Link in Warhammer Fantasy
OP

Aranfan

Team Plasma Grunt
This world is a fine mess.

I'd be hard pressed to think of a worse one we've seen.

Someone should do some… Farore, what are you doing?

Farore no!

Farore YES!

-

You grasp the plank tightly for dear life. There's only so much one can do when lightning destroys one's ship.

The world becomes noise and sound and incomprehensible movement as a wave crashes over you. In your desperate state you are so busy being thankful you came back up to the surface that you don't even notice the sudden but familiar weight on your back.

Another wave crashes down upon you, and you shiver and gasp for air. Holding onto your plank for dear life.

Eventually the storm passes, and you fall unconscious. Insensate to the world, you drift into an active port city.

You wake up groggily. The first think you notice is that you are comfy. This is a nice bed. You decide to lay in it awhile, it has been too long since you slept in.
Shoot, I forgot about the language barrier. Nayru?
By the time you wake up again you can tell from the lighting that a considerable amount of time has passed, at least several hours. You sit up a little and look around.
Why should I?
The first thing you notice is the furnishings are wood, and better made wood than many you've seen. Most of the craftsmanship is top notch. The second thing you notice is the Master Sword.
Link'll be up shit creek without a paddle if he can't speak any languages. Come on, I'll owe you.
You stare. You could have sworn it washed away with the castle. How did it get here?
Fine. First language spoken to him he'll know in full.
"Yer up. Good. How you feel? It ain't often an elf child drifts inta port."
Learned Eltharion (all dialects)
You look at the short man who can't be much taller than you, but who has a prodigious amount of facial hair. That wasn't Hyrulean, but you understood it anyway. You pat yourself down, then give him a thumbs up.

"Heh. You weren't doing so well when Sister Mavis pulled you out of the drink. Good to see my work is as fine as ever. Yer clothes and effects are over there." He gestures to the Master Sword, and a second look shows your clothing and your shield. "Sorry to say the bow was beyond saving, you'll need to get another one."

You nod. The fellow frowns in thought and concern.

"Yer in the city of Bordeleaux in the umgi kingdom of Brettonia. Does that mean anything to you?"

You shake your head.

"Tch. And yer parents?."

You look down, before shaking your head firmly.

"I see. Well then, you should know to avoid the Forest of Chalons to the east, it's full of beastmen and grobi." He spits. "Avoid the damned dukedom of Mousillon up north. My brother found a mighty doom there five years ago, and it be no place for a child." He strokes his beard. "If yer willing to stick around I'll probably be able to find you some gainful work through Mavis, least till you get yer feet under you. She'd also be able to teach you Brettonian. [I assume you can't speak it if you've never heard of the place?]"

You, indeed, don't understand the language the fellow switched to.

[] Take your stuff and head out into the world.
[] Agree to speak to Mavis about earning some money and learning the local language.

[x] Agree to speak to Mavis about earning some money and learning the local language.

"Alright, ye should have some water and rest some more. Mavis'll be here soon.

You accept some water from him and pause after drinking some, it tastes weird? You look at him.

"Ah, don't worry, I only put enough wine in the water to kill miasmites."

You don't think you should have wine yet, and your dubious look at the water seems to tip the guy off.

"If your that concerned about alcohol, you washed up in the wrong port. Don't worry, have a rest and Mavis'll be here soon. Can I get yer name?"

"Link." You say as you finish the cup.

"Alrik."

-

You wake up a little later to see Alrik gone, and take the opportunity to get dressed. You stop as you here some words by the door. One is Alrik, but the other is someone else? Sounds like a girl's voice.

"[...and he can't speak Brettonian at all?]"

"[Nope. Stared when I tried it. Might well be his first trip off Ulthuan.]"

"[I'll have to teach him Brettonian then. What about the weapon?]"

"[Heirloom. I'd bet me beard on it. Way he acted when he saw it and when I asked 'im 'bout his parents… no way he'll let himself be separated from it any length of time.]"

"[Shame. One so young… if he won't part with it I might not be able to get him admitted to the orphanage.]"

There is a knock on the door.

"You decent lad?" Alrik asks.

You make a noise of assent.

The door opens and Alrik and a human woman in strange clothing walk in. The woman's eyes linger for a moment on the master sword strapped to you back, and her eyes tighten before she shifts to look you in the eyes.

"Hello child. I am Sister Mavis of Order of the Bleeding Heart."

You introduce yourself.

"Well Link. I can't in good conscience let a child out into the world alone. If you are willing to leave your weapons with Alrik until you leave, I can offer you a spot in the orphanage. If not I can try to find you odd jobs around town. If you like, I can also teach you to speak Brettonian, so you'll be able to get around here."

[] Enter the Orphanage and leave your sword and shield with Alrik. You will learn Brettonian.

-[X] Learn Brettonian

"Fishing? With what tools? All ye have are a sword, a shield, and the clothes on yer back. Do you expect to wade into the water and just grab them?" Alric asks incredulously.

You shrug. Sounds fine.

Mavis and Alric share a look. Then Alric does a double take and shakes his head.

"[No.]"

Mavis' look turns disappointed.

"[I said no!]" Alric says firmly.

Mavis' expression doesn't change.

"[I am not buying an elgi's tools.]"

Mavis doesn't even move.

"[I know he's just a child, that isn't the point woman!]" Alric gesticulates.

The green eyed woman seems unmoved by whatever Alric is saying. You look between them curiously.

"[Why should I buy it anyway. You should be almost as rich as I am!]" He waves his hands. Then rubs his nose. "[What am I saying, of course you donated it all as soon as we got back from that damn city.]"

Alric turns to you as Mavis' expression shifts to a satisfied one.

"A kid like you could catch ill doing it like that. I'll buy you a fishing rod and some hooks." He shoots Mavis a disgusted look, "Pay me back when you can."

He stomps out, grumbling about not being drunk enough for this shit.

Mavis smiles as he leaves. "Once he returns I can show you to the fishing spots. I should be able to find lodging for you, either in one of our shelters or if they won't take you then my friend Gaston should be willing to put you up for me. I'll also show you to where the language lessons will be."

-

Alric returned with a fishing rod, a tackle box containing both fishing hooks and some bait, and a very fine lightweight knife. "Here, everything ye need te fish. You owe me one gold crown." Mavis glares at him from behind, "And don't look at me like that woman, if you wanted him to have shoddy cheap human work that'll break in a decade you should have had Gaston buy it." Alric retorts without turning around.

Mavis sighs, "Alright, fair enough. Come Link. Lets show you the fishing spots and the orphanage where the language lessons will be. If I can't negotiate lodging, I'll introduce you to Gaston as well."

-

The fishing goes well. You get more than enough to feed yourself, and selling the extra gives you a small profit even after your various living expenses.

The orphanage where you learn Brettonian is a place of laughing children. They seem happy here, which is good. The lessons are somewhat slow, but you haltingly get to know other children. Most of them were orphaned by goblins, orcs, or beastmen. Who are apparently a constant menace. Many of the children play games of "knights and goblins" where heroic knights save people from evil foes. Apparently everyone wants to be a knight.

Still, about a month later you've learned enough of Brettonian to get by, and you are starting to get bored. Its strange, once upon a time you could while the days away, but ever since you set off to rescue your sister, you've felt this restless need to do things.

You consider where to go.

[] The forest east is apparently full of gribbles that need killing.
[] Alric mentioned a place up north called Mousillon, which sounds intriguing.

OOC: Odd Jobs would have revealed the war below, and generated some more money on average. In other news, I have finalized Link's class and career.

Forest of Chalons 2.1
[x] The forest east is apparently full of gribbles that need killing.

You nod to yourself, the forest not far outside the city is supposed to be the readiest source of gribblies that threaten the city of Bordeleaux. So you'll venture out to the forest and find out what all the fuss is about.

Decided, you ready your equipment, and head out.

As you near the fishing spot you are greeted by several people, and you wave back at them. Then you move past the fishing spot and some of the other regulars there look at you with concern briefly, before shrugging it off.

Reaching the city gate, you nod at the guards before setting eyes on the forest, and heading out.

It doesn't take you all that long to get there. But you are somewhat disappointed when you don't immediately find anything of interest. After about three hours exploring, you're even somewhat bored.
Don't worry, I got your back.
Almost as soon as you finish thinking that, a boar breaks through the foliage. It snorts at you aggressively, and paws the ground with its left forehoof.

Forest of Chalons 2.2
[x] Back away slowly

You came here to fight gribbles, not wild animals. You carefully make no aggressive moves and back away slowly. The boar stares you down, snorting occasionally, but it seems willing to let you leave its territory in peace.

-

After ambushing a fox for food, you set up a small camp and fire to make lunch. The lunch is mostly uneventful, but as you are winding down and getting ready to strike camp to continue exploring, you hear someone coming.

Actually three someones as they emerge from the foliage. The three of them are disheveled looking men. One of them has an axe, one of them has a bow, and the last one has a sword. The one with the sword speaks first.

"What've we got here? A child, all lost in the woods? That's a right shame. Right Leroy?"

"Yeah boss, a right shame." The bow wielder, Leroy, responds before giggling.

"So Arnou, why don't we help guide this poor lost child back to civilization."

"But Maxim," The one with the axe whines, "I'm hungry."

Maxim shakes his head, before turning to you, "You see what I have to work with? I want to help you kid, really I do, but my friends... alas. If you can make it worth our while, we can guide you back to civilization, but if you can't, well… Arnou is hungry."

You blink and stare.

"Eh, boss, I think he may be stupid." Leroy says after an awkward moment passes.

A pause before Maxim sighs.

"Alright kid, I'll be blunt, your money or your life. I really will help you back out of the forest, but my buddies and I gotta eat."

You draw your sword and shield.

[] Charge at one of the three.
-[] Which?
[] Let them come to you.
