Magical Girl Escalation Taylor (Worm/Nanoha)

[X] Back in the Saddle, Part 2 – The storm sewers, of course. There's no telling where in that twisting labyrinth Typhon has holed up. Explore the tunnel system and see if you can find the villainous bio-Tinker's bases. Write-in for whom to bring with you (Samantha is coming by default).
-[X] Write-in: Ask Chevalier if he would agree to accompanying us.
[X] Ready to Rumble – Because of course villains have nothing better to do than cause trouble. Tensions between the Winter Hill gang and MS-13 are coming to a boil yet again, and the Protectorate is keeping a watchful eye on the situation. Be ready to jump in if a fight breaks out.
-[X] Send Dragon an email (PS ensuring the delivery is secure) letting her know we've got a way to power the radio. We're too busy to do anything about it right now, and she wanted to be informed before we contacted them again anyways. Request she have a first contact/Endbringer info package ready to transmit when we contact her in a week or so. Have PS include some basic info about the group we'll be contacting so Dragon can focus on the most relevant stuff for her message..

So wait...why are we bringing the unarmored ranged based dakkamancer whose powers are limited inside a sewer unless they want to risk a cave in rather than the super tanky knight?

...Wait. Why the hell are you guys voting to bring Miss Militia along to a freaking sewer? That is such a poorly thought out idea.
Because just like canon!Taylor, you're apparently really bad at making friends. :p

Everyone please vote for this instead of Miss Militia.

You all do realize MM can make a LOT more than just guns, right?

She has PLENTY of close-quarters options and experience (original Wards team member, remember, she's been at this more than a decade). That said, the vote is asking if she or any other protectorate heroes want to join us. She can easily say "no, but I can send this guy as backup."

Granted MM's personality type, she's likely to want to join, but she's ALSO not the type to go into a situation like the sewers without considerable backup.

And given this is something the PRT/Protectorate's been working on for a while, and this is their first major lead... Yea, it's likely we'll get at least 1/2 of the city's Protectorate's roster.

Subvote for Back in the Saddle, Part 2:
-[] Going down the storm sewers to look for the monsters in an objectively suboptimal idea, in the same manner as entering the Xenomorph Hive - you never know then the monster drops on you out of the walls or the ceiling. We will examine the known exit entrances for traces of monsters Wide Area Search can pick up on, then follow the infrastructure from the air, with our companions in tow, examining the underground with WAS.
-[] We will also pre-arrange a communication line with the Protectorate, and send them updates on the location and the existence of monster traces. "Corner of York Street and N 16th St. Traces lead in the southern direction. Proceeding along the N 16th."

WAS won't go underground if you're in the air or on the street. You need to be inside the storm sewers to use it to find the Beasts.
Curses! Foiled again!

With the Protectorate and PRT distracted with the Winter Hill Gang/MS-13 debacle, they cannot afford a manpower-heavy search, too.
I am still adding a subvote for checking the known entrances for possible Beast traces, just so that we know what to look for once we're inside.

...Seriously folks. WHY ARE WE VOTING TO BRING A SQUISHY RANGED HERO INTO A CQC SITUATION?
Because there is an attendum, "or any other Protectorate member". In effect, the vote is not supposed to bring in MM exclusively, or preferentially. The vote is supposed to be reaching for the Protectorate to gain an additional ally of their choosing.

For all we know, they actually have the beginnings of the task force for dealing with the Beasts already, and will lend us someone suitable for the task at hand.

Indeed, as has been said, MM power is more than just guns. She can make melee weapons, and there are guns that are precision weapons, suited for close quarters/urban combat.

-[X] Use Wide Are Search in conjunction with Recursion Field to search the sewers. This should cut down on potential enemies as well as on travel time, since you can just make shortcuts at your own convenience this way. Switch off and coordinate with Samantha, so that one of you can put up a new field the instant the other drops theirs. Focus on finding the Tinker's lab instead of the Tinker, because running into the latter while he is in the former is a BAD IDEA.

-[X] Consider examining the known or suspected entrances that were used by the Beasts in the past, to identify their traces if those are detected with Wide Area Search. See if it's possible to use it to narrow down the search parameters. We do not want to to be surprised by a Beast laying in wait.

Indeed, as has been said, MM power is more than just guns. She can make melee weapons, and there are guns that are precision weapons, suited for close quarters/urban combat.

If that's the rationale, then we should take the Privateers. They have short- and long-range weapons as well as a hive-mind. Combine that with PS's scanning and there is no way for an ambush to surprise us.

edit: plus it would allow us to actually work as a team for once AND gain the Privateers good PR with the heroes.

Storm drains are not cramped little tunnels, they are big enough to drive a car through, with long straights and sweeping curves. All thr better to carry floodwater away.

Just look at The Italian Job (1969) for a look at what an actual storm drain looks like.

Because I keep getting confused about who is where and in what state.

I'd appreciate both corrections and information about those I haven't covered, especially the Philadelphia Capes. I don't have the time to wade through all two hundred and sixty pages right now.

  • Guardian Beast of the Shield: This is the tankiest tank who ever tanked. I made a joke way, way, way back at the end of Arc 1 that in the 1 out of 900-something chance they rolled Shield that was a maternal female cat they would have their own Siberian. Older teen would also work; Momberian is more accurate, but Sisberian rolls better off the tongue.
  • GB of the Sword: Samantha.
  • GB of the Tome: A support class with buffs and healing. Or, if you grab twin Tomes, I will give the option to have one be pure defensive support and the other pure offensive support. It doesn't really work as well if they're player-designed as if they're randomly generated, though, since all the good stuff is random bonus.
  • GB of the Rifle: Ranged class. Nothing super pretty about it since Calamity Witch is a lot more powerful, but if you give it to Infinite Enhancement or Transcendent Gadgeteer, it gives them some firepower.
  • GB of the Mask: Recon and infiltration. Basically the Stranger of the group. Also like most Strangers, very squishy if it gets caught.
  • GB of the Gear: The scientist and Tinker. Like Rifle and Calamity Witch, this is a much-diluted version of Transcendent Gadgeteer.

Glory Girl and Panacea are in PRT custody in Boston, though the Protectorate is offering induction into the Wards and subsequent probation in exchange for not going to juvie (assault with deadly force and battery with a parahuman ability for GG, accessory to the same for Panacea). Purity and Crusader are in New Orleans. The Merchants are in Brockton Bay still; they like the shithole. Oni Lee is dead thanks to Animos if I recall my plans correctly. Bonesaw is in Houston.

For the other capes, Sere is in Philly and all things good. Velocity I think is dead, but I'm not 100% sure right now and don't have my notes open. Assault is in Chicago. Flambe, Cherry Bomb, and Bouncer are the Philly Wards. The others I can think of are all OCs, which means mostly Philly.

And might I say that I really like Lung's status, Bonesaw's status, and the rest of the Slaughterhouse 9's status and location.

So their status should read something like Alive and Detained? I don't think Alive and Probed quite works.

I also noticed that Eidolon is only listed as Alive, but not Well. Nice touch.

Yes? But it remains an ambush rich scenario that you should preferentiially bring a Brute or other high defense hero who can tank being ambushed from an unexpected direction by melee heavy opponents.

For those who aren't keeping track, here's the most recent change in the Skills menu for Tim:
  • Basic Device – Build Storage Devices that supplement spellcasting.
    • Advanced Device (5 points) – Build Intelligent, Armed, and Boost Devices that advise and support their mages in addition to assisting spellcasting.
That's right. We've learned a 2nd skill already and have opened a new option.

Omake: Safety Measures
(Point goes to Tim's Strong Shield)

If there is a truth an engineer knows well, is that the universe hates the engineer. Not because of some slight - but it's the natural progression of laws of nature. Never in a trillion years will a steel beam spontaneously increase its durability to withstand an increase in its load. The nature sides with the inner flaw.

As the prototype mana battery was leaking what seemed to be the beams of light from random points all over its circumference, Tim had an inkling this was not going to end well. Deciding to exercise the better part of the valor, Tim had leaped away from the testing ground and throwing a shield up behind him. Not a moment too soon, as the battery had decided to scatter the red-hot casing fragments all over the place.

After his ears stopped ringing, Tim got up and went to the ex-battery, nursing his bruised ego and the left foreleg.

"Ow. That... didn't end well. Sextant, scan the wreckage and tell me what went wrong."
"Scanning. Analysis complete, Master. The storage remains exhibit anomalous heat readings."

"Tim! Tim, are you alright?!" was heard the worried call from the outside, followed by its owner, the Calamity Witch. "What happened?"

"The battery seemed to have gone and exploded on me. Not sure why, though. Sextant claims that the storage remains exhibit..."
"Anomalously high heat readings, Master."
"Yeah, that. So the battery started leaking heat, and then exploded. Luckily, my shield had managed to protect me. Nothing more serious than a bruised foreleg, I think. Well that and my ego."

"Any ideas why it happened?"

"Not sure. I mean, you charged it not five minutes ago as a test. It certainly was working, if for a short while."
"Oh. Wait. I have Flare affinity, which is heat and radiant energy, more or less. I have a guess - check the emergency intake mana filter."
"If I can find it... Aha! Oh. It's borked. So, I guess it means we didn't manage to ensure the mana stored was sufficiently neutral for the storage to hold."
"And it started heating it all up."
"Well, at least we know what went wrong this time. I'll have to redo most of the work and rework the filters, but other than that I'm good. Mind you, it wouldn't have happened if we were going slower."
"Call me when you need charging again. Also, it's a good thing you had that shield up - if you have a bruised leg now, without it you would have had it broken, at least."
"Yeah. Next time, how about you cast a barrier over the testing area or something, just in case?"
"I'll see what I can do."

I shall just sit here amused that still no one has any clue what the Simurgh wants in this quest.
She, obviously, wants to become a magical girl.
Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Mindfucker, haijimaru yo~
She can make melee weapons, and there are guns that are precision weapons, suited for close quarters/urban combat.
And now I want to see MM fighting slimes with a sword like in a RPG and doing quite well at it.

And about the nine. What happened with Burnscar and Cherish? Where they with the S9 when they dided or are they alive?
Since they joined the S9 recently.

1. FTFY.
2. Ah, the classic tech problem of not enough cooling/heat conduction.
