Major Grom: Plague Doctor

He/Him/They/Them
When a masked vigilante's killing spree throws a city into chaos, a renegade detective and his rookie partner are the only ones who can stop it.

For whatever reason, I haven't seen any discussion on this film anywhere on this site. So I decided to start one right here.

Major Grom: Plague Doctor (MGPD for short) is a Russian action-adventure film adapting a story from the comic book series Major Grom by Bubble Comics. Specifically, its first and most iconic "Plague Doctor" arc. In a way, this is Russia's first proper comic book movie.

Opinions on this film differ. Most publications do seem positive, though. The film owes a lot to certain Hollywood films, and YMMV how exactly this aspect influences MGPD. Some people (including those within my circle of web friends) see shades of propaganda in it, even, but that's a can of worms I'm extremely reluctant and unwilling to open.

I did enjoy this movie, for what it's worth. Even though some twists are not as unexpected when you are familiar with the general plot of the comic books (I didn't read them, but I knew a few things), the way that they were executed is what I found interesting.

On Netflix, MGPD performed very well on its premiere, and reviews outside Russia seem positive enough.
