracized life in this conservative religious village will make Infiltration and general team chemistry more difficult. Inoue is probably capable of this, but it makes telling Jiraiya about Hidden Mountain rather more awkward.

Dammit, I wish we could've talked to Takahashi about setting up a negotiation with Jiraiya.

Oh.

Shit.

The tapirs are here to literally kamikaze us, and make us take the blame for "provoking them into attacking through -insert ridiculous excuse here-, which resulted in their deaths".

UGGGH I HATE POLITICAL BULLSHIT

Ok there's two things we need to do in order to avoid shitstorms: avoid killing tapirs and avoid being found guilty of whatever "caused" them to attack.

The first: Syrup Trap and MEW to trap tapirs and raise us above the tapirs. A rocky platform can't be broken by them if their patrol couldn't topple trees and they won't be crazy enough to deliberately suicide to our explosives.

The second: we deny and let them vote. Since we're the majority we should be fine.

Problem: What if they killed a tapir and blamed it on us?

It's really unfortunate that this is already upon us, we can't make a plan that explicitly deals with us preparing the night before (in which I wanted to find some way to be impossible to find the whole night), and we can't make a battle plan for this attack.

If they could've done that, they would've, I think. Just shank one and leave on our doorstep, for shocked guards to find come morning. But tapir are pretty much holy around here, so I suspect pushing them into us deliberately is the closest they can get to killing them.

The second: we deny and let them vote. Since we're the majority we should be fine.
We're not majority here, and we should not rely on our ability to reason with these people.
I mean, if it works? Great. But we should assume it won't.

I actually like that things are out of our hands (for) now? It's.. liberating.
