Fox's Grimoire Prologue
Prologue

Seeing my mother rooting around in the cupboard I grabbed the milk preemptively. She went to speak as she turned "Could you..."

I pour some milk into the small ceramic bowl she holds in her hands "Get some milk for the fairies?" and rolled my eyes.

"You roll your eyes but someday you'll see!" She said with a wink

Present day

As I set 'the fairy bowl' down I'm feeling down. It's my first birthday since my mother's death. She was a wonderful woman who raised me the best she could. Even through the hard times. Especially through the hard times.

I remember her helping me with my homework even when she was tired from cleaning up after guests. Sure she was a bit superstitious, and made offerings to fairies, but I wouldn't have traded her for the world.

I look back at the unopened package that came in the mail today with her name on it. After a moment to brace myself I think I'm ready to open it, along with the letter it came with, and maybe finally start to move on.

I open the letter first.

To Amy Owens, my beloved daughter

If you are reading this, I'm no longer with you. I'm sorry I won't be able to make your 18th birthday and explain everything in person.

This must have arrived with a package. Inside is your inheritance and the form our family's blessing will take.

I'm getting ahead of myself though. Long ago our line was cursed. I don't know how or why our distant ancestor was cursed but we were always to die young and weak.

I had the fortune good, and ill, to meet someone who said they could reverse our fortunes. Unfortunately they wanted to wait till the next generation and said the price would fall to them.

I can't say I'm sorry that I took the deal though I was able to delay the price till you turned 18.

With all my love and hopes your mother Angie Owens

I hear a ripping noise as the paper covering the package bursts open revealing a leather bound book which starts flapping through the air as if it were a bird.

I reflexively pluck it out of the air as I hadn't yet processed the strangeness and thought it was falling. Once I process that the thing was moving on it's own I briefly panic and try to drop it. It's sticking to my hands and worryingly beginning to glow.

When it builds up to a flash I find myself in unfamiliar woodland with bushes next to a path but I can see a few silhouettes of buildings in the distance over the trees. It appears to be early morning twilight as the sky is visibly brightening.

I'm also still holding the book which, much to my panic, decides to move again. It gently bats at my hands till I let go then pages start quickly turning till it stops on an entry saying;

Henshin: You are changed into a thrice formed being. Two forms inhumane one form human in appearance. You must choose!

My mind seems to be gripped, and forced to focus on the choice. Images flash through my head before it settles on the gray fox.

Once my focus is returned to me I feel a painless heat build in my chest starting to spread throughout my body before it settles in what feels like an instant and I know how to change into both an adult gray fox and a fox kit.

I eye the book now lying innocently on the floor of the path I find myself on warily for a moment before I give myself a check over to try, and see if anything else has changed. To my relief I find little changed aside from my black hair now having ashen silver highlights. Worst case if I decide I don't like it I can dye it.

I clap my hands on both of my cheeks to get myself in gear. I've just been teleported, and changed by an obviously magic book, and I was focused on my hair. Not the time. I can find a mirror later.

Looking back at the book, with a scowl on my face, I finally have the opportunity to read the title. In big bold golden letters it says "Celestial Grimoire' then the subtitle says "second edition a complete compendium"

Angelic King Prologue
I didn't expect to wake up considering my last memory was bleeding out as a piece of rebar was sticking out of my chest. The wire holding down the cargo of the truck in front of me snapped, and I happened to be in just the wrong place at just the wrong time.

So I'm pleasantly surprised to wake up. Guess I was wrong about there being no afterlife. I open my eyes to see I stand on a thick silken rope. Looking around my stomach drops when I realize there are more ropes and together they form the pattern of a spider's web.

"There is no need to panic, little one. You have died, but I have a proposition for you. If you'd like, you may turn it down and go through the usual method of reincarnation, but if you accept you may become something greater than you have known."

Turning to the voice I see a massive spider the size of a three story building. Strangely it exudes a feeling of peace. The spider seems to be covered in a fine fur coating that is raven black, and when the light from distant stars hits it it shines purple.

"Who are you, and what would this deal involve?" The strange sense of peace emanating off of the spider allows me to calmly analyze the situation and respond with reason.

"I am Yaldabaoth: The Great Spider. I manage the back end of reincarnation, and lay the foundations for new worlds to be made.

"The deal I offer is one you should be familiar with. I offer you to become a Jumper, and your own chain. I was recommended this as a source of entertainment by a colleague. So I'm looking for a volunteer to become my Jumper, and allow me to watch their adventures. I'm most interested in what choices you will make now that power is presented to you."

"
Was it ever a question? Especially considering the alternative is to be reincarnated in the 'standard' way. I'm already dead. So I've nothing to lose."

"Haha, that's the spirit."

Next thing I know I'm holding a tablet computer with only a pair of apps on the dashboard. The first being labeled Jumpdocs, the second Supplements.

I start by clicking the first, and it opens to a massive list, and a search bar. Luckily I know exactly where I want to go first. I type in Overlord, and begin to make my build. I start with drawbacks, choosing Foreigner which makes me stand out as a foreigner, and Embroiled in Politics which makes me get involved in the political stage of the New World.

Halfway through I realize I won't be able to afford everything I want so I open the Supplements app, and select the Universal Drawbacks Supplement. I decide to go full on in this new life, selecting Setting Amnesia which makes me forget about the setting I've entered besides the memories I get from my Origin, Start at the Beginning which makes me start my new life from the beginning with my memories slowly flowing in till I reach the start of the jump, The Long Road which makes me stay a full lifetime, up to 100 years if I'm immortal, finally I take Limited Storage fully upgraded so that I will have a backpack in place of a Cosmic Warehouse.

For my Overlord build I end up with an Angel, Spiritualist, with a floating island city the size of Tokyo as my Guild Base. I'll call it The Isle of Birds. Under name I put Viridian as I don't want to use my old name in my new life.

For my Warehouse Brand Backpack I pick: a Universal Power Point, Water Spigot, Wifi Router, FirstAid Kit, Travel Toolkit, Laptop, Food Rations, A Tent that comes with a Bedroll, and double the space the Backpack can hold to be 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet. Asking my benefactor was nice enough to let me change the backpack into a messenger bag.

When I'm finished I see among my options that I can make my first jump my bodymod and select it immediately.

With that I signal that I'm done, and with a flash of movement Yaldabaoth scuttles up to me and begins wrapping me in webbing before I can react. Once the webbing covers me completely my vision fades away.

Viridian Storm

As I sit on my throne I contemplate on my recurring dreams. They seem to have been getting more and more real to the point I have to wonder if they are memories of a past life with how vivid they are. It's enough to distract me from the end of my favorite game. Yggdrasil, a VRMMO in which I played as a Grand Archon Lord of The Spirits, and rule over the Isle of The Birds, a city style Guild Base the size of Tokyo itself. I'm only brought out of my contemplation by the voice of the woman who practically raised me as my nanny.

"Are you sure you don't want me to look for another game for us to play? I know you loved this one but surely you'd rather play something new now that it will end any minute now." She plays as a homunculus Bard, modeled off of the looks of Galadriel, from Lord of The Rings. With silver hair, long pointed ears, blue robes with a green inner lining matching the innerwear, silver bracers and greaves, and a matching silver flute.

"I'm sure I have a feeling something will happen when the clock strikes midnight." It's true I've felt the certainty building and now with minutes to spare I'm absolutely certain.

"Fine we can spend the time reminiscing on our adventures I suppose." I love this woman. She's been more of a mother to me than my own flesh, and blood one, even if my blood mother thinks of her as "only the help". She has been looking after me for my entire life, always making sure I'm eating healthy. Offering me a shoulder to cry on when I needed it. And even joined me in my games so I wouldn't feel lonely.

Before I know it we've talked the rest of the remaining time away, and I feel something click within me. I remember who I was in full. The dreams really were memories of a past life, and I just got the last one. The one of my death and an offer for a new life.

I come out of my stupor to see the NPCs who had been lifelessly standing around but a moment before talking with one another, and my Nanny looking around at them with wide eyes. I take in a deep breath and feel my folded wings brush against the throne. I suppose I should say something to my subjects. Seeing as from what I can hear from their perspective the world was scheduled to end.

I clap my hands gathering attention. "My people I have full faith that The Great Spider has blessed us this day! Rather than an ending I see a new beginning! Shall we let it be squandered or shall we grasp it with both hands!?!?" My short speech is met by cheers in the affirmative.

Game Set chapter 1
David Davis

I search the app store with bored eyes before something interesting shows up. It's an app called Idle Adventurer and the art shows a classic TTRPG character sheet and little sprites of wizards, warriors, druids, and so on fighting monsters out of myth and legend. This should make this boring job that much more entertaining. It's a bonus that it will keep going without interfering with my job.

I work security for a local "neighborhood watch" on the doorstep of a rather nondescript house. I don't know exactly what goes on in there even if I have a good idea as I'm not dumb enough to ask. It's a well-paying gig but I do get bored often. So, if this game is good, it will be a blessing.

I hit download, and I could swear it didn't even take a second to load.

"Hello user. Please input the name you would like to be known by. ______ ______"

I input my nickname I go by for those who come by here Mister Clean. They call me that because I'm a big white guy with a bald head, but I don't mind. I even take it as a complement. Mister Clean sounds professional. Plus, I like to think it's at least in part thanks to my style of dress. Nice, sharp, and clean.

With that done the game starts up. I'm a bit surprised to find my sprite bears a resemblance to me. A little mini-me. What a funny coincidence that the default sprite looks like me. Looking further there are 4 buttons on the screen: one says Character Sheet, one says Shop, another says Quests, and one at the bottom says Train.

I open the Character Sheet first:
Mister Clean
Hp: 6/6
Class: None
Spell Slots: N/A
Strength: 13
Dexterity: 11
Constitution: 10
Intelligence: 7
Wisdom: 10
Charisma: 8
Equipment: Snazzy Suit, Butterfly Knife, Packed Lunch, Enchanted Cell Phone, Wallet holding 120$

I'm getting a little weirded out. Not only does the sprite look like me, he's also carrying the same things I am, wearing the same clothes, and counting my money I see he has the same amount in his wallet. Though it is extra weird it says the cell phone is enchanted. Out of morbid curiosity I click the next button.

I see a window not too dissimilar to an online mall, only the items for sale are strange. I see a wineskin on sale for a cup worth of human blood for instance. A bit weirded out I select it and suddenly feel woozy while I hear a soft thump in front of me. Looking down I see the exact wineskin as was in the image.

Growing oddly numb to the weirdness I feel compelled to continue. I click Quests:

RedRum: If you want to be an Assassin, all it takes is a little stealthy murder, and meeting the stat requirements: Str 12, Dex 12, Con 6, Int 11, Wis 6

Hallelujah: If you want to be a Cleric, show your devotion to a god or concept through a significant charitable act, and meet the stat requirements: Str 6, Dex 3, Con 6, Int 6, Wis 9, Cha 6

Nature's Gifts: If you want to be a Druid, show your devotion to the Earth Mother by serving nature in some way, and meet the stat requirements: Str 9, Dex 6, Con 7, Int 3, Wis 6, Cha 6

Beat em up: If you want to be a Fighter, all you have to do is win a straight out, and out fight, and meet the stat requirements: Str 6, Dex 16, Int 15, Wis 6, Cha 6

Look at the shadows dance: If you want to be an Illusionist you have to tap into the shadow plane, learn to harness it's powers, and match the stat requirements: Str 3, Dex 6, Int 9, Wis 6, Con 6, Cha 6

Magic Fingers: If you want to be a Magic User, study the currents of magic till you can figure out how to store them in your mind, and meet the stat requirements: Str 12, Dex 6, Con 9, Int 9, Wis 13, Cha 17

Smite the Evil: If you want to be a Paladin, show you have what it takes to protect the innocent, strike down the wicked, and meet the stat requirements: Str 12, Dex 6, Con 9, Int 9, Wis 13, Cha 17

Far Ranging: If you want to be a Ranger, learn the wilds, show your marksmanship, and meet the minimum stat requirements: Str 13, Dex 6, Con 14, Int 13, Wis 14, Cha 6

Step Lightly: If you want to be a Thief, simply steal something of value without being caught, and meet the stat requirements: Str 6, Dex 9, Con 6, Int 6, Cha 6

After reading the quests, and putting off the choice of class, I turn my sight to the last button. I hit Train, and a microphone icon pops up. I try it out. "Train Dexterity." and an obstacle course appears in the app which my sprite starts to run. Speeding through the course at triple actual speed. I start to wonder why I don't feel any different but then I notice the text of the button has changed to Collect improvements: +0 Dexterity.

David Davis later that day

I exited the app after that discovery and hid the wineskin in my jacket. Luckily, I wasn't caught slacking on my phone with an old timey wineskin next to me. That wouldn't have ended well. Honestly the people I work from are a bit scary. I'm pretty sure they are having illicit dealings in the house I guard, considering how one set of people enter with a duffle bag and another leaves with the same duffle bag. I'd hate to have to explain that one to them. Especially as what I'm pretty sure was blood loss must have looked an awful lot like drunkenness.

Now that I'm in the comfort of my own home I take the wineskin out, to sate my curiosity I try a sip. It's got a nice fruity taste to it. Reminds me of a strawberry wine I once drank with my sister Hannah. Man do I miss her.

I take a longer sip and brace myself before opening the app. Seeing my little sprite still running the obstacle course. There is a difference however. The button now reads: Collect improvements: + 1 Dexterity. I hit the button to see what happens.

I feel a bit more agile, and sure on my feet. I check my stats and see that the Dexterity stat has gone up. I then set my sprite to train Intelligence cause it feels insulting that that's my lowest stat. Accurate but insulting.

Now to figure out which class I should aim for, and I will be using this app to the full ability I can. I can feel my long slumbering ambition waking up. It feels ravenous.

It may be the wine speaking with sweet whispers of better times, but I think I'll go with Assassin. I know just who to go after. I go to the shop, and find a poison not of this world called Spider's Kiss, it induces a deep sleep, where he will waste away in hours as if he'd been in a coma for months. It will serve him right for how he treated Hannah.

David Davis Three days later

I wait till he's not looking to put the pellet in the basterd's drink, and watch it dissolve. "Oh would you look at the time? Sorry Micheal I have to get going but before I go how about a toast in Hannah's memory? To Hannah!"

"To Hannah!" I almost feel bad for the poor fool as he takes his shot, but then I remember how the utter scum treated her on her deathbed. He didn't even bother to pay for treatment. I had to cover the payment for her hospice.

I leave the bar with a clean conscience and check the phone the sprite seems to have gotten to + 4 Intelligence. I smile. Now I just have to wait for him to croak, and I'll qualify to be an Assassin.
