Light in the Dark (Fleet Quest)

Was just pondering what to vote for when I decided to check and sadly the vote was closed. Sad face.

I am very curious to see how strike fighters end up working in this setting. There are a few ideas I've seen work before and I do have a fondness for them myself, so I'm glad a carrier won.

The Exemplar
[X] Plan: The Boss
-[X] Elora Ripley
-[X] Female
-[X] Your Charisma.
-[X] UNS Exemplar

You are Commodore Elora Ripley of the UNSC and captain of the UNS Exemplar. You weren't always destined to be so for you were once the scion of one of greater oligarchical families that rule the United Nations in all, but name. But you ended that path in your life when you signed up with the United Nations Space Command and changed your name from Maelei to Ripley.

You originally joined to escape a life that had been scripted for you before you were even born, but since then, you have come to believe in the ideals of the United Nations. Even if the vast organisation itself had become a corrupt thing that had casted aside its nominal ideals, you believe in the idea of liberty, of freedom, of democracy. The right to choose your own future and not have your life trampled upon by those claiming to be your superior human being.

A spark of hope in a corrupt and greedy galaxy.

And now your career in the UNSC has led to this moment.

"Status report!" you order as you struggle to your feet after something hit the Exemplar and knocked you from your command chair.

You aren't the only one getting to your feet as most of your bridge crew was similarly impacted by whatever struck the ship.

"We got hit by something!" reports one of the watchstanders, "I have…our systems have no idea what hit us."

"Both torpedo launchers are offline and the shield generator is only operating at 63% power," declares another watchstander, "Hull has taken heavy damage from the unknown weapon.,"

"Engineering reports that one of the engines is offline!" shouts a third watchstander, "We can still move, but just barely."

"What about the rest of the fleet?" you demand as you need to get back into control of the situation.

The Exemplar has been hit hard by something completely unknown, but you are still her captain and your crew needs to know that they can still count on you in this time of crisis. That means remaining calm and getting on top of things.

That makes figuring out what happened to other UNSC warships in your taskforce, which was formed from elements of…

Which UNSC Fleet are you assigned to?
[] 43rd Fleet. The UNSC 43rd Fleet is built around its disportionately heavy warships. In addition to fielding larger than average number of battleships and having a squadron of dreadnoughts, the majority of the cruisers are heavy cruisers whilst almost all of the light escort ships are destroyer-weight. It lacks tactical mobility and hangar space, but 43rd Fleet more than makes up for it in raw ability to dish out damage and take it in turn.
[] 96th Fleet. The UNSC 96th Fleet is a relatively new formation built around carrier warships and their ability to field starfighters. It has a disportionately large number of light carriers amongst its cruiser complement while the majority of its capital ships are either assault carriers, fleet carriers or supercarriers. While it struggles to stand up to most peer opponents in a direct engagement, the 96th Fleet has enough starfighters to ensure the battle won't come to that.
[] 20th Fleet. The UNSC 20th Fleet is one of the oldest formations around. While it has yet to receive any of the most modern warships, the fleet has one of the highest Focused on veteran crews and elite pilots.

The taskforce that was formed to deal with a brewing problem in this part of UN space. Just one of the many symptoms of the United Nations collapsing under its own corrupted and bloated weight. You don't know how to fix things, but you do know your duty and because of that you're spent the last couple of weeks fighting against…

Who are you fighting?
[] Megacorp Mercenaries. As part of the breakdown of general order, you are fighting a mercenary force that has been unreasonably well-equipped by the megacorp that it is working for. You've been fighting forces comparable to your own if inferior in quality.
[] 'Socialist' Rebels. Any major protest or revolt against the oligarchs running the UN is called 'Socialist' these days and you're fairly certain this bunch of rebels are more fascist than socialist. You've been facing masses of converted civilian equipment such as armed freighters and shuttles.
[] Cultist Uprising. UNIC really dropped the ball on this one because some doomsday cult managed to gain enough traction to launch a system wide uprising against the UN. You're been facing diehard fanatics of varying quality and you get the gut feeling that something weird is up.

"Commodore Ripley!" shouts Commander Tahmina Khan as she strides into the bridge, "We have enemy contact heading our way!"

Commander Khan is your XO, the second in command of the UNS Exemplar and your loyal right-hand. Having worked with her for some time now, this is supposed to be your last assignment with Tahmina as the other woman is due to be transferred to her own command after this campaign is over. A real shame because Commander Khan has…

What is Commander Tahmina Khan's talent?
[] A Motivational Spirit. Tahmina both runs a tight ship and has a talent for motivating the crew to do their best. Pass one failed Exemplar Check per encounter.
[] A Mind for Engineering. Having risen from the ranks of engineers, Tahmina is good at making sure the Exemplar stays in good shape. Bonus to all Exemplar repair rolls.
[] Some Good Fortune. While you hate to subscribe to supernatural beliefs, you cannot deny that things have a tendency to go unnaturally well when Tahmina is in. One Reroll per encounter.
[] A Sixth Sense. Tahamina has something of a sixth sense from somewhere. You don't know how it works, but she has always had a knack for just knowing things. Mystery Box.

Commodore Elora Ripley
-Determination: 4/It takes a certain type of individual to be a high-ranking idealist in the UNSC, but you have the guts and stubbornness to be one.
-Intelligence: 4/You are smart and knowledgeable enough to get command of a fleet carrier, a cut above the rest yet nothing truly special.
-Charisma: 6/You are especially charming, able to make friends out of strangers and get people aboard your position.

Enterprise-class Fleet Carrier UNS Exemplar
Weapons: 1/2, Several batteries of light laser cannons and a pair of heavy torpedo launchers. Both torpedo launchers and multiple laser turrets are offline.
Shields: 1/2, Standard warship shield generator. Shield generator is operating at partial capacity.
Hull: 3/5, Basic carrier hull with a standard amount of armour plating. Hull has taken a substantial beating.
Engines: 0.5/1, Standard set of dual engines for a capital ship. One engine is offline and the hyperdrive is on the fritz.
Hangar: 12/1.5 Gunboat Squadrons, 0.5 Bomber Squadron, 2 Interceptor Squadrons, 2 Fighter Squadrons.
Crew: Regular
Special = Squadron Coordination Network: Enhanced ability to command all small craft squadrons.

Second half of what is basically character creation before we get into the swing of things. The fleet vote is about the other warships you expect to find with you right now while the enemy vote is about who you are fighting right now, not who you will be fighting long term. Finally, the XO vote is about what your second-in-command is like and what sort of special ability they provide. I feel that all of the special abilities are clear enough that they don't need further explanation here.

As like last time, please use plan voting for this vote.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.

Alright, here we go.

-[X] 96th Fleet. The UNSC 96th Fleet is a relatively new formation built around carrier warships and their ability to field starfighters. I picked the "Carrier Fleet" because we're running a ship with an explicit bonus to coordinating small craft actions. We'd be horribly out of place in a fleet of super-duper battleships, to be honest.
I picked megacorps mercs because fuck megacorps.
And for a ship commander I like the reroll and the fluff of "runs a good ship with motivated crew".

If we get a choice of CAG they 100% need to get the Sixth Sense mystery box though.

I want to use the special ability of our ship and have the cultist up to something sixth sense combo

Umm, considering the damage done to our carrier in the surprise attack, I suspect having a lot of carriers means a lot of them will have died from the attack, since part of the option says that the carrier fleet cannot stand up to as much damage. In other words, that makes it the the worst type of fleet to be ambushed as we are being right now. Having a fleet with heavy units would likely mean more will survive the initial surprise attack.
