No the Yakuza got that money together in a day as an introduction to show how valuable they could be. That's literally pocket change
I was under the impression that that was what the merchant himself had, and that the yakuza had just told him to give us all his money.

Edit:
Zabuza'd

I mean yes and no, it's difficult but not impossible, I'm certain Kakashi was said to have a sharingan in MfD like in canon, so we know it's possible at least. You could also capture an enemy shinobi to forcibly research and interrogate them to steal their bloodline's weaknesses and just how they work. A dark way to go for sure, but kidnapping clan kids and secretly force breeding them to make a generation of ninja with that kekkai genkai loyal to your village is also a way to steal it.

I'm just saying, there's plenty of ways to go about stealing kekkai genakis and their secrets.
Speaking of Kakashi, in the battle it's mentioned that his opponent specifically did not bother to cover his eye. Almost as if his opponent knew that the eye didn't actually do anything, and was just for show/intimidation. Combined with the difficulty of eyeball transplantation, and how (I think, I might be thinking of a different story here) Kakashi didn't reveal he had the sharingan until after the Uchiha massacre (convenient in a time when Leaf had suddenly lost a major bloodline and was probably looking pretty weak), I think it's fairly likely that the eye was a fake that was intended to make Leaf seem stronger than it actually was.

I caught up!

...and have absolutely no idea what to do. This political mess is beyond me, so... good luck, voters.

I don't know how someone only reading the story updates perceives our competence, but be assured that not knowing what the hell to do is this thread's default state*. So don't be afraid to contribute, it's not like any of us are a priori experts on hidden village politics.

While I can appreciate that MfD looks like a very intimidating endeavor from the outside, the community is really nice and accepting. You definitely won't get your head bitten off for making suggestions or asking questions.

* Technically, the state is usually that we tend to know what we should do in the short-term and the very long-term, but the mid-term eludes us.

In other news: players are talking about doing the Summoner training now as a commitment to spending the XP later. We would be fine with letting you do that, but it means that your next 250 XP are locked into the Summoning stunt, no exceptions. Also, the training requires full-time dedication and took Keiko ~2 months; it would likely be longer for someone who does not have the Frozen Skein's "Monomaniacal" boost.

(Obviously, you don't acquire the stunt until after you finish the training.)

Full time learning means we're locked out of doing anything. Damn.

Alternately, owe Asuma one hell of a favour by using Monkey as the go-between. Assuming that's in any way possible.

We could split income. Hmm.

Edit: Hazo will do the learning alongside with Noburi. Once several weeks of testing is up, we'll know if Noburi can learn summoning. Then one of us drop out.

I'm not averse to owing Asuma a favor. Some debt is good debt, and Asuma strikes me as reasonable. He's good people.

Owing him one to make the Pangolin trade pause/cessation more convenient for the Pangolin isn't the greatest purchase IMO.

You mean like giving him our clan's vote? Plus bringing the Uchiha into the fold, and possibly the Hagoromo.

In fact, if we're going to back Asuma, we should demand something in return, if only to make him more comfortable with the idea.

Eh...the issue isn't really with getting the Pangolins their blood seals, it's with the massive delay we're going to have in getting Noburi signing the contract. He's going to have to confirm he's good with Kabuto, then train with Kabuto, then sign the scroll. That's going to be 3 months without his ability to do other stuff.

Hazou'd have to spend all his time learning, which means he can't do political stuff which he needs to do. Plus he has to spend the XP if he does this. PLUS Noburi can't learn Summoning and be Kabuto's guinea pig at the same time.

"We want to make sure that our interests as the Toad and Pangolin summoners and your interests as the Monkey summoner don't force us into conflict. It would advantage everyone to broker an alliance between our respective Clans; in this time of deep uncertainty and Akatsuki roaming free, unity is more important than ever.

We would like to propose that you train Noburi for the role of Toad Summoner. Additionally, we would appreciate it if you could act as a courier for our business transactions with the Pangolin over the next few months; as Keiko has just become wife of the Nara Clan Head, her time has become extremely valuable; this type of simple courier duty ought not to cause scheduling conflicts for her.

In exchange, we will:

1: Pay you a commission - say five percent? - on any transactions we route through you, in addition to paying for your Mission time.
2: Enter into negotiations with the Monkey clan regarding the sale of our military technology to them.
3: Speak favorably of you and the Monkeys to both the Toads and the Pangolins."

Edit:
If he agrees to the deal, perhaps work towards the big three plan with Monkey added as a fourth?

But of course. We must first confirm via Jiraiya's political notes that this is a viable play. After all, the Pangolins don't have an embassy with the Monkeys, for [?????] reasons.

*Somewhere, a certain woman in Hotsprings is rolling over in her grave*

Don't worry, she will get the ice she is owed eventually.

Considering we are likely not allowed to set foot in Hot Springs, what do people think about dropping large chunks of ice on her inn/grave from high up via Skywalkers?

HAZOU: *manic grin* A Goketsu always pays back his debts. Next stop: Mist.

In an alternative timeline in which the hivemind succeeded:

Jiraiya: You snatched the intelligence from my operatives.
Uplift: D'oh!

PSA:

We are offering a 5 XP bounty for anyone who will compile the mechanics for all known seals (see link in @faflec's signature) into a world-readable Google doc for easy reference.

We are offering an additional 1 XP per seal for FtD-style mechanics for each of those seals. Note that this only pays out if we actually use the mechanics. The point here is to move the cognitive load off the QMs, so we would ask the players to handle it without much input from us until the final idea is submitted for approval. (If we downcheck it, you are of course welcome to try again. The point is to get working systems without us getting exhausted.)

Asuma: "So my time's not valuable, huh?"

This. Aside from Asuma currently being a neutral Jonin, which means both busy and harder to influence, if he's the one we're about to push for Hokage, he's about to have Zero free time. Remember how burnt out J was after taking the hat, or how Hiruzen was gone for most of the first (I think it was year) after re-taking the hat. Having him teach us is right out, and it would need to be a very strong pitch for him to give up his time for anything else. And while it would be more efficient, I'm doubting Hazou's can give up 2 months right now to learn it.

We also promised the mayor of Sarubetsu to check in with her after capturing Arikada. Just saying.
