Running of the Weasels (Mid-Autumn): A folk festival that has been incorporated into the new calendar by Theron Archippos. The Running of the Weaels is most popular among the young, especially young men and women, who hope to find lovers and marriages at the festival; its situation after the end of a summer campaign is not accidental. Usually presided over by an honored citizen, the festival is one day and consists of young men chasing women wearing weasel masks through the Gate of the Weasels while being in turn chased by their elders who scream at them that weasels are a poor animal to keep as a pet and beat the ones who fall behind with sticks. Afterwards there is a communal feast and a singing competition of the women, voted on by the men. The festival is dedicated to Demeter.

10/10 best festival

No time for an IC post right now, but here are the votes for Eugenios:

[X] [Taras] Accept the Tarentine terms.
[X] [Spring] The Return of Persephone.Favored by many married women, the return of Persephone is a re-enaction of the drama of Persephone's departure from Hades. Having been married happily to Hades for six months of the year, for in this interpretation she is not kidnapped but seduced away from her domineering mother, the young Persephone must say goodbye to her beloved husband and lord of the underworld. Persephone is presented here as a traditional woman, but also an icon of femininity, beloved by many women in Eretria for giving them someone to look up to. Embued in mystery and icons of the dead, the Return of Persephone is a festival that celebrates the transition from winter to spring and from death to life, the birth of new children, and draws heavily from the Eleusinian mysteries near Athenai, that famed mystery cult.
[X] [Winter] The Ascendency of Zeus Olympios. A monumental festival that celebrates the military victory of Zeus Olympios of the titans and the end of the titanomachia, the war against them. The ascendency has become increasingly popular in Eretria due to the influence of her olympic contestants who have been so shaken by the recently completed statue of Zeus at Olympia that have returned to their faith more vigorous than ever. The true supreme God of the Hellenes, Zeus deserves to be celebrated with vym and vigor in a military and civic parade. During the Ascendency, there is a battle among those representing the titans and olympians, with brawling and wooden swords, and a competition involving a ball which represents control of the heavens between two teams.
[X] [Honors] Pass the motion proposing the reward of a Wreath of Apollon and inscribing on the Painted Relief of Athene as the highest rewards that can be given to a citizen, to be decided by a 60% vote in the assembly for the wreath and an 80% vote for the Painted Stone.

Huh? I mean, I wouldn't sneeze at losing 120 (effectively 3.5% of our hoplites) in one battle, but Sparta's a lot bigger than us. Was it that they surrendered rather than fighting to the death causing a big loss of standing? I don't think I really understand the context of why this was such a coup.

Sparta can't really replace its hoplites. The Spartiates have low birth rates and are a professional leisure class that exists on top of a population of helots that outnumber them as much as seven to one. Even a small loss, in both prestige and manpower, can capsize them. When they were defeated at Leuktra and Mantinaea by the Thebans in the 4th century BCE, in the span of two battles they were completely destroyed as a power.

Further, the Spartans don't actually have that many more men than you. The Spartiate elite only numbers a few thousand (not sure about the actual numbers, it's probably declined by as much as half or more from the 8,500 figure in 500 BCE). There is a far larger number of allies, but the Spartans can't depend on them. They need to maintain their Spartiate elite or they will die, as they did in real life. If these men are killed they cannot really be replaced. They were already undermined by the earthquake in 464 BCE which killed many of them, and now are desperately trying to preserve those that remain.

Sparta is an extremely fragile power that is reliant on its allies to pay for its armies (the Peloponnesian League funds Spartan war wages), cushion its blows, and defend its flanks. From Sphacteria to the Battle of Mantinaea in 418 BCE when the Spartans defeat a coalition of rebellious Peloponnesian powers backed by Athenai during their "peace", there is a period in which the very reputation of Sparta is in doubt, and it looks as though the entire state will fall apart. Remember that it went into the Peloponnesian War to dismantle the Delian League but in OTL by 421 BCE, the first peace of the war, the Spartans have utterly failed in their objectives.

Also added in Lokri. My apologies again.

The arrival at Lokri was very cold (2d10+2=7) and I was not well-welcomed. I was not even allowed to meet with their xenologos. The general atmosphere was one of deep disdain for Eretria, and although there were many who were friends in the city, and I was hosted kindly by a number of aristocrats who were sympathetic to my mission, the government of the time was worried about the impression that my visit would bring and were generally suspicious of me. This was an unfortunate failure on my part, and perhaps they did not trust me as an honest character, but this seemed difficult to overcome. The city is strong and rich, but the people are nervous and expect war, and are paranoid of outsiders from Epulia, as they see me to be. A much-isolated polis in Italia, Lokri is swept with fear that Athenai will back their enemies and destroy them soon. Little more could be done, even the establishment of a permenant proxenos, which the people of Lokri saw as a pretext for spying.

News from the West!
/snip/
In Africa, Carthage's victory in Sardinia has been dampened by war against the Numidians, who have attacked the Carthaginian ally of Acholla, a Phoenician city on the coast, and forced their intervention. Carthage is now at war with a coalition of Numidian tribes who have briefly united against the encroaching Phoenician threat buttressed by mysterious gold which has been rumored to allow Carthage to fund multiple campaigns abroad at once.

HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS

People, great or small, are never content with what they have, they always desire more. Where will it stop?"
"Demand? What an strange thing to say Dareios. Forgive me if I am wrong, but I am quite sure no one among the heroes of this city ever demand such a thing. Rather it is us, the citizenty of proud Eretria, who desire to give unto them a symbol of our estem, gratitute and admiration."

[X] [Winter] The Conquest of the Sea. A grand festival involving mock sea battles and swimming contests which celebrates Poseidon's subjugation of all the creatures of the sea. Poseidon is a popular god across Italia and Sicilia, in sharp contrast to his sometimes muted worship among Ionians on the Mainland. The Conquest of the Sea, conducted in the chilly mid-winter, promises to bring fantastic seafood to the mouths of hungry Eretrians and celebrate the city's naval and commercial traditions as well as thank the Gods for the first voyage that Eretria ever undertook. The greatest part of the festival is the battle between rowers in painted boats representing the dolphins allied to Poseidon and the krakens who oppose him, who conduct a mock ram battle with their boats, trying to tip each other over in the harbor of the fifty masts.

[X] [Honors] The city has no masters except the Gods, none to worship except those in the heavens. To elevate men to such a degree threatens the rise of tyrants.

Just how many Spartan hoplites did they capture for this to be an utter catastrophe? I mean, most of the Spartan fleet was at Pylos, but aren't they more land-focused anyway and up to tons of campaigns in the north? I'm not really sure why they'd have loaded up this island with enough hoplites for this to be such a spectacular victory.

Well trusty wikipedia says 420 Hoplites and around 500 helots participated on the Spartan side with maybe a fourth of the force ending up killed. But the important part is that around 120 of those taken prisoners were actual Spartiates which was a comparable huge loss and goes to show how brittle a lot of those city states can be (and how a large portion of the Spartan army wasn't actually you know real Spartan's). In RL it was this capture and the threat of those prisoners, which you know were by definition leading citizens in Sparta, getting executed that marked the end of the Spartan invasions of Attika and the end of the first phase of the war.

And strategically speaking Pylos is an important port in Messenia and Messenia is where we get a lot of our bad impressions of Spartan treatment of Helots from since Sparta seems to have pretty ruthlessly oppressed a lot of the conquered people there and always feared rebellions, rebellions that Athenians could have easily supported from Pylos.

[] [Spring] The Courting of Ploutos. A more humorous and commercially oriented women's festival, the courting of Ploutos tells the story of Ploutos' attempts to flee from the bounds of marriage and love in favor of commerce. Celebrated in Eretria as the source of the city's trade wealth, Ploutos is surprisingly popular among widows and wealthy women because of this particular tale's affirmation of the importance of women to wealth. After fleeing from every potential mate, Aphrodite grows incredibly frustrated and crafts Nomisnia, a demigoddess who is good at creating wealth as Ploutos; the two immediately become competitors, further frustrating her. Finally, at last, Hermes intervenes, and convinces the two that they would have double the wealth if they were married, and at last the two accept, finding love in mutual success at business. The festival is celebrated through a dramatic re-enactment, dances between lovers, and a literal shower of drachmas given to the poorest women of the city.

"Skantarios, the aristoi have no monopoly of speech in the Assembly. It is only by the will of the ekklesia that honors could be nominated and given to a citizen. If the worthy are to be determined by all the citizens, how can the aristoi, who are only a tiny number, monopolize that function? I say you are too doubtful of the value and virtue of all of our citizens and their eagerness to recognize arete wherever it is displayed. The laurel wreath may be granted for any service to the city, and while the inscription on the Painted Rock of Athene is likely to go to the probolous or xenoparakletor or a strategos it may also only be given after they leave public life. The highest honor we can bestow is also a permanent retirement or accompanied by internment in the Cemetary of Heroes, so how can such men so honored plot to increase their power further?"

Going OOC for a moment, I think we should consider that what the spring festival vote is about isn't a mystery religion versus a popular festival or seasonal transition versus commerce or whatnot, not really.

It's about the role of women in our society.

Are they primarily mothers of children, rescued by their husbands from the demands of their own parents (but only for part of the year)? Or do they have agency in their own right?

:/

I feel you demean Persephone too much. She has as much agency to do what she will regardless of who she lives with.

It also has to do with which class of women is being celebrated. The married, they who belong to all classes? Or the widowed and/or rich?

Which should be celebrated? Family or Wealth?

Let us not be so hidebound to see material possessions be of greater value than the laughter of a child.

I do feel that the very existence of the Hippeis Eskhata might potentially make the consequences of Sphacteria several order of magnitude worse for Sparta, something they can't really afford consider how close to complete collapse they brought Sparta in OTL.

Basically, Pylos almost sound like a tailor made assignment for Erasmos Dion. There he and his cavalry can pretty much be unleashed without second toughts, and any damages to Athens reputation, and told to do their worse, burning farm under the cheers of the hillotes, who suddenly both have a great occasion to make a run for it and place to make that run too, instead of the wails of free farmers and killing whatever overseers the spartan might have left around to prevent the Messenians to try anything.

Both the damages to the structure keeping the Messenians in bondage on a day to day basis and the demonstration that Sparta grip is slipping is likely to make even those Messenians not entering into contact with the athenian horsemens far bolder too. At the very least we could see attempts to flee to Pylos multiply compared to OTL and a full blown Messenian revolt is far from impossible.

The speed of my vaccilation is, I think, mainly a function of subconsious fear of being the one to set us down the wrong path by 1 vote in close votes like this one.

Children are the future of Eretria.

If you really do not understand how the cry of a babe can turn into the voice of a statesman, then I cannot help you.

Besides, it is not like you have to care for the child, why not give a show of appreciation for those that do?

Sorry, but I still have to vote for the choice that continues nudging us towards women being allowed to participate in public life rather than the one that reinforces tradition keeping them cloistered at home.

Also, a big public celebration linked to a mystery cult seems weird to me (using cult in the sense of "bit of polytheistic religion devoting itself to one particular deity and/or one particular manner of worship," not its modern meaning).

I feel that we should honor Poseidon as Etria has been blessed by the sea these past few decades with our rich commerce and strong fleet. So lets give homage to him on that, and continue the cultural importance and training of our rowers during this festival.

Taras offered good terms for peace, keep ourselves and the rest free from Hellas entanglements as best as possible and try to over time build all the city states into allies if not friends so that we can counter outsiders such as Carthage, Samnits and Romans in the future.
